Hello and welcome to The One Show with Matt Baker. And with Alex away | :00:20. | :00:25.
sailing on her Sport Relief challenge, it is welcome board to | :00:26. | :00:31.
Fearne Cotton! Lovely to see you. It has been a year, so it is about | :00:32. | :00:36.
time. Tonight, we will bring you the latest on the Hell on High Seas team | :00:37. | :00:42.
in a moment. They are setting sail from Belfast first thing this | :00:43. | :00:45.
morning am looking bright and cheerful. But are they now? Very | :00:46. | :00:54.
choppy seas. Now, one thing is for certain - they are going to be very | :00:55. | :00:58.
cold and wet, so they are wearing appropriate wet weather gear. Which | :00:59. | :01:02.
is something our guest tonight knows all about. After all, she's the | :01:03. | :01:07.
greatest mac detective since Columbo. Yes, the mac is back, and | :01:08. | :01:11.
it is worn by Vera's when the Blethyn! -- Brenda Blethyn! We have | :01:12. | :01:22.
it on good authority that while you are away filming for Vera, you have | :01:23. | :01:26.
come up with a brilliant way of keeping your partner at home | :01:27. | :01:32.
entertain, in the shape of Jack. Yes, Jack keeps Michael company. | :01:33. | :01:38.
Look at his little face! Isn't he adorable? A Cockapoo. How old is he? | :01:39. | :01:46.
Seven and a half months. We know your phone is full not only of | :01:47. | :01:49.
photos, but also footage of Jack, because you showed us this when you | :01:50. | :01:53.
were in make-up earlier and we had to share it. It is the cutest thing. | :01:54. | :02:05.
I am in love! Here's having his real moment on TV. -- he is having a real | :02:06. | :02:12.
moment. If we can't get in touch with Alex, we would go back to Jack. | :02:13. | :02:19.
Of course, Alex and the team, Doon, Ore, Hal, Suzi and Angellica, are | :02:20. | :02:23.
now 12 hours into their Hell on High Seas challenge. They are travelling | :02:24. | :02:27.
around the UK on a 65 foot yacht, taking on whatever the weather | :02:28. | :02:30.
throws at them. After a final two days learning the ropes in Belfast, | :02:31. | :02:34.
the training was over and it was time to wave goodbye to dry land. | :02:35. | :02:43.
Belfast, where this challenge begins. The boat is ready, but are | :02:44. | :02:49.
we? Lesson one. Boat familiarisation. First injury! | :02:50. | :02:59.
Simple tasks on board are nearly impossible. That is the toilet? All | :03:00. | :03:07.
dignity has gone out. Sleeping conditions are cramped. And most | :03:08. | :03:13.
things have to be done in the dark. It is so claustrophobic that I can | :03:14. | :03:18.
imagine if you are feeling a bit of colour it is the worst place to be. | :03:19. | :03:26.
For me, being quite OCD, I am worried that everyone will have | :03:27. | :03:31.
those little things that get them off colour a bit. It will be | :03:32. | :03:35.
interesting to see how we get on. To find out exactly what this is going | :03:36. | :03:39.
to be like, the following day, we go out for a practice sale. | :03:40. | :03:45.
And then suddenly, the boat went like that. We are all getting used | :03:46. | :03:56.
to walking and hanging on at that level. It is extraordinary, and you | :03:57. | :04:00.
feel tentative to start with. And then before you know it, you are | :04:01. | :04:05.
just wandering around, doing stuff. It is mentally tiring. The sales are | :04:06. | :04:09.
incredibly heavy, and you are having to keep going. It is about mind over | :04:10. | :04:15.
matter and just digging deep. Everybody is already apprehensive | :04:16. | :04:19.
about this risky challenge. And there are some very scary news. This | :04:20. | :04:27.
line is telling us that the waves will be around ten metres. So if | :04:28. | :04:32.
anything goes wrong, we will get caught in a bad situation. That is | :04:33. | :04:39.
why we have decided to rule out the north and go to the south. Following | :04:40. | :04:44.
a late briefing on Sunday, Gonzalo believes we could outrun the | :04:45. | :04:50.
approaching weather front. We want to pass that point just before the | :04:51. | :04:55.
storm comes. And we have a good safety margin. 7am. We leave Belfast | :04:56. | :05:01.
on a race to reach Land's End before the boat breaking weather. This is | :05:02. | :05:08.
it. My body is aching from the work we did on the boat yesterday, and it | :05:09. | :05:12.
is all becoming a reality now. I am incredibly nervous, and a bit | :05:13. | :05:18.
worried. If everybody gets behind this, we will raise a lot of money. | :05:19. | :05:22.
