Welcome to viewers on BBC Two, it is three all in the match. Penalty

:00:11.:00:22.

shoot out potentially looming and all the drama and further tension

:00:23.:00:34.

that that will bring with it. In the back of the Dutch line, the last few

:00:35.:00:41.

times they have faced Leurink in a penalty shoot out, they have lost,

:00:42.:00:57.

the last in Belgium -- Maddie Hinch. Richardson-Walsh is back tidying up.

:00:58.:01:04.

She is unstoppable on the right flank. Sent across, Maddie Hinch

:01:05.:01:10.

sticks out her foot and sends a clear. Free hit this side for the

:01:11.:01:16.

ball off the stick of Susannah Townsend. Inside the final 60

:01:17.:01:18.

seconds of the game. One more chance for Great Britain to

:01:19.:01:36.

finish it in normal time. Pressing forward, cautiously, which is

:01:37.:01:42.

understandable. 30 seconds left in the gold medal game, Helen

:01:43.:01:50.

Richardson-Walsh finds Georgie Twigg. Loses possession.

:01:51.:02:03.

Last ten seconds, the gold medal game is going to a penalty shoot

:02:04.:02:14.

out. Three all at the end of normal time, penalties to follow.

:02:15.:02:26.

It is penalties now, Great Britain somehow have clawed themselves back

:02:27.:02:33.

into it. For long periods, until the end of the game, the Dutch

:02:34.:02:40.

dominated. They dominated, had so much possession, turned GB over in

:02:41.:02:44.

areas, but they have been successful, not just over this

:02:45.:02:49.

tournament but in the last couple of years. The ability of Maddie Hinch

:02:50.:02:53.

has been an real and they ride it again and again and come forward and

:02:54.:02:59.

they get a chance and they score a goal. It comes down to this, take us

:03:00.:03:07.

through the penalty shoot out format. It is an eight second timed

:03:08.:03:11.

opportunity. The attacker will start from the goal-line, the goalkeeper

:03:12.:03:16.

will advance. Eight seconds to score. Not a single opportunity, if

:03:17.:03:22.

there is a rebound, you can go again and again until the time runs out.

:03:23.:03:28.

If the goalkeeper files, it can be upgraded to a penalty stroke. An

:03:29.:03:38.

eight second one on one. Somehow Great Britain drive themselves back

:03:39.:03:45.

into it with the equaliser. It was not pretty. In the end, not in by

:03:46.:03:51.

Nichola White, but they had to keep going, they had to believe, it comes

:03:52.:03:58.

from years of training, it is ingrained, born out of the gym, on a

:03:59.:04:04.

dark wet December evening, they build that confidence. It takes you

:04:05.:04:10.

through a game when the opponent is dominant and the opponent is all

:04:11.:04:18.

over you but you hold firm. It was Nicola White who got the equaliser.

:04:19.:04:24.

Maddie Hinch has been the store. What advantage does she give us? Her

:04:25.:04:32.

preparation. She allegedly has a little black broke, there are

:04:33.:04:36.

tactics written on the back of her water bottle. She will have done a

:04:37.:04:41.

massive amount of preparation. She knows what she did in the European

:04:42.:04:46.

Cup final for England. Does it matter that the Dutch have already

:04:47.:04:51.

come through in a penalty shoot out? It makes no difference, these

:04:52.:04:56.

players train, they will have repeated the action, for me it has

:04:57.:05:02.

been decisive. They have a basic understanding. Do not get cautious.

:05:03.:05:10.

Do not change your mind, stick with what you know. It is important to

:05:11.:05:17.

keep a clear mind. Maddie Hinch looking at her book, spot on. Is

:05:18.:05:23.

there any way of telling the skills that these guys have, how much

:05:24.:05:31.

practice have they done. They have practised until it becomes

:05:32.:05:39.

instinctive. There is not time to think, you have to look but the

:05:40.:05:47.

goalkeeper is doing. Read her body position, go into a different space.

:05:48.:05:52.

Where is the ball being carried? None of that can be processed in

:05:53.:05:58.

real-time. It is all about that instinctive knowledge. This is real

:05:59.:06:04.

drama coming up, a penalty shoot out is far away. Everything crossed

:06:05.:06:12.

appear in the commentary box. Helen Richardson-Walsh is first away. She

:06:13.:06:19.

will take on the Dutch goalkeeper, Joyce Sombroek. The eight second

:06:20.:06:25.

time will appear on the giant scoreboard and then the umpire will

:06:26.:06:31.

blow the whistle for the start. First penalty of the shoot out in

:06:32.:06:43.

the gold medal game. Helen Richardson-Walsh on her way, holds

:06:44.:06:55.

it up. Saved and behind. Was not the best from Helen Richardson-Walsh,

:06:56.:06:59.

she does the right thing, turns her back and then she does not get the

:07:00.:07:05.

drive she needs to put the ball out of reach and Joyce Sombroek took the

:07:06.:07:11.

first of the shoot out four the Dutch in the semifinal and he

:07:12.:07:16.

stepped up first game today. She tends to come in and slap the ball

:07:17.:07:29.

off the top. Bos. It is behind, it is a mess. Great goalkeeping from

:07:30.:07:37.

Maddie Hinch, sprinted off her line. She is clever, she changes were she

:07:38.:07:41.

starts, her run-up each time and that time she chose the post. She

:07:42.:07:49.

kept it out and up next is Alex Danson. She will take the second

:07:50.:07:57.

penalty for Great Britain. Alex Danson, charging towards Joyce

:07:58.:08:08.

