Hi there. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
As we look towards the end of the month and beyond, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
it looks as if we're in for a turbulent spell of weather. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
No two days the same. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
We're going to see some wet and windy conditions, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
interspersed by some shorter, settled spells. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
We start with rain across eastern England on Sunday morning, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
that won't last long. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
Brighter skies following, and a whole packet of showers, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
some of these could be heavy. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Thundery across northwestern areas, some hail mixed in too. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
It's going to be one of those days. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Sunshine and showers, chopping and changing from hour to hour. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
In the best of the sunshine, temperatures mid to high-teens. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
Cooler than Saturday across eastern England. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
When the showers come along, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
those temperatures will be falling away by several degrees. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
They'll continue into the night across northwestern areas, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
then a bit of a lull through the early hours of Monday, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
before this blob of blue arrives. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
This is proving to be a headache for us forecasters, because getting | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
the track of this area of low pressure is proving very difficult. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
The bottom line is to expect some rain at some stage on Monday. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
Some of it could be heavy and persistent. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
And where you see several hours of rain, it could be quite cool, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
particularly through central areas. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
That area of low pressure whistles away, to be followed by | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
a whole succession of fronts and low pressures through the week ahead, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
continuing that turbulent spell I spoke about. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
In between, mind you, there'll be some gaps, so some sunshine. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
That's really the gist as we look through the next few days. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
There will be some wet and windy weather, some of which could | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
cause some disruption, so watch this space for warnings. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
But, in between, there will be sunshine too. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
So Monday's rain clears out of the way, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
followed very swiftly by another area of wet and windy weather, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
targeting the northwest of the UK. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
Particularly further south and east, it'll be drier and brighter, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
warmer as well, temperatures getting up to the low-20s. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
That'll be tempered by the winds, very strong winds across | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
the North West for a time, watch out for warnings for that. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
And then another lull as we head towards the middle of the week, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
a little ridge of high pressure, could be quite chilly overnight. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
Before the next area of low pressure arrives on our doorstep from | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
the west, that'll be spreading more wind and rain, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
again to the more northwestern areas. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
That's where the worst of the weather will be in the week ahead. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Further south and east, not much rain, and the winds lighter as well. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
But a sting in the tail of this area of low pressure. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
You see the tightness of the isobars, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
indicating potentially some very stormy conditions across | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
parts of Scotland, maybe northern England as well. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
Again, we could feel the need to issue someone warnings, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
closer to that event. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
That clears out of the way, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
then another one of those lulls on Thursday. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
The winds dying down, sunshine returning, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
it should feel pleasant in some places out of the breeze. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Why is the weather so turbulent? | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Well, at this time of the year, the Arctic is cooling down rapidly, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
you can see the expanding area of blue. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
We've also got some tropical air coming up from the south. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
Where those two air masses are meeting across the heart of America, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
during the course of next week, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
we get the jet stream becoming quite supercharged. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
A strong jet stream, then rippling its way downstream, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
getting the position of these ripples is proving quite difficult. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
Our computer model's still quite uncertain about the detail as | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
we end the week. But in general, it does look as if, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
to the north of the jet stream, low pressure will dominate. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
To the south, high pressure. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
And that replicates itself in terms of the weather. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Closest to the area of low pressure, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
that's where we're most likely to see unsettled, wet and windy spells. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
Whereas closest to the high-pressure area to the south, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
that's where we're likely to see the more settled conditions. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
But, at this time of year, of course, with light winds overnight, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
that brings the potential for some lingering fog patches as well. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
I'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