That is important, so cross your fingers for us. Time to go. The | :05:23. | :05:31.
sleeping conditions are horrific. That has haunted you. That and the | :05:32. | :05:36.
toilets. I can't deal with that. Let's give you an idea of where they | :05:37. | :05:42.
are so far. We have this map and we will just zoom in and tell you, for | :05:43. | :05:47.
all you GPS nerds, latitude is 53 degrees, 44.67 minutes more. Longer | :05:48. | :05:54.
to decide degrees, 12.90 minutes west. Currently travelling at seven | :05:55. | :06:02.
knots. That is the competitive bit. We are hoping that we will be able | :06:03. | :06:06.
to talk to Alex live on the yacht a bit later in the show. Just what she | :06:07. | :06:13.
needs. Brenda, Alex and the crew are doing all that this for Sport | :06:14. | :06:18.
Relief. How can people at home help? To support the Hell on High Seas | :06:19. | :06:21.
challenge, you can donate ?5. And here is one of the reasons why | :06:22. | :06:57.
we are asking for your donations. In Bangladesh, a huge number of | :06:58. | :07:00.
children are out on the streets with no roof over their heads and little | :07:01. | :07:05.
chance of a decent education. Your money can help change that, and a | :07:06. | :07:08.
few weeks ago, Alex went to see it in action. | :07:09. | :07:16.
Dhaka, Bangladesh, a riot of colour, chaos and car horns. It is | :07:17. | :07:24.
absolutely manic here. There are people everywhere, beeping their | :07:25. | :07:27.
horns. And there is no system. Everybody just goes for it. Nearly | :07:28. | :07:36.
16 million call back home. Among them, a staggering one Million St | :07:37. | :07:42.
children. They live and work anywhere they can. Many have fled | :07:43. | :07:46.
poverty or physical abuse, and have been orphaned or abandoned. Hello! I | :07:47. | :07:57.
am Alex. Shohag and Bilal have agreed to show me their world. Where | :07:58. | :08:02.
do you live here? Where do you sleep? TRANSLATION: I sleep | :08:03. | :08:10.
sometimes in the field, or the bazaar area next to the town hall. | :08:11. | :08:17.
And sometimes industry. -- in the street. How long have you been | :08:18. | :08:20.
living near the town hall? TRANSLATION: Three years. Three | :08:21. | :08:27.
years? Bilal tells me that his parents tragically died in a road | :08:28. | :08:31.
accident, and Shohag that he fled here because his parents beat him. | :08:32. | :08:35.
With no one to look after them, they can only survive on the streets by | :08:36. | :08:41.
collecting rubbish to sell. TRANSLATION: We wake up early in the | :08:42. | :08:44.
morning to pick bottles and rubbish from the street, and then go to the | :08:45. | :08:50.
shops and sell it. Litter picking is dangerous work. Danger lurks in the | :08:51. | :08:54.
form of sharp objects and human waste. This is absolutely shocking. | :08:55. | :09:02.
It's like the dirtiest place in the world, all these flies. And these | :09:03. | :09:06.
poor children are having to make a living by climbing on top of all | :09:07. | :09:13.
this. It is just horrible. It is strange, because within ten minutes | :09:14. | :09:17.
of doing this, you find yourself trying to look for useful bits of | :09:18. | :09:20.
rubbish for them, like an empty packet of tablets or a bottle of | :09:21. | :09:26.
water, empty packet of crisps, polystyrene cartons. All of these | :09:27. | :09:31.
are gold to them. The rubbish, once collected, has to be weighed and | :09:32. | :09:42.
sold. But it's not for much. 30 taka? I am bartering with something | :09:43. | :09:45.
I don't understand, but they are saying 20? 30? 27 taka, the | :09:46. | :09:53.
equivalent of 27p. That is all he has to survive on until this time | :09:54. | :10:01.
tomorrow. Like many street children, Shohag and Bilal have aspirations | :10:02. | :10:06.
for a better life, which is why they attend this drop-in centre, funded | :10:07. | :10:10.
by Sport Relief. It provides a safe place for three Hundred St children | :10:11. | :10:14.
every day, where they can have a wash, get a meal and an education. | :10:15. | :10:21.