Sombroek. She is out of time. Three penalties, no luck from any player

:08:09.:08:18.

yet. One of the world's best players cannot hurt to watch. Alex Danson

:08:19.:08:25.

turning her back, Joyce Sombroek is able to do the splits. Ellen Hoog is

:08:26.:08:35.

up next for the Dutch. She scored in sudden death but Mr first one in the

:08:36.:08:41.

last penalty shoot out. Ellen Hoog against Maddie Hinch. Fourth penalty

:08:42.:08:49.

of the shoot out. Ellen Hoog, Maddie Hinch has got hold of it, it is

:08:50.:08:55.

under her body, she will kick it clear. Maddie Hinch, absolutely

:08:56.:09:06.

brilliant. Maddie Hinch on this one, deciding, she comes out slowly this

:09:07.:09:10.

time, stutters as she comes out, really of poets Ellen Hoog, tries to

:09:11.:09:16.

roll it under, it does exceptionally well not to cover the ball and give

:09:17.:09:21.

away another shoot out. Sophie Bray. Sophie Bray is next up, one of the

:09:22.:09:28.

outstanding players for Great Britain in this Olympic tournament.

:09:29.:09:36.

Will she be the first to score? She is brought down, penalty stroke. In

:09:37.:09:42.

this situation, anyone can take the penalty stroke, it does not have to

:09:43.:09:46.

be the person involved in the shoot out which is why Sophie Bray is

:09:47.:09:58.

coming back. Joyce Sombroek has changed her stick for it the penalty

:09:59.:10:04.

stroke. Helen Richardson-Walsh is striding forward to take the penalty

:10:05.:10:22.

stroke. Can she find the target? Helen Richardson-Walsh, penalty

:10:23.:10:27.

stroke. Scores! Great Britain are off the market in the shoot out.

:10:28.:10:33.

Love that phase, the entire Dutch crowd were booing her, she will play

:10:34.:10:38.

her club hockey there next season. That is calmness under pressure,

:10:39.:10:42.

rolling the ball into the corner. Some of the girls cannot watch. Next

:10:43.:10:49.

up for the Netherlands, it is Laurien Leurink. Maddie Hinch is not

:10:50.:10:56.

imposition, no real rush to get there, it will make things more

:10:57.:11:04.

tense for Laurien Leurink. She is 19 years old, Maddie Hinch playing mind

:11:05.:11:07.

games with, she is a quality player with a lot learn. The Dutch have not

:11:08.:11:17.

scored one yet. Can Laurien Leurink get their first? She's going all the

:11:18.:11:20.

way around, Maddie Hinch pushes it away. I think that sums up probably

:11:21.:11:33.

everyone watching! It is brave for a 19-year-old to step up and take a

:11:34.:11:37.

penalty in a shoot out in the Olympic Games but Maddie Hinch

:11:38.:11:41.

showing why she is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world

:11:42.:11:48.

in this situation. Laura Unsworth. She is on her way. Joyce Sombroek

:11:49.:11:55.

size, another chance for Laura Unsworth, high, over the top.

:11:56.:12:05.

-- Joyce Sombroek saves it. Laura Unsworth choosing to emulate Bos and

:12:06.:12:15.

take a shot from the top. Takes a chance and tries to hit it over the

:12:16.:12:22.

keeper. Now we have got 68 for the Dutch team. -- Margot Van Geffen.

:12:23.:12:35.

Margot Van Geffen poised over the ball, inching forward. Maddie Hinch

:12:36.:12:41.

watching it, but she has hit the post, she has missed, Maddie Hinch

:12:42.:12:49.

will clear. Bottom line right now, is if Hollie Webb scores, if Hollie

:12:50.:12:55.

Webb scores, wheat, Great Britain win the gold medal. This is the

:12:56.:13:03.

golden opportunity for Hollie Webb of Great Britain. Joyce Sombroek

:13:04.:13:18.

stands in her way. Hollie Webb on her way to win gold for Great

:13:19.:13:26.

Britain. Hollie Webb, turns, scores! That is the golden goal! Great

:13:27.:13:31.

Britain have won the Olympic gold medal! Their history makers, the

:13:32.:13:40.

hockey history makers, they will each leave Rio with a gold medal.

:13:41.:13:46.

Great Britain are at the Olympic champions and they are on top of the

:13:47.:13:54.

world. Absolutely unbelievable. Look what it means to those players, look

:13:55.:13:59.

what it means back home, anyone who has tuned in watching that on a

:14:00.:14:03.

Friday night, that is something else. I am speechless, I will not

:14:04.:14:09.

get emotional, I cannot believe what I have just seen. It is incredible

:14:10.:14:14.

that Great Britain are walking off here with an Olympic gold medal,

:14:15.:14:19.

eight from eight in the biggest tournament in the world. Eight

:14:20.:14:26.

matches, a Twins, Danny Carey is on the pitch at last. He is down now to

:14:27.:14:32.

celebrate to celebrate with the rest of his staff, Great Britain's 24th

:14:33.:14:40.

gold medal of these games, the first time that the women's British hockey

:14:41.:14:46.

team have struck gold, Maddie Hinch in the gold for Great Britain, once

:14:47.:14:53.

again, the hero of the occasion and the Dutch who won the last two

:14:54.:14:58.

Olympic gold medals will have to settle for the silver tonight.

:14:59.:15:05.

Sounds good, sorry, sounds good. They are the number one team in the

:15:06.:15:10.

world for a reason, they put on a display, no doubt about that in my

:15:11.:15:14.

mind. Anyone watching, the Dutch are a credit to the sport as well.

:15:15.:15:23.

That's all I can say, honestly. It is absolutely incredible, it really

:15:24.:15:30.

is incredible. I... What about Maddie Hinch? We said before the

:15:31.:15:34.

game, it's the third time she has been the hero for England and Great

:15:35.:15:38.

Britain. She's going to love playing in Holland next year, she'll walk

:15:39.:15:43.

into that club with a gold medal around her neck. It'll be a golden

:15:44.:15:49.

goodbye to Kate Richardson-Walsh after so many years of dedicated

:15:50.:15:52.

service to her sport and to her nation. This is how Hollie Webb won

:15:53.:16:00.

the gold for Great Britain. We'll never get bored of seeing that ever.

