Hi, there. Some interesting developments taking place | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
in the atmosphere in the week ahead, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
but I'm pretty confident we won't see anything quite as dramatic | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
as we saw exactly 29 years ago, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
when the Great Storm of October 1987 | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
swept across the country | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
with devastating effect, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
and this was the sort of scene | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
which some of us woke up to | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
across southern parts of the UK | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
on the morning of the 16th. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Nothing that dramatic on the menu. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
We will have a low pressure in close attendance | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
over the next couple of days, but it's much flabbier. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
The isobars around it | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
aren't so tightly squeezed, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
so the winds won't be as strong, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
though there will be some blustery showers | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
circulating around that low pressure system. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
There'll be some variety in our weather - | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
wet weather, for example, across the north of Scotland | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
on Saturday afternoon. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Further south, we saw blue skies and sunshine in Lancashire. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
And we'll keep that variety going | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
over the next couple of days. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
So, on Sunday, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
one band of showery rain pushes northwards | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
through England, Wales and Northern Ireland | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
and into the heart of Scotland. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Followed in turn by those brighter skies again, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
the sun coming out | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
for much of England and Wales, actually. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
There will be some showers out west, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
but in the sunshine, very pleasant indeed. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
Temperatures once more up into | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
the mid-to-high teens. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
But where it's wet - for example, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
across the heart of Highlands Scotland - | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
it won't feel all that warm. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
That low pressure's still there, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
it's anchored to the north-west. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
And it's areas closest to that low, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
as we get on into Monday, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
which will see most of the showers, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
particularly for Northern Ireland | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
and Scotland. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
By and large, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
the further south and east we are, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
there'll be fewer showers, lighter winds, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
there'll be more sunshine | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
and it'll feel quite warm again. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Temperatures once more | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
into the mid-to-high teens across | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
these more southern and eastern parts | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
of the UK. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
Further north and west, though, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
with more showers around, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
it will be cooler here, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
with 12 or 13 more typical | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
for Northern Ireland and Scotland. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
Now, as we head towards Tuesday and Wednesday, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
that low pressure system is going to | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
sort of waddle its way across the country, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
bringing some fairly heavy bursts of rain | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
down with it. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
And in the wake of that, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
still some cloud and showers on Tuesday | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
and we're going to start to draw in some cooler | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
northerly winds, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
so temperatures really struggling, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
just, what, 11-13 degrees typically | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
and that cooling trend | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
a sign of things to come. | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
Now, Hurricane Nicole, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
it's been around for a week or so now. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
It's still stuck out there | 0:02:02 | 0:02:02
in the middle of the Atlantic. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
It could well play a part | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
in our weather later on this week. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
No longer a hurricane, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
but it'll surge a lot of energy northwards | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
and the downstream effect of that | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
will be to build this area of high pressure. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
From midweek on, really, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
that's set to dominate our weather. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
So that means the weather's | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
actually going to settle down | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
by virtue of Nicole. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Still some showers across eastern England | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
on that cool northerly breeze. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
The best of the dry and bright weather | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
further north and west, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
but, again, it's quite a cool air stream, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
so temperatures not all that great. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
And similarly on Thursday, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
that cool breeze bringing more showers | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
to East Anglia and the south-east. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
By and large, the further north and west we are, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
it'll be drier, it'll be quieter, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
with some sunshine by day. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
But with clear skies overnight, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
temperatures will be falling away. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Some chilly nights to come this week. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
Could see some frost around | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
across the north and west | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
and some lingering fog patches as well. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
Now, the atmosphere is very blocked - | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
it has been for much of October. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
Normally, we have quite a strong, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
westerly jet stream, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
but just look how contorted it is | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
and it's going to remain so | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
for some time to come, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
and that's going to prevent | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
those weather systems really making | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
much of an inroad in off the Atlantic. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
Those northerly or easterly winds | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
will continue to dominate. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
That means mostly dry weather | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
next weekend. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
Quite chilly, though, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
particularly as the winds pick up. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
Could well be that eventually rain | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
will start to push in from the west | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
as those fronts liven up, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
but watch this space. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
I will update you again this time tomorrow. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Do I know these people? | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
Does anyone really know anyone? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34 |
