That's all on Sportsday at 6.30, now though on BBC News - | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News. | :00:00. | :00:24.
To take us through this week's cinema releases is James King, | :00:25. | :00:27.
Welcome, James, what have you been watching this week? | :00:28. | :00:38.
First up it feels like ages since there has been a new fresh romantic | :00:39. | :00:46.
comedy. It is called the The Big Sick and I will tell you about that. | :00:47. | :00:52.
From Australia, Hounds of Love, a brutal true story, a kidnap drama. | :00:53. | :01:00.
And a big hit in the States, it stars Queen Latifah and is a comedy | :01:01. | :01:01.
called girls strip. This is a really interesting take, | :01:02. | :01:20.
doesn't work as a film? Yes, there is a lot to do is take about it. | :01:21. | :01:24.
Colonel Nang Janney is the writer and the star and he has written it | :01:25. | :01:29.
with his partner about their life. -- Kumail Nanjiani. It is about the | :01:30. | :01:40.
real-life romance. He is from a traditional Pakistani family were as | :01:41. | :01:45.
Emily is a white American, academic and eccentric family. That is the | :01:46. | :01:50.
chalk and cheese dynamic for the romantic comedy. Why so it called | :01:51. | :01:53.
the Big Sick? There is also an illness which happens to one of the | :01:54. | :01:58.
characters. There's a lot happening, a lot of story. The clip is from the | :01:59. | :02:03.
beginning of the movie. He is trying to make it as a stand-up comedian | :02:04. | :02:05.
and meets And now at the niceties are out | :02:06. | :02:06.
of their way, I have to tell you when you yelled at me | :02:07. | :02:20.
really put me off. You should not heckle | :02:21. | :02:22.
comedians, it's so rude. I just gave a woo-hoo, | :02:23. | :02:24.
it's supportive. Yelling anything at | :02:25. | :02:28.
a comedian is considering So if I yelled out, | :02:29. | :02:33.
you are amazing in bed, Yeah, that would be | :02:34. | :02:39.
an accurate heckle. Already it is endearing. The writers | :02:40. | :03:07.
are inspired by the greats, Richard Curtis, Annie Hall and tipsy so if | :03:08. | :03:13.
you are inspired by those movies, that is a good start. That is one of | :03:14. | :03:21.
my favourite films. People have said this is some statement about racial | :03:22. | :03:25.
relations in America right now but it is not, it is a true story about | :03:26. | :03:30.
two people getting together. Is there anything new in talking about | :03:31. | :03:36.
two interracial couples? That is a refreshing thing about this film, it | :03:37. | :03:41.
is in there but it is not trying to make a larger statement. It is just | :03:42. | :03:46.
about what happened to them. It is very charming. He wrote it in but it | :03:47. | :03:54.
is not too self-serving, more affectionate than that? Absolutely, | :03:55. | :04:01.
it is a lovely relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and his parents. I | :04:02. | :04:11.
know his father from his part in ice age and he is showing us what a good | :04:12. | :04:16.
actor he is. I think you could be up for our reward -- and awards for | :04:17. | :04:23.
this performance. I love Holly Hunter. She is just nuts in this and | :04:24. | :04:27.
brilliantly so. How lovely to go into the summer with sums being | :04:28. | :04:34.
genuinely fun. We have not had a fresh romantic comedy for a while. | :04:35. | :04:39.
People think we know all the tricks and the cliches but this actually, | :04:40. | :04:44.
it has a romantic comedy framework but it is doing new things. Our next | :04:45. | :04:50.
film from Australia, I have read lots about it but I know I could not | :04:51. | :04:54.
stomach it, talk me through and explain. Again, loosely based on a | :04:55. | :05:02.
true story about murders which happened in Perth in Western | :05:03. | :05:08.
