Whilst we go about our busy daily lives, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
it's difficult to make time for ourselves, let alone anyone else. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
Well, today, all of that is going to change. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
On this street, in this neighbourhood, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
all the people that live here are going to come together | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
to celebrate one special person. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
Someone who deserves a big thank you for being on hand 24/7 | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
to help absolutely everybody in her community. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
So we're holding a street auction to raise money just for her. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
Three, two, one. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
-Good luck. -Good luck. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
We'll be going the extra mile to pull it off... | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Oh, we've hit the jackpot. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
I don't know where to start, there's so much in here. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
..and showing you how to pinpoint | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
the valuable knick-knacks in your home. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Probably a low grade of silver, I wouldn't say any more than 800. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
-What's the Sterling grade? 925? -Mm. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
It's cut glass crystal. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
The edges are much sharper, it's much better quality all round. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
But will we do enough to get the £500 we need | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
to give her a well-earned break? | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
Today, we're tracking down prize collectables | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
in a place famed for a spectacular cathedral | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
that's the final resting place of royalty | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
and the backdrop to blockbusting movies. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
It's the West Country city of Gloucester. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Now in her mid-50s, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
Vinette Poyser has lived here most of her life, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and for decades she's worked tirelessly | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
to ensure no-one in her community goes without, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
despite being in constant pain herself. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
She's a bright, smiley face. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
She's an absolutely amazing woman. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
I think when Vinette was born, they broke the mould. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
THEY LAUGH | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
Vinette was the 11th of 12 children. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
But, at a very early age, her life was turned upside down. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
My mother left when I was... | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
I remember my mother left when I was small, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
and then I was left with my father | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
and then he couldn't look after me. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
She finally settled with a family in the community, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
but it wasn't the loving home she craved. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
I don't know why... why I had to be picked on. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
I was getting some real beatings, you know. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
I had to do all the chores in the house and everything. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
I had to get up early in the morning, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
I had to get up at four o'clock, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
so I was always on this edge all the time. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
With the help of older siblings, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Vinette finally left when she was 15. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
I was the happiest because otherwise I would have taken my life. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
She went on to marry in her 20s, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
but, when the relationship broke down, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
she was left to care for her daughters, Sherine and Charlotte. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
I grew up watching her do literally everything. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
Whatever they liked, I just did it just to make them feel happy | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
and comfortable. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
They wouldn't be without, not like how I went without. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
It was hard. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
In recent years, Vinette has also faced a daily struggle | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
with fibromyalgia, a condition that causes extreme sensitivity to pain. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
My whole body just lights up in pain. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
It stops me from sleeping, I'll toss and turn. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
It's testament to Vinette's extraordinary strength of character | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
that she simply refuses to be ground down | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
by the many knocks she's had in life. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
All the things that were negative, | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
I've learned to turn them into something positive | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
because it means so much to me to make somebody happy. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
And, boy, does she make her local community happy. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
Her day job of caring for people in the community | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
takes her all over the neighbourhood, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
helping the older residents with chores and appointments. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
On top of that, she set up a swimming club for the over-60s, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
offers respite for those caring for a loved one | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
and even finds time to volunteer at a lunch club | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
for the elderly and vulnerable. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
They see her as a really nice, friendly face. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
And she's a person that many members | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
of the local Afro-Caribbean community | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
turn to in times of trouble. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
I feel very privileged to be there for them. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
That will never stop. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
As long as they want me, that will never stop. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
529. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35 | |
Vinette's passion for doing good is well overdue proper recognition. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
With her and her husband, Hugo, working as carers, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
it's hard for them to find quality time to spend together, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
so we want to send them off on a much-needed break. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
It'll cost £500, and here's how we're going to make money. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
We've asked all of Vinette's friends, family and neighbours | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
to donate any unwanted or unloved items they have | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
gathering dust, so we can sell them here at our street party | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
and pop-up auction. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:04
Now, it's a huge task, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
I can't do it by myself, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
so I drafted in the help of a couple of friends | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
who know how to turn unwanted clutter into cash. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
Danny Sebastian's a whip-smart dealer... | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
I'll stick my hand out at 60 quid. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
..and Izzie Balmer's an auctioneer | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
who knows what makes the grade under the gavel. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
Down the centre, selling... | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
-GAVEL BANGS -Sold. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Wow! What a lovely day! | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
It is absolutely glorious. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
-Tell you what, I'm in the mood to rummage today. -Absolutely. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
