It's hoped ?300,000 worth of investment will help to boost

East Riding's high streets and lead to the creation of jobs.

The council wants local people to think of projects that could

revitalise town centres, and says the best ideas will be

The Great British High Street hasn't been quite so great in recent years.

There's been lots in our area to try and get shoppers back. Now East

Riding Council is offering grants to groups with ideas to improve town

It might take a lick of paint, it might take some flowers, but at the

end, we want to see a vibrant high Street in our towns, and we want to

create jobs. The council says it's been inspired

in part by the success of this pop shop in Bridlington which was paid

for by a Government grant. It allows people to showcase businesses for a

short time. We have got some good feedback from

here. that high streets are doing better.

Research shows that since 2009, of 6000 stores left vacant when big

companies like Comet went bust. Just 20% are still empty on the

highstreet but that rises to 29% for shopping centres and 37% in retail

parks. Gainsborough is another town in our area that's invested to bring

in more shoppers. Half a million pounds has been spent on roads and

paths to make the city centre more accessible and there have been some

promising results. There are still some vacancies, so

we cannot afford to be complacent. The footfall figures, which we

monitor, are encouraging. It looks as though we are achieving what we

want to, which is to increase visitors and shoppers to come into

Gainsborough. Back in Bridlington, people told me

what they thought could revitalise Well, more parking, if we could get

East Riding Council has put up 300,000 for the project. Now it's

left to groups across the area to come up with ideas, like the pop`up

shop, and bid to take them to the high street.

An event's been held to raise support to save a North Lincolnshire

airfield which could be sold off as farmland.

The council is working with a local gliding club to try and arrange

the purchase of the airstrip, at this RAF base at Kirton in Lindsey.

The Ministry of Defence is selling the land, which it says

Trent Valley gliding club have been here for about 40 years, and we're

trying to preserve the site for the of eight and for the use of the

local community as well. We are trying to facilitate the

transition from military status into civilian status, and show that is a

positive experience not only for the gliding club, but for the residents.
