As you're no doubt aware, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
Hurricane Matthew is rampaging through the Caribbean | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
with devastating effect, but what influence might it have | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
on our weather in the week ahead and how? | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
We'll see in a moment. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Now, it's fine and settled across the UK. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
This is a shot taken by one of our weather watchers | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
on Tuesday, the sunshine setting off the autumn colours. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Why is it so settled? | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
A huge area of high pressure plonked over Scandinavia | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
and it's keeping these rain-bearing weather fronts | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
at bay for the most part. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
Now, the feed of air off the continent | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
does contain some cloud, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
but that cloud is thin and liable to break up | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
so to all intents and purposes, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
it's going to be a reasonable day with some sunshine. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
In the sunshine, it shouldn't feel too bad, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
but that breeze has something of an edge to it | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
and temperatures just a little bit lower | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
than they have been so mid-teens, typically, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
not too bad in the sunshine. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
That high pressure remains dominant | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
for several days to come. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
What we are going to find, actually, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
from Wednesday into Thursday | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
is some chillier air circulating | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
around the high and beginning to head in our direction. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
I've put on the colour blue here. Don't get too alarmed, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
it's not going to be frigid air | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
by any stretch of the imagination, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
but it is going to turn chillier, I think, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
through Thursday and that breeze really will | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
have quite an edge to it | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
and the cloud will be a bit thicker as well. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
One or two showers, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
particularly across the more southern | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
and eastern parts of the UK, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
but I must stress that most places will stay dry. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Hopefully, you'll see some sunshine. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
Some of the best of that across the north-western areas | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
where you've got some shelter from the breeze, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
but a chilly feel and again on Friday, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
getting the distribution of this cloud will not be easy, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
but generally it's the more eastern areas | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
which will see thicker cloud | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
and the risk of some showers | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
and on into the weekend again, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
western areas with some shelter from that breeze | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
probably seeing the best of the sunshine. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
Temperatures, though, struggling | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
and where the skies remain clear overnight, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
we could see touches of frost. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Again on Sunday, a few showers dotted around, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
particularly across some more eastern areas. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Western areas seeing the best of the sunshine, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
but feeling cool. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
Now, back to that hurricane. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
We've had impacts, of course, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
as it tore through Haiti - | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
this just one picture of the devastation which it's caused | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
and it's been tracking its way | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
northwards through eastern parts of Cuba | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
and then it emerges on Wednesday | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
out into open water again | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
where it could re-intensify | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
as it ploughs its way through the Bahamas. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
The question is where does it go next | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
and there is an increasing signal | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
that it could make landfall | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
on the eastern seaboard of the States | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
so for the likes of Florida, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
up towards Georgia and the Carolinas, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
an increasing chance | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
of major impacts from this hurricane. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Then it tracks its way northwards, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
no longer a hurricane, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
but a major low pressure system, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
and it could well end up | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
as far north as Newfoundland | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
or perhaps on into Greenland | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
and that could actually build | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
this area of high pressure closer to home | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
so the stormy weather could actually | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
lead to a continuation of the fine weather | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
for us with some caveats. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
It does look as if we could see | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
some showers developing more widely | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
and also some even chillier air | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
coming down in the flow from the north-east, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
again not desperately cold, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
it's only October, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
but temperatures really disappointing. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
They go below the normal - green is normal - | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
and there's some variation in the signal | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
from the computer models, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
but they're all pretty consistent | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
that all the way through next week, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
temperatures will remain below normal | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
for the time of year. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
So, to sum up, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
next week stays chilly for sure. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
There will be some showers around, we think, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
particularly across some eastern areas. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
It looks like western areas | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
with some shelter from that breeze | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
will see the best of the dry and bright weather. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