:16:01.:16:09.

The celebrations can begin. What a night at Deodoro, Great Britain are

:16:10.:16:10.

the Olympic champions. Rishi STUDIO: What a great moment for

:16:11.:16:26.

Britain's hockey team. Simon? I genuinely struggled to put that into

:16:27.:16:31.

words, after a game of that nature where Great Britain were under the

:16:32.:16:33.

cosh for huge chunks of it, they came back in again and again, there

:16:34.:16:37.

were a number of people who felt that if they got to penalties they

:16:38.:16:41.

would win. They have history from the European cup, they have the best

:16:42.:16:44.

goalkeeper in the world, who is unreal, fair play to Maddie Hinch,

:16:45.:16:49.

saved everything put at her. Just incredible. It'll change the face of

:16:50.:16:53.

British oche come impact team sport. It's unbelievable. The Dutch team

:16:54.:16:57.

have done remarkably well, they have a lot to be proud of. Together the

:16:58.:17:02.

two teams have produced almost the dream final. It was a spectacle that

:17:03.:17:08.

I not commentated on or been involved with ever. That was the

:17:09.:17:12.

finest display, maybe not tactically, it was a little bit up

:17:13.:17:16.

and down at times, but as a game, as a spectator in the stadium, for

:17:17.:17:20.

those watching back home, it was unreal. Lovely sportsmanship between

:17:21.:17:24.

the sides as well. What does it say about the sport of hockey? What does

:17:25.:17:28.

tonight say about the sport of hockey to you? It shows anybody, if

:17:29.:17:32.

they believe enough, any team if they believe enough can get to this

:17:33.:17:37.

stage. Some of these athletes are first-time Olympians, some of them

:17:38.:17:40.

three or four time Olympians, but you just have to keep going. If you

:17:41.:17:46.

have a dream you can fulfil it. Yes, they've had hard knocks, training,

:17:47.:17:50.

physical elements, what these girls, most teams, have displayed, has been

:17:51.:17:54.

exceptional. To see the sportsmanship they are showing, they

:17:55.:17:57.

have good friends out there, they've battled till the last whistle. You

:17:58.:18:04.

can here celebrations in the Deodoro Stadium, the women dancing, the team

:18:05.:18:07.

dancing, they are having a great time because I imagine the release,

:18:08.:18:12.

after this two week intense period, where they have banned social media,

:18:13.:18:18.

taken themselves away, gone into lockdown to get ready for this

:18:19.:18:25.

moment, now they can celebrate. This involves 31 athletes and support

:18:26.:18:29.

staff, they've gone into lockdown. Mel has joined us from commentary,

:18:30.:18:32.

what a result. They've put themselves beyond doubt as the class

:18:33.:18:38.

outfit in British team sport. What an exceptional result for them. In

:18:39.:18:42.

all truth they haven't been the best side tonight, the Dutch have looked

:18:43.:18:46.

much better, but what they have done tonight and through the tournament

:18:47.:18:49.

is shown belief, belief in each other, and shown there is such a

:18:50.:18:54.

bond that they will not be broken. Absolutely, chose possession doesn't

:18:55.:18:56.

mean anything in sport, the moment it went to the penalty shoot out,

:18:57.:19:00.

it's in Dutch minds. Maddie Hinch three out of three against the Dutch

:19:01.:19:05.

is phenomenal. They talked a lot about belief after the champions

:19:06.:19:08.

Trophy, I sat there and commentated, watched it, I thought how are you

:19:09.:19:12.

going to turn it around in 60 days? They have, eight from eight,

:19:13.:19:18.

incredible. I hate to pick out individual is because every single

:19:19.:19:21.

one, not just the people here, those that missed out on final selection

:19:22.:19:25.

as well, they've all played a part, all played significant parts. Danny

:19:26.:19:33.

Carey and Kate Richardson-Walsh, sing their praises. I've been

:19:34.:19:36.

fortunate enough to have played with Kate and been coached by Danny

:19:37.:19:41.

Carey, is probably the best tactical coach I've ever worked with, he and

:19:42.:19:45.

his team go through hours and hours of footage to get the players in

:19:46.:19:49.

this position. Kate Richardson-Walsh is probably one of the most

:19:50.:19:51.

colourful hockey players you will ever come across, she has no idea

:19:52.:19:55.

the impact she's had on the sport at all. Just have a look at those

:19:56.:19:59.

scenes, you know what it's like to be part of that team. I don't know

:20:00.:20:04.

what it's like to feel like that! Honestly I don't. I have a lot of

:20:05.:20:08.

friends in there. I'm proud and privileged to say they are my

:20:09.:20:12.

friends. I've got a clubmate in there who's going to come back...

:20:13.:20:15.

Has a lot of other clubs have... There's a lot of celebrations going

:20:16.:20:21.

on back home. Watching some of their faces, it looks like this is exactly

:20:22.:20:26.

what they expected. Well, it might be what they plan for, it might be

:20:27.:20:30.

what they expected, but they have genuinely no idea what they've done,

:20:31.:20:35.

this is the moment they will savour for absolutely ever. The emotion the

:20:36.:20:41.

Passion, is outstanding. Mel's off to grab a quick interview for us

:20:42.:20:45.

while we look at it. The crowd applauding them and applauding the

:20:46.:20:49.

Dutch team, just behind us here. I'll reiterate, they were

:20:50.:20:53.

outstanding. They have contributed their part to a fantastic match. I'm

:20:54.:20:58.

certain this will have inspired an audience and players around the

:20:59.:21:00.

world who haven't played in the past. The skills on display,

:21:01.:21:05.

offensively, from the Dutch, were magnificent. From the British

:21:06.:21:07.

perspective, it might have been a little bit last-ditch as we try to

:21:08.:21:12.

get an interview... They had to hang on at times.