-I can't wait. -On that note... -No time for talking. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
-See you later. -Ciao! | 0:05:45 | 0:05:46
So it's game on for rummage day. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Danny and Izzie will be fighting it out | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
to see who can gather the best donations... | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
What have you got for me? | 0:05:54 | 0:05:55
..and they'll be sharing their top tips | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
on how to dig out the undiscovered valuables in your home. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
Danny's first off the starting blocks... | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Straight in, is it? | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
-What's his name? -Mouse. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
-Mouse? -Mouse. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:09
..with Vinette's neighbour, Valerie, and her grandson, Daniel. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
Ay up. What have we got? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
China dolls. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:18
China dolls. You've got how many, hundreds? | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
I've had hundreds of them. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
-Did you used to collect them, then? -Yeah. -Oh, you used to collect them. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
-I used to have them all the way around here. -Did you? | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
-Dust collectors. -They are dust collectors, yes. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
I wouldn't write them off just yet. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
To value a doll, look out for the maker's name and mould number | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
on the back, neck or feet. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
This one's not an antique, but it'll make us £5 or so. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
But generous Valerie isn't stopping there. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
I found these. If they're any good. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
-Can they go, Valerie? -Yes. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:52
These are good quality... cut glass. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
-Cor, they're heavy. -Yeah, they've got a bit of weight to them. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
This is the kind of collectable that really shines on the pop-up rostrum. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
Best of all, Valerie's throwing in six glasses too. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
I'll be hoping for £30. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
A cupboard upstairs, a dresser upstairs on the landing, 60 years... | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
It's 60 years old. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
-Go and have a look. -Go and have a look. -On the stairs. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
SHE LAUGHS | 0:07:21 | 0:07:22
-There. -Oh, that's... | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
-That one there. -I tell you what - we'll have that. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
It might be a lovely little upcycle job. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:30
We might rub that down and give it a lick of paint. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
One lot for me to put under the hammer, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
and a lovely little upcycling project. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
We've hit the jackpot. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
Get the weights. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:40
Izzie has certainly got catching up to do. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
I don't... Cat basket. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
I have only got one cat, so... | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
-So you don't need... -I don't need all of them. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
There's some nice handbags here. Cuddly toy. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
-You've got to always have a cuddly toy. -Yes. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
Just little bits and pieces, that's all I could find on short notice. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
-No, that's brilliant. -I have also got some men's weights | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
-down in the workshop. -Perfect. Thank you very, very much. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
It is a good little lot of bric-a-brac | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
that'll make us £10 or £15, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
and it puts Izzie back in the running. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
If everyone plays nicely, that is. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
Danny, what are you doing here? | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
Hello. We're just... | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Somebody said that you've got a lot of stuff | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
to take out from here, so... | 0:08:16 | 0:08:17
But, Danny, this is my house, | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
so you can't go stealing any of these things. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
-Are you sure? -Certainly. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
I reckon between us we'll manage... | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
If it's a case of that, we'll sort something out. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
-You'll be all right? -Yes. -OK, I'll... -Buzz off, Danny. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
Right, I've been told. Au revoir. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
Keep your nose out, Danny. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
Thank you. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:36
Doing my weights for the day. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
True to her word, Cherry does have weights to donate... | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
That's fine, I can put some more on. Pile me up. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
..and there was more than a couple of dusty dumbbells. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
They'll give our fundraising some muscle. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
Good job done. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:54
Cherry has been so generous. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
She's given us her entire weights collection, | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
and there are loads of them. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
They must have cost her an absolute fortune. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
Yep, pumping this much iron doesn't come cheap. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
Brand-new dumbbells go for anything from £10 to £40. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:13
But what's really taken my fancy is this artist's easel. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
It's got a little bit of age to it. I mean, I would have thought it | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
sort of within the last half of the century. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
It's got the paint on it, so it's had some use. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
What's nice as well is it's still all intact. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Functional and decorative, this ticks all the boxes, | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
and it's not just artists that'll be drawn to it. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
These days, plenty of people are using easels | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
to display paintings at home. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
This could be for the saleroom. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
Oh, it's nice and cool in here. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
And it looks like Danny's in luck too. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
He's popped in on Vinette's friend, Joan. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
-Is that all right? -Oh, that's a lovely bit of glass. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
This is a beautiful bit of studio glass. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
Very decorative. A lot of depth. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
There's nice colours - there's blues, there's greens, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
there's greys. Very expensive. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
-Is it? -Yeah. I would imagine so, yes. It looks like... | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
Can I change my mind, then? You can have something else. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
I'll give something else. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:07
Keep it for auction day, Danny. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
It's lovely, that is. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
This may not be Tiffany or Galle, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:12
but good-looking studio glass like this is always a crowd pleaser. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
Just goes to show that Vinette's friends | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
are ready to dig deep for her. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
Well, I've known Vinette since she was 15 years old. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
Her heart lies within helping people, | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
and she'll go out of her way to help anybody. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
Why do you think she does so much? Why does she do these...? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
