the fallout from a leaked report from British cycling elite | :00:00. | :00:00.
performance programme. Now it is time for the film review. | :00:00. | :00:18.
Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News. | :00:19. | :00:22.
To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. | :00:23. | :00:26.
A very mixed batch. We have Kong: Skull Island, Love Island and we | :00:27. | :00:55.
have Elle. Does the world need another King Kong film? Need, not | :00:56. | :01:05.
necessarily, but once. It is the land that Time forgot meets | :01:06. | :01:09.
Apocalypse now. John Goodman managed to persuade the US Army to escort | :01:10. | :01:15.
him to Skull Island, where he thinks something is going on. They arrive | :01:16. | :01:19.
and they start carpet bombing the island in order to shake up | :01:20. | :01:25.
everything on the island. A massive aid starts swatting helicopters out | :01:26. | :01:29.
of the sky. It does have a great sense of fun about it. We have Sam | :01:30. | :01:34.
Jackson, the soldier, who is not going to lose this battle. John C | :01:35. | :01:39.
Reilly who has been there since World War II. Tom Huddlestone as a | :01:40. | :01:44.
tracker, they are trying to get from one side of the island to the other | :01:45. | :01:48.
and there are major beasties are afoot. Here is a clip. | :01:49. | :01:53.
I've taken enough photos of mass graves | :01:54. | :02:07.
The clear site is just on the other side of this | :02:08. | :02:14.
We'll cross through and make it to the highest point West. | :02:15. | :02:17.
We need to be going to the north side right | :02:18. | :02:21.
And you are welcome to do that, my man... | :02:22. | :02:25.
I love the comment that said it is jolly good fun as long as you check | :02:26. | :02:45.
your brain at the cloakroom? It is smarter than that. The director made | :02:46. | :02:50.
this small film called Kings of summer and very much like Gareth | :02:51. | :02:53.
Edwards who went from monsters to Godzilla. It is like a $200 million | :02:54. | :03:00.
epic. He has left his fingerprints on it. Yes, it is a huge monster | :03:01. | :03:05.
franchise movie, it has also got loads of very slight jokes in it. I | :03:06. | :03:12.
think there are a couple of references to cannibal Holocaust. I | :03:13. | :03:19.
like the fact that what he does is, he takes just Dean of liberties with | :03:20. | :03:22.
how far you can push the characters, but also remembers people are there | :03:23. | :03:29.
to see the monsters. One of the things that is most rewarding, when | :03:30. | :03:35.
you see King Kong, who is about 100 feet tall, we're not getting the | :03:36. | :03:40.
edit every quarter second that the Transformers movie does. It is | :03:41. | :03:45.
genuine beauty in these shots. Iconic image of King Kong rising up | :03:46. | :03:50.
in front of the sun. Tom Huddlestone with Sammy Rice soared. You can see | :03:51. | :03:57.
how camera is swelling and we're not getting the stupid fast edits that | :03:58. | :04:01.
have made this kind of cinema headache. What you always get is a | :04:02. | :04:06.
battle between the director and what they want, their personal vision and | :04:07. | :04:12.
what the producers want. It is who wins what battles. I think he won | :04:13. | :04:17.
more battles and he lost. I enjoyed it. I liked the jukebox soundtrack | :04:18. | :04:21.
and the other movies it references. I didn't get bored. There were | :04:22. | :04:28.
moments when I thought, wow, that is an impressive, enormous creature. I | :04:29. | :04:32.
enjoyed it much more than I expected to and I don't thing you have to | :04:33. | :04:37.
check your brain in. I didn't get bored, says Mark. The Love Which | :04:38. | :04:49.
where you board in that? No, the best way of describing this, imagine | :04:50. | :04:53.
all that haven't allows us directed by Jess Franco. It is in an age | :04:54. | :04:59.
where mobile phones exist yet it has this late 60s, early 70s theme | :05:00. | :05:05.
beyond the Valley of the dolls. It is a white which his spell all men | :05:06. | :05:15.
fall under. It is almost like a magical incantation and | :05:16. | :05:25.
extraordinary detail. The strange thing about it, a lot of the Wicker | :05:26. | :05:31.
man going on in the background. It is very funny. It is oddly sincere | :05:32. | :05:38.
in a way which you don't expect. It is subversive. I really enjoyed it. | :05:39. | :05:42.
