This programme contains some strong language.

0:00:030:00:10

I'm Kirsty Wark and tonight you're joining me to watch a special

0:00:100:00:14

and unusual show at the Young Vic Theatre in London.

0:00:140:00:17

It's been created as part of a strand of programmes called

0:00:180:00:21

Performance Live,

0:00:210:00:23

which, over the next few years, will bring a spectrum of innovative

0:00:230:00:27

performances to the small screen

0:00:270:00:29

produced by some of today's most exciting artists.

0:00:290:00:32

Art holds up a mirror to the world,

0:00:330:00:36

and right now, many artists working in different

0:00:360:00:38

forms are responding to global political events.

0:00:380:00:42

In this case, the Young Vic have teamed up with Paul Mason,

0:00:420:00:45

who has written a new play about global revolution

0:00:450:00:49

based on his book Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere.

0:00:490:00:51

Now, while Paul is familiar to television

0:00:520:00:55

audiences as a journalist and commentator,

0:00:550:00:57

tonight we'll see him as a performer as he tells his

0:00:570:01:01

story of the last five tumultuous years in world history

0:01:010:01:05

through the events that he himself witnessed

0:01:050:01:08

and the people that he met.

0:01:080:01:09

From the outset, expect strong personal opinion and language

0:01:090:01:13

as well as film images that some might find upsetting.

0:01:130:01:18

Let's go inside.

0:01:180:01:19

APPLAUSE

0:01:230:01:25

Bertolt Brecht said theatre should be like a man who's seen

0:01:340:01:38

a car crash and has to explain what happened to the bystanders.

0:01:380:01:42

Now, sometimes he has to act it out, like, "The driver pulled the wheel

0:01:420:01:47

"head hit the windscreen, blood everywhere."

0:01:470:01:50

But sometimes he's got to be clinically objective,

0:01:500:01:53

like, "The Audi was approaching the junction at 30mph."

0:01:530:01:58

Well...

0:01:580:02:00

I've seen a car crash.

0:02:000:02:01

A global car crash.

0:02:020:02:04

You're in it.

0:02:040:02:05

I've reported it as a TV journalist

0:02:050:02:07

but now I want to tell the story in a different way.

0:02:070:02:10

I want to tell the story as I saw it.

0:02:110:02:14

I want to tell it as if everybody's life depended on it, including mine.

0:02:140:02:18

And what I want to ask is how did we get from a mass outbreak

0:02:190:02:23

of global protest and hope and optimism

0:02:230:02:27

to Donald Trump?

0:02:270:02:28

TITTERING

0:02:280:02:30

In 2011, all over the world, wave after wave of protest broke out

0:02:320:02:38

in place after place and this was a new kind of protest.

0:02:380:02:41

For me, it started in London in January 2011,

0:02:420:02:45

after the fall of Ben Ali in Tunisia

0:02:450:02:48

but before we had any idea what would happen next.

0:02:480:02:51

Some protesters had occupied an 18th-century townhouse

0:02:530:02:57

and they invited me to come and give them a lecture

0:02:570:02:59

about the Paris Commune,

0:02:590:03:01

because they'd organised an ad hoc university inside

0:03:010:03:04

and they called it the Really Free School.

0:03:040:03:07

This is the hard-core of the student protest movement,

0:03:080:03:12

veteran eco-warriors,

0:03:120:03:15

people who sit down in front of tanks in Gaza

0:03:150:03:18

and, as one of them put it to me, the situationist Taliban.

0:03:180:03:22

What I want you to understand is the revolution you dream about

0:03:260:03:30

has happened once before.

0:03:300:03:31

This is Paris in 1871.

0:03:330:03:35

But everything outside the blue line is new.

0:03:350:03:38

Who do we think lives there?

0:03:380:03:40

Hm? The poor.

0:03:400:03:42

The poor, the migrants and people like you, a danger to society.

0:03:420:03:48

Right, I want to tell the story through the eyes of an activist

0:03:480:03:51

called Louise Michel -

0:03:510:03:54

schoolteacher, slum-dweller, feminist,

0:03:540:03:59

cross-dresser

0:03:590:04:00

and violent revolutionary.

0:04:000:04:03

She's part of this intense network of underground activity

0:04:030:04:07

we now know existed in Paris

0:04:070:04:10

under the dictatorship of Emperor Louis-Napoleon.

0:04:100:04:13

Right, France goes to war with Germany in 1870

0:04:150:04:18

and the Emperor decides to lead the troops into battle personally.

0:04:180:04:23

This turns out to be a very bad idea

0:04:230:04:25

because he gets captured

0:04:250:04:27

and the next day France is a republic.

0:04:270:04:30

So now it's led by liberals.

0:04:300:04:32

The problem is the German Army is too strong.

0:04:340:04:38

Paris is surrounded

0:04:380:04:40

and eventually this wonderful new liberal government surrenders.

0:04:400:04:44

But...

0:04:450:04:46

..the workers of Paris don't want to surrender.

0:04:470:04:50

They build barricades,

0:04:500:04:52

they take control.

0:04:520:04:54

During the Commune...

0:05:010:05:03

hundreds of thousands of people tried to live in a new way.

0:05:030:05:08

We refused hierarchy.

0:05:110:05:13

Refused to replace one kind of power with another.

0:05:140:05:18

We lived in the streets.

0:05:190:05:23

Everybody was connected to everybody.

0:05:240:05:27

From every part of the city, we found each other,

0:05:270:05:30

we recognised each other.

0:05:300:05:33

We formed a women's union.

0:05:330:05:37

We turned the churches into revolutionary clubs.

0:05:380:05:42

We said, "Marriage is humanity's greatest crime."

0:05:420:05:45

We switched off the voice in our head, the voice of the elite,

0:05:460:05:49

telling us, "Behave, behave."

0:05:490:05:51

We fought.

0:05:510:05:53

There was a mass outbreak of promiscuity

0:05:530:05:54

because we chased away all the priests.

0:05:540:05:56

Freedom for women.

0:05:580:06:00

Freedom for children.

0:06:000:06:02

Freedom for prostitutes!

0:06:020:06:04

Do you want to know how it ends?

0:06:040:06:06

Hm?

0:06:060:06:07

It ends badly.

0:06:080:06:09

So after about two months,

0:06:120:06:14

the French army retook Paris

0:06:140:06:17

and then they killed...

0:06:170:06:18

..30,000 people in a single week.

0:06:200:06:23

Mainly civilians.

0:06:230:06:25

They understood instinctively that everything I said

0:06:290:06:33

about the Commune was really about the events that were now unfolding.

0:06:330:06:37

And I'm thinking, "Shit, that's interesting."

0:06:390:06:42

Because I grew up in a working-class town,

0:06:430:06:46

a bit like that. It's not exactly my house, but a bit like that.

0:06:460:06:51

We didn't refuse hierarchy.

0:06:510:06:52

We loved hierarchy.

0:06:520:06:54

Everything you achieved was done through organisation.

0:06:540:06:56

We wanted to replace one power with another power.