:21:13.:21:16.

That's what they did, they played to strength, it's what they did against

:21:17.:21:21.

Australia, they came back, Maddie was brilliant. The chances came. It

:21:22.:21:27.

may not have been pretty but it was effective. Celebrations continuing,

:21:28.:21:30.

so difficult to grab their attention, we'd love to grab a word

:21:31.:21:34.

with Maddie if at all possible art at the moment she wants to be part

:21:35.:21:37.

of what's going on. Still wandering around here, saluting every single

:21:38.:21:46.

member of the crowd. Who is part of the Great Britain support. To let

:21:47.:21:51.

you know, we'll have more reaction from here on BBC Two. We can allow

:21:52.:21:55.

them to celebrate because they deserve it.

:21:56.:21:59.

Just tonight we came here, we expected... They lifted our

:22:00.:22:09.

expectations, Simon. It's still almost hard to believe it came off.

:22:10.:22:15.

It is hard to believe emotionally. If we take it in the cold light of

:22:16.:22:20.

day, this has been years in the making. The girls did expect it. The

:22:21.:22:25.

girls knew they could deliver this. Whether the fans knew it, whether

:22:26.:22:28.

they believed it, whether it was a bit of a pipe dream, every one of

:22:29.:22:32.

those 31 players and support staff believe this moment would come,

:22:33.:22:36.

that's why they delivered in the face of all adversity, it was

:22:37.:22:42.

exceptional. Clare, history made, lots of celebrating going on at

:22:43.:22:46.

Deodoro. STUDIO: I think it's one of the greatest result ever for a

:22:47.:22:51.

women's team sport. We'll have ceremonies and interviews on BBC

:22:52.:22:54.

Two. Hollie Webb with the winning penalty but Maddie Hinch a heroine

:22:55.:22:58.

in goal. We're leaving you shortly on BBC One, coverage already on BBC

:22:59.:23:03.

Two, and it continues. Composure, confidence, character as won a gold

:23:04.:23:07.

medal for the very first time in women's hockey, for Great Britain.

:23:08.:23:11.

We're ready here for 60 minutes of blood, sweat and ultimately tears.

:23:12.:23:15.

One way or the other. Helen Richardson-Walsh waiting in

:23:16.:23:24.

the centre of the circle. Off the legs and this time scored. Great

:23:25.:23:28.

Britain are in front, Lily Owsley strikes.

:23:29.:23:31.

The Dutch inside the circle. Maddie Hinch is out. The angle to goal.

:23:32.:23:42.

Kitty van Male! It's a goal for the Netherlands, 2-1 in front. A chance

:23:43.:23:47.

for Crista Cullen, she's scored. Kitty van Male gets the goal,

:23:48.:23:48.

second. Great Britain are level penalty shoot out. That's the golden

:23:49.:24:03.

goal. Great Britain have won the Olympic gold-medal!

:24:04.:24:09.

Welcome back to the Deodoro Stadium here... Welcome back to Deodoro,

:24:10.:24:19.

where the Great Britain women's hockey team are celebrating their

:24:20.:24:23.

first ever gold medal. Mel Clewlow and Simon Mason alongside me. They

:24:24.:24:28.

are in the huddle now, any idea what Danny Carey the coach might be

:24:29.:24:31.

saying? I can guarantee you one thing, you'll be crying, is such an

:24:32.:24:35.

emotional man, you see him with a poker face during matches, but he is

:24:36.:24:41.

an immensely proud man as well. I've watched him walk around here, I

:24:42.:24:45.

think he's in total disbelief that his team has just won the Olympic

:24:46.:24:49.

gold medal. Simon, we've spoken a few minutes ago on BBC One about the

:24:50.:24:54.

belief and expectation, how much of that has come from Danny Care all of

:24:55.:25:04.

it, he set the bar, I'm sure we'll talk to the players in a moment.

:25:05.:25:08.

Between them it's a collective, once that management team starts to

:25:09.:25:11.

dictate it and they buy into it wholly and totally. Here they come,

:25:12.:25:14.

slowly coming through, hopefully we'll get every single one of them.

:25:15.:25:18.

The problem is as they come through there might be a few embraces. Let

:25:19.:25:24.

them talk to us. Of course I will! There is a whole lot of love that

:25:25.:25:28.

has to be shared. Looks like they'll be coming after the medal ceremony.

:25:29.:25:31.

They were coming but they've been taken away again. They've gone back

:25:32.:25:34.

to where the majority of the British fans are, they are celebrating right

:25:35.:25:38.

in front of them at the moment. It's been the most wonderful night. To

:25:39.:25:41.

recapture the Great Britain took the lead but the Dutch engaged another

:25:42.:25:47.

gear which Great Britain haven't faced in this tournament before. In

:25:48.:25:50.

fairness, they struggled to cope. They haven't faced it as a Great

:25:51.:25:54.

Britain team but they faced it as an England team. The difference for me

:25:55.:25:57.

was the Dutch had all the possession, all the chances,

:25:58.:26:00.

couldn't score corners. Great Britain have four chances and scored

:26:01.:26:04.

three. A game plan executed to perfection almost. The one good

:26:05.:26:09.

thing Great Britain had in their corner was the best goalkeeper in

:26:10.:26:12.

the tournament, Maddie Hinch. It was one of the many good things. They

:26:13.:26:17.

were all exceptional. I believe Maddie Hinch is the best goalkeeper

:26:18.:26:21.

in the world, the best prepared, most agile, made some key says at

:26:22.:26:25.

the beginning. The strokes except them on the way. She saved a penalty

:26:26.:26:32.

from one of the best strikers in the world permits at the bar for Great

:26:33.:26:36.

