Hello. High pressure in control and, for most of us, this dry

0:00:020:00:05

spell of weather will last well into next week, but we will eventually

0:00:050:00:08

start to see some changes, some subtle changes in the big picture.

0:00:080:00:12

Right now, though, it's all about the small changes

0:00:120:00:14

in where we see the cloud, because

0:00:140:00:16

it does make such a difference, the sunshine at this time of year.

0:00:160:00:18

We are close, of course, to the equinox.

0:00:180:00:20

Beautiful day in Western Scotland. In the sunshine, 16 degrees.

0:00:200:00:23

In Eastern England, in the gloom and the mist,

0:00:230:00:26

it was just 5-6 Celsius.

0:00:260:00:28

Now, we'll keep big contrasts with the weather over the next few days

0:00:280:00:32

but the areas that we see the cloud and the sun, they will be varying.

0:00:320:00:36

Take Wednesday for example.

0:00:360:00:38

A brighter feel eventually across the Midlands, Wales.

0:00:380:00:41

Southern England brightening up, too.

0:00:410:00:42

Further North, there will be more cloud but I still fancy, with

0:00:420:00:45

a bit of sunshine, parts of the Highlands could reach 16 Celsius.

0:00:450:00:48

Elsewhere, again, the East coast generally chilly,

0:00:480:00:51

just 5-6 and quite gloomy.

0:00:510:00:53

A bit of sunshine and other areas could reach 10-11 Celsius.

0:00:530:00:56

There's the area of high pressure dominating things across the UK.

0:00:560:01:00

Only slowly starting to move.

0:01:000:01:02

Across the South, there will still be a brisk breeze on Thursday.

0:01:020:01:06

If anything, here there should be a bit more sunshine.

0:01:060:01:08

Further North, it will be quite a cloudy day and, again,

0:01:080:01:11

look at the temperatures. Responding to the sunshine, 10, 11, 12 Celsius.

0:01:110:01:14

Where it's gloomy, we're just at 6-7 degrees.

0:01:140:01:17

Now, the high-pressure still keeping the weather fronts at bay

0:01:170:01:20

through Thursday and Friday

0:01:200:01:21

but it is just very slowly wobbling its way into the Western Atlantic.

0:01:210:01:26

A subtle shift bringing subtle changes in the wind direction,

0:01:260:01:30

which has a big impact on where we see the cloud.

0:01:300:01:32

Brightest weather on Friday

0:01:320:01:34

likely to be South Wales, South-west England.

0:01:340:01:37

Quite a lot of clouds and a brisk breeze on the East coast.

0:01:370:01:39

Again, where it's gloomy, we're only looking at 6-7 Celsius.

0:01:390:01:43

Now, the high continues to shift down towards

0:01:430:01:45

Ireland during Saturday,

0:01:450:01:46

which means the wind's coming around the top of that high,

0:01:460:01:49

from a cool direction, from the North,

0:01:490:01:51

and also bringing more moisture with them.

0:01:510:01:53

So, again, a lot of cloud on Saturday.

0:01:530:01:55

Not much brightness and, as a result,

0:01:550:01:58

temperatures just 6-7 Celsius.

0:01:580:02:00

If we see some sunshine, we could get into double figures.

0:02:000:02:03

The high is still with us on Sunday so, again, it is a largely dry theme

0:02:030:02:06

but again, just subtly shifting a little further South,

0:02:060:02:09

with a breeze coming round the top of that high bringing moisture

0:02:090:02:12

from the Atlantic, it is going to be predominantly cloudy

0:02:120:02:15

through this weekend.

0:02:150:02:16

There will be some holes here and there and, with a bit of sun,

0:02:160:02:19

we'll see temperatures jumping

0:02:190:02:21

but, for most, it's grey and chilly at just 6-7 Celsius.

0:02:210:02:24

But, for most, the winds will be light.

0:02:240:02:27

So gradual changes between this week and next.

0:02:270:02:28

At the moment we've got this blocking pattern.

0:02:280:02:31

This is the jet stream, that fast-moving ribbon high up,

0:02:310:02:34

driving to the North of the UK and meaning the low-pressure systems

0:02:340:02:37

are largely in the Mediterranean or in the Atlantic, and allowing this

0:02:370:02:41

big area of high pressure just to sit across us, keeping things dry.

0:02:410:02:45

Fast forward to next week, it's the same pattern.

0:02:450:02:47

We've got that big loop in the jet stream,

0:02:470:02:50

but it's all shifted a little bit further West.

0:02:500:02:53

We call this retrogression.

0:02:530:02:55

Now, one of the reasons for this

0:02:550:02:56

is what's going on in the United States.

0:02:560:02:59

We'll have more on that this time tomorrow.

0:02:590:03:01

But, for the moment, we need to focus on the high pressure just

0:03:010:03:04

shifting a little bit further, which will introduce more of a breeze,

0:03:040:03:08

more isobars on the charts as we go into next week, and a continuation

0:03:080:03:13

introducing more moisture, so the potential for a little bit of rain,

0:03:130:03:16

particularly away from the high across the Northern parts of the UK.

0:03:160:03:19

With the winds coming from the North-west, it'll stay chilly.

0:03:190:03:22

There will be some showers, with the driest of the weather

0:03:220:03:24

hanging on across the South and South-west. Goodbye.
