Hello, and welcome to The Film Review. Here he is Mark Kermode. . A | :00:22. | :00:40.
mixed bag. Independence Day Resurgence. Raman Raghav 2.0, an | :00:41. | :00:55.
Indian noir. And Elvis Nixon. Independence Day. One review I read | :00:56. | :01:02.
said it shows no sign of intelligence life. -- intelligent. | :01:03. | :01:14.
I love that the original. It was funny and witty. The story is, Will | :01:15. | :01:29.
Smith was in the original, it was too expensive to get him back, he | :01:30. | :01:32.
said he wanted millions of dollars, they said no, so we do have | :01:33. | :01:39.
returning characters, including the aliens, who are bigger than before. | :01:40. | :01:42.
Age at a make several times. Let's have a look. --A joke they make. | :01:43. | :01:50.
EPIC MUSIC. Oh! Oh my god. What goes up, must come down. Don't worry. | :01:51. | :02:44.
Controlled dive. EPIC MUSIC. Oh! Watch out for the landmarks. | :02:45. | :02:52.
Straight through Tower Bridge. They love the landmarks. Jeff Goldblum is | :02:53. | :02:58.
the best thing in the film and I wanted him to be in it more. Because | :02:59. | :03:04.
it has so many storylines there is not enough Jeff Goldblum. The other | :03:05. | :03:11.
problem is you get the feeling you have seen all of this before. And | :03:12. | :03:17.
not just in Independence Day. The destruction of landmarks is in so | :03:18. | :03:22.
many movies. You get it in Star Wars. A theme about people having a | :03:23. | :03:27.
communal memory or hallucination that those a lot to Close | :03:28. | :03:34.
Encounters. And I was thinking of Godzilla as well. -- owes a lot to. | :03:35. | :03:40.
When you are thinking of how many films it reminds you of, that is bad | :03:41. | :03:44.
news. The script is all over the place and makes no sense. The | :03:45. | :03:49.
previous one had some logic and this doesn't. But it isn't without some | :03:50. | :03:57.
popcorn spectacle theme. There is one moment when they say the aliens | :03:58. | :04:01.
will land and it will go in the ocean. And someone said, which part | :04:02. | :04:06.
of it, all of it! At it felt perfunctory. -- but. No one was | :04:07. | :04:13.
screaming out for it. If you love the original as much as I do, | :04:14. | :04:17.
nothing will make you think they are two equal parts. This isn't | :04:18. | :04:28.
Godfather II. It is the absolute definition of hmm, all right, not | :04:29. | :04:35.
great. A classic sequel. OK. Raman Raghav 2.0. This is a noir Turella | :04:36. | :04:44.
from a respected director in Mumbai. -- thriller. It is inspired from a | :04:45. | :04:49.
serial killer in the 1960s. But it is not about that killer, it is | :04:50. | :04:56.
about another, and a drug snorting corrupt pop. This is a familiar | :04:57. | :05:04.
idea. -- cop. Two sides of the same coin. We have seen it many times. | :05:05. | :05:09.
Especially in Martin Scorsese's films. What we have is a terrific | :05:10. | :05:21.
performance by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the killer. It seems to be all | :05:22. | :05:26.
style, but one of the most impressive things about it if it is | :05:27. | :05:36.
quiet gruelling and tough, but most of the violence happens offscreen. | :05:37. | :05:39.
It is interesting that things happening away from the camera can | :05:40. | :05:46.
be more interesting than what isn't. And we had Frost Nixon, this is | :05:47. | :05:49.
Elvis Nixon. Slightly different. This is based on the true story. But | :05:50. | :05:57.
I think that is always the giveaway. They made up a bunch of stuff. | :05:58. | :06:05.
Elvis, for reasons that are compensated, got on a plane and went | :06:06. | :06:09.
to DC where he turns up at the White House saying, I want to meet the | :06:10. | :06:12.
president, it is a matter of national importance. Richard Nixon | :06:13. | :06:18.
was the president and didn't know what to do about it but his aide | :06:19. | :06:24.
said you should meet him, he is important. And there was a meeting | :06:25. | :06:27.
which was initially meant to be secret but later on the photograph | :06:28. | :06:31.
of them shaking hands became iconic. There was no taping at that point. | :06:32. | :06:44.