Britain and took it on. You are the experts, you play at the highest

:26:37.:26:39.

level, you stumbled what it's like to play in pressure like this. When

:26:40.:26:43.

we got to the penalties, given how well Maddie had played in this

:26:44.:26:47.

tournament, how confident were you we would come out on top? Very,

:26:48.:26:51.

honestly very. The amount of homework she does is incredible. The

:26:52.:26:56.

Dutch changed two of their penalty takers from the semifinal and it

:26:57.:26:59.

didn't hinder her. She does something different every time. You

:27:00.:27:04.

never know what you are facing, she changes her position on the Star

:27:05.:27:07.

line, how quickly she comes out, how far she comes out, it's mental, it's

:27:08.:27:13.

a mind game, she thrives on it. It's a lesson for any goalkeepers

:27:14.:27:17.

watching tonight, to see the variety. Don't be predictable, the

:27:18.:27:21.

mobile, agile, do your homework and step into it with immense confidence

:27:22.:27:26.

in what you can do. The last Dutch penalty. Once again, this is where

:27:27.:27:32.

it hit the post. Maddie Hinch is the one making all the effort to push

:27:33.:27:35.

them in the wrong position. The winning penalty, the winning moment,

:27:36.:27:41.

I felt I needed to turn away. You were watching every second. I'm not

:27:42.:27:47.

sure I was at that moment. What pressure, what composure. How she

:27:48.:27:54.

played that I have no idea. To deliver that is mental strength

:27:55.:27:59.

beyond belief. That is key, isn't it, that has been the key. They've

:28:00.:28:03.

emphasise mental strength from the moment they arrived here in Rio to

:28:04.:28:08.

the end of tonight. For me the moment was Helen Richardson-Walsh

:28:09.:28:11.

stepping up to take a stroke from Sophie Bray, the entire crowd

:28:12.:28:14.

barring the Brits were booing her senseless and she put it in the

:28:15.:28:18.

bottom corner. You think, those are the moments that define medal

:28:19.:28:21.

matches. Hollie Webb had the composure and peace of mind to put

:28:22.:28:27.

the winning, but that, for me, everybody had missed until that

:28:28.:28:30.

point, she rolled it in, you could tell by her face, looking at that

:28:31.:28:35.

crowd, saying, come on then! I want to talk about the family that has

:28:36.:28:39.

been created under Danny Carey and Kate Richardson-Walsh, they are so

:28:40.:28:43.

tight knit. We talk about how significant the result is for the

:28:44.:28:47.

sport, but for women sporting Great Britain, as a team, I don't think

:28:48.:28:50.

I've seen a team as tight-knit as this. No, it's massive. They talk

:28:51.:28:55.

about the squad of 31, those players that aren't here have an immense

:28:56.:28:59.

pride in it as well because they've put this group of players to be the

:29:00.:29:04.

best they can be. It'll be tough when they go into the centralised

:29:05.:29:07.

programme, there will be players who have won Olympic gold, some won

:29:08.:29:11.

bronze, some bad girl, I want a piece of the action. All it does is

:29:12.:29:15.

raise the bar for British sport and both women's and men's hockey.

:29:16.:29:20.

Tonight, Simon, people at home watching. They will have sampled a

:29:21.:29:25.

little bit tonight. They will have sampled the whole gamut of what this

:29:26.:29:30.

sport can offer. Yeah, and this is about the number of people who go

:29:31.:29:33.

home who haven't picked up a hockey stick before, haven't played for a

:29:34.:29:36.

long time, the social media impact the girls have seen none of, they

:29:37.:29:39.

have no idea what they are going back into. It's been amazing, we

:29:40.:29:43.

followed it, friends getting in touch because of how well the girls

:29:44.:29:46.

have done. There are people who haven't touched a stick in 20 years

:29:47.:29:49.

going back to their clubs at the beginning of this season and

:29:50.:29:52.

hundreds of players, if not thousands, who will be inspired by

:29:53.:29:54.

what the British girls have delivered.

:29:55.:30:01.

match for amazing how they have that same attitude. They embrace the

:30:02.:30:26.

youngsters coming end. Helen said she would play for Great Britain for

:30:27.:30:31.

as long as she can and that is what I like. It is not a complacency, and

:30:32.:30:39.

Lily Owsley has come here and she must think, piece of cake.

:30:40.:30:43.

Everything she has touched has turned to gold. She scored the

:30:44.:30:48.

equaliser in the European Championships for England. Hopefully

:30:49.:30:52.

people at home have been watching and they have been inspired and if

:30:53.:30:56.

you have, this is how you can via the BBC sport website. Get Inspired

:30:57.:31:04.

will help you get active. It is on the BBC Sport website and you can

:31:05.:31:07.

find inspirational stories from people just like you as well as

:31:08.:31:12.

hints and tips and over 70 practical guides to get you to give something

:31:13.:31:17.

a go. There is an activity finder to help you find something to try and

:31:18.:31:21.

you can tell us how you are getting on and on Twitter and Facebook and

:31:22.:31:26.

maybe you can inspire someone else to give something a try. Now we are

:31:27.:31:37.

passing the bat on over to you. Get up, Get Inspired and get active. We

:31:38.:31:40.

will look at how this whole match unfolded, it has been incredible. It

:31:41.:31:45.

had everything. There was so much pressure that we had to soak up. The

:31:46.:31:52.

Dutch provided a whole new test for what Great Britain had faced, but

:31:53.:31:57.

for Spain were good, but the Dutch work quick and pacey and skilful,

:31:58.:32:03.

coming into the match, you said that you thought, if we scored the first

:32:04.:32:07.

goal, then we would win the match, did you say when the match in a

:32:08.:32:14.

penalty shoot out? Initially I said if we score first, we will win and

:32:15.:32:20.

then I was asked again and I said it would go to a shoot out. Yeah, if I

:32:21.:32:25.

was betting, I would probably be quite well up now. When you see the

:32:26.:32:33.

game unfold and you see the Dutch dominating possession and territory,

:32:34.:32:38.

you try and be positive in the commentary, but you get so absorbed.