Let me give you a little tour of this lovely centre. In here, the | :10:22. | :10:25.
children have an opportunity to have some education, and it is packed. | :10:26. | :10:29.
They really want to learn. This is the washroom, so they can at least | :10:30. | :10:34.
clean themselves once a day. And then the counselling room, where | :10:35. | :10:37.
they can off-load and talk about their loneliness and feeling | :10:38. | :10:44.
vulnerable. It is here, though, that the children get what they probably | :10:45. | :10:47.
need the most, sleep in a safe, quiet place. I will remember this | :10:48. | :11:00.
site for a really long time. Absolutely shattered. They are only | :11:01. | :11:07.
ten. Can you imagine, if you're -- if your tenure of the sleeping here | :11:08. | :11:10.
like they are now and that is the only rest they have here all day -- | :11:11. | :11:15.
your tenure. And if it wasn't for the shelter, they wouldn't have | :11:16. | :11:21.
anything. Sadly, in its current capacity, the centre has to close at | :11:22. | :11:25.
5pm, so Shohag and his friends have to go back out onto the streets. | :11:26. | :11:31.
Without the help of Sport Relief, centres like this struggle to remain | :11:32. | :11:36.
open at all. Just ?5 can buy much-needed textbooks to help with | :11:37. | :11:41.
the children's education. ?10 can provide a nutritional meal for up to | :11:42. | :11:46.
50 children. With your help, we can try to give these children a better | :11:47. | :11:52.
life. The hardest thing for us to do tonight will be leaving them. But I | :11:53. | :11:56.
am just going to sit here for a little bit longer. | :11:57. | :12:11.
You can absolutely understand why Alex is out there, doing what she is | :12:12. | :12:16.
doing and pushing herself to the limit. In comparison, goodness me. | :12:17. | :12:23.
And that ?10 bid is 50 children. Thank goodness for that centre, so | :12:24. | :12:27.
they can rest and have that bit of safety. If you can donate, please | :12:28. | :12:36.
do. It is a world away, but we are now going to talk about | :12:37. | :12:39.
Northumberland and your series, Vera, which has come to the end of | :12:40. | :12:43.
its sixth series. We start series seven in June. It is wonderful. And | :12:44. | :12:51.
it has sold to so many countries. 130 different countries, we were | :12:52. | :12:55.
reading. This week, I had a letter. One day, I had a letter from | :12:56. | :12:59.
Australia, Canada, from America, from Belgium and I think from | :13:00. | :13:04.
Sweden, all in one post. Goodness me! And we have a Swede in the house | :13:05. | :13:15.
tonight! You could have delivered that letter yourself! What do you | :13:16. | :13:19.
put that popularity down to? I just think she is kind of so ordinary. | :13:20. | :13:24.
She is down to earth. She is not a threat to anybody. She doesn't rely | :13:25. | :13:28.
on lipstick, and she doesn't look like she has just walked off the | :13:29. | :13:31.
catwalk. Although some might think she has. She is very on trend with | :13:32. | :13:36.
that mac. If you haven't seen Vera, here is a moment that sums her up to | :13:37. | :13:43.
a T. Can I ask you, where were you on Saturday? Afternoon? Here. | :13:44. | :13:49.
Evening, we had a fundraising benefit. Why? J! I am having none of | :13:50. | :13:57.
that. Get out of the way. I am not going anyway. Put down the knife. | :13:58. | :14:08.
Make you feel better, will it, after a long spell inside? That is where | :14:09. | :14:11.
you will be going if you so much as touch him with that nice. -- with | :14:12. | :14:19.
that night. You do not mess with Vera. What we didn't see in that | :14:20. | :14:27.
clip is the cinematic, beautiful scenery in every episode. And the | :14:28. | :14:30.
Northumberland tourist board love you, because interest goes up 44% | :14:31. | :14:36.
when Vera is on TV. That is terrific, isn't it? Do you get | :14:37. | :14:41.
tourists coming to watch you filming? Yes, and the local people | :14:42. | :14:44.
sometimes bring out the chairs and the wine. They say, join us! I say, | :14:45. | :14:54.