Australia where a suburban couple were kidnapping teenage girls. What | :05:09. | :05:16.
is gripping about this film is that it is not some exploitative horror | :05:17. | :05:21.
movie. It is a character study of this couple who do this and why they | :05:22. | :05:25.
do it and what is going on in their heads. Specifically, the wife, who | :05:26. | :05:35.
she is and what has gone on in her past and why she is on the situation | :05:36. | :05:40.
and does what she does. That stops it just being a cardboard cutout | :05:41. | :05:46.
horror movie. It is actually about the characters, these | :05:47. | :05:51.
three-dimensional characters the kidnappers and the girls they | :05:52. | :05:55.
kidnap, the all have their story which has stepped out. This is the | :05:56. | :06:01.
first film from Ben Young who captures suburban Australian life | :06:02. | :06:05.
very well, disillusionment and a kitchen sink drama really. It is | :06:06. | :06:09.
brittle and uncomfortable but very well made. I here you and that he is | :06:10. | :06:15.
a talent to watch but I am not sure I have the stomach for that. Girls | :06:16. | :06:22.
Trip, on the other hand takes us back into the lighter world. | :06:23. | :06:30.
Definitely back into the lighter world, Queen Latifah, college | :06:31. | :06:35.
friends go away for the weekend and chaos ensues. Have a look at the | :06:36. | :06:36.
clip. What was that you were saying | :06:37. | :06:39.
about pent-up energy? # I slay, I slay, I slay all day.# | :06:40. | :06:57.
Have a good evening, ladies. Is it fun? Is it silly? It is all of | :06:58. | :07:33.
those things, it has a relentless bubbly Nissan boarding about it. It | :07:34. | :07:38.
was difficult to find a clip we could play. -- ugliness and | :07:39. | :07:47.
bawdiness. Its characters are four confident and successful black woman | :07:48. | :07:51.
and you do not have enough of those movies. It is not an Oscars movie, | :07:52. | :07:57.
it is joyfully frothy and silly which is why it is refreshing. It is | :07:58. | :08:08.
clunky at times but this likeness carries it along. It has been a big | :08:09. | :08:12.
hit in the States and this will change things. That is interesting | :08:13. | :08:20.
because I was thinking how much I enjoyed hidden figures which was the | :08:21. | :08:23.
last time it focused on African American women. The fact that even | :08:24. | :08:29.
resonates with you shows what a positive it is about sort of film. | :08:30. | :08:35.
Hidden figures is great but it is the Oscar worthy serious movie, this | :08:36. | :08:41.
is just joyfully not like that. It is deliberately frothy and flimsy | :08:42. | :08:45.
and everyone is having fun and that is the real novelty. It is a good | :08:46. | :08:51.
time, as those for younger viewers something which Mark was reading | :08:52. | :08:57.
about. This is out no. I could've chosen Dunkirk but everyone has said | :08:58. | :09:04.
how great it is, I do not need to add to that. Captain Underpants is a | :09:05. | :09:10.
DreamWorks animation, based on the bestselling books. The hypnotise the | :09:11. | :09:14.
school principal into believing he is this sk -- this superhero. It is | :09:15. | :09:24.
silly and nonstop. It has that self reflecting quality that adults | :09:25. | :09:28.
alike. There are loads of jokes about pants. The main antagonist is | :09:29. | :09:38.
-- the main protagonist is called Professor Pippi pants. What are you | :09:39. | :09:47.
going to pick for us? I'm going to choose life which is about | :09:48. | :09:51.
astronnaut springing back Martian life form to earth. It starts out as | :09:52. | :09:57.
a single cell organism and grows. When you watch this, you're thinking | :09:58. | :10:03.
alien by Ridley Scott but it is not as good, a lot of similarities, | :10:04. | :10:11.
mainly set in a spaceship. I would say watch it for a Jake Gyllenhaal, | :10:12. | :10:16.
the main star, he always brings melancholy to what he does. He says | :10:17. | :10:22.
some really interesting things. It is familiar as a science-fiction | :10:23. | :10:26.
movie but Jake Gyllenhaal makes it something more than run-of-the-mill. | :10:27. | :10:34.
OK, thank you very much. Thank you very much indeed, that is it for | :10:35. | :10:40.
this week. Whatever you're seeing, enjoyed, see you next week. | :10:41. | :10:53.
Some wet evenings this weekend if you're heading to the cinema one of | :10:54. | :11:00.
which | :11:01. | :11:01. |