0:06:560:07:00

But I'd seen the unions fight and fail

0:07:000:07:02

and that whole working-class culture get smashed to pieces.

0:07:020:07:06

And after that, for about 20 years, there is no ghost.

0:07:080:07:13

There's no spectre of the revolution haunting the elite

0:07:130:07:16

with the possibility that it'll all happen again.

0:07:160:07:19

This...

0:07:200:07:22

This is a revolution.

0:07:230:07:25

It's a revolution of the self.

0:07:250:07:27

Young people we thought were self-obsessed,

0:07:270:07:30

you know, there brains trapped between two white earbuds,

0:07:300:07:34

they're fighting back.

0:07:340:07:36

And sure, just like the 19th and 18th-century revolutionaries,

0:07:360:07:41

the Jacobins,

0:07:410:07:42

they are young, they are poor, they are angry.

0:07:420:07:46

They live in the modern equivalent of the garret

0:07:460:07:48

and they too write appalling poetry.

0:07:480:07:50

But these are Jacobins with a laptop

0:07:520:07:56

and a smartphone.

0:07:560:07:58

And as we spoke,

0:07:580:08:00

they seemed a bit distracted.

0:08:000:08:02

And I worked out why.

0:08:020:08:04

They were tweeting the whole conversation to their friends

0:08:060:08:09

everywhere on the planet.

0:08:090:08:12

HORNS HONK

0:08:230:08:25

January the 25th 2011, protesters, mobilised via the internet,

0:08:260:08:32

take control of Tahrir Square.

0:08:320:08:34

Now, because who controls Tahrir controls Egypt,

0:08:340:08:38

Egypt's dictator Hosni Mubarak,

0:08:380:08:40

on the night of the 27th, shuts down the internet

0:08:400:08:44

and the mobile phone network.

0:08:440:08:46

And so the network takes to the streets.

0:08:480:08:51

THEY CHANT

0:08:530:08:56

If you are shouting, "Down with Hosni Mubarak," in the slums,

0:08:590:09:03

nobody really cares.

0:09:030:09:05

They care about food and shelter.

0:09:050:09:09

So we chant,

0:09:090:09:10

"How expensive is bread?

0:09:100:09:12

"How expensive is sugar?

0:09:120:09:14

"Why do you have to sell your furniture?"

0:09:140:09:16

And people joined in.

0:09:160:09:18

I thought it would be a demonstration,

0:09:200:09:22

I had no idea it would be a revolution.

0:09:220:09:26

Two men came to our slum.

0:09:260:09:28

We didn't know them.

0:09:280:09:30

They said, "Come, make a demonstration with us,

0:09:300:09:33

"with the people in Tahrir Square."

0:09:330:09:36

One was Muslim,

0:09:360:09:37

but one Christian, like me.

0:09:370:09:40

They joined their hands together, one hand.

0:09:400:09:44

You know, we went by car, ten or 20 cars,

0:09:440:09:48

and when we got there, we realised our goal was possible -

0:09:480:09:54

to make a revolution and to get freedom.

0:09:540:09:56

At first when we got to the slums, we had to walk in twos.

0:09:560:10:00

This was my first protest so I didn't know the reason,

0:10:000:10:03

but they said that, under the emergency laws,

0:10:030:10:07

more than two people together is a meeting, which is illegal.

0:10:070:10:12

Someone started chanting.

0:10:120:10:13

All of a sudden, I saw people pouring into the alleyways,

0:10:140:10:19

everybody was holding up their phone filming what was going on.

0:10:190:10:23

You know, we were about 200 people in this tiny street.

0:10:230:10:28

People came onto the balconies to see what was happening.

0:10:280:10:31

And that's when it hit me.

0:10:310:10:33

Someone who knows nothing about history,

0:10:330:10:36

nothing about freedom in Egypt and how it's been suppressed.

0:10:360:10:41

You see all these people around you chanting the same thing,

0:10:410:10:44

the same thing.

0:10:440:10:46

It triggers something in your mind.

0:10:460:10:48

I saw people running towards the police,

0:10:480:10:52

hurling bricks at them and...

0:10:520:10:54

Wow. You know, the normal scenario would be for them to run away.

0:10:560:11:00

I said, "Mother...

0:11:010:11:03

"I am not myself. I am somebody new that was born today."

0:11:030:11:08

My whole life is football.

0:11:090:11:11

I support Al Ahly.

0:11:110:11:13

You know what that means?

0:11:130:11:14

Greatest football club in the world!

0:11:140:11:17

That's our banner!

0:11:170:11:18

Anyway, some people from the club, they told us,

0:11:180:11:21

"These protesters are all traitors, foreigners, queers."

0:11:210:11:24

They said, "Go down there and do something about it."

0:11:240:11:28

But when we go to Tahrir Square, they cheered us.

0:11:280:11:31

You know, we hate the media.

0:11:310:11:33

And more than the media, we hate FIFA, and more than FIFA,

0:11:330:11:37

we hate the police.

0:11:370:11:38

And they were fighting the police before we even got there!

0:11:380:11:43

Some of them don't even go to the football!

0:11:430:11:46

We became part of them and we chanted,

0:11:460:11:50

"Ash-sha'b yurid isqat an-nizam!"

0:11:500:11:54

THEY CHANT: 'ASH-SH'B YURID ISQAT AN-NIZAM'

0:11:540:11:58

Some people actually thought it had been caused by Facebook.

0:12:260:12:31

Mubarak switched off Facebook.

0:12:340:12:36

Oh, my God! My God! Get over it.

0:12:360:12:38

LAUGHTER

0:12:380:12:39

But he still got overthrown.

0:12:390:12:41

In fact, it's about an old hierarchy facing a new,

0:12:420:12:48

young, networked generation,

0:12:480:12:51

and everywhere it's the same thing.

0:12:510:12:53

They can't stand the elite that rules them, they can't stand

0:12:530:12:57

the economic crisis and they can't stand being poor.

0:12:570:13:01

And then...

0:13:010:13:03

it happens in Libya.

0:13:030:13:04

And who knew, Libya, on the streets people would connect like this?

0:13:050:13:10

And then Syria, where it starts with small demonstrations

0:13:100:13:14

and graffiti.

0:13:140:13:15

And then Bahrain and then...

0:13:150:13:18

..Madison, Wisconsin, in the States,

0:13:200:13:22

where they take over the government building

0:13:220:13:24

and people hold up signs saying,

0:13:240:13:26

"From Madison to Cairo."

0:13:260:13:29

And then it kicks off massively in Spain.

0:13:290:13:31

In Madrid, the moment of truth came.

0:13:330:13:36

When, all of a sudden, people started walking

0:13:370:13:40

towards the police...

0:13:400:13:41

..and just sat down in front of them.

0:13:420:13:44

New ideas began to circulate like, why don't we just stay?

0:13:460:13:50

Or, look, this is what they did in Egypt.

0:13:500:13:53

Or we, too, need to occupy a square.

0:13:530:13:57

And we, the journalists in the newsroom, we're going,

0:13:570:13:59

"What kind of revolution is this?"