Sometimes I say to her, you know, I said, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
"Come on, Vinette, you have got to, you have got to..." | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
-Slow down. -"..slow down, because at the end of the day, you know, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
"you've only got one body and one life. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
"You have got to slow down." | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
She's gone off and helped somebody, doing something for somebody else. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
Sounds like she's one of a kind. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
I think, when Vinette was born, they broke the mould. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
THEY LAUGH | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
Everyone who knows Vinette loves her, | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
and when you discover just how much she does for people around here, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
it's not hard to see why. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
After nine years of marriage, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
no-one appreciates her more than her husband | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
and fellow care worker, Hugo. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Part of her nature, she genuinely gets a buzz and pleasure | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
from helping other people. She is always going the extra mile. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
Vinette's constantly on hand to help anyone with needs, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
in whatever way she can. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
But she's always had a particular interest | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
in looking after older people. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
I grew up being around a lot of elderly people, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:36
and people in the community. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
Some of them were family, some of them were like family. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
And she would always be helping them. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
And as Vinette's friend, Blanche, explains, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
Vinette's still providing that help through her job. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
She's always in people's homes, helping other people. Yeah. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
Especially those over 50. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
Sometimes she spends hours with them, | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
especially if they're on their own. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
She'll sit and chat, she'll cook, she'll wash, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
she'll take them different places, yes. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
But her urge to care for others | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
doesn't switch off when she leaves the office. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
She's always on the phone as well, phoning people up, | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
so she gives a lot of support that way. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
Probably in the evening, | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
she sometimes makes two or three or more phone calls, | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
people she knows, just seeing how they are. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
So that kind of thing is important, especially to more elderly people. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
Everyone in her neighbourhood benefits from her great kindness, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
and she's carved a particular niche | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
as the go-to person for members of the Afro-Caribbean community. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:36
I mean, in the community, we have a lot of people who are on their own. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
So she does take that responsibility, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
especially those who may need statutory benefits, | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
and is not aware of it. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
Vinette will go in and give the information, because she's well... | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
She has a good understanding of what's going on. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
Another cause close to her heart | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
is that of black and ethnic minority carers. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
She's part of Ebony Carers, which is a community group | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
that kind of provides respite care for carers, | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
helping someone when they needed a bath or something, a shower, | 0:13:07 | 0:13:12
they'd much rather someone from their cultural background, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
because they'll understand their cultural needs more. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
Vinette's tireless devotion to helping anyone who needs it | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
would be impressive enough in itself, | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
but what makes her particularly heroic | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
is that she does all of this whilst suffering almost constant pain | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
caused by fibromyalgia. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
Somebody can just nudge me, you know, playfully, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
and it's like, "Ouch!" | 0:13:36 | 0:13:37
I'll feel it, not just for days, | 0:13:37 | 0:13:39
maybe a week I'll feel that pain, still. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
They do say, you know, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
people with fibromyalgia can have a certain level of depression. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
It definitely, yeah, gets her down. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
But she just soldiers on. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
And back in Vinette's neighbourhood, | 0:13:54 | 0:13:56
it's clear the community love her for it. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
-Thank you. Bye-bye. -Bye-bye. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
Donations are still coming our way. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
Perfect to just pop on the bric-a-brac stall. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
Every little helps. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:08
Well, mostly Izzie's way, actually. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:10
We've got loads of really good bits here. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
We've got some toys, which always go down well with the kids. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
We've also got here... very nice Royal Doulton, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:21
almost like a rose bowl or a potpourri bowl, really. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
It's cut glass crystal, | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
which is a much more highly skilled way of cutting your glass, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
and the edges are much sharper, it's much cleaner, | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
it's just much better quality all-round. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
Royal Doulton may be more famous for porcelain, | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
but its glassware is a perennial favourite. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
This is obviously modern, | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
but I still think it could spark enough interest | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
to pull in £20 on the pop-up rostrum. Nice find, Izzie. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:48
No interesting collectables in Danny's sights at the moment, | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
but he has bumped into someone special... | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
Do you want a hand? | 0:14:54 | 0:14:55
You look like your hands are full. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
..the person this is all for. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
My name's Danny. What's your name? | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
-Vinette. -Vinette. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:03
-What do you do? -I do lots of things. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
-I work for the Independence Trust. -What's the Independence Trust? | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
-Supporting... -Yeah, yeah, yeah. -..people with mental health issues. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
And then in the afternoon, I was a community agent, | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
community and village agent for Gloucester Rural Community Council. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
Do you help people, if somebody's, like, can't walk or something, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
you push the wheelchair or...? | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
We do that as well. If needs be. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:25
That's under my voluntary cap, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
which is another cap again. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
Sounds like you're getting 28 hours out of 24. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
Yeah, everybody says that to me. "How do you fit it all in?" | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
