look forward to reigning champions Spain's tie against Turkey tonight.

:00:00.3:59:59

That's at 6:30pm tonight. Hello and welcome to

:00:00.:00:00.

The Film Review on BBC News. To take us through this week's

:00:00.:00:21.

cinema releases is Mark Kermode. We've got Tale Of Tales starring

:00:22.:00:38.

Salma Hayek among others, then we got The Conjuring two, the sequel to

:00:39.:00:42.

the hit horror film. This time, it takes place in Enfield in England.

:00:43.:00:48.

Then we got The Violators, a gritty, British flick. From Enfield to

:00:49.:01:00.

Birkenhead. Tale Of Tales is from Matteo Garrone. This is his first

:01:01.:01:03.

English-language film although it does star and international cast. It

:01:04.:01:09.

is based on 17th-century fairy tales which inspired the likes of Hans

:01:10.:01:12.

Christian Andersen so you might recognise some of the themes in it.

:01:13.:01:15.

There are three different stories told in tandem. Salma Hayek must

:01:16.:01:23.

heed the heart of a sea serpent to errant the heart of a child she

:01:24.:01:27.

claims, then he lusty king who was to bed every whim and in the

:01:28.:01:32.

obsessed with his pet the but also obsessed with his pet the but also

:01:33.:01:41.

marrying off his daughter. -- flea. Have you found something to please

:01:42.:01:47.

you? They are also beautiful. Why did you send me them? You want to

:01:48.:01:54.

look beautiful on your wedding day. So I am to be married? Of course.

:01:55.:02:02.

You were right, Violet. This time we found you a husband. I understand

:02:03.:02:04.

you are bored living with us at the you are bored living with us at the

:02:05.:02:08.

castle and this way you can venture forth and discover new places. It's

:02:09.:02:14.

what you want. Who will my husband be, father? Well, he will be braver

:02:15.:02:22.

than the most valiant knight and wiser than our own court doctor.

:02:23.:02:30.

Thank you. What is his name? Not even I know his name yet. How can

:02:31.:02:38.

that be? Do you not know him? As an avid reader, you know that the

:02:39.:02:41.

husband of a princess can only be discovered through the tournament.

:02:42.:02:49.

What if I don't love him? You will love him, Violet. You will. That's

:02:50.:02:58.

weird! You haven't seen anything yet! There's a lot of weirdness in

:02:59.:03:03.

this film. There is weird body horror which we can show you here,

:03:04.:03:07.

but Toby Jones brings a lot of levity and humour. He is such a

:03:08.:03:12.

great comic actor and it is a strange relationship he has with his

:03:13.:03:16.

daughter and she learns very much that happy endings aren't

:03:17.:03:20.

inevitable. This is not a fairy tale you want to take your children to.

:03:21.:03:28.

Toby Jones is great fun and Vincent Cassel is very amusing. This story

:03:29.:03:36.

was beautiful, Salma Hayek eats the heart of a sea serpent. It wasn't

:03:37.:03:42.

very gripping. This is a long film and a bit slow in parts. When it's

:03:43.:03:47.

good, it's great, but you have to be in it for the long haul. I'm

:03:48.:03:51.

surprised this is the director of Gomorrah which is about the Mafia, a

:03:52.:03:58.

gritty, realist film. You can smell the streets of Naples in that film.

:03:59.:04:12.

Completely different. I saw it in Cannes last year. It's mainly filmed

:04:13.:04:13.

in Italy and I think it is what in Italy and I think it is what

:04:14.:04:17.

going through for the top spots. It also reminds us that faded hills,

:04:18.:04:21.

Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm are not really think

:04:22.:04:25.

you want to share with children. Some of them are very scary.

:04:26.:04:30.

Particularly the last one, Shirley Henderson comes in as one of the old

:04:31.:04:33.

ladies that Vincent Cassel's King ladies that Vincent Cassel's King

:04:34.:04:46.

falls far. -- for. There is a horror to their desire to appear young. The

:04:47.:04:55.

Conjuring two. This was a big hit a couple of years ago in the states

:04:56.:04:59.

and I'm glad they brought the action over to the UK because it is an

:05:00.:05:03.