0:13:590:14:01

"Is it like Russia? And if it's gonna be like Russia, is it 1905

0:14:020:14:07

"when they lose, or is it 1917 when they win?"

0:14:070:14:10

June 2011 and in Athens they take over Syntagma Square,

0:14:160:14:21

right opposite the parliament.

0:14:210:14:23

And they set up a tent camp.

0:14:230:14:26

Normally, this would just be the Left, the Communist Party,

0:14:260:14:29

with its crash helmets and its banners.

0:14:290:14:31

But this time it's different. This time, it's everybody.

0:14:310:14:34

Yes, yes, yes!

0:14:340:14:36

In Athens, it's not just happening in the tent camps.

0:14:360:14:39

All over the city, ordinary people are taking over road tolls.

0:14:390:14:44

They are exerting the barriers open

0:14:440:14:47

so people can drive through for free.

0:14:470:14:49

Or they were going into the magistrates courts.

0:14:490:14:51

I went with them, I filmed them, I saw them.

0:14:510:14:55

They'd go into the magistrates courts, where people are trying

0:14:550:14:58

to sell off homes that have been repossessed,

0:14:580:15:02

and they'd just disrupt the proceedings en masse.

0:15:020:15:05

What they're doing is to make the whole city ungovernable.

0:15:050:15:09

Because this new form of organisation allows you to

0:15:090:15:12

go around the official structures, sometimes to ignore them,

0:15:120:15:16

and sometimes even to replace them.

0:15:160:15:18

At night, in the tent camp, they would hold an assembly,

0:15:280:15:33

would go quiet.

0:15:330:15:35

And to decide who gets to speak, they would use a method

0:15:350:15:39

from the Ancient Agora of Athens, 800 BC,

0:15:390:15:42

which is to draw lots.

0:15:420:15:44

Because in this kind of democracy, everybody is equal.

0:15:440:15:48

We are building a different kind of democracy.

0:15:480:15:52

A direct democracy. We don't need parliament, we don't need MPs,

0:15:520:15:56

we don't need parties.

0:15:560:15:58

Look, look what we've got.

0:15:580:16:00

In my whole life, I never saw this.

0:16:000:16:02

We are all here.

0:16:020:16:04

The networks of the people will decide everything.

0:16:040:16:08

And the anarchists, their eyes are lit up.

0:16:080:16:11

Because, for three years, they've been in the squats and the slums

0:16:110:16:13

of Athens fighting the cops, rioting, doing the anti-fascist work

0:16:130:16:17

and they've realised this thing changes the whole dynamic.

0:16:170:16:22

It's regime change of the mind.

0:16:220:16:25

In people's minds, the regime is already gone.

0:16:250:16:28

Not just the prime minister, Papandreou,

0:16:280:16:31

but the whole corrupt mainstream party system.

0:16:310:16:34

Do you have any idea what is happening to us? To us?

0:16:340:16:36

But if you ask 50 people what's going to happen next, you're going

0:16:360:16:40

0:16:400:16:42

OK, back to me, please, to me.

0:16:420:16:44

All the media, all the newspapers, all the television in Greece

0:16:440:16:47

belongs to millionaires.

0:16:470:16:49

They're all lined up with the forces, ripped off our country

0:16:490:16:52

and we feel total hostility to them.

0:16:520:16:54

Hey! Zionist media!

0:16:540:16:57

We don't want you here. OK, please, listen to me.

0:16:570:16:59

You have to let me make this point. Hey, I said, stop!

0:16:590:17:02

You have to let make this point! I am 59 years old.

0:17:020:17:05

If Greece dies, Europe dies, America dies, we all die.

0:17:050:17:08

Hey! None of us who have been here can ever go back!

0:17:080:17:11

Don't you want me to tell your story to the world?

0:17:110:17:14

No, it's too late for that.

0:17:140:17:16

What you do doesn't matter to us.

0:17:160:17:19

We will tell our story for ourselves.

0:17:190:17:23

And, in journalism, that is known as a Heart Of Darkness moment.

0:17:290:17:32

But I've still got to go on camera.

0:17:350:17:37

And in one ear, I've got the anarchists and the nationalists,

0:17:370:17:41

and in the other ear, I've got people close

0:17:410:17:43

to the German government and they are panicking.

0:17:430:17:45

Paul, this is urgent.

0:17:470:17:48

Can the Greek government hold?

0:17:480:17:51

Because honestly, Paul, if they can't,

0:17:510:17:53

then the euro is gone to hell.

0:17:530:17:55

So I turned to the camera and I said...

0:17:550:17:59

What's going on here is not just a problem for the riot police

0:17:590:18:02

and the Greek government,

0:18:020:18:03

this is the front line of the world's financial system.

0:18:030:18:06

From now on, there's a kind of rolling financial

0:18:230:18:25

and economic crisis.

0:18:250:18:27

Spain's banks go bust, Portugal is bust,

0:18:270:18:30

Ireland is bust several times over.

0:18:300:18:32

To save the banks, the European Central Bank orders

0:18:330:18:37

massive spending cuts all across the periphery of Europe.

0:18:370:18:40

The Greek economy collapses.

0:18:410:18:44

In Spain, youth unemployment rises to 25%.

0:18:440:18:48

In Greece, it rises to 50%.

0:18:490:18:53

Now, all this is being done to save the banks.

0:18:550:18:57

Effectively, to save Wall Street.

0:18:570:18:59

And so, in September 2011, people occupy Wall Street.

0:18:590:19:04

People, by now, completely at home with this new kind of protest.

0:19:040:19:07

It was heroic, really.

0:19:070:19:09

"Screw you, we're not gonna play your game of demands,

0:19:100:19:13

"we haven't got any demands."

0:19:130:19:15

Because they had understood that if you can take hold of a place

0:19:150:19:18

and occupy it and stay in it for five days, maybe ten,

0:19:180:19:22

that could be more important than taking power

0:19:220:19:26

or storming the Bastille or even winning an election, because...

0:19:260:19:31

..A, it scares the crap out of the elite,

0:19:330:19:37

and B, it creates a power inside you that never goes away.

0:19:370:19:41

HELICOPTER WHIRRS AND SIREN BLARES

0:19:420:19:45

What are you doing up there?

0:19:460:19:48

I don't have time for you, man! There's 3,000 people on the bridge

0:19:480:19:51

right now. Oh, man, come on, we got a couple of minutes, let's go!

0:19:510:19:54

Gimme the screwdriver. Let's go. Here.

0:19:540:19:56

And the blue tape. Here. The blue tape, man!

0:19:560:19:58

Oh, man, come on, come on, come on!

0:19:580:20:00

Look, they're coming. You gotta hurry up, let's go.

0:20:000:20:02

All right, all right. We gotta get this fixed.

0:20:020:20:04

Where is that guy? So...

0:20:040:20:06

Here below, you got Brooklyn Bridge, and over there,

0:20:060:20:09

you got those class A tax avoiders, Verizon.

0:20:090:20:12

Hey, it's not working, man, it's not working! Shit!

0:20:120:20:14

Listen, listen, listen.