:32:39.:32:46.

This was tense for a Friday night. A little bit of an understatement.

:32:47.:32:50.

This is the first goal scored by Great Britain. Fantastic build-up

:32:51.:33:00.

play by Sophie Bray. Initial save by Joyce Sombroek and Britain were

:33:01.:33:04.

first to the rebound and it trickles over the line. One way to get into

:33:05.:33:09.

the minds of the Dutch. We were dazzled by the skills from Sophie

:33:10.:33:14.

Bray but inevitably the Dutch struck back. They turned the ball over in

:33:15.:33:20.

midfield quite a lot. When they got those counterattack chances, they

:33:21.:33:25.

took them, they looked dangerous and there was a fantastic backhand, what

:33:26.:33:30.

a finish on the run. So many have been messed on Matt backhand. Not

:33:31.:33:39.

the traditional corner from Maartje Paumen. Amazingly, almost against

:33:40.:33:46.

the run of play, we equalised. The girls kept pushing and they had two

:33:47.:33:51.

and all of a sudden, they got to the point where they knew they could

:33:52.:33:55.

achieve something. The Dutch went up 3-2 and we were wondering if we

:33:56.:34:00.

would get an equaliser and we did. I was chuffed to see them pressing

:34:01.:34:05.

forward and you could see the relief on their faces. Another tab then

:34:06.:34:11.

that by Nicola White. How would you sum up what style of play we have

:34:12.:34:17.

produced tonight? The Dutch obviously were incisive and sharp

:34:18.:34:22.

and attacking, how would you say that we played? Controlled, we had

:34:23.:34:27.

believe, we had to sit back and defend, but it was structured, we

:34:28.:34:31.

tried not to get fractured, but we stay together as the team that

:34:32.:34:37.

delivered the unity. The other thing was the conditioning, another huge

:34:38.:34:42.

part in what has happened tonight, because Simon and I were looking and

:34:43.:34:46.

we could see how hard they were having to work to match the Dutch,

:34:47.:34:53.

so many players been stretched, but they dug it out. For me, them and

:34:54.:34:59.

the USA by the teams in the best physical condition and it is credit

:35:00.:35:03.

to the strength and conditioning coaches. One of the coaches is

:35:04.:35:07.

moving on to a different sport as of Monday, what a way for him to sign

:35:08.:35:12.

of his involvement with British hockey. Players want to get

:35:13.:35:17.

involved, but coaches will want to be a part of British hockey. I hope

:35:18.:35:21.

they have stolen his notebooks, they do not want to lose those skills. It

:35:22.:35:26.

came to fruition tonight, all the hard work and practice. The

:35:27.:35:33.

different number of skills that they did in training, different types of

:35:34.:35:39.

nutritional conversations, all sorts of particulars that make up that

:35:40.:35:43.

final athlete. It is so complex, you cannot turn up at an event in the

:35:44.:35:50.

Olympics, you do not turn up if you have not done unbelievable work,

:35:51.:35:53.

from the first thing you do in the morning to the last thing you do

:35:54.:35:58.

when you turn the lights off. Every day, each day, it does not matter

:35:59.:36:03.

what is in front of you, it is a routine, you cannot waste a day and

:36:04.:36:08.

they will start about when they get back home. That central programme

:36:09.:36:14.

has to deliver this all over again. What about the sacrifices they have

:36:15.:36:19.

had to make, not just on the pitch, we talked about how hard they had to

:36:20.:36:23.

work, a few of them have had to make sacrifices off the pitch. That is

:36:24.:36:29.

all part of being a centralised programme and they all appreciate

:36:30.:36:33.

and understand that if they do not deliver, there is a funding

:36:34.:36:37.

implication and it proves, we have been fortunate as a sport that we

:36:38.:36:41.

have been funded over a massive number of years and it has come to

:36:42.:36:47.

fruition in 2012 and 2016. Right now they will not see the sacrifices at

:36:48.:36:52.

all. It is unbelievable. I touched on the family aspect of it, I was

:36:53.:36:59.

reading an article today saying how team sport is so important for the

:37:00.:37:02.

development of youngsters and hopefully people tonight will have

:37:03.:37:06.

been watching and realise, I would love to be part of a team like this

:37:07.:37:11.

one. I am biased, I prefer team sport and have done since I was ten

:37:12.:37:16.

years old. There is a different dynamic. For me, team sport delivers

:37:17.:37:23.

so many different elements. The friendships that you build can stand

:37:24.:37:28.

for life in terms of trying to create some ideals to set you on

:37:29.:37:34.

your pathway, but is an incredible opportunity for people to get

:37:35.:37:40.

involved. Absolutely. We are shortly going to have the medal ceremony and

:37:41.:37:46.

I would imagine there might be the odd tear or two. Mel will head up to

:37:47.:37:56.

the commentary box. Thank you. Karen Brown is delivered tonight, 16

:37:57.:38:05.

members of each of their winning squad -- 48 medals. Gold and bronze

:38:06.:38:13.

medals were both won today. Here come the medal winners. The medal

:38:14.:38:21.

ceremony will take place on the pitch, the Dutch looking

:38:22.:38:24.

unsurprisingly a little solemn, champions in 2008 and again in 2012,

:38:25.:38:32.

silver medal in 2016 and it all came down to the harsh reality of a

:38:33.:38:40.

penalty shoot out. The Germans played their bronze medal match

:38:41.:38:44.

earlier today in the heat of the midday sun, defeating New Zealand by

:38:45.:38:52.

two goals to one. They have had an afternoon to celebrate and they have

:38:53.:38:56.

been here to watch the final unfold and all the drama that came with it.

:38:57.:39:03.