She's an incredible woman, | 0:15:37 | 0:15:39
and we'll need to work at least as hard as she does | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
if we're going to make the £500 we need to send her on holiday. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:47
-Ay up! -DOGS BARK | 0:15:47 | 0:15:48
Their bark really is worse than their bite. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
-How are you? -I'm all right. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:52
I have got four nice bar stools. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
Oh, let's have a look. Get them out. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
Let's have a look. | 0:15:57 | 0:15:58
That's one. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:00
There's easily £20 here, I think, | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
because this kind of retro look is really popular. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
-Now, that's a good start. -Yeah. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
Oh, that's nice. Oh, they look like... | 0:16:11 | 0:16:13
-something to do with testing your eyes, probably. -Yeah, yeah. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
Now, there's a sight for sore eyes. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
-These are quite interesting, aren't they? -Yeah, yeah. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
Whether that's... for, like, salt and pepper... | 0:16:23 | 0:16:27
That's a little spoon. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:28
I just adore the intricate Rococo decoration | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
on this lovely little condiment set. Quite a find. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
These two plates look very oriental. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
When I rub my fingers along the top of the plate, | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
the paint's raised above the actual ceramic - | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
tells me straight away these are hand-painted. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:49
Very nice. Anything oriental is on fire. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
Beautiful. And in good nick. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
I could certainly see this pair setting the auction alight. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
In fact, all in all, Danny's man with the van has done us proud. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
I tell you what, I fell on my feet here. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
-Ay up. -Hello, hello. -Get away, you. Get away. -What you got here? | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
In fact, it's a good job you've come over. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
Come and have a look. What you think of them? | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
-Is it silver? -It's not, it's not hallmarked, is it? | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
-White metal's very broad, though, isn't it? -I can't see any markings. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
So it's probably a low grade of silver, like, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:17
I wouldn't have thought any more than 800. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
-What is the Sterling grade? 925? -Mm. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
I was thinking it was continental. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
Yeah. But they're the same. Continental's 800 as well, | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
-as a general rule. -Right. You're educating me here. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:32
No way! Am I, Danny? | 0:17:32 | 0:17:33
Just a little bit, just a little bit. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
Never too old to learn new tricks, eh, Danny? | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
Hello. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:41
But now, with just minutes to go before they throw in the towel | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
on their rummage day... | 0:17:44 | 0:17:45
That's what we like. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
..Danny and Izzie need to get busy. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
Oh! Lovely handbag. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Hello, you. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
Is there somebody home? | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
That's quite nice. German pottery. | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
Very, very in vogue between the 1950s to the 1970s. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
It's all coming to now, and it's all adding up. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
I don't really know where to start. There's so much in here. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
-Thanks very much. -Bye. -Bye-bye. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
On the front here, there is some lovely Swarovski crystals. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
They're really going to take the fancy of somebody. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
We have a mantle clock here. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
Although it doesn't look it, it is a battery-powered clock. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
And it is raised on four scroll feet here, | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
emulating an older style. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
Time's up. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32
What a great way to end the day. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
All that's left to do is unload the van, | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
see who's collected the most, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
and find some items to send over to the saleroom. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
Danny, Danny, Danny. How's your day been? | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
Oh, brilliant. Well, you can see. It really has been brilliant. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
But you've not done so bad yourself. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
What's your favourite piece here? | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
-Oh, that's a difficult one. -Is that a clock? | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
Yes, but it is only battery, battery clock. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
Oh, but it looks old, doesn't it? | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
Yes, I think it's in an old style. I think it has got some age, | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
but I don't think it's as old as it's purporting to be. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
Is this some Doulton you've got going on down here? | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
The vase, the potpourri vase is Royal Doulton, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
-Royal Doulton Crystal. -Oh, is it? -And it comes in its box as well. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
It seems to me like I might have a bit of trouble keeping up with you. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
-No. -You might have, um... | 0:19:17 | 0:19:18
Don't get my hopes up, Danny. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
Well, don't get them fully up, but... | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
Look at them dolls. All these porcelain dolls. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
-Yeah. -I've got loads of them. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:26
We'd be able to make a stall with all porcelain dolls. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
Then, of course, Izzie, there's a bit of quality here, you know. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
-Look at them four chairs. -You know, I like those. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
-I do like those. -I should think you do. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
I should think you do. I think I've done quite well, but... | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
-You have got some nice pieces. Yes. -I have, haven't I? | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
But you haven't got as much as me. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
No, you... Well, you've got some nice pieces, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
-and you have also got... -Quantity. -..quantity to go alongside with it. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:52
Have you got a star item? | 0:19:52 | 0:19:53
-I do. -Let's have a look. -Shall I walk you to it? | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
Well, I don't know, where... Oh, here! | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
# Ta-da! # | 0:19:58 | 0:19:59
OK, so, it's actually the easel. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
Oh, I was going to say, I didn't think it was going to be | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
-that bit of art. -Don't be rude about my art! | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
Oh, it's a nice one. It's an old vintage one, isn't it? | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
Yes, so I didn't think there was... | 0:20:10 | 0:20:11
I mean, I think there's some age to it, | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
but I didn't think it was, like, 100 years old. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
-No, it's... -But it's nice. -Yeah, and it's practical. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:17
-Exactly. -Wait till you see my bit of cream. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
Voila. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:21
Danny, that is really nice! | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
Isn't it just? | 0:20:24 | 0:20:25
I think it's quite a modern piece of just studio art, isn't it? | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
-Yes. -Glass, really. -I would agree. I don't know this... | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