0:20:140:20:15

I know you don't have much time and I know you don't have any

0:20:150:20:18

demands, but my editor's asked me to come here and ask you -

0:20:180:20:21

what are your demands?

0:20:210:20:23

You wanna know what our demands are? Yes.

0:20:230:20:25

Where are you from? British television.

0:20:250:20:28

All right, basically, I'll keep it simple.

0:20:280:20:30

A bunch of people shared their stories on Tumblr.

0:20:300:20:34

People read them and figured, we're all going through the same shit.

0:20:340:20:37

We're gonna occupy. What do you do? I mean, what is your job?

0:20:370:20:41

I'm a single mom, I'm a grad student and I'm unemployed.

0:20:410:20:46

You know, last year I paid more tax than General Electric.

0:20:460:20:51

Man, they bailed out the 1%, they fucked the 99%.

0:20:510:20:56

But, you know what, we're taking our future into our own hands.

0:20:560:21:00

Here we go, here we go!

0:21:000:21:01

And...

0:21:010:21:03

Boom!

0:21:030:21:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:21:040:21:06

Yeah! Yes!

0:21:070:21:09

Yes!

0:21:090:21:10

All right!

0:21:120:21:13

BOTH: Mic check!

0:21:130:21:14

AUDIENCE: Mic check!

0:21:140:21:16

Look around!

0:21:160:21:19

You are a part...

0:21:190:21:21

You are a part...

0:21:210:21:23

..of a global uprising.

0:21:230:21:25

..of a global uprising.

0:21:250:21:28

We are a cry...

0:21:280:21:30

We are a cry...

0:21:300:21:32

..from the heart... ..from the heart...

0:21:320:21:35

..of the world!

0:21:350:21:37

..of the world!

0:21:370:21:39

We are unstoppable, another world is possible!

0:21:390:21:43

Go!

0:21:430:21:45

We are unstoppable, another world is possible!

0:21:450:21:49

Again!

0:21:490:21:50

We are unstoppable, another world is possible!

0:21:500:21:55

Thing is, man, 99% -

0:21:560:22:00

this reads as the Bat symbol.

0:22:000:22:03

It's culturally legible.

0:22:030:22:05

It's a call to arms, a distress call from Gotham City.

0:22:050:22:10

But instead of a superhero millionaire psychopath

0:22:100:22:13

like Bruce Wayne, Batman coming to our rescue,

0:22:130:22:17

we've only got ourselves.

0:22:170:22:19

It's the 99% coming to save itself.

0:22:190:22:24

There is no Batman, dude!

0:22:240:22:26

The superhero's who's gonna save us...

0:22:260:22:28

..is us.

0:22:300:22:31

SIREN BLARES

0:22:310:22:33

Now, that's impressive.

0:22:330:22:34

To think it through like that, to say,

0:22:340:22:37

"I know what's happening in the history I'm living through."

0:22:370:22:40

But do you really think it's unstoppable?

0:22:420:22:44

So I'm in a riot in Athens, and, as you do in a riot in Athens,

0:23:080:23:12

I'm trying to have coffee with a contact.

0:23:120:23:15

And this is a key activist in the Syriza party,

0:23:150:23:19

that's the far-left.

0:23:190:23:21

They've been nowhere for years, but now, because of this,

0:23:210:23:24

they're doing really well in the polls.

0:23:240:23:26

Hard as nails, been in politics for years, same generation as me,

0:23:320:23:37

read all the books - Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, and she says...

0:23:370:23:41

We can't put up with austerity much longer!

0:23:410:23:43

People can't live like this.

0:23:480:23:50

We need a voice the German government will listen to,

0:23:560:23:59

someone above the political system,

0:23:590:24:01

someone like Jaques Chirac or Kirchner in Argentina.

0:24:010:24:05

A figure from the ruling class who actually understands.

0:24:050:24:09

Austerity is going to kill Europe.

0:24:090:24:12

Someone to step in, to just call a halt.

0:24:120:24:15

And I said to her, "Don't you realise it's going to be you?"

0:24:150:24:19

There was a weird moment, she looked at me.

0:24:190:24:22

I said, "Don't you realise it's going to be Syriza,

0:24:220:24:24

"it's going to be you."

0:24:240:24:26

I told my bosses, "Look, the Greek far-left is going

0:24:270:24:31

"to win an election. And with all this energy behind them,

0:24:310:24:34

"they'll take on Europe, and then, as we call it in macroeconomics,

0:24:340:24:38

"the euro will go to shit."

0:24:380:24:39

Oh, come on, Paul, it was hardly the entire population of Athens

0:24:430:24:46

on the streets, was it? And certainly not the entire

0:24:460:24:48

population of Greece. But if people are, as you say,

0:24:480:24:51

in such numbers losing faith, where does that lead?

0:24:510:24:55

My editor said to me, "Paul, we think you need to get out of Athens

0:24:570:25:02

"and go somewhere normal."

0:25:020:25:04

BELL RINGS

0:25:060:25:09

I'm not seeing any election posters.

0:25:160:25:18

It's a nice place.

0:25:180:25:20

People are actually moving here from the city.

0:25:200:25:24

It's deep Greece, real Greece.

0:25:240:25:27

We should have gone to the village with the election posters.

0:25:270:25:29

Oh, come on.

0:25:290:25:32

Look, come.

0:25:320:25:33

THEY SPEAK GREEK

0:25:350:25:41

English television.

0:25:410:25:42

We're doing a report about the election...

0:25:420:25:45

SHE SPEAKS GREEK

0:25:450:25:47

You know Greek? A little.

0:25:470:25:49

Please, we only have two chairs.

0:25:490:25:52

The bank foreclosed on the other one.

0:25:520:25:54

LAUGHTER

0:25:540:25:56

Why you come here? GPS go wrong?

0:25:560:25:58

Good thing about Greece, the sunshine is free.

0:26:000:26:03

They haven't sold it to China yet.

0:26:030:26:05

What party do you support?

0:26:050:26:07

Listen, miss...

0:26:090:26:10

for 20 years in this village, no election campaign.

0:26:100:26:15

Vote PASOK every time.

0:26:150:26:17

PASOK is the mainstream socialist party.

0:26:170:26:20

Cows come home from milking.

0:26:200:26:22

When sun goes down, people go to elections for milking by PASOK.

0:26:220:26:25

But now...

0:26:260:26:28

..all shops are closed.

0:26:290:26:30

I make just money enough to pay taxes and stay out of jail.

0:26:320:26:36

We had enough. What's the problem with PASOK?

0:26:380:26:41

Problem not PASOK.

0:26:420:26:44

Problem is octopus.

0:26:450:26:47

Octopus has eight legs, yes?

0:26:490:26:51

You know what octopus does?

0:26:510:26:53

Always, it is sucking.

0:26:540:26:56

Sucking your blood.

0:26:560:26:58

Look.

0:26:580:26:59

Octopus is Goldman Sachs.

0:27:000:27:03

World's most powerful investment bank.

0:27:030:27:06

Deep Greece, yeah?

0:27:080:27:10

Press your red button and roll on this.

0:27:100:27:13

Sir, have a seat.

0:27:130:27:15

Please continue.

