One man has died and another is in hospital after a crash on one of

Swindon's busiest roads. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of

causing death by dangerous driving. Steve Knibbs reports.

6:30 this morning, at a timd when the road would have been quhet,

tragedy struck at the entrance to the Orbital Retail Park. It's

thought both cars were travdlling in opposite directions along Thamesdown

Drive when the collision happened. The cars ended up 100 yards away

from each other after they hit. The passenger of the red Nissan, who

tonight was named as Paul Whnters from Swindon, died in hospital. The

driver was seriously injured but is currently stable in Southme`d

hospital. Two men, from Swindon who were both in the blue Astra have

been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Access to the shopping centre has been affected but poorly save that

is unavoidable as they have to complete their investigation. Police

have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The roads are quite quiet at that time of day but there were people

here. When police officers `rrived members of the public were `t the

scene and we would like to `ppeal for witnesses and they can contact

myself at police headquarters on the 101.

The two men arrested are sthll being questioned tonight. Family liaison

teams have been appointed to work with relatives of the man khlled

this morning and those injured. The family of a West Countrx sailor

have paid tribute to him as a wonderful family man, who "will be

missed by everyone that knew him". Paul Goslin and Steve Warren, who

were both from Somerset, ard among four sailors missing after their

yacht capsized in the Atlantic. In a statement, Paul Goslin's falily say

they're "struggling to come to terms with the fact Paul won't be found

alive". Prayers have been s`id for the men in churches in Somerset

today. A 13`year`old girl from Somdrset,

who's been missing since Wednesday, has been found safe and well. Police

say Phoebe Lock was found in Swindon last night. She's been reunhted with

her family. A man has been `rrested on suspicion of child abduction

The results are due to be announced for the European Elections hn the

next few hours. Turnout in Thursday's ballot in the Sotth West

was slightly down. Voters in most other EU countries have been to the

polls today, with the results being announced after ten o'clock tonight.

Our Political Editor Paul B`rltrop has been to see votes being counted

in Bristol. Here at the City Academy Brhstol the

count started at 4:30pm. Thhs is one of 138 councils across the south

west adding up votes. `` 38. They will be totalled together, we are

part of one giant constituency stretching down from Swindon to the

Isles of Scilly. The results won't be known until this evening as we

have to wait for the rest of Europe to finish voting. What we do know

about is turnout. 37%, that's slightly down on the last two

European elections. As for the candidates, they are now making

their way down to Poole in Dorset. Last time voters selected three

Conservatives, two from UKIP and one Liberal Democrat. That is Graham

Watson. He has been a member of the European Parliament for 20 xears. He

knows he's in danger of loshng his seat. Also vulnerable are the

Conservatives. Hoping to make some gains are Labour and of course the

party so much has been talkdd about, UKIP. We hope to bring you the

result on our late bulletin this evening.

Prince Charles has attended a concert in Gloucestershire, his

first public engagement since he was linked to controversial comlents

about Russia. The classical music event took place at the Church of St

Peter and St Paul in Northldach last night. The prince is the patron of

the charity Music in Countrx Churches which helps churchds raise

money for their maintenance. It is a really helpful way of

getting the church better known and raising funds and listening to great

music. The charity has been running for 25 years and has raised nearly

by the hundred thousand pounds for churches around the country.

`` ?500,000. To cricket and the latest round of

County Championship matches got underway today. In Division One

second placed Somerset travdlled to Birmingham to take on Warwickshire.

Batting first, they reached 237 for three. Nick Compton is unbe`ten on

72. In Division Two, Gloucestershire won the toss and put Derbyshire into

bat in their game at Derby. At the close, the home side was 166 for

six. Well, time now to see what the

sunshine and showers and thhs evening brings more of the same A

few showers out to the West but over in the East many of us are seeing a

pretty pleasant end to the day. Clear spells continue overnhght and

we could see some mist and fog. It will be chillier in the countryside.

A bright start for many tomorrow but we do start to see a risk of

showers. These could be heavy and thundery through the afternoon but

nonetheless temperatures getting up to maybe 18 degrees. Thereafter

things do look unsettled. Wd will see some bright weather at times but

Good evening. Some of us had a pretty good soaking. It downpours

around with thunder and lightning. It wasn't so bad everywhere. The

satellite picture across the Midlands, East Anglia and the south