-Maker's mark. -No. No issue. -Doesn't have a label. -No. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
I mean, normally with studio glass, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:35
you are looking for the signature on the bottom. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
Which... But it's nice, I like it. It's got the look, certainly. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
I've got a feeling that that might do exceptionally well | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
-on Paul's pop-up auction. -Well, I like it and you like it. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
So no doubt, so will a lot more people. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
Great work, Team Rummage. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
So what's going to the saleroom? | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
I think, from my side of things, the easel, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
-I'd like to send the easel to the saleroom. -Good shout. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
And I would like to send the oriental plates | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
-and also the continental silver. -Definitely. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
Nice one. And I spot a couple of pieces ripe for upcycling. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:08
I was thinking the white corner unit. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
And I would like to send the display unit. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
I like it, but it is quite tired. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
Well, that's the whole reason we're going to be upcycling it, Izzie. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
Well done, you two. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:21
But who's today's winner? | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
So, tell me, Izzie, where do you value the whole lot at, then? | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
I'm going to say, I think about 200 minimum. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
Well, do you know what, Izzie? I'm going to put my hand there | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
-and I'm going to say, you've won this one. -I.. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
-Danny! -You've won this one. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
Well, I've come out on top today, Danny, with more stuff, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
but it's down to you and Paul at the street party. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
You can rest assured, come rain or shine, we're going to do our best, | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
and I'm sure on the day, our best is going to be good enough. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:50
Danny and Izzie have done well, | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
but is it enough to push us towards our £500 target? | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
Hard to say. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
Now it's all down to our auction day. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
Getting this up and running is a massive task, | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
and I couldn't possibly do it all by myself. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
Good. Let's get on with it. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
So Danny and Izzie are taking turns to help out on our auction day, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
and today Danny's come onboard. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
Thanks very much for coming. Put that one on. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
That one's ready-made. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
And he's not the only one - | 0:22:24 | 0:22:25
an impressive number of volunteers | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
have made the effort to come out and help too. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:30
Morning, everyone. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
Our volunteers, thank you so much for turning up. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
Have you all got nametags yet? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:38
I see you've met Danny. He's been busy already. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
Look, thank you so much, this is so important to us, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
because we cannot do this by ourselves, | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
and our target today is to raise as much money as possible. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
Would you like to do teas, coffees and cakes? | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
-Yeah. -Could you do that? Anybody else want to be on teas, | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
-coffees and cakes? -Yeah. -Brilliant. What's your name? -Matt. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
Matt, thank you for helping out. You've got your work cut out. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
Riley and Kayleigh, can you go on some bric-a-brac and sell that? | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
-Yeah. -Lots of money is going to be changing hands. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
Are you good with sums? | 0:23:05 | 0:23:06
-Yes. -Yeah, OK. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
So three... Take away, let's say, three from 11. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
-Nine. -Nine. It's not quite, is it? | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
-What is it? -Eight. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:16
Three from 11 is... | 0:23:16 | 0:23:17
-Eight. -Eight, well done. High-five. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
There we are. So, can we do this? | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
-ALL: -Yeah! -So give us a high-five. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
-ALL: -Yes! | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
Stations, everyone, and good luck. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
While our little army of volunteers get everything shipshape, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
I want to get a closer look at Danny and Izzie's rummage day spoils. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:37
There's lots of things here. Something for everybody. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
Lots of art. Plenty of art. Lots of bric-a-brac. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
I think we've got one or two prize pieces. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
-Did Izzie find these? -I found these. -You found those? | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
If we get 20- £30 for that lot, that is a fantastic result. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:53
-I think you're right. -That's a good find. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
Ooh, look at that. You obviously visited an optometrist's house. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:59
Is that what they call them? | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
Someone that measures eyesight, checks your eyesight. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
-How about that? -They don't look bad. -Who said that? | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
We might get a fiver for those. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:09
Interesting stuff there. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:12
I'm looking forward to the pop-up auction already. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
Quick, quick! | 0:24:17 | 0:24:18
I'll just drop that on there. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
We are awesome. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
And now the rostrum's up, the stalls are looking good, | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
the entertainers are ready, it's now or never. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:33
So, let's get this party started | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
with a five, four, three, two, one... | 0:24:36 | 0:24:39
-Good luck. -Good luck. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:40
CHEERING | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
Grab and pay. Grab and pay. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
This is real community spirit in action. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
Everyone's getting together for one extra-special person. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
-They're yours, sweetheart. -Thank you. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:03
Thank you very much. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:04
It's heart-warming stuff. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:06
The refreshments are flowing... | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
-It's going to get busier than this, you know. -I know. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
-We may need a hand later. -You may... -Yeah. We need volunteers. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
Everyone's having fun. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:19
Come on, chuck some change in here now, ladies. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:21
Don't be shy. Come on. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
Do you want to chuck that phone in? | 0:25:23 | 0:25:24
THEY LAUGH | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
And we've hit on an unlikely money-spinner. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
I've just checked this stall out. I didn't see this earlier, | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
-but what's the most popular badge? -That one. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
This is the most popular badge. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:35
HE LAUGHS | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
How much are you charging for a Street Auction badge? | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
-25p. -25p. -Brilliant! | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