0:27:150:27:16

Listen.

0:27:180:27:19

2001, Goldman Sachs gives Greece secret loan.

0:27:210:27:27

2.8 billion.

0:27:270:27:30

Loan goes bad.

0:27:300:27:32

Now Greece owes five billion.

0:27:320:27:35

Wall Street goes bust, Goldman Sachs bailed out.

0:27:360:27:39

Greece goes bust, European Central Bank tells Greece -

0:27:410:27:44

cut wages, cut pensions, cut hospitals!

0:27:440:27:48

Who is boss of European Central Bank?

0:27:490:27:53

Mario Draghi.

0:27:530:27:55

Who was boss of Goldman Sachs international division 2002 to 2005?

0:27:550:28:01

Mario Draghi.

0:28:010:28:03

But Draghi wasn't there when the loan was made... Oh, come on!

0:28:030:28:06

Look, let me just ask you one thing.

0:28:060:28:08

Golden Dawn.

0:28:080:28:10

Golden Dawn is the neo-fascist party.

0:28:100:28:12

What do you think of Golden Dawn?

0:28:130:28:15

You see this wall?

0:28:160:28:18

1944, my grandma, she captured Nazi officer,

0:28:200:28:25

hang him from this hook, takes knife and...

0:28:250:28:29

What would your grandma think of Greece today?

0:28:320:28:34

Yeah, listen, have you got any old photos of Grandma?

0:28:340:28:37

We could maybe film you looking at them... Photographs!

0:28:370:28:40

Grandma!

0:28:400:28:42

LAUGHTER Come here!

0:28:420:28:44

The Germans came to this village in 1941 to kill us.

0:28:540:29:00

Now the Germans tell us our pensions must be cut in half.

0:29:000:29:04

Aged 94, I earn more than my grandchildren.

0:29:040:29:09

The mountains are howling with Greek blood.

0:29:100:29:14

Every Easter for 1,000 years, we roast lamb.

0:29:140:29:20

Next year, if we have to, we take a loaf of bread, baste it

0:29:200:29:24

in olive oil, oregano, we roast that.

0:29:240:29:27

But surrender to Germany?

0:29:270:29:31

European Central Bank, IMF?

0:29:310:29:33

Never.

0:29:330:29:36

Never!

0:29:360:29:37

NEVER!

0:29:370:29:38

We have to vote for him!

0:29:380:29:40

For Syriza!

0:29:410:29:43

For the one who says to IMF, Berlin, Brussels, ECB,

0:29:430:29:49

Goldman Sachs, "Fuck you!"

0:29:490:29:52

The one who says...

0:29:530:29:55

HE SPEAKS GREEK

0:29:550:29:59

THEY BOTH CHANT IN GREEK

0:30:030:30:07

BELL TOLLS

0:30:100:30:12

BELL TOLLS

0:30:150:30:18

BELL TOLLS

0:30:200:30:22

Syriza lost the election.

0:30:220:30:24

But only just.

0:30:260:30:28

I was in their HQ when they heard the news.

0:30:280:30:31

We lost.

0:30:350:30:37

Thank God.

0:30:370:30:38

We were not ready.

0:30:390:30:41

And I'm thinking, not ready for what?

0:30:410:30:43

Gezi Park in Istanbul.

0:30:590:31:02

It's the last green space in the downtown of the city,

0:31:020:31:05

so naturally the government wants to turn it into a shopping mall.

0:31:050:31:08

People protest. They set up a tent camp.

0:31:100:31:13

10,000 people come - and more.

0:31:140:31:16

Some people drink beer.

0:31:180:31:19

Some women do yoga in leotards.

0:31:210:31:24

Some boys put their arms around some girls.

0:31:240:31:27

To them it means, "green space, not concrete,"

0:31:270:31:31

or, "democracy, not autocratic rule."

0:31:310:31:34

Erdogan, the prime minister, calls them "terrorists," "traitors."

0:31:370:31:42

The police attack.

0:31:420:31:44

People build barricades, brick by brick.

0:31:450:31:48

Like we did in the commune.

0:31:480:31:50

Stop, stop, stay calm!

0:31:520:31:54

Every football team is here! Besiktas! Fenerbahce! Galatasaray!

0:31:540:32:00

You are safe! They're not coming!

0:32:000:32:03

CS gas is not really gas, it's powder,

0:32:030:32:07

so don't put water on your face, it only makes it worse.

0:32:070:32:11

Use this, does anybody want? Hey! Do you want? Where are you from?

0:32:110:32:15

England. What team? What team? Man United. A-ah!

0:32:150:32:19

What team are you from? Besiktas! But we're all here together.

0:32:190:32:23

I thought you guys hated each other's guts.

0:32:230:32:26

We do! On a normal day we'd knife each other,

0:32:260:32:28

but here we are all brothers. I mean, look.

0:32:280:32:32

They fire these at our faces. You want to film? Yeah.

0:32:320:32:35

Listen. Everybody's here - teachers, lawyers, engineers.

0:32:360:32:41

We are all Muslims, but I don't want my country to end up like Iran!

0:32:410:32:46

THEY CHANT IN TURKISH

0:32:460:32:48

Last week, I was walking down the street, and this religious

0:33:010:33:05

asshole with a beard says to me that this is immodest!

0:33:050:33:11

This!

0:33:110:33:12

This is my own body!

0:33:120:33:14

Listen, what are you going to do, though,

0:33:140:33:16

if 50% of society hates your guts?

0:33:160:33:19

What are we going to do? Yes. Watch...

0:33:190:33:23

SOFT SLOW MUSIC PLAYS

0:33:250:33:27

All this happened in the commune too.

0:34:220:34:25

But to kill 30,000 revolutionaries,

0:34:250:34:27

all you need is 10,000 idiots deluded by aristocrats and priests.

0:34:270:34:31

Listen, you can take your aristocrats and your priests,

0:34:310:34:35

and your idiots and your imams,

0:34:350:34:38

but with a digital network...

0:34:380:34:40

You can have all the newspapers owned by millionaires,

0:34:400:34:43

you can have the TV owned by the state,

0:34:430:34:45

but truth will always travel faster than lies.

0:34:450:34:48

The reactionaries also have cell phones.

0:34:480:34:50

What if their lies overtake your truth?

0:34:500:34:52

Well, what happens then is you get two truths, yeah? Two truths.

0:34:520:34:56

The true truth, and the reactionary fascist dingbat truth.

0:34:560:34:59

Suppose they shut the internet down?

0:34:590:35:01

They do. They've just done it in Turkey, they keep trying.

0:35:010:35:05

But you can't de-network people's brains.

0:35:050:35:07

Look, do you think that generation is going to go back to

0:35:070:35:10

a world of hierarchy and propaganda and bullshit?

0:35:100:35:14

What I know is there is always another way things can go.

0:35:140:35:17

Something much worse - something you thought would never return.

0:35:170:35:20

In one country after another, people were offered the future -

0:35:310:35:34

and they said, "No, thanks."