This is pre-Watergate. Anyway, the story is, they thought, let's have | :06:45. | :06:47.
fun with it. Put them in The Oval Office. Michael Shannon and Kevin | :06:48. | :06:52.
Spacey enjoying themselves. Here is a clip. One of the girls outside | :06:53. | :07:02.
reminds me of someone. How many square feet is Graceland? 10,000? A | :07:03. | :07:13.
fine size for a home. Of course, the White House here is 55,000 feet | :07:14. | :07:19.
something like that. I made a few additions. It might be more than | :07:20. | :07:23.
that. I don't think it is the size of a man's home that defines him. | :07:24. | :07:34.
Mnm's are my favourite. Mine as well. So, how can I help you? The | :07:35. | :07:43.
answer is, he wants to become a thread all agent at large. He wants | :07:44. | :07:56.
to collect a Federal badge. Collected in. -- Federal agent. It | :07:57. | :08:02.
gets a lot right. But Michael Shannon doesn't have the vocal heft | :08:03. | :08:08.
for elders of that period but he does have the hand gestures. I am | :08:09. | :08:14.
and Elvis fan and I like his performance. When you consider how | :08:15. | :08:19.
bizarre the real-life meeting was, it is odd that they thought they | :08:20. | :08:25.
needed to embellish and have a karate demonstration. Eldest did | :08:26. | :08:28.
those but it is weird to insert it. For myself, I think it would be | :08:29. | :08:35.
better if it was closer but they decided to do it broadly | :08:36. | :08:41.
comedically. There are a few touches that showed genuine affection | :08:42. | :08:46.
towards Elvis, at least. All the time I was watching it, I thought, | :08:47. | :08:51.
it was fine, but there is a much were the story behind this which is | :08:52. | :08:54.
just the straight, down the line meeting between the two. For me, the | :08:55. | :09:00.
weird thing was the fact that Richard Nixon was three times during | :09:01. | :09:04.
the meeting recorded as having said it was important he retained his | :09:05. | :09:10.
credibility. He was almost prophetically obsessed with | :09:11. | :09:13.
retaining his credibility. And Elvis said he had laid Vegas and said it | :09:14. | :09:22.
was a tough gig. -- played. And Nixon said he did. He knew. But they | :09:23. | :09:36.
played off each other well. It is fanciful fluff. What is the best | :09:37. | :09:56.
film out? Tale of Tales. A film with sea beasts and dragons and Toby | :09:57. | :09:58.
Jones becoming obsessed by a giant flea. An adult fairytale. I thought | :09:59. | :10:03.
it was good fun. I have now seen this film three times since it | :10:04. | :10:08.
opened and it just gets better. Have you got plans to see it again? No, | :10:09. | :10:15.
that is enough. And I love that I am Belfast. A wonderful filmmaker. A | :10:16. | :10:24.
film about a woman who claims to be Belfast, the embodiment of the city. | :10:25. | :10:29.
She takes us on a tour of its history and its location is. It is | :10:30. | :10:35.
lovely. This is not so much like a documentary as a pull and, a visual | :10:36. | :10:41.
bomb about the place he grew up. -- poem. It has a magical eye for what | :10:42. | :10:46.
appears to be completely insignificant and irrelevant detail | :10:47. | :10:51.
but he will find something truly interesting about it. No one else | :10:52. | :10:56.
makes movies like it. I think it is a fine piece of work. It is out on | :10:57. | :11:01.
DVD now. Not enough people saw it in the cinema. It sounds lovely. Check | :11:02. | :11:09.
it out. Many thanks, as ever. And a quick reminder, you will find more | :11:10. | :11:19.
film reviews on our website. That is it for me is weak. Thank you so much | :11:20. | :11:26.
for watching. Goodbye. -- for me this week. | :11:27. | :11:33.
It's a slightly fresher feel to the weather this weekend, | :11:34. | :11:35.
as the high humidity moves away, which fuelled the thunderstorms over | :11:36. | :11:39. |