I went in thinking I would be watching a parody and it was so much | :05:43. | :05:48.
more than that. I have met so many people who felt the same thing. They | :05:49. | :05:53.
thought it would be a bit camp and fun. It is more than that. Although | :05:54. | :05:59.
it is all of those things as well. Just looking at the pictures, I am a | :06:00. | :06:04.
bit worried it is not camp enough! Extraordinary. Interestingly, there | :06:05. | :06:12.
is a strange sincerity that underlines it. It is a very strange | :06:13. | :06:18.
movie and I liked it very much. The talking point of the week is Elle. | :06:19. | :06:23.
As a woman, I feel anxious about going to see it actually? I | :06:24. | :06:29.
understand that and I feel anxious having seen it. It can be read in | :06:30. | :06:34.
many different ways and all of them contradictory. It is a film of | :06:35. | :06:42.
sexual violence and has a track record of overstepping certain | :06:43. | :06:49.
lines. Isabel a pair, is cinema's most fearless screen presence. She | :06:50. | :06:56.
plays a businesswoman who is attacked at the beginning of the | :06:57. | :07:00.
film and an almost doesn't seem to respond. She will go to the police, | :07:01. | :07:05.
because as a child she was caught up in the arrest of her monstrous | :07:06. | :07:09.
father and was, in her mind betrayed by the police. Here is a clip. | :07:10. | :07:59.
She is so watchable, but I don't know if I have the stomach. Is it | :08:00. | :08:08.
very violent? I am lost for words. The director, based it on a novel. | :08:09. | :08:17.
It is almost as if the character becomes the author of the film. It | :08:18. | :08:21.
has been described as a black comedy, a social satire and rape | :08:22. | :08:27.
revenge movie. It is all and yet none of these things. What is is | :08:28. | :08:34.
nobody else other than this character could have done that. They | :08:35. | :08:40.
couldn't get the cast of the financing in America. She went on to | :08:41. | :08:45.
be nominated for an Oscar. She is brilliant in this and I think she is | :08:46. | :08:49.
brilliant in almost everything she is in. If it wasn't for the strength | :08:50. | :08:54.
of her performance, if it wasn't for the extraordinary way in which she | :08:55. | :09:00.
just dominates the screen, this would be a very different film. That | :09:01. | :09:04.
said, it is absolutely a film which is designed to wrong-foot you, which | :09:05. | :09:09.
is designed to make you feel uncomfortable. It has been | :09:10. | :09:13.
interesting see Billy McClure seemed the many different ways critics have | :09:14. | :09:17.
responded to it, trying to describe it. The best way to describe it, it | :09:18. | :09:23.
is an Isabel film, apart from the director. Moonlight, it is back in | :09:24. | :09:34.
the cinemas? It is back. It is such a marvellous work, a work of art and | :09:35. | :09:42.
I love it to pieces. DVD for anyone staying in. We have Logan. Doctor | :09:43. | :09:50.
strange, what would you do with a superhero movie if you make the kind | :09:51. | :09:55.
of film Ken Russell would make. Watching Doctor strange, Benedict | :09:56. | :10:00.
Cumberbatch as a neurosurgeon that gets pulled into this strange world. | :10:01. | :10:07.
Sometimes you think it is an outtake of altered States. I love the | :10:08. | :10:12.
hallucinogenic weirdness, but in cinemas, they take Logan completely | :10:13. | :10:16.
the other way. It is almost not a superhero movie. Looking at Doctor | :10:17. | :10:24.
strange, it is a superhero movie and we can be as psychedelic as we like. | :10:25. | :10:29.
It is an interesting double bill. Thanks very much, as ever. | :10:30. | :10:32.