What a match. The Dutch so dominant but when it mattered most, Maddie

:39:04.:39:08.

Hinch was pretty much unstoppable, it started with hurt saving the

:39:09.:39:15.

penalty stroke from Maartje Paumen in the first quarter. Goalkeeping

:39:16.:39:20.

ability shone thereafter right up to the when it mattered most in the

:39:21.:39:29.

penalty shoot out. All the teams assembled for the presentations.

:39:30.:40:34.

We have three different medal presentations for the teams, one for

:40:35.:40:43.

the bronze medal team, one for the silver medal team and one for the

:40:44.:40:47.

gold medal winning team. We all know who that is now. Now the whole thing

:40:48.:40:58.

is repeated in English, this does take a while! Helen Richardson-Walsh

:40:59.:41:08.

in conversation with Susannah Townsend. That is the German

:41:09.:41:15.

captain, there is the Dutch captain. The Germans beating New Zealand for

:41:16.:41:24.

the bronze medal earlier today. Alex Danson on the left. And lead to her

:41:25.:41:38.

left. -- looking down Susannah Townsend is already in tears.

:41:39.:41:46.

Georgie Twigg took a whack on the lip, but returned to the heat of

:41:47.:41:52.

battle, clutching an ice pack over her mouth. Crista Cullen had to get

:41:53.:42:01.

stitched up in the semifinal. Eight stitches in her forehead. Now the

:42:02.:42:04.

whole thing is done in Brazil in, we have had it in French, which is the

:42:05.:42:12.

language of the Olympic movement was founded by a Frenchman when it

:42:13.:42:20.

started. France -- French remains the language of the Olympics,

:42:21.:42:25.

despite the fact it is not widely spoken here in Brazil. Portuguese is

:42:26.:42:29.

the mother tongue. All these dignitaries are introduced in

:42:30.:42:34.

Portuguese, then in English, then finally in French. I think we are

:42:35.:42:41.

through that stage now. Germany, the bronze medallists. Beaten by the

:42:42.:42:50.

Dutch in a penalty shoot out in the semifinal, returned to the field

:42:51.:42:53.

with renewed enthusiasm today. Defeated New Zealand. That was in

:42:54.:42:58.

the bronze medal play-off, 2-1. Maddie Hinch gets a bronze medal.

:42:59.:43:30.

Maddie Hinch. Hannah MacLeod next in line.

:43:31.:43:40.

She has had a pretty good tournament. You're watching the

:43:41.:43:57.

medal ceremony to celebrate Great Britain's gold medal in their hockey

:43:58.:44:04.

tournament. It was three all at full time and we went to all the tension

:44:05.:44:10.

of the penalty shoot out and there were endless misses and goalkeeping

:44:11.:44:21.

brilliance the Dutch penalty takers were shaken even before they set off

:44:22.:44:34.

for the girl. It came down to the winning strike from Hollie Webb of

:44:35.:44:40.

Great Britain. That was to seal the gold medal. On a momentous evening

:44:41.:44:46.

for hockey for British sport. The 24th gold medal for Great Britain so

:44:47.:44:51.

far. There will be many people watching tonight at their hockey

:44:52.:44:58.

clubs, so many to name, Canterbury will be watching on the big screen.

:44:59.:45:04.

I had an e-mail from my local hockey team, they had two players in the

:45:05.:45:09.

British court and the last time Great Britain won a gold, was 1988.

:45:10.:45:15.

As you say, it's all about the entire hockey family. Clubs are one

:45:16.:45:22.

of the reasons there are 16 players out there getting gold medals. They

:45:23.:45:25.

support the players from junior age groups right the way through to

:45:26.:45:30.

senior level. They support them, some of them with funding, some with

:45:31.:45:35.

expenses. The thing for me is pretty much every single player out there,

:45:36.:45:38.

every single player out there, knows what that means to them and gives

:45:39.:45:42.

back to their club as well. I'm sure that will continue when they take

:45:43.:45:45.

those gold medals into their clubs for the first time. The clubs will

:45:46.:45:51.

get a look at an Olympic gold medal which will in turn encourage further

:45:52.:45:55.

influx of youngsters to take up the game. Widely played in schools

:45:56.:46:03.

around the country. And the clubs will benefit from Great Britain's

:46:04.:46:08.

success this evening. Funding trickles down from the lottery and

:46:09.:46:13.

the associated sponsorship that comes with it. Funding is now

:46:14.:46:18.

assured for British hockey. Through the next four year Olympic cycle,

:46:19.:46:27.

until they meet again in Tokyo 2020. Japan's women were in the Olympic

:46:28.:46:31.

hockey tournament this year, put up a good fight against Great Britain

:46:32.:46:38.

in the pool match. Great Britain beating Japan eventually buy 2-0. A

:46:39.:46:42.

lot of other teams put more goals past the Japan team. Great Britain

:46:43.:46:47.

possibly at their least convincing during that pool game against Japan.

:46:48.:46:53.

Yeah, I think they did. At that moment in time they realised they

:46:54.:46:56.

had already qualified for the quarterfinals with the win against

:46:57.:47:00.

Argentina. It was something that was probably going to happen, it's not,

:47:01.:47:04.

at times, great viewing, it chose the expectations we as commentators,

:47:05.:47:10.

and as people back home, the expectation on these players. They

:47:11.:47:11.

pushed on from that moment on. Time for the Dutch to force a smile

:47:12.:47:22.

and celebrate their silver. For many of them to add to the gold they won

:47:23.:47:24.

in London four years ago. Tonight they were the dominant team

:47:25.:47:36.

against Great Britain throughout the second and third quarters. When

:47:37.:47:41.

Great Britain had a chance to score they made it count. Great

:47:42.:47:50.

goalkeeping. Joyce Sombroek made a lot of key saves. The 25-year-old

:47:51.:47:52.