I can't, I have to drive that Land Rover! The generosity and the | :14:55. | :15:00.
welcome we get is wonderful. You spend a lot of your year there, five | :15:01. | :15:06.
months. Do you end up staying in the same place? Have you got a second | :15:07. | :15:09.
home up there? For the first three years, I was in a hotel. But then | :15:10. | :15:16.
all I wanted to do was boil an egg. So the last two years, I have had an | :15:17. | :15:23.
apartment. That works out better. So then you are going to go back and do | :15:24. | :15:27.
series seven? At the end of May, I go back. Take the dog this time. | :15:28. | :15:32.
Well, I got him for Michael, although he might begin to see the | :15:33. | :15:34.
back of him. Although this has been sold in 130 | :15:35. | :15:44.
countries, it is not watch your most recognise for? I made a television | :15:45. | :15:52.
series, it must be 30 years ago, called Chance In A Million, with | :15:53. | :15:57.
Simon Callow. Look at that sultry look! The cheekbones. I am | :15:58. | :16:04.
recognised all over the place. I was in a cave in Australia, and someone | :16:05. | :16:11.
said, weren't you in Chance In 1 Million? And also in the jungle in | :16:12. | :16:17.
Borneo? Chance In A Million! Since you were last on The One Show you | :16:18. | :16:24.
have had a birthday. Yes I turned 70. What did you do? I went to | :16:25. | :16:28.
aspire and took myself away from everyone. -- I went to a spa. So, | :16:29. | :16:39.
what is next for you? It seems like you have done so much. Everything. | :16:40. | :16:46.
Series seven starts at the end of May, as I say. Before that, I'm | :16:47. | :16:50.
doing an excerpt for a film with a director friend of mine. And a | :16:51. | :16:58.
celebration of Ed now Brian's work in Dublin next month, in the theatre | :16:59. | :17:02.
there for one night. I am looking forward to it. -- Edna O'Brien. I am | :17:03. | :17:10.
looking forward to revisiting it. So a lot of workers going into one | :17:11. | :17:15.
night. Yes, I'm looking forward to it. You have worked with so many | :17:16. | :17:18.
amazing people, is there anyone still on your list that you would | :17:19. | :17:22.
just love to work with? There's lots of people. Lots of people I work | :17:23. | :17:27.
with become friends. I was with Kevin Whately today at an event for | :17:28. | :17:35.
the Princes trust. It was so nice to see him. Timothy Spall, I like | :17:36. | :17:42.
working with. I've never had much ambition, to tell you the truth. | :17:43. | :17:47.
I've been quite fortunate. When you set out on this road, if you don't | :17:48. | :17:52.
have that path planned, it almost goes better for you. We're going to | :17:53. | :17:57.
take you way back to what you think, tellers of we're right, is your | :17:58. | :18:03.
first TV appearance. You said we would stick together. Would you like | :18:04. | :18:09.
to be a special operator, to? You must be joking. Picture me being | :18:10. | :18:13.
special. It is as much as I can do to keep ordinary. It was my first | :18:14. | :18:21.
drama, yes. I think it was The Imitation Game, by Ian McEwan. We | :18:22. | :18:26.
were saying, you haven't changed a bit. We're going to chat to your | :18:27. | :18:36.
little bit later on, Brenda. Series six of Vera is out on DVD and | :18:37. | :18:38.
download now. The Six Nations returns this | :18:39. | :18:40.
weekend, but it's not the only big Doctors are urging the Government | :18:41. | :18:43.
to make it a non-contact sport So, is a ban on tackling | :18:44. | :18:47.
really necessary? Well, not according to a school | :18:48. | :18:50.
in Somerset, who think they've come Rugby has never been for the | :18:51. | :19:05.
faint-hearted. With such a physical game, injuries are inevitable. Right | :19:06. | :19:10.
now, within the sport, there is one particular injury that is causing | :19:11. | :19:14.
everybody a major headache - concussion. More than 70 doctors and | :19:15. | :19:21.
academics are calling for a ban on tackling in schools across the UK | :19:22. | :19:25.
because they are seeing too many injuries, and not just broken bones. | :19:26. | :19:32.