0:35:340:35:36

So some people with power started to face a choice between democracy

0:35:380:35:43

and a Rolex watch, or between the rule of law and keeping hold of your

0:35:430:35:47

yacht, and some said, "I'll take the Rolex watch and the yacht, please."

0:35:470:35:52

But if you don't want the future which so many people fought for

0:35:540:35:58

and some even started to live,

0:35:580:36:01

what you are going to get is the past.

0:36:010:36:04

GIRL SINGS

0:36:090:36:12

GIRL SINGS

0:36:170:36:22

SUDDEN EXPLOSION

0:36:290:36:31

From now on, all the hierarchical forces in the world strike back.

0:36:450:36:50

In Egypt, the army overthrows the elected government,

0:36:500:36:53

the Muslim Brotherhood.

0:36:530:36:54

Now, millions of people go on the streets to support the army,

0:36:560:36:59

some because they are terrified that Egypt's going to become

0:36:590:37:01

an Islamic state.

0:37:010:37:03

Others because they're just exhausted by the chaos

0:37:030:37:05

of the revolution.

0:37:050:37:07

But the Muslim Brotherhood -

0:37:070:37:09

they understand about networks and tent camps.

0:37:090:37:13

And they occupy a square.

0:37:130:37:14

On the 14th of August, 2013, the Egyptian army clears the square.

0:37:160:37:21

817 people are killed...

0:37:220:37:26

..we think.

0:37:280:37:29

They weren't counting.

0:37:300:37:32

According to Human Rights Watch,

0:37:320:37:34

this is the biggest single mass killing of protesters in one day,

0:37:340:37:38

in modern history.

0:37:380:37:40

In November, 2013, the army brings in a law

0:37:430:37:47

to ban all protest.

0:37:470:37:48

It's called the Protest Law...

0:37:480:37:50

and the students and the bloggers and the secular young people,

0:37:500:37:56

who'd started the revolution,

0:37:560:37:58

they call a protest against the Protest Law...

0:37:580:38:00

and it lasts about five minutes.

0:38:000:38:04

And some are put in jail.

0:38:040:38:06

Like the blogger -

0:38:070:38:09

Alaa Abdel Fattah.

0:38:090:38:10

PIANO MUSIC

0:38:160:38:19

In prison, I try to make up for my inactivity

0:38:240:38:28

and my helplessness - by reading.

0:38:280:38:30

I read, amongst other things, about autism.

0:38:330:38:35

Autism is a good metaphor for our condition.

0:38:370:38:41

A child loses the ability to speak.

0:38:420:38:45

A generation loses the ability to chant.

0:38:470:38:51

The thing is, with letters from prison,

0:38:510:38:53

sometimes you have to work out what they really mean.

0:38:530:38:55

While I was writing, a busload of prisoners

0:38:570:39:00

came from a jail where things are...bad.

0:39:000:39:03

The state produced the Protest Law to use against the Brotherhood.

0:39:050:39:10

But we insisted on trying it out first, with our own bodies.

0:39:110:39:15

According to Amnesty International, torture

0:39:150:39:18

and arbitrary detention are widespread in Egypt.

0:39:180:39:21

Methods of torture include electric shocks, rape,

0:39:210:39:27

cigarette burns, hanging from a door.

0:39:270:39:30

We've been expecting them since the news

0:39:310:39:33

of their torture was leaked into the papers.

0:39:330:39:36

We tried to prepare but...

0:39:380:39:39

..how do you welcome a friend

0:39:410:39:43

who has been through the battle with you...

0:39:430:39:46

but been through this experience alone?

0:39:460:39:49

We adopt autism.

0:39:510:39:52

We don't allow ourselves to connect with how they're feeling.

0:39:540:39:57

We greet them with a detailed report about the facts.

0:39:590:40:03

They reply with similar autism.

0:40:030:40:06

With a detailed report about the torture, in a steady,

0:40:060:40:10

mechanical delivery with no embarrassment,

0:40:100:40:14

no concealment.

0:40:140:40:15

People with autism, their problem is...

0:40:170:40:20

there are hidden rules they just can't understand.

0:40:200:40:24

Now, in Egypt, there are hidden rules,

0:40:260:40:30

a hidden constitution.

0:40:300:40:32

Perhaps it is a kind of autism that blinds us to this

0:40:340:40:38

hidden constitution.

0:40:380:40:39

A disability that makes us unable to learn

0:40:410:40:44

the hidden rules by instinct.

0:40:440:40:46

An autism which makes us take our own words literally

0:40:480:40:52

and so believe, for example, that the revolution really continues!

0:40:520:40:58

Or that the people really demand the fall of the regime.

0:40:590:41:04

The blogger, Alaa Abd El-Fattah,

0:41:060:41:08

remains in prison for breaking the Protest Law.

0:41:080:41:11

In February 2017, when he insisted on his right

0:41:110:41:14

to read books in prison, the authorities

0:41:140:41:17

cancelled the right to read books for everybody in the jail.

0:41:170:41:20

From about 2014, history seemed to speed up.

0:41:290:41:34

As well as war and repression,

0:41:340:41:36

I started to notice this attack on truth.

0:41:360:41:39

Large numbers of people seem to be convinced that

0:41:390:41:42

objective truth itself was becoming...

0:41:420:41:45

impossible.

0:41:450:41:46

But it was not until December 2014

0:41:560:41:58

that I sat down to write about it, on New Year's Eve.

0:41:580:42:01

This is what I wrote on Facebook...

0:42:010:42:03

"The whole year is stained for me by the global disorder

0:42:070:42:11

"attendant on the USA's withdrawal from a world it's pre-messed up.

0:42:110:42:15

"Ukraine, an authoritarian regime in Moscow,

0:42:180:42:22

"half of Syria and Iraq under Isis control,

0:42:220:42:26

"and my Twitter timeline full of dead bodies and refugees.

0:42:260:42:30

"I'm not calling for the USA to go in and sort it out,

0:42:300:42:32

"I'm just holding the whole thing up as a warning.

0:42:320:42:36

"This situation is getting equally serious to the mid-1930s.

0:42:360:42:40

"We are sliding towards a world of chaos and dictatorship

0:42:400:42:45

"and lawlessness and violence. And the plane journeys

0:42:450:42:49

"me and my colleagues are taking to get there just get shorter.

0:42:490:42:52

"Meanwhile, there is a rising froth of disbelief.

0:42:520:42:57

"Because, with every lie our media in America and Britain tell,

0:42:570:43:03

"it just gets worse.

0:43:030:43:05

"People like Sisi in Egypt and Putin in Russia

0:43:050:43:08

"and Erdogan in Turkey just revel in the confusion.

0:43:080:43:12

"And so, nothing is true.

0:43:120:43:15

"All media are foreign spies.

0:43:150:43:18

"All footage is doctored.

0:43:180:43:20

"All images are Photoshopped.

0:43:200:43:23

"And all outrages are expected.

0:43:230:43:26

"The aim is to make journalists

0:43:260:43:30

"and activists give up.

0:43:300:43:32

"Because what's the point?

0:43:320:43:34

"Nothing's worth the trouble or the risk

0:43:340:43:36

"because you're never going to be believed."