There's Danny, look! 25p. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
Now we know where the smart money's at. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:46
To be honest, the only face I want to see at the moment is Vinette's. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
Worryingly, there's no sign of her. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
But her daughter, Charlotte, and her granddaughter, Jasmine, | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
have just arrived. | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
So what sort of person is your mum? Tell me a bit about her. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:03
My mum is very caring, very humble, | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
and loves to help everyone. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:08
Even if she's only just met you, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
she would love to see what she can do to help you out. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:14
You know, even if that means putting herself to last, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
and that's what she does quite often. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
I know, you know, she was so busy helping someone else out | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
this morning, so I'm very excited today. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
Something for her, for once. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
Yeah. Yeah. A big pat on the back. Everybody saying a big thank you. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
When did all this start, all this volunteering and helping people out? | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
-How many years ago? -It started when I was very young. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
You know, sometimes someone might just want someone to speak to, | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
the elderly, and she'd make them a cup of tea. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
Sometimes she's helping people to paint, decorate, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
teaching older people computer skills... | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
-She's brilliant, isn't she? -Yeah. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:51
She literally does everything. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
You've got some big footsteps to follow, haven't you? | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
Yeah! How do you think Granny's going to react to this? | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
I think she's going to be really surprised. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
-Yeah. -She's going to look very shocked. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
She might even cry. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
Do you know what? Actually, we might end up crying for her. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:09
-I bet you will. Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
Oh, there's no doubt that Vinette's a really special person. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
I just hope she shows up. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
Look at the condition of that record. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
How much are the records? | 0:27:18 | 0:27:20
Oh, we'll do them for £2 each, something like that. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
-This one's definitely good - Motorhead. -Oh, I didn't... | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
Ooh, that should have been more than that! What do you mean...? | 0:27:24 | 0:27:27
Oh, no, it's £2 now. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:28
We do seem to be pulling in the cash here today, | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
but it's impossible to tell whether it'll be enough. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
I tell you what, it's hard work. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:34
But we're getting there, slowly but surely. We're getting there. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:38
To maximise our money, | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
we sent three of the best rummage day items off to a saleroom. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
Charlotte and her friend, Shehnai, went along to see how they fared. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:50
The man with the gavel is Gavin Aplin. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
Thank you very much. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:55
First, Izzie's star buy, the beautiful beech easel. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
Auctioneer's estimate, £20 to £30. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
Who wants to start me at £10 on this? 20, there you go. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
The internet's come in. 22, sir. 22, thank you, sir. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
Where's my four coming from? Four. And six, sir? | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
No. At £24 on my screen, show me six if you like. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
At £24. Are we done? With fair warning, sir. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
That's a bargain for the buyer, and not a bad start for us. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
Next up, my favourites, the pair of Chinese plates. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:29
Again, the estimate's £20 to £30. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
Start me, £30, on these. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
20 and away, then, if you like, please. At £20. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:37
Come on. They're worth that all day long. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:40
Bid me 10 then, if you will, £10 asking. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
-Surely £10. £10 on the internet. -Oh, yes, lovely. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
Where's my £12 coming from, please? Do I see £12 anywhere? | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
At 10, then, and selling... | 0:28:48 | 0:28:50
To the internet, £10. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:53
Oh, dear. I didn't expect them to fall flat. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
Let's hope our silver condiment set can spice things up. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
Estimate, £30 to £50. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
20, if you like, then, please. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:04
At 20, I have got, where's my two coming from, please? | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
At 20, show me two. | 0:29:06 | 0:29:08
At 22, 24, come back now if you would, at 24, and six asking. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:11
At 24, show me six. | 0:29:11 | 0:29:12
Now eight, please. At 26, looking for eight, anywhere, please. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
At 28, got now, 30. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:16
Come back. £28 then... | 0:29:16 | 0:29:18
Lovely. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:22
Just shy of the estimate, | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25
but our saleroom total is a respectable £62. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
Takes the pressure off the sticker sales a bit. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:31
-Thank you very much, sir. -Come on, keep it coming! | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
Thank you very much. Thank you. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:35
But the best news is that Vinette and husband Hugo are here. | 0:29:35 | 0:29:39
I finally get to meet her. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
Here she is now, carrying the cakes. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
I hope I don't blow it. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:46
Cakes! Brilliant. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:47
Fantastic. What is that one? | 0:29:47 | 0:29:49
-Chocolat. -Chocolat. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:51
-And that? -That one is carrot, as you can see... | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
Can I auction this one off on the rostrum? | 0:29:53 | 0:29:55
I think I could get maybe £20 or £30. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:57
Yeah, if that's what you want to do. | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
Licking his fingers. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:01
Can we put that one in the shade over there? | 0:30:01 | 0:30:03
-That's my rostrum table. And what's your name? -Vinette. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:05
-Vinette. -Yeah. -Come over here, my darling, | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
and put them, put them down here. Shall I carry it for you? | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
No, no, no. No, I don't want to drop... | 0:30:10 | 0:30:11
The cake has arrived. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
-Yay! -Chocolate cake! | 0:30:13 | 0:30:15
That's the best, isn't it? | 0:30:15 | 0:30:17
Not only do you bake cakes and decorate them, then, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
you work here in the community? | 0:30:20 | 0:30:21
What do you do for your job? | 0:30:21 | 0:30:23
Well, I'm a community and village agent. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:25
What does that mean? What do you do? | 0:30:25 | 0:30:27
-Yes, I... -A village agent. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
Yes, I am an agent, 007. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:32
I actually go round, anything in terms of adult social care... | 0:30:32 | 0:30:36
-Yeah. -..I'm the first point of contact, | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38
but sometimes people are just lonely. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:40
-Yeah. -But I am not just that, you know, I'm...a volunteer and... | 0:30:40 | 0:30:46
Cake maker. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:47