American series. They follow the same couple, Ed and Lorraine. These

:05:04.:05:11.

were real-life paranormal investigators and the idea is that

:05:12.:05:14.

they did actually come over to Enfield in 1977 to investigate the

:05:15.:05:18.

alleged hauntings which we've heard about recently, there was a

:05:19.:05:23.

television series about it. The young adult Janet claimed that she

:05:24.:05:32.

was possessed -- young girl. There was a photo of her levitating or

:05:33.:05:37.

jumping up and down on the bed. My problem with this is because it is

:05:38.:05:41.

based on a true story which was labelled a hoax and the address that

:05:42.:05:46.

in the film, it takes away from what could have been a very interesting,

:05:47.:05:51.

claustrophobic haunted house film where you get to suspend your

:05:52.:05:54.

disbelief. It's an interesting concept and you can see why The

:05:55.:06:08.

Conjuring it will. -- did well. Is it not too late, after the Omen?

:06:09.:06:12.

That is something retro about it but That is something retro about it but

:06:13.:06:17.

it has that feel to it. I like it because I'm not a fan of torture

:06:18.:06:23.

movies or social media horror movies and it has a nice, vintage appeal

:06:24.:06:27.

and it looks fantastic. There are jumps gears and a sense of

:06:28.:06:32.

claustrophobia but it jumps away from the action in Enfield too

:06:33.:06:38.

often. There is also a sub John of horror films like Babadook when

:06:39.:06:47.

you're never sure who is head the horror is taking part in. This feels

:06:48.:06:54.

more generic. The Violators, this is the first film she has directed.

:06:55.:07:02.

Lauren McQueen plays a 15-year-old girl who lives in a Birkenhead

:07:03.:07:05.

council estate. Because of her circumstances and her family being

:07:06.:07:10.

in prison, she has to bring up our brothers and she encounters and

:07:11.:07:13.

older girl who wants to be friendly with her. She invites her over and a

:07:14.:07:19.

bit of a mystery evolves as to what is going on with this girl. Let's

:07:20.:07:26.

have a look at the clip. What did they exclude you for? What makes you

:07:27.:07:35.

been something bad. One step away been something bad. One step away

:07:36.:07:45.

from an open prison. You're not exactly a convent girl, are you? I'm

:07:46.:07:51.

not being funny, but I've got somewhere I need to be. So what

:07:52.:08:08.

about you? I've got my A-levels in a few weeks. I'm studying English,

:08:09.:08:11.

Greek, chemistry and physics and politics. What can you do with that?

:08:12.:08:21.

Who knows? My dad is telling everyone I'm a dead cert for

:08:22.:08:27.

Cambridge. You can see it's about class. It's about these two girls

:08:28.:08:32.

from different worlds thrown together and it tells the story of

:08:33.:08:37.

the young girls' friendship with an older man, a local pawnbroker who is

:08:38.:08:43.

offering protection and help, but at what cost? These are stories play

:08:44.:08:48.

out and you're following her very closely. It's not a cheerful watch.

:08:49.:08:53.

There are issues of abuse, but I think it is well done. It is

:08:54.:08:57.

possibly over ambitious because it tries to go further still approach

:08:58.:09:01.

to hard at the end and I just like it when it's doing kitchen-sink

:09:02.:09:05.

realism. The writer and director, is this based on one of her novels? No,

:09:06.:09:12.

it's an original story but it has a lot in common with her novels about

:09:13.:09:15.

emerging sexuality and strong young women. It's a low-budget British

:09:16.:09:21.

film but it's great to see a new female director in Britain, looking

:09:22.:09:27.

at working-class young girls who are struggling with sexuality. Your Best

:09:28.:09:34.

of the week is the Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.

:09:35.:09:38.

Something fun at the cinema if you want a laugh. I was impressed with

:09:39.:09:43.

the comedic abilities. It is a different 1977 than The Conjuring

:09:44.:09:51.

too-mac! This is the pornography scene in Los Angeles where a private

:09:52.:09:58.

investigator tries to solve the case. It's not about the case, it's

:09:59.:10:00.

about the action and the comedy and about the action and the comedy and

:10:01.:10:06.

camaraderie between these two guys. Inherent vice is more like it. It's

:10:07.:10:10.

completely incomprehensible but that's because the entire cast of

:10:11.:10:21.

characters are on dope. The little sister is a Japanese manga book.

:10:22.:10:29.

They grow up together and invite their half-sister to live with them

:10:30.:10:33.

and it is veering towards sentimental and melodramatic but it

:10:34.:10:38.

is a lovely story. It is a bit brighter than Chekhov. Almost

:10:39.:10:46.

anything is brighter later than Chekhov!

:10:47.:10:48.

We've had a real mix of weather types once again today. There has

:10:49.:11:14.

been some sunshine, some hefty showers but the sun was breaking

:11:15.:11:16.

through the clouds in Belfast in

:11:17.:11:17.