0:43:360:43:38

And yet, people go on resisting.

0:43:400:43:43

In New York City, there are people in the streets protesting

0:43:470:43:50

because the police choked a black man to death.

0:43:500:43:54

And they're chanting.

0:43:540:43:55

"I can't breathe.

0:43:580:44:01

"I can't breathe."

0:44:020:44:03

What I want you to consider is,

0:44:050:44:07

with everything you wrote or said,

0:44:070:44:10

did you help cause the car crash?

0:44:100:44:12

CHEERING PLAYS

0:44:190:44:22

'What will you do to the oligarchy?'

0:44:280:44:30

We are going to destroy the basis upon which they have built

0:44:310:44:35

for decade after decade a system, a network,

0:44:350:44:39

that viciously sucks the energy

0:44:390:44:42

and economic power from everybody else in society.

0:44:420:44:46

BELL TOLLS

0:44:530:44:55

It's midnight.

0:44:570:44:59

Greece is officially bankrupt.

0:44:590:45:03

Cheers. ALL: Cheers. Cheers, everybody.

0:45:030:45:06

Cheers, cheers, cheers, cheers.

0:45:060:45:07

I'm in a bar in Athens

0:45:070:45:09

and the banks have now been closed for 11 days.

0:45:090:45:12

Syriza, the left party, won the election,

0:45:140:45:16

but now, they're in Brussels trying to negotiate a compromise.

0:45:160:45:20

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank, all they want is surrender.

0:45:200:45:24

And with every hour, things get worse.

0:45:240:45:27

It's like we are living under a siege.

0:45:270:45:29

See how quiet it is?

0:45:290:45:31

It's the same all over the city.

0:45:310:45:35

If anyone has any cash left, they don't want to spend it.

0:45:350:45:38

Everybody needs a drink, but they are thinking,

0:45:390:45:42

"Is this the last one I will ever buy?"

0:45:420:45:45

Don't worry, I've got money.

0:45:450:45:48

Huh? Next round is on me.

0:45:480:45:51

It's on me, malakas.

0:45:510:45:52

Look. Hey! Raki all around, huh?

0:45:520:45:56

Hey!

0:45:560:45:57

Handsome.

0:45:570:45:59

Come, you want to go to the strip club? Huh?

0:45:590:46:02

Didn't you hear,

0:46:020:46:04

five euros is all it costs for a blow job now.

0:46:040:46:09

SHE LAUGHS

0:46:090:46:10

She teaches in a nursery.

0:46:100:46:12

LAUGHTER

0:46:120:46:14

The mothers are in tears when they drop off their children

0:46:140:46:17

because they have no money to pay, so...

0:46:170:46:20

Yeah, look. Look, huh?

0:46:200:46:21

Look. Look. Huh?

0:46:210:46:24

A little boy says to me, "My mother has no more euros,

0:46:240:46:28

"so I drew her some."

0:46:280:46:31

With this crayons. He cut it out with his little scissors.

0:46:310:46:35

Shit. What?

0:46:350:46:36

They closed the Nestle factory. No.

0:46:360:46:39

We'll be out of baby milk in a week.

0:46:390:46:41

It's a rumour. It's not true. How do you know?

0:46:410:46:43

Hold on.

0:46:430:46:45

Shit. Maybe it is.

0:46:450:46:46

Listen, I spoke to this contact today - he's in corporate security -

0:46:460:46:50

and he told me the pharmacies are going to close

0:46:500:46:53

way before the bakeries. You've got three days left,

0:46:530:46:56

and after that, the question is going to be...

0:46:560:46:59

We know what the question is.

0:46:590:47:01

No, the question is,

0:47:020:47:04

when the doctors run out of medicine,

0:47:040:47:08

can Syriza go to the pharmacies, open them up, take what they need

0:47:080:47:12

and distribute it themselves? Huh?

0:47:120:47:14

Same for the hospitals -

0:47:140:47:15

run them without wages,

0:47:150:47:17

without electricity.

0:47:170:47:19

The Athenian commune, it's what we always dreamed of,

0:47:190:47:22

to control the streets, to inflict chaos.

0:47:220:47:24

The Greek oligarchy.

0:47:240:47:28

They are itching to intervene.

0:47:280:47:30

There is enough fascists in the riot police to make it happen.

0:47:300:47:34

But they understand -

0:47:340:47:36

Syriza is controlled chaos.

0:47:360:47:38

Without Syriza, uncontrolled chaos.

0:47:390:47:44

I said to the Syriza guy - he was a tough, committed activist,

0:47:440:47:47

about my age - "Can you do it, though?"

0:47:470:47:50

Do what? Stage the Athenian commune.

0:47:500:47:52

Say to the European Central Bank, "Fuck you," and default?

0:47:520:47:56

Your banks could close forever.

0:47:570:47:58

SHE LAUGHS Forever?

0:47:580:48:00

Hey, good for us! We just killed capitalism.

0:48:000:48:04

Is Syriza up for it, though?

0:48:050:48:07

Last time we took on the Greek ruling class,

0:48:100:48:13

in the '70s...

0:48:130:48:14

..my dad was one of the most severely tortured.

0:48:160:48:20

My mum's torture was to watch it happen.

0:48:210:48:24

Everybody standing outside parliament,

0:48:250:48:28

everybody holding a banner,

0:48:280:48:31

everybody in the party

0:48:310:48:33

knows somebody like that.

0:48:330:48:34

Are YOU up for it, though?

0:48:360:48:38

Like you, like everybody, I'm just following Twitter, WhatsApp,

0:48:410:48:45

Messenger, waiting to see.

0:48:450:48:47

I had that conversation so many times.

0:48:480:48:51

Everybody's got something at stake, and it doesn't have to be much -

0:48:510:48:55

small house in the village, your kid's music lesson.

0:48:550:48:58

But at some point, you have to look over the precipice

0:48:580:49:01

and ask yourself,

0:49:010:49:03

"Am I prepared to risk it all?"

0:49:030:49:06

If there was a government to overthrow, we could do it.

0:49:060:49:09

But we control the government.

0:49:090:49:12

It's just that the government is not in control of Greece.

0:49:120:49:17

Listen, the rumour is from the talks that the

0:49:170:49:20

European negotiators are saying to the Greeks,

0:49:200:49:22

"Surrender now, or we turn your country into Afghanistan."

0:49:220:49:25

Who wants to live in Afghanistan?

0:49:260:49:29

When this bullshit is over...

0:49:300:49:33

let's go to my island. Huh?

0:49:330:49:34

My uncle, he has a lavender farm.

0:49:360:49:38

He brews tsipouro, 60%.

0:49:380:49:40

On the beach, there are wild horses and a tavern.

0:49:400:49:43

You write poetry?

0:49:440:49:45

Well, my poetry is probably shit.

0:49:460:49:48

But you know what?

0:49:480:49:49

On the island, it sounds OK.

0:49:490:49:51

PAUL LAUGHS

0:49:510:49:53

And that is what happens

0:50:250:50:27

if you don't want to replace one power with another power.

