Hello again. There are some big changes in the weather pattern

0:00:020:00:04

as we head towards New Year but the next few days continues

0:00:040:00:07

this very boisterous weather, if you like.

0:00:070:00:09

Strong jet stream picking up areas of low pressure.

0:00:090:00:12

Another storm is going to develop out in the Atlantic

0:00:120:00:15

from this area of cloud,

0:00:150:00:16

that's going to be Storm Conor.

0:00:160:00:18

More recently, of course, we've been battered,

0:00:180:00:20

especially in the north and west by Storm Barbara.

0:00:200:00:22

That, though, is blowing away

0:00:220:00:24

the centre of low pressure,

0:00:240:00:26

moving away from the UK.

0:00:260:00:27

Still a lot of isobars on the chart

0:00:270:00:30

so it will be very windy once again.

0:00:300:00:32

And through the night into Christmas Eve,

0:00:320:00:35

we're going to find lots of showers

0:00:350:00:37

continuing across the north,

0:00:370:00:38

blustery winds too, and some more snow

0:00:380:00:40

in the hills and mountains of Scotland again

0:00:400:00:42

so really, pretty atrocious weather here.

0:00:420:00:44

It could be quite icy as well.

0:00:440:00:46

Further south, skies will clear,

0:00:460:00:48

the winds won't be as strong,

0:00:480:00:49

it will be a little on the chilly side.

0:00:490:00:52

More windy weather though

0:00:520:00:53

across northern parts of the UK

0:00:530:00:55

on Christmas Eve and more frequent showers.

0:00:550:00:57

Again, wintry in Scotland,

0:00:570:00:59

a few showers for England and Wales

0:00:590:01:01

but much drier as you head

0:01:010:01:03

further south and east, sunshine.

0:01:030:01:05

Temperatures may be in double figures,

0:01:050:01:06

it'll feel much colder further north

0:01:060:01:08

though with all that wet and windy weather

0:01:080:01:10

and rain arrives in the north-west later on.

0:01:100:01:13

That will move northwards during the night.

0:01:130:01:15

Christmas Day morning though

0:01:150:01:17

will be extremely mild -

0:01:170:01:19

13, 14, even 15 degrees.

0:01:190:01:21

But there will be a lot of cloud,

0:01:210:01:22

there'll be some really gusty winds,

0:01:220:01:24

especially over into the east of high ground,

0:01:240:01:26

and this weather front will focus

0:01:260:01:28

a band of thicker cloud and rain,

0:01:280:01:29

that will move its way slowly southwards.

0:01:290:01:31

Ahead of it, the mild air continues

0:01:310:01:33

to the north where it gets cold enough

0:01:330:01:35

for some wintry showers in the north of Scotland

0:01:350:01:37

later on Christmas Day so, belatedly,

0:01:370:01:39

it may be a white Christmas

0:01:390:01:41

but only probably in the north of Scotland.

0:01:410:01:43

That colder air comes in behind that cold front,

0:01:430:01:45

pushing away all the mild air.

0:01:450:01:47

Got to focus, though, on the area of low pressure

0:01:470:01:50

that's to the north of Scotland -

0:01:500:01:52

that, of course, by Boxing Day,

0:01:520:01:54

will be Conor, Storm Conor,

0:01:540:01:56

and it's on Boxing Day that

0:01:560:01:57

it's going to be closest to the UK.

0:01:570:01:59

You can see how it just spins round a little bit

0:01:590:02:02

and just hits the far north-east of Scotland.

0:02:020:02:05

It's here we have the amber wind warning.

0:02:050:02:07

By Boxing Day, 80mph winds or so.

0:02:070:02:09

Very gusty winds for the rest of Scotland,

0:02:090:02:11

quite a few wintry showers too.

0:02:110:02:13

Further south, it's much drier

0:02:130:02:15

and the winds won't be as strong either.

0:02:150:02:17

As we head into Tuesday,

0:02:170:02:18

we're all again in that colder air

0:02:180:02:20

but across northern parts of the UK,

0:02:200:02:22

it may not feel quite as cold by Tuesday

0:02:220:02:24

because the wind won't be as strong by then.

0:02:240:02:26

Conor long gone and instead

0:02:260:02:28

we're building up high pressure

0:02:280:02:30

from the near continent from the south,

0:02:300:02:32

settling things down,

0:02:320:02:33

bringing a lot more dry weather and some sunshine

0:02:330:02:36

and the winds will be lighter as well.

0:02:360:02:39

The position of the high will be crucial.

0:02:390:02:41

Nearer the centre of the high pressure

0:02:410:02:43

in the south-east of the UK,

0:02:430:02:45

we may have some frost and some fog,

0:02:450:02:47

hopefully a bit of sunshine as well,

0:02:470:02:49

but as you head more towards

0:02:490:02:50

the north-west, things will be different.

0:02:500:02:52

So nearer the centre of the high pressure, this is where the

0:02:520:02:55

winds will be lighter, we've got the threat of frost and fog.

0:02:550:02:58

Further north and west though, we'll have a much stronger wind,

0:02:580:03:01

it's going to be pretty mild,

0:03:010:03:02

but it means much more cloud and across the north-west,

0:03:020:03:05

there could be some weather fronts just bringing some spells of

0:03:050:03:09

thicker cloud and rain as well.

0:03:090:03:10

Now, as we head towards New Year,

0:03:100:03:13

this is where we get a significant change

0:03:130:03:15

because the high pressure then gets pushed away down much further south,

0:03:150:03:18

fades away, and instead,

0:03:180:03:20

behind a weather front that's coming down to bring some rain,

0:03:200:03:23

we get some northerly winds

0:03:230:03:24

so it'll be colder, cleaner air

0:03:240:03:25

but there may be a few wintry showers.

0:03:250:03:27

Goodbye.
