And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:10.:00:13.

First tonight, a supermarket cashier has gone on trial accused

:00:14.:00:16.

of preparing to fight for a terrorist group.

:00:17.:00:19.

Ryan Counsell's a Muslim convert who worked on the tills at an ASDA

:00:20.:00:23.

The jury heard that he booked flights, bought military

:00:24.:00:29.

equipment and downloaded an Al-Qaeda bomb-making guide.

:00:30.:00:36.

Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, has been

:00:37.:00:38.

following the case at Woolwich Crown Court.

:00:39.:00:40.

Earlier, he told me about the charges Counsell is facing.

:00:41.:00:42.

We heard today that he was in the advanced stages of planning to

:00:43.:00:45.

travel out to the Philippines to join and to fight for a terrorist

:00:46.:00:48.

group who have pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State.

:00:49.:00:51.

The prosecution said Ryan Counsell had

:00:52.:00:55.

searched online for cheap flights from Nottingham.

:00:56.:00:58.

He'd eventually booked a ticket from Heathrow and

:00:59.:01:01.

was due to fly out only two days after his arrest last July.

:01:02.:01:06.

He's 28 years old, as we've heard

:01:07.:01:10.

He is married with a young child and he worked

:01:11.:01:14.

here on the tills at ASDA in Hyson Green

:01:15.:01:18.

in Nottingham and lived just a few streets away

:01:19.:01:21.

from there and when the police raided his home we heard

:01:22.:01:23.

they found a mass of extremist material,

:01:24.:01:26.

including Islamic State beheading videos

:01:27.:01:29.

and an Al-Qaeda article headed Make A Bomb In The Kitchen

:01:30.:01:32.

They also found military equipment and clothing designed to

:01:33.:01:38.

protect against shrapnel from explosions and some of that was

:01:39.:01:41.

found in his child's bedroom, packed into a suitcase.

:01:42.:01:45.

Ryan Counsell told the police that he was travelling out to the

:01:46.:01:50.

Philippines but that was for aid work.

:01:51.:01:53.

As for those extremist documents and videos, he said that

:01:54.:01:57.

was for academic research, designed to help him counter extremism.

:01:58.:02:01.

As for the military equipment, he said that was

:02:02.:02:04.

for a game called Airsoft, that is similar to paintball,

:02:05.:02:08.

and he has denied for separate terrorism charges.

:02:09.:02:14.

An operation which saw armed police patrolling

:02:15.:02:16.

parts of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire

:02:17.:02:19.

It was in response to the terror attack on a Christmas market

:02:20.:02:24.

in Berlin, which left 12 people dead.

:02:25.:02:30.

The patrols here concentrated on crowded and busy spaces,

:02:31.:02:34.

such as shopping centres and sports venues and lasted for two weeks.

:02:35.:02:37.

Senior police officers say they can't rule out further

:02:38.:02:41.

An investigation's started following the discovery of

:02:42.:02:46.

The grey mare was found last night by a woman walking her dog

:02:47.:02:52.

near Watchwood car park off Gravelly Hollow in Calverton.

:02:53.:02:55.

The RSPCA says it appears to have been dumped by someone and it's

:02:56.:02:59.

appealing for the public's help to trace the owner.

:03:00.:03:03.

A local charity is offering a ?2,000 reward for information.

:03:04.:03:09.

Leicester's oldest-surviving department store is to close

:03:10.:03:12.

Fenwick's has been in business on the corner of Beever Street

:03:13.:03:19.

Its owners are blaming a shift in customers' loyalties and online

:03:20.:03:25.

A Leicester shopping institution, priding itself

:03:26.:03:34.

on quality and reliability for over a century.

:03:35.:03:39.

Built in 1880 as the store Joseph Johnson Co,

:03:40.:03:43.

Today came the announcement it could close as soon as March, a sad day

:03:44.:03:49.

Over the years, you know, we have grown to

:03:50.:03:56.

love Leicester, and the people of Leicester, and the people who work

:03:57.:04:01.

for us, who are all really dedicated.

:04:02.:04:04.

This is one of 11 stores in a nationwide chain

:04:05.:04:11.

They were given the bad news this morning,

:04:12.:04:16.

news that for some could end a career spanning decades.

:04:17.:04:20.

I have been store director for 20 years and many

:04:21.:04:22.

members of staff have been a lot longer than 20 years.

:04:23.:04:26.

We have tried our hardest, it's such a sad day.

:04:27.:04:32.

The closure's being blamed on the rise

:04:33.:04:34.

of online shopping, and a fall in customers, diverted,

:04:35.:04:37.

say those in charge here, to places served

:04:38.:04:39.

Once, this was a thriving retail area

:04:40.:04:45.

Now customers are heading to different

:04:46.:04:52.

centres like Highcross and Fosse Park on the outskirts of the city.

:04:53.:04:55.

The City Council, meanwhile, says the area is seeing

:04:56.:04:58.

It's confident new uses will be found for the building and the area

:04:59.:05:03.

It is, of course, not the first big high-street casualty,

:05:04.:05:08.

leaving customers feeling a sense of loss again.

:05:09.:05:13.

Sorry to see another big player in the middle go.

:05:14.:05:15.

I think it is a great shame, it is a lovely building as well.

:05:16.:05:18.

You don't expect someone like that to

:05:19.:05:20.

The group is now changing the way it does business

:05:21.:05:24.

and about to provide a new online offering,

:05:25.:05:27.

allowing Leicester shoppers to contine shopping.

:05:28.:05:36.

A campaign's underway to honour munition workers

:05:37.:05:39.

from World War One and Two - including those who

:05:40.:05:41.