Cake maker and florist, I teach as well in the community. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:51
The last course that I did was a flower arranging one. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:54
-I paint properties as well. -Do you really? -Yeah. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:57
-Gosh, you don't stop, then? -No, I don't. -Constantly on the go. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:00
Thursday, I went to Stroud, | 0:31:00 | 0:31:01
cos a lady phoned me, "Vinette, Vinette, I need help." | 0:31:01 | 0:31:06
So she had a lot of rubbish outside her house | 0:31:06 | 0:31:08
and she was supposed to pay 250 quid for this rubbish. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:11
I said, "You're not paying that. You're not paying that." | 0:31:11 | 0:31:14
-She was being ripped off, was she? -Yeah. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:15
These are older people, vulnerable, on their own. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
I said, "Hang on there, I'm coming." | 0:31:18 | 0:31:20
I grab all my bits from the shed... | 0:31:20 | 0:31:22
So you are constantly on the go. Are you shooting off? | 0:31:22 | 0:31:24
I know you're really, really busy. | 0:31:24 | 0:31:26
Are you here for the rest of the day? | 0:31:26 | 0:31:27
-I am here for the rest of the day. -Oh, thank goodness for that. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:29
-I'm staying now. -Brilliant. I'll catch up with you later. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
What a lovely woman. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:33
Friendly, funny, but most of all, very, very kind and caring. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:38
I just cant wait to spring our surprise on her. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:41
I tell you what, I definitely think we got away with that. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
She hasn't got a clue all of this is for her. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:47
But if we don't make the money we need for Vinette and Hugo's break, | 0:31:49 | 0:31:53
there will be no surprise to spring. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:55
Cheers. Thank you. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
So I'm really hoping our upcycled furniture can pump up our profits, | 0:31:57 | 0:32:01
starting with Izzie's bashed-about corner unit. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:06
It was quite grubby, to be honest. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:07
And we've cleaned it up and we've jazzed it up | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
with some stickers and... | 0:32:10 | 0:32:11
I think it would be quite nice in a kid's bedroom. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
-Like a little corner shelving unit? -Exactly. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:15
I don't know about you, but I think £3 to £5 for that. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
-I think it's fair. -Yeah, that will be fair. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
-I mean, if it gets more than that, it's brilliant. -Yes. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
OK, but that's a good sort of starting point. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
Danny spotted the upcycle potential | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
in the sturdy but old-fashioned cabinet. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:29
-It was real dark, you know. -Yeah. -Your traditional brown furniture. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:33
Whereas now it's got a nice eggshell blue on it. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:35
It's been painted. We've got some nice wallpaper inside. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:39
Stripy wallpaper, stripy shirt. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:41
Was this your choice? | 0:32:41 | 0:32:42
I like this. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:46
But because the glass is cracked, it may deter people. | 0:32:46 | 0:32:49
£8 to £12 on that. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:51
-Fair price. -Yeah, it's a fair price. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
It's also three to four times more than we could have hoped to make | 0:32:53 | 0:32:57
if we'd left them in their original state. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
Nice work, Danny. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:01
But with little or no time left | 0:33:01 | 0:33:03
before our stalls shut shop for the day, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:06
we've got to sell, sell, sell. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:08
Come on, don't be shy. Anything you want now 50p. | 0:33:08 | 0:33:11
Be quick, now. Be quick. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:13
Oh, look at this. People are throwing money at us. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:16
Thank you. Keep spending, spending, spending. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:21
Let's clear up these last few plants before they're all gone. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
That's what we like. Look - all the dolls are flying out now. 50p. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:28
I'm going to have my cabinet back, you painted it white. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
-Do you like it? -I'm pleased with that. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:32
I'll get my trolley and go and pick it up now. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
-Oh... -Pick it back up. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
Ladies and gentlemen, the stalls are now officially closed. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:41
The team are totting up the pounds and pence... | 0:33:41 | 0:33:43
..the entertainers are keeping the crowd happy, | 0:33:46 | 0:33:49
and I think our secret's still safe. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
But I'm feeling nervous. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:53
I want to grab a last-minute chat with Vinette's husband, Hugo. | 0:33:53 | 0:33:57
I've heard lots of wonderful stories about her. | 0:33:57 | 0:33:59
She is possibly the kindest person in the world. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
Yeah, yeah. In my book, she is, | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03
but in other people's books, definitely, yeah. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
How do you think she's going to react today, | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
when she finds out all of this is for her? | 0:34:09 | 0:34:12
She'll probably get quite emotional. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:17
I think it'll be a lovely surprise for her, | 0:34:17 | 0:34:19
cos it's not about, you know, the awards or accolades. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:22
-No. -It's nice for her to get some recognition. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:26
Oh, well, you know, we know, | 0:34:26 | 0:34:28
after listening to so many stories from people here in this community, | 0:34:28 | 0:34:33
that we're doing it for the right reasons and the right person. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:37
But if we haven't made good money today, | 0:34:37 | 0:34:39
our plans to send Vinette off on holiday will go up in smoke. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
And now it's the nerve-racking moment of truth. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
So we've got a final tally of what was taken at the stalls today. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:51
What is it, Danny? | 0:34:51 | 0:34:52
£357. | 0:34:52 | 0:34:54 | |
-Not bad. -I don't think that's bad. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:56
-Not bad at all, really. -Yes. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:58
Don't forget, we sent some things off to auction. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:00
-Oh, yes. -And we made a grand total of £62. -Oh, very well done. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:04
Add that on, that's £419. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
-It's close. -It's very close. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:09
-It is close. -And it's been hard work. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:10
But I think it's still doable. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
OK, put it there. Let's do it. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:15
To reach our £500 goal, | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
I've got to rattle up at least £81 with the gavel. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:21
I think I can do it. I hope I can. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:23
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for digging deep. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:29
We have a target to raise, and we haven't reached it yet, | 0:35:29 | 0:35:32
so I'm now relying on you to get your hand in your pocket once more. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:36
If they don't, we're in all kinds of trouble. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
Here goes with Danny's star find, the beautiful studio glass. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:42
What's it worth, Danny? | 0:35:42 | 0:35:43
It has got to be worth £20, £25 of anybody's money. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:46
Right, you've heard it from the man. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:47
Who's going to start me off with a bid of £5? | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
Five. Thank you. Five, ten. | 0:35:50 | 0:35:51
15? 20. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:53
Can I take 20? I'm selling at 20. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:55
-Fair warning... -Hold on. 25. -25. Thank you. | 0:35:55 | 0:35:58
£25. | 0:35:58 | 0:35:59 | |
-Still cheap. -Going once, twice... | 0:35:59 | 0:36:01
Sold. £25. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
Well done. Very well done. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:05