Concussion occurs when the head is jolted so hard that the brain | :19:33. | :19:36.
strikes the inside of the skull. Short term after effects can include | :19:37. | :19:40.
blurred vision and loss of memory. But there is evidence that repeated | :19:41. | :19:47.
episodes of concussion could cause long-term problems, possibly even | :19:48. | :19:50.
triggering dementia. Tackling concussion is now a priority for the | :19:51. | :19:57.
rugby authorities. Just take a look across the pond. In American | :19:58. | :20:01.
football, the NFL is set to pay out one million dollars in pay-outs to | :20:02. | :20:06.
players who have suffered concussion. Will Smith has just made | :20:07. | :20:11.
a film about it. Repetitive head trauma chokes the brain and turns | :20:12. | :20:18.
you into someone else. Back here, and in schoolboy rugby, one teacher | :20:19. | :20:21.
has decided to tackle concussion head-on. Former first-class | :20:22. | :20:31.
cricketer Evan Jones thinks he is seeing too many head injuries. There | :20:32. | :20:37.
were 20 injuries in our school this year. That sounds a lot. Our nurses | :20:38. | :20:42.
brought it to our attention, and I thought, enough is enough, let's do | :20:43. | :20:50.
something. Stephan has imported a radical approach from New Zealand. | :20:51. | :20:54.
He thinks he can reduce injuries by devoting kids into teams by weight | :20:55. | :21:01.
rather than by age. If you have a big fellow bashing into a smaller | :21:02. | :21:07.
fellow, it is like a car crash if the headers in the wrong place. | :21:08. | :21:10.
Stephan says that kicking into touch has meant that proposing a ban has | :21:11. | :21:17.
met with resistance. We have gone to a school in Wales to see if it will | :21:18. | :21:25.
work. Can he persuade them to buy into the ban? Instead of being | :21:26. | :21:30.
sorted by age group, the boys are being sorted by weight. This is them | :21:31. | :21:36.
in their usual groups, but it is all change when sorted by weight. And | :21:37. | :21:41.
evenly matched bunch of players are now ready to play. Let's make it our | :21:42. | :21:50.
three nations event. These players have experienced numerous | :21:51. | :21:56.
concussions. The longer I play, the more dinks and knocks you get. It | :21:57. | :22:04.
was very much a case of sucking it up and getting on with it, the match | :22:05. | :22:10.
side of the game where you had to get back into it not to let your | :22:11. | :22:15.
team-mates down. John's concussions have had a lasting effect. My | :22:16. | :22:23.
cognitive abilities, communicating, there have been aspects of | :22:24. | :22:26.
depression there, issues with headaches a loss of memory. Among | :22:27. | :22:33.
those teaming up to investigate the effects of concussion are lead | :22:34. | :22:40.

Researchers are also looking for markers in the blood that might in | :22:44. | :22:46.
ticket -- indicate a brain injury. It is early days, but a clinical | :22:47. | :22:53.
researcher hopes that in time they can develop a quick and easy test | :22:54. | :22:57.
for concussion. We need more information about the subject and | :22:58. | :23:02.
additional clinical tools that we can use to diagnose a concussion in | :23:03. | :23:06.
a much more robust manner than we do at the moment. The veterans may be | :23:07. | :23:12.
all for it, but back at the school, the ban has still got our way to go | :23:13. | :23:18.
to get converts. If you are playing in your age group, I think it is | :23:19. | :23:22.
more of a challenge. Sometimes, it can be more fun, because you do have | :23:23. | :23:29.
the bigger boys to tackle. I want to play it as we normally play, because | :23:30. | :23:35.
it develop skill as well. You can play against boys bigger than you. | :23:36. | :23:42.
This is something that has got a lot of people talking. We contacted the | :23:43. | :23:47.
Department of Education. They said: Team sports are important to help | :23:48. | :23:54.
children develop positive traits such as leadership and how to bounce | :23:55. | :23:59.
back from defeat. We are aware of the risk and we want to provide a | :24:00. | :24:03.
safe environment for pupils. There is expert advice available for | :24:04. | :24:06.
schools to make sure that sporting activities are safe and to reduce | :24:07. | :24:10.
the risk of injuries and accidents. So it sounds like they are going to | :24:11. | :24:13.
carry on as it is. It seems that way. | :24:14. | :24:15.