Staff at the Nottingham factory were amongst those known

:05:42.:05:46.

as the Canary Girls because of the way toxic chemicals

:05:47.:05:50.

Nearly 140 were killed in an explosion there in 1918

:05:51.:05:56.

The campaign is being led by Conservative MP Bill Wiggin,

:05:57.:06:02.

who wants a special veteran's medal created to honour

:06:03.:06:06.

The chairman of the Derbyshire-based firm Sports Direct has survived

:06:07.:06:12.

a second vote by shareholders over his future.

:06:13.:06:16.

It follows a meeting last year at which there were calls

:06:17.:06:19.

for Keith Hellawell to stand down following revelations about

:06:20.:06:21.

Despite more than half of independent shareholders

:06:22.:06:27.

voting against him today, he managed to secure 81%

:06:28.:06:32.

of the overall vote to keep his position,

:06:33.:06:34.

thanks largely to owner Mike Ashley's backing.

:06:35.:06:37.

Shareholders have been expressing their disappointment.

:06:38.:06:40.

It's very unusual to see this level of voting against any individual

:06:41.:06:44.

director and I think it is time that the company really listened

:06:45.:06:48.

to what its shareholders are saying and realise, yes,

:06:49.:06:51.

Mike Ashley is the entrepreneur behind this brand but there

:06:52.:06:55.

are other shareholders with a voice

:06:56.:06:57.

and an opinion and who are very concerned.

:06:58.:07:01.

Next, the challenges facing businesses as Britain prepares

:07:02.:07:04.

to begin the formal process of leaving the European Union.

:07:05.:07:09.

Companies which export their goods will be keeping a particularly close

:07:10.:07:11.

With that in mind, our political reporter, Peter Saull,

:07:12.:07:15.

spent the day at a small car-maker in Nottinghamshire.

:07:16.:07:21.

Designed and built in the Nottinghamshire countryside,

:07:22.:07:24.

2016 saw record sales of new cars and this manufacturer is hoping

:07:25.:07:29.

Not many people have heard of us at the minute but the brand,

:07:30.:07:37.

We want to be seen and known world wide with some of the major

:07:38.:07:44.

All of these cars are manufactured right here in Ollerton

:07:45.:07:50.

and sent all over the world, so what potential problems

:07:51.:07:53.

Will it be a comfortable ride for businesses like these?

:07:54.:08:01.

The referendum divided the two directors here.

:08:02.:08:06.

Our exports are up which are really keen about,

:08:07.:08:12.

We really are showing concerns now about what will happen in Europe

:08:13.:08:17.

in the next couple of years and I think that this is the time

:08:18.:08:21.

that the government has to tell us what is going to happen.

:08:22.:08:23.

Today a chance to put those concerns to the local MP who is also

:08:24.:08:27.

What we can't do is scupper our negotiating hand so the government

:08:28.:08:32.

has to go and get the best deal it possibly can

:08:33.:08:34.

and at that point then, you know, we can then

:08:35.:08:37.

go and trade not only with our European

:08:38.:08:39.

colleagues hopefully but colleagues all over the world

:08:40.:08:41.

so it is about getting the best deal for these companies and we can't do

:08:42.:08:44.

that by announcing what we're trying to achieve before we go

:08:45.:08:47.

In less than three months' time Britain will embark on the most

:08:48.:08:52.

complex negotiations in living memory.

:08:53.:08:58.

The chequered flag will be waved on our membership of the EU but even

:08:59.:09:02.

the Prime Minister admits there will be bumps on the road.

:09:03.:09:06.

And an artist from Nottingham has turned his hobby

:09:07.:09:09.

into a full-time job - building bespoke Scalextric models.

:09:10.:09:14.

Tom Hall has won commissions from customers demanding a range

:09:15.:09:16.

of scaled-down versions of famous motor racing circuits such

:09:17.:09:19.

Orders for his intricate toy tracks are flooding

:09:20.:09:25.

So, it's goodbye from me but, with your weather now, here's Lucy.

:09:26.:09:37.

We have got another cold and frosty night on the way. A little bit less

:09:38.:09:45.

cold than yesterday but still pretty cold. Today we saw plenty of wintry

:09:46.:09:50.

sunshine around and some lovely blue skies. We saw a lovely orange sunset

:09:51.:09:58.

in Rutland. Tomorrow, it looks like there will be a change with more

:09:59.:10:02.

cloud and outbreaks of rain and drizzle. The bigger picture RDs

:10:03.:10:10.

weather fronts coming across the Atlantic that will go towards the

:10:11.:10:13.

south-east and bring cloud and outbreaks of rain. That will leave a

:10:14.:10:19.

legacy of cloud through the weekend. This evening and overnight there

:10:20.:10:24.

will be widespread frost and some patches of freezing fog.

:10:25.:10:27.

Temperatures will fall just below freezing. Colder in the countryside.

:10:28.:10:35.

That weather front pages and from the north and that will bring more

:10:36.:10:40.

in the way of a breeze so any patches of frost and fog lifting

:10:41.:10:45.

quite quickly. Cloud and patchy rain around in the afternoon. By the time

:10:46.:10:53.

we get to the weekend, we have plenty of cloud around on Saturday.

:10:54.:10:57.

creeping up by a notch or two, 10, maybe nine Celsius. Here is Louise

:11:00.:11:02.

with the national picture. Won't it cold and frosty this

:11:03.:11:14.

morning? The coldest night of the winter so far in England. Down to

:11:15.:11:20.

minus 8 Celsius. But widely, the temperatures below freezing. Through
