Hello. Welcome. The weather's going to take on | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
a completely different complexion, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
but at the moment, well, it feels like summer out there, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
with long sunny spells, blue skies... | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
Mind you, humidity is high, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
and it's that combination of heat and humidity | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
which in some places is sparking some thunderstorms. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
We saw some on Monday, we're going to see some scattered around the UK | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
over the next few days. Very localised, very hit-and-miss, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
but if you catch one, yes, it could be quite nasty. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
In fact, the odd storm | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
first thing in the morning across the south-east. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
These will tend to fade away, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
but some showers further north and west across the UK, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
and although many of us will have a lot of fine, dry, sunny weather, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
showers will develop more widely come the afternoon. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
Now, nailing down exactly where these storms are going to occur | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
is a bit of a job. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
So take this map... not too literally. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Shows the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
through the afternoon. Many of us will avoid these, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
but if you catch one, it'll be quite torrential - | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
some hail, some gusty winds, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
the possibility of some flash flooding as well. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Lot of warmth out there, slightly higher temperatures than on Monday | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
across central and eastern areas. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
Still cool around the north-eastern coast of Scotland | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
but inland, with that heat and humidity, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
yes, some nasty thunderstorms. Up over the high ground, mostly, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
but they'll drift into populated areas as well, I think, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
as we head into the evening time. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
So if you are on the move, watch out for the potential of thunderstorms, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
the possibility of some flash flooding. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
Check out your BBC local radio station for travel disruption. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
So these showers rumbling on into the night | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
and the odd one could continue into Wednesday morning, in actual fact. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
The potential for further showers around, but some warm sunshine too. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Probably fewer showers by Thursday, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
temperatures just beginning to ease down a touch. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Still some humidity out there through Wednesday and Thursday, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
but it's not going to last forever. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Fresher conditions trying to come in off the Atlantic. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
The catch is, with those fresher conditions, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
we'll also see some fairly active weather fronts and they'll start to | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
push in our direction just in time for the weekend. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
In fact, Friday is the switchover day, really - | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
a very different look to the weather chart on Friday. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
A lot more cloud around. Bands of rain pushing in from the west, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
and we could see some fairly prolonged wet weather | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
up and down the UK. Again, don't take this chart too literally, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
but it gives us the potential for some heavy rain, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
and temperatures will be lower for many of us than they have been. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
On into the weekend, then. Bands of rain pushing in from the south-west. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
Some drier spells in between, some pleasant sunshine, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
but don't rely on that sunshine, because further showers, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
longer spells of rain could well develop later on in the day. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
I'm going to take you down to Florida, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
where we have Tropical Storm Colin, the third named storm of the season. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
It's bringing a lot of heavy rain into Florida as I speak. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Now, the track of Colin is going to be quite interesting | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
over the next few days. It's going to push up the Eastern Seaboard | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
and then into the Atlantic. It will no longer be a tropical storm, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
but it's going to inject a lot of energy into the Atlantic | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and into the jet stream in particular. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
So the jet stream is going to start to liven up | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
as we head toward the weekend and indeed beyond. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
In fact, next week it's going to be tracking its way to the south of us, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
so we're going to be on the northern side, the cool side of that, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and this little dip in the jet stream, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
we're going to get an area of low pressure | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
pretty much lodged slap-bang on top of us. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
A slow-moving area of low pressure. What does that mean? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Certainly cooler. We're all going to see some wet weather at times, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
some of that quite heavy. There will be some drier spells, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
but certainly not the sort of drier spells that you can rely upon. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
We'll give you another update again tomorrow. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