And if you are a parent or player looking for advice on how to spot | :24:16. | :24:19.
the symptoms of concussion - or advice on how to treat it - | :24:20. | :24:22.
Brenda, is this something that concerns you? I don't have any | :24:23. | :24:33.
children who play rough sports. I have got a couple of nephews, great | :24:34. | :24:40.
nephews, who play football. I think there is too much concerned with | :24:41. | :24:44.
health and safety, really. I had a window cleaner at the other day who | :24:45. | :24:48.
wouldn't do the upstairs. A window cleaner that wouldn't go up a | :24:49. | :24:54.
ladder? Its health and safety! I don't know the statistics. -- it is | :24:55. | :25:05.
health and safety. But perhaps protective clothing would be right. | :25:06. | :25:08.
At ladder this window cleaner! Nearly time to catch up | :25:09. | :25:12.
with Alex on the yacht. Before we do, here's just a reminder | :25:13. | :25:14.
of how you can donate to Sport Relief and support | :25:15. | :25:17.
the Hell On High Seas challenge. To donate ?5, text | :25:18. | :25:20.

or to donate whatever you want - Now, let's see how the team | :25:42. | :25:44.
are coping after the first day. We managed to grab a few words with | :25:45. | :25:55.
Alex, obviously in very rough conditions. | :25:56. | :26:00.
I love your hair, Brenda. The boat is at a 45 degrees angle, so moving | :26:01. | :26:03.
around is very difficult and very dangerous. At the minute, that is | :26:04. | :26:13.
why I am at this angle now. As you can see, the weather really turned, | :26:14. | :26:17.
and three hours ago, the wind really picked up, and now the boat is on | :26:18. | :26:24.
its keel, at a 45 degrees angle. Here is our skipper, our boss for | :26:25. | :26:28.
the week, Ian. You predicted the weather front was coming in, so tell | :26:29. | :26:34.
us a bit about what is going on. We have 20 knots of wind. The air | :26:35. | :26:38.
temperature is about six Celsius, so it will be a chilly night. It has | :26:39. | :26:42.
just gone dark, so we're prepared for a bit more wind. The wind will | :26:43. | :26:49.
head to the west, we think. You said tomorrow was going to be the day | :26:50. | :26:52.
when we would need to be really careful. Tomorrow, it will gradually | :26:53. | :26:57.
build through the day, but it should be champion sailing. It should be | :26:58. | :27:10.
fast downwind. Cheers, Ian. There you are. It is absolutely rough here | :27:11. | :27:14.
at the minute, absolute chaos, but I will hopefully see you again | :27:15. | :27:18.
tomorrow, when things are a bit calmer, fingers crossed! | :27:19. | :27:26.
APPLAUSE Keep your fingers in those clubs, | :27:27. | :27:30.
because it is going to be absolutely freezing tonight. I just had a | :27:31. | :27:34.
reminder. There she is on the map, just south of the Isle of Man. It is | :27:35. | :27:42.
four hours on an four hours for every crewmember. They have to sleep | :27:43. | :27:45.
on the boat, go to the toilet on the boat, and they are on it till | :27:46. | :27:50.
Friday. Believable. You can follow Alex's progress live on a website. | :27:51. | :27:56.
Just follow the link on there and you'll get | :27:57. | :27:59.
all the latest news, photos and more. | :28:00. | :28:02.
Talking of awful weather conditions, I am sure you have filmed in awful | :28:03. | :28:09.
conditions filming Vera. You can have every season in one day in | :28:10. | :28:13.
Northumberland. Do you have to cancel filming if it gets so bad? If | :28:14. | :28:18.
it's really bad, yes, we do. We have to go to the pub or somewhere! We're | :28:19. | :28:25.
talking about physical challenges. You have done, is it three | :28:26. | :28:34.
marathons? Yes, three London Marathons for children with | :28:35. | :28:38.
leukaemia. I hated the training, and I would pretend I wasn't in when the | :28:39. | :28:45.
trainer turned up. But he would call through the letterbox, I know you're | :28:46. | :28:50.
in their! Brenda, thank you for being on the shore. Vera is on DVD | :28:51. | :28:55.
now. Thank you to you as well, Fearne. | :28:56. | :29:01.
Tomorrow Konnie Huq will be here with Rebecca Front. | :29:02. | :29:03. |