It's an encouraging start. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:06
I'm hoping Izzie's Royal Doulton bowl can match it. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:09
Surely it's worth five. Thank you. I'm looking for six now. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:12
Six anywhere? Six, and I'm selling at five. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
This is worth far more than that! | 0:36:15 | 0:36:16
Come on, Gloucester! | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
Late legs. £6. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:19
Seven. Eight. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:20
£9. One more bid. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:21
Nine. Ten. Thank you at the back, sir. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:23
£11. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:25 | |
Sir, one more? 12. | 0:36:25 | 0:36:27
13. 14. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:29
15. 16? £16. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:31
-It's against you now. -£17. -£17. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:35
18. He's come up with 18. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37

Sold, £20. | 0:36:40 | 0:36:42
Brilliant. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
A slow start, but a sparkling finish. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:46
And, with the decanter and glasses doing well... | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
And I am selling at 15. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:50
It's going once, it's going twice... | 0:36:50 | 0:36:53
Sold, £15. Thank you. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:56
..the weights pushing us that little bit further. | 0:36:56 | 0:36:59
And I'm selling at £8. Going once, twice... | 0:36:59 | 0:37:01
Sold to the gentleman at the back. Thank you. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:03
..and our upcycled cabinet making a none-too-shabby price... | 0:37:03 | 0:37:07
And I will sell at five. | 0:37:07 | 0:37:08
Fair warning. Sold, £5. Thank you very much, sir. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:12
..we're steadily edging closer to our target. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
The revamped corner unit's next. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:17
I'm hoping for another £5 here. | 0:37:17 | 0:37:19
Do I see three anywhere? | 0:37:19 | 0:37:21
I'm, looking for three and I am selling at two. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
Oh, thank you, late legs. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:25
£3. It's against you, madam. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:26
Four. Five, thank you. Strong bidding. Six. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
Seven, seven, seven? | 0:37:29 | 0:37:30
One more. Eight, eight. | 0:37:30 | 0:37:32
Make it a tenner, I'll put the hammer down. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:34
Thank you. £10. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:36
It's going once... Strong bidding, Strong bidding. | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39

-It's sold. -Well done. -Yes. | 0:37:44 | 0:37:46
So we've made a total of £16 on our upcycling. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:50
Good fun to do and a great return | 0:37:50 | 0:37:51
on a few pounds' worth of paint and sticky vinyl. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:55
I'm smiling now. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:56
Look at that. That's got to be made by a professional, | 0:37:56 | 0:37:59
and I bet it tastes fantastic. | 0:37:59 | 0:38:01
Vinette's monster carrot cake, easily worth £10. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:05

Yeah. A big round of applause. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
A tasty price for Vinette's baking efforts. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:29
Here's hoping our final lot will be the cherry on the top. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:33
Four bar stools. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:35
I just love these. But will anyone else love them enough to pay £20? | 0:38:35 | 0:38:39
Any further advances on £10? | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41

Can I take 31? | 0:38:50 | 0:38:51
32? Shrug of the head. A roll of the eyes. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:55
Still cheap, these. There's four of them, don't forget. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:57
I knew they had pulling power. Great stuff! | 0:38:57 | 0:39:00
40, now. £40. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
Fantastic bid. That's a strong bid. | 0:39:03 | 0:39:05

An absolute thriller to finish with. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:13
Time to do our sums and see if we've made the grade. | 0:39:13 | 0:39:17
Fingers crossed. | 0:39:17 | 0:39:18
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for being so patient. | 0:39:18 | 0:39:22
We've had a fantastic street party, | 0:39:22 | 0:39:24
you've spent your money here at the auction. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:26
I can now add those totals together. | 0:39:26 | 0:39:28
We had a target of £500 we had to raise today. | 0:39:28 | 0:39:33
We didn't get that target. | 0:39:33 | 0:39:36
We made £637! | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
We smashed it! | 0:39:38 | 0:39:40
That's what I call people power! | 0:39:40 | 0:39:42
People coming together, and together we can move mountains. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:47
That's what it's all about. | 0:39:47 | 0:39:48
A big, big thank you. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:50
I can now reveal what this is all about. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
We've had to get someone here today on false pretences. | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
They haven't got a clue - all of this is for them. | 0:39:56 | 0:40:00
Many of you know this person. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
She's a big, big part of this community. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
She's there to help every single one of you. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:08
She goes above and beyond the call of duty. | 0:40:08 | 0:40:13
She doesn't want any kind of rewards. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:15
She does this, she volunteers because she loves what she does. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:20
Despite her own setbacks, she ploughs on through. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:26
This person is not far from me, and her name... | 0:40:26 | 0:40:30
..is Vinette Poyser. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:34
CHEERING | 0:40:34 | 0:40:36

How do you feel? | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
Vinette is not as loud as I am, but I just want to say, | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
everybody has turned up to say a massive, great big thank you. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:54
Vinette Poyser, you are a real champion. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:56

your friends and family would like to say thank you | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
for all you've done, all you do. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
The money raised will go towards a break for you and Hugo, | 0:41:06 | 0:41:11
and because you are interested in film-making, | 0:41:11 | 0:41:14
we have arranged for a VIP tour around BBC Bristol. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:18
CHEERING How about that? | 0:41:18 | 0:41:21

You deserve this, you know that. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:33
-You are a real champion. -Thank you. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:35
I'm speechless. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:36
I am humbled. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:40
And I'm also honoured to receive this surprise. | 0:41:40 | 0:41:45
I don't know what to say, cos I just naturally do what I do. | 0:41:45 | 0:41:49
I don't look for anything. | 0:41:49 | 0:41:50
You know, it's not about fortune, you know, I just do from my heart, | 0:41:50 | 0:41:55
I give from my heart. I give my time, my support, | 0:41:55 | 0:41:58
whatever that may look like. | 0:41:58 | 0:42:00
So thank you so much. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
Well done. Well done. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:04
She doesn't do it for, you know, recognition, | 0:42:08 | 0:42:11
but it is nice to get that, you know, something like this. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:14
-That look then said it all, didn't it? -I think it did, yeah. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:17
It's helping others that she does, | 0:42:17 | 0:42:20
that makes her unique, so we're very pleased to have her here. | 0:42:20 | 0:42:24
Nobody better deserving than what she had today. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:27
She really deserves what she's received, yes, yeah. | 0:42:27 | 0:42:29
She deserves the world, and I hope that I can give her that one day. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:36
But, um...just to know that people are really, like, | 0:42:36 | 0:42:41
do care about her... | 0:42:41 | 0:42:42
..it's everything. Yeah. | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
Oh, gosh. | 0:42:46 | 0:42:48
That is what it's all about - | 0:42:50 | 0:42:51
Vinette surrounded by all of her family, friends and neighbours. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:55
They've all turned up to say one massive, great big thank you | 0:42:55 | 0:42:58
to a real hero here in the community. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:01
What a way to end today's show. I hope you've enjoyed it. | 0:43:01 | 0:43:05
Keep on watching, because next time we could be in your neighbourhood | 0:43:05 | 0:43:08
and this auction could be for you. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:09
Goodbye. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:10
Vinette enjoyed her tour of the television studios, | 0:43:12 | 0:43:15
and is now planning a restful break with Hugo. | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18 |
