It's a bit unusual, the weather situation at the moment | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
in that we're pretty sure we know what's going to happen | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
for the next couple of days and for the start of next week. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
It's what happens in between, particularly so on Friday, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
that there's some uncertainty. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
More on that in a moment, though, because the sure thing at the moment | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
is that most having frosty mornings followed by sunny skies by day. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
There are a few showers around on Wednesday | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
across northern Scotland and in Northern Ireland, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
but for most, it'll be dry and bright with some winter sunshine. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
And after we start below freezing, well below in some places, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
we're up to 4 to 8 Celsius for most come the afternoon. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Colder across northern Scotland, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
and feeling significantly colder because of that brisk wind | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
which continues to bring snow showers | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
across northern Scotland on Wednesday evening. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Potentially, it could be icy here. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
A bit more cloud drifting southwards overnight across England and Wales, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
but for most, it's clear and, again, it's going to be cold. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
A widespread hard frost for Thursday morning. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Some mist and fog - that should clear away. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
Again, through the day, a sprinkling of showers, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
chiefly in northern Scotland. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
For most, it's another dry, sunny day. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
And, again, after we start below freezing, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
we're up to 4 to 6 or 7 come the afternoon. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
Feeling quite pleasant, actually, in the sunshine, out of the wind. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
Friday is again, by and large, a dry, bright day | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
with a cold, cold start. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
But there are complications in the west. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Lots more cloud here, and the risk of some wet weather, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
particularly across the south-west. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
It is just a risk at the moment, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
because there's a lot of uncertainty | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
about which of these two areas of low pressure develops. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
If it's the one to the south-west, as I say, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
potentially some heavy rain here. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
The reason why there's uncertainty about these areas of low pressure | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
is actually tied in to this area of low pressure in North America, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
which is intensifying at the moment. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
It's quite a beast, this, bringing some heavy snow | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
and strong winds across the north-east of Canada in particular. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
But for us, the crucial thing is as that low drives northwards, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
it really takes some warm air northwards | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
through the mid-Atlantic, up towards Greenland. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
And it's the boundary between the warm and cold air | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
that drives the jet stream. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
Instead of the jet stream driving straight across the Atlantic, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
it's going north with that warm air, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
before, like a rollercoaster, it drives southwards rapidly | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
to the west of the UK, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
picking up those areas of low pressure, possibly, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
and intensifying them. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
Uncertainty, then, about Friday, but we are pretty confident | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
that by Saturday, as the jet stream drives southwards, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
where we've got this kink, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
the low-pressure system will be sitting in here, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
bringing, potentially, quite a wet weekend | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
to parts of southern France and Spain. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
For us, with a low drifting to the south, lots of isobars on the chart. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
It's going to be a windy day, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
and that wind will be coming in from the east, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
feeling bitter, certainly across England and Wales. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
For Scotland and Northern Ireland, the winds are lighter, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
so here it's a similar sort of day on Saturday. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
Again, many places dry, some showers in the east. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
But for England and Wales, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
these are the sort of temperatures we're seeing for the next few days, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
but add on the wind, it will feel a lot colder this weekend. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
Into the early part of next week | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
and low pressure continues to meander across central Europe. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
High pressure building in across the UK, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
so a dry start to the working week next week. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Notice this bit of blue. It's a weather front | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
which will try and topple in against the higher pressure | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
and could introduce a bit of rain. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
Uncertainty about that, but the overall feeling | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
is that higher pressure will then move back to the UK. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
So, for next week, it's staying on the cold side. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
A sunny start. Frosty start, too. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
A brief bit of wet weather around | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
before things probably turn drier again | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
around the middle part of the week. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Lots going on. We'll, as always, keep you updated. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