Dutch goalkeeper. It's one of these peculiar

:47:53.:48:05.

situations where the bronze medallists are happier than the

:48:06.:48:09.

silver medallist. They are at this precise moment in time because they

:48:10.:48:13.

won their last game in an Olympics but I'm sure for the Dutch team when

:48:14.:48:16.

they get back to Holland and get time to reflect on the competition,

:48:17.:48:21.

they changed their coach after their loss to England in the European cup,

:48:22.:48:24.

so Alyson Annan hasn't had this group of players long. There are a

:48:25.:48:28.

few of them who will retire from the Dutch team so there will be some

:48:29.:48:31.

fresh faces coming into this side. But they are still by world ranking

:48:32.:48:37.

state is the best team in the world. They are that for a reason. They've

:48:38.:48:40.

always set the bar for other nations. When you beat them it

:48:41.:48:44.

really does feel you've been up against it. You feel probably more

:48:45.:48:50.

delighted and excited than beating any other nation. They'll be

:48:51.:48:54.

disappointed with silver, of course they will, but it motivates them to

:48:55.:48:56.

win gold next time. Van Maasakker, one of their key

:48:57.:49:08.

players. Alongside her, the captain, the 30-year-old marcher Plowman. --

:49:09.:49:21.

Maartje Paumen. She messed a penalty stroke in the first quarter. Saved

:49:22.:49:28.

by Maddie Hinch. Naomi van As is retiring after tonight. She had a

:49:29.:49:34.

really brilliant game. She was absolutely everywhere, every minute

:49:35.:49:40.

of the 60. She certainly saved her best till last. Cause Great Britain

:49:41.:49:45.

a number of problems. It'll be a shame to see her go, she's been a

:49:46.:49:49.

fantastic advert for the sport over the years, world Player of the Year

:49:50.:49:52.

the number of times. I've no doubt there is a bright future for her

:49:53.:50:00.

away from the hockey field. Emotion is beginning to settle now for the

:50:01.:50:07.

defeated Dutch. Doing their best to enjoy the moment. Several of them,

:50:08.:50:15.

it will be their last Olympic Games. And the mementos are now being

:50:16.:50:21.

handed out. The Dutch fans, to their credit, have stayed around in huge

:50:22.:50:24.

numbers to watch this medal ceremony. Chanting the name of their

:50:25.:50:34.

nation. Keenly across the field. It's one of the biggest sports in

:50:35.:50:37.

Holland. It's always great to go over there and play, if you are

:50:38.:50:43.

fortunate enough to go over there. Always a number of children that

:50:44.:50:46.

come onto the field at half-time or at the end of matches, all they want

:50:47.:50:50.

to do is emulate these girls on the podium right now. They have such a

:50:51.:50:56.

strong club system, such a strong junior section in Holland as well,

:50:57.:51:01.

the sustainability, again, of the clubs enabling Holland to stay the

:51:02.:51:04.

number one ranked ladies team in the world.

:51:05.:51:20.

Almost time. For the moment the British team have been waiting for

:51:21.:51:28.

and dreaming of. Bronze medal formalities have been

:51:29.:51:46.

done, the silver medal is sorted. Now it's time for the gold medals to

:51:47.:51:48.

be awarded. ANNOUNCER: your medallists and

Olympic champions... Great Britain! Great Britain are the Olympic hockey

champions, on the top step of the podium. Gold medals coming their way

:52:18.:52:26.

after a magnificent tournament. Eight matches, seven victories and a

:52:27.:52:30.

draw, then the win in the penalty shoot out, in the gold-medal game,

:52:31.:52:34.

over the Dutch. What character they've shown throughout.

:52:35.:52:40.

Maddie Hinch, the hero from the shoot out, plays club hockey at

:52:41.:52:47.

Holcombe, she's been there a few years, she will spend a year

:52:48.:52:55.

Holland. Unsworth, rock-solid in defence throughout the tournament.

:52:56.:52:59.

She's one of two players from East Grinstead, they'll be celebrating in

:53:00.:53:02.

East Sussex tonight. Crista Cullen, wounded in the semis, scored a

:53:03.:53:04.

brilliant golden night. Heather McLeod. The unsung hero from

:53:05.:53:14.

St Albans. Second medal for her. Having being part of the gold-medal

:53:15.:53:22.

team in 2012. -- silver medal. Georgie Twigg has a wound on her

:53:23.:53:28.

chin, you can see. Helen Richardson-Walsh was doubtful after

:53:29.:53:32.

her hamstring injury. Possibly wasn't at her best. She's another

:53:33.:53:36.

one, she's been playing hockey at Reading but she'll be going overseas

:53:37.:53:41.

to Holland next year. Susannah Townsend, called the best player in

:53:42.:53:45.

the world by one or two people around here who know their stuff.

:53:46.:53:52.

Now the captain. Kate Richardson-Walsh has led them to the

:53:53.:54:00.

gold medal. What a way to go out. Her sister actually flew out just

:54:01.:54:04.

for the final, made sure she managed to get in this morning, got herself

:54:05.:54:07.

a ticket, has come to witness her sister not only retire but leave as

:54:08.:54:11.

an Olympic champion. Sam Quek takes her goal. Alex Danson waiting for

:54:12.:54:21.

the moment, wants to save it. -- savour it.

:54:22.:54:30.

Giselle Ansley, what a tournament she's had. One of those unsung

:54:31.:54:40.

heroes. Sophie Bray with those incredible silky skills upfront.

:54:41.:54:47.

Absolutely brilliant. Sometimes it looks like that ball is glued to the

:54:48.:54:48.

end of her hockey stick. Hollie Webb scored the key penalty

:54:49.:55:00.

goal to night in the shoot out. To win the gold for Great Britain.

:55:01.:55:09.

McCallin has played in every one of their matches, had a great game

tonight, too. Lily Owsley, the youngest player in the side.