0:50:270:50:30

And if you can't dissolve power

0:50:300:50:33

and replace it with something better,

0:50:330:50:36

sooner or later,

0:50:360:50:37

somebody comes along who does want power,

0:50:370:50:40

and lots of it.

0:50:400:50:42

APPLAUSE PLAYS

0:50:480:50:49

What are the Republican Party doing to themselves?

0:51:040:51:07

I mean, bloody hell, did you see that debate?

0:51:070:51:10

What you have to understand is that, for the Republican right -

0:51:100:51:14

the Tea Party, the Evangelicals -

0:51:140:51:17

this is not about winning in November.

0:51:170:51:20

This is about punishing mainstream Republicans in Congress

0:51:200:51:24

for failing to stop Obama.

0:51:240:51:26

Wow.

0:51:260:51:27

I was in Washington last week,

0:51:270:51:30

and my contacts were very clear

0:51:300:51:31

that this could go right to convention. What you're saying is,

0:51:310:51:34

there's no chance they'll pick a moderate Republican?

0:51:340:51:37

There are no moderate Republicans. Grow up.

0:51:370:51:40

Look at the demographics, all right? BEEP

0:51:400:51:42

Secretary Clinton is polling very well amongst white men with degrees.

0:51:420:51:45

I mean, normally white, male college graduates are strongly Republican.

0:51:450:51:50

BEEP

0:51:500:51:51

But as of today, right now, we are 45-45.

0:51:510:51:57

And the whole FBI thing with the e-mails -

0:51:570:51:58

I mean, that's just fucking bollocks, isn't it?

0:51:580:52:01

Put another way,

0:52:010:52:03

is Hillary Clinton convinced she's not going to get indicted?

0:52:030:52:06

Look, they've said that investigation is closed, all right?

0:52:060:52:09

And the working class? Thank you, yes.

0:52:090:52:12

Well, it depends who the Republicans pick. All right?

0:52:120:52:15

Trump is strong amongst white male, no college,

0:52:150:52:19

but that is only 17% of America.

0:52:190:52:22

So it's a dead cert?

0:52:220:52:24

But this is a tipping point!

0:52:240:52:26

The right is losing the culture war.

0:52:260:52:31

I mean, Paul, you yourself have written about it -

0:52:310:52:34

the new, networked, globally-minded person,

0:52:340:52:39

tolerant of unorthodox relationships.

0:52:390:52:42

The new kind of person? Yes. Yes.

0:52:420:52:45

This is the new majority.

0:52:450:52:47

SHE SIGHS Look,

0:52:480:52:50

we believe, barring accidents,

0:52:500:52:53

that November 2016 is going to be not just a landslide...

0:52:530:52:58

BEEP

0:52:580:53:00

..for the Democrats... SHE LAUGHS

0:53:000:53:02

..but an earthquake.

0:53:030:53:05

The weird thing is, we watched it happen.

0:53:080:53:12

Like a car crash.

0:53:120:53:13

The liberal centre in politics spends five years

0:53:210:53:25

attacking the radical, young, networked protesters,

0:53:250:53:28

and they say to working-class people from small towns

0:53:280:53:31

where there's very little hope,

0:53:310:53:33

"There's no alternative to this."

0:53:330:53:35

Erdogan in Turkey then sends a million Syrian refugees

0:53:370:53:41

to Europe, and Merkel says, "All welcome."

0:53:410:53:43

Assad drops chlorine gas on Aleppo.

0:53:450:53:48

Obama says, "So what?"

0:53:480:53:49

Putin annexes Crimea.

0:53:510:53:54

So what?

0:53:540:53:56

The European Central Bank smashes Greece.

0:53:560:53:58

All the economists in the Western world applaud.

0:53:580:54:01

It's like liberal democracy had a death wish.

0:54:010:54:04

And the internet, which was a network for expanding truth,

0:54:040:54:09

becomes a machine in the hands of hierarchies for obliterating

0:54:090:54:14

the possibility of objective truth at all.

0:54:140:54:17

POUNDING DANCE MUSIC

0:54:210:54:23

That's how we got from 2011 to Donald Trump.

0:54:300:54:33

The young generation used networks to protest.

0:54:330:54:36

The rich used money, power and inertia to stop them.

0:54:360:54:40

And truth became post-truth.

0:54:420:54:44

The borders were strengthened everywhere,

0:54:440:54:47

including people's minds.

0:54:470:54:48

The commune was surrounded.

0:55:000:55:02

It had only death on its horizon.

0:55:030:55:06

It could only be brave, and it was.

0:55:060:55:08

And in dying, it pushed the door wide open to the future

0:55:100:55:16

that was its destiny.

0:55:160:55:17

People say, "I am brave."

0:55:180:55:20

Not really.

0:55:200:55:21

People are simply entranced by events.

0:55:220:55:25

I told you it would end badly.

0:55:280:55:30

What they are trying to do is to convince us that

0:55:330:55:36

the last 30 years was all a dream.

0:55:360:55:39

Women's rights, gay rights, human rights.

0:55:390:55:43

The idea that black lives actually do matter.

0:55:430:55:47

All a dream,

0:55:470:55:49

and if you still think it's real, you are crazy.

0:55:490:55:52

People seem haunted by a fear of freedom.

0:55:540:55:56

They want to be told climate science is bullshit,

0:55:580:56:01

that we're going to make country X great again,

0:56:010:56:04

that all the news is fake,

0:56:040:56:06

so it's much better to trust your gut instinct.

0:56:060:56:09

What sticks with me...

0:56:120:56:14

is the Bat symbol guy.

0:56:140:56:16

The 99%.

0:56:160:56:18

There is nobody coming to save us.

0:56:180:56:22

The superhero that's going to save us

0:56:220:56:25

is us.

0:56:250:56:26

So what can we do?

0:56:270:56:29

Well, for one thing, we can find each other

0:56:290:56:31

across real spaces like this.

0:56:310:56:34

When they asked me to do this play, I said, "Brilliant.

0:56:340:56:37

"That's just what we should do,

0:56:370:56:39

"but we have to start with Brecht.

0:56:390:56:41

"Because Brecht says, in a time of crisis,

0:56:410:56:45

"the theatre has to be like a man who has seen a car crash

0:56:450:56:49

"and says to the bystanders,

0:56:490:56:50

"'Here is what happened.'"

0:56:500:56:54

They said, "Well, how is it going to end?"

0:56:540:56:56

I said, "An actor will read out a poem from Tunisia -

0:56:560:57:02

"an old poem popular during the Arab Spring.

0:57:020:57:06

"It goes...

0:57:060:57:07

"'When the people decide to live, destiny must obey

0:57:090:57:14

"'Darkness will disappear, and chains will be broken

0:57:140:57:19

"'And he who is not embraced by the will to life

0:57:190:57:23

"'Will dissolve and vanish into the air.'"

0:57:230:57:27

HE RECITES POEM IN ORIGINAL LANGUAGE

0:57:400:57:47

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:58:130:58:19

Promise me that you'll come and find me.

0:58:400:58:42

You surely don't think that we could

0:58:440:58:46

set up house together like man and wife?
