An investigation is underwax after a man fell to his death | :00:09. | :00:12.
from cliffs in South Shields trying to escape from police. | :00:13. | :00:15.
Karl David Carson, who was 26 and from Boldon Colliery, | :00:16. | :00:20.
was under arrest when he fled from a police car ` | :00:21. | :00:24.
But in the early hours of this morning, the scene of tragedy. | :00:25. | :00:33.
It was at 12.35 this morning when police were called to | :00:34. | :00:36.
a fight here at the car park of the Marsden Grotto. | :00:37. | :00:40.
They arrested Karl Carson, but he escaped while they wdre | :00:41. | :00:43.
Soon as they were able to do so, the officers made a search | :00:44. | :00:54.
of the area to try and locate the man, and, very tragically, | :00:55. | :00:57.
that's when they found he w`s at the bottom of the cliffs on the beach. | :00:58. | :01:01.
The officer immediately attended and tried to give first aid | :01:02. | :01:03.
and continued doing so until paramedics arrived. | :01:04. | :01:05.
Well, we had an engagement party and there was a fight | :01:06. | :01:12.
in the car park afterwards, when everyone was leaving. | :01:13. | :01:14.
Between friends as far as I know, because everybody knew each other. | :01:15. | :01:17.
And then, the next thing we know, a police helicopter was overhead, | :01:18. | :01:19.
I can't believe it's happened, to be honest. | :01:20. | :01:26.
I didn't hear a thing and I'm living just by the back | :01:27. | :01:30.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating | :01:31. | :01:31.
the death and Northumbria Police say that they are supporting | :01:32. | :01:34.
It's been a weekend of unprecedented scenes in | :01:35. | :01:45.
North Yorkshire, with the fhrst ever Le Grand Depart of the Tour de | :01:46. | :01:49.
Organisers say 2.5 million people lined the streets to wave | :01:50. | :01:52.
Stage Two started in York this morning, and quickly | :01:53. | :01:56.
passed through Knaresborough, where Phil Connell is tonight. | :01:57. | :02:10.
How is it going Phil? Well after two days of some unprecedented scenes | :02:11. | :02:19.
here in North Yorkshire, things are beginning to return to norm`l | :02:20. | :02:21.
tonight. Hearing there but there are still a few signs of the totr, the | :02:22. | :02:24.
still a few signs of the tour, the town was voted the best addressed in | :02:25. | :02:26.
Yorkshire. This house here is Yorkshire. This house here is | :02:27. | :02:29.
whether male lives and it is just one example of how North Yorkshire | :02:30. | :02:32.
has captured the spirit of the grand depart. | :02:33. | :02:34.
The Tour de France continued to spread joy throughout Yorkshire | :02:35. | :02:40.
again today as Stage Two kicked off in York and through Harrogate | :02:41. | :02:43.
and Knaresborough ` minus the local area's star attraction, Mark | :02:44. | :02:47.
Cavendish, who crashed out just metres | :02:48. | :02:50.
from the finish line yesterday in front of Harrogate`based family | :02:51. | :02:55.
It's not possible to start, from a medical point of view. | :02:56. | :02:58.
I'm absolutely devastated about it, because one, the Tour de France is | :02:59. | :03:01.
in the UK for another two d`ys, and secondly we have an incredible team. | :03:02. | :03:04.
But the race goes on and here, not not far into stage two, | :03:05. | :03:07.
Knaresborough spectators and their mayor, did not disappoint. | :03:08. | :03:09.
Never been done before, will never be done again. | :03:10. | :03:14.
I think it's absolutely marvellous because it is my hometown and I'm | :03:15. | :03:16.
It is very nice to watch and I like it. | :03:17. | :03:22.
I think it means a lot for Yorkshire, | :03:23. | :03:24.
just basically bringing people together, anything that brings | :03:25. | :03:27.
This is way bigger than what I thought it would be. | :03:28. | :03:33.
And after the incredible success of this Yorkshire Grand Depart, there | :03:34. | :03:38.
are plans for an annual tour of Yorkshire which, if approved, would | :03:39. | :03:41.
see the world's top cyclists return to the county as early as next May. | :03:42. | :03:47.
So as it makes its way out `bout region after a remarkable weekend, | :03:48. | :03:51.
we just might see scenes like this again in the not`too`distant future. | :03:52. | :04:09.
That legacy left by the tour is what people will be talking about. We | :04:10. | :04:14.
know it cost about ?4 million to bring this to Yorkshire, but | :04:15. | :04:19.
organisers say it could gendrate around ?100 million for the local | :04:20. | :04:20.
economy. Back to you. Thousands of people have enjoyed | :04:21. | :04:22.
a taste of what life was like sixty years ago at a special | :04:23. | :04:25.
festival of the 1950s at thd They recreated a whole 1950s | :04:26. | :04:28.
experience for visitors ` from getting your own "roll over" hairdo | :04:29. | :04:33.
` to jiving at the local hop. There's also been | :04:34. | :04:36.
the chance to admire and relinisce about some of the legendary gadgets | :04:37. | :04:39.
and appliances which were all Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul | :04:40. | :04:43.
was the hero for the Netherlands He saved two penalties to send them | :04:44. | :04:51.
into the semi`finals, after coming on in the last minute | :04:52. | :04:56.
of extra time for the penalty shoot`out against Costa Rica in the | :04:57. | :04:59.
quarter`finals of the World Cup The weather prospects | :05:00. | :05:05.
now to start the week. As we head | :05:06. | :05:07.
into this evening we will still have a few showers out and about, | :05:08. | :05:12.
but they will tend fizzle out and for many us, as we head overnight, | :05:13. | :05:15.
it will become mostly dry. Northumberland holding onto | :05:16. | :05:18.
a bit more in the way of cloud Now, temperatures on the whole | :05:19. | :05:21.
into double figures ` In more rural spots it will get | :05:22. | :05:24.
a bit cooler. Tomorrow morning it is a mixture | :05:25. | :05:28.
of bright and sunny spells but also showers and they will | :05:29. | :05:31.
continue, on and off in places, Still plenty of sunshine though, | :05:32. | :05:33.
with temperatures rising to That's it, we are back later shower | :05:34. | :05:37.
tonight, after Wimbledon and to Hello again. Today's big event was | :05:38. | :06:13.
certainly blessed by fine weather, but there has been some rain around | :06:14. | :06:23.
here and there. Those showers will continue to drift further east over | :06:24. | :06:27.
the next few hours, but by and large, they should become more | :06:28. | :06:29.
confined to | :06:30. | :06:30. |
