How do I turn an ordinary Friday into a really spectacular one? What | :00:10. | :00:16.
I need is a co-presenter. Someone unfunny, maybe Canadian, but not to | :00:17. | :00:20.
Canadian... Oh look there's | :00:21. | :00:23.
Katharine Ryan, get in! Thank you so much Kala Kala, | :00:24. | :00:25.
enjoy Pride this weekend. Welcome to the One Show | :00:26. | :00:48.
with Katharine Ryan. And look who we picked | :00:49. | :00:50.
up round the corner, everyone's favourite; the frequently | :00:51. | :00:59.
misspelled Mel Geidroyc! There we go. We have got three more | :01:00. | :01:04.
sisters with us. Performing for us later ST, | :01:05. | :01:11.
Danielle and Alana Hime! CHEERING | :01:12. | :01:23.
And if you haven't heard Haim before, this is what you can expect | :01:24. | :01:27.
later tonight. # Just know that I want you | :01:28. | :01:44.
# Just know that I want to you... #. How did your sisters treat you? | :01:45. | :01:48.
Extremely bossy! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :01:49. | :02:01.
A few men that. Sit down, well,! Listen, first things first, I hope | :02:02. | :02:05.
it's OK, Friday evening, I've got the sliders on, is that OK? Very big | :02:06. | :02:18.
thing these days. Yes, Stormzy. I have a pair, of course I have. They | :02:19. | :02:23.
are bejewelled. We saw an amazing picture of Catherine in a meeting, | :02:24. | :02:27.
it's worth sharing with you, you will love it! A sisters episode and | :02:28. | :02:35.
it turns out I am in the original Haim. It is like children's dynasty. | :02:36. | :02:44.
I don't get how it's weird, biggest hair equals best sister! Did you do | :02:45. | :02:50.
your hat was it like that? My mother forced a lot of things upon us on | :02:51. | :02:55.
this is one example. But it turned out OK, right? Yeah. We have an | :02:56. | :03:01.
update on the One Show mobile phone plan we have spoken about each week. | :03:02. | :03:09.
Yes, a Snapchat message has come in from "DD". | :03:10. | :03:11.
He says, "I chair political discussion programmes on the BBC | :03:12. | :03:13.
but my phone addiction is getting in the way of my work." | :03:14. | :03:16.
There was a fork in the road and we opted for one fork. Now we are all | :03:17. | :03:21.
going down that fork and it's time for bed... LAUGHTER | :03:22. | :03:30.
This is my stopwatch saying it's bedtime! It would have been amazing | :03:31. | :03:38.
if he got up and walked off. Got to respect the alarm. Details of the | :03:39. | :03:43.
phone plan will be revealed next Thursday. Our musical guest Haim are | :03:44. | :03:48.
celebrating their tenth anniversary today. | :03:49. | :03:57.
of our greatest artists, David Hockney, turns 80. | :03:58. | :03:59.
Andy has been to the great man's birthplace of Bradford to find | :04:00. | :04:02.
out how they are going to be celebrating. | :04:03. | :04:04.
In the R word it's the artist to make a difference, the interesting | :04:05. | :04:09.
things happen when they rip up the book. I voice had a bit of an | :04:10. | :04:13.
affinity with those mavericks and here in Bradford there is a local | :04:14. | :04:16.
artists keeping up that fine tradition of breaking all the rules. | :04:17. | :04:21.
These ambitious images are the work of Marcus Levine. Each one has been | :04:22. | :04:24.
made using nothing more than a hammer and nails, but can sell for | :04:25. | :04:30.
upwards of ?40,000. What is the attraction of using nails as a | :04:31. | :04:35.
medium? It just sort of came to me that actually, if I could use the | :04:36. | :04:40.
nails to describe the human body you would have the 11, this wow factor | :04:41. | :04:45.
of suddenly realising it was nails followed by the fact they are hard | :04:46. | :04:48.
and angular but probably soft and sinewy. | :04:49. | :04:56.
This is Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface. Did Al Pacino ever get to | :04:57. | :05:01.
see the original sculpture customer yes, I said, just stand back for a | :05:02. | :05:06.
second, it's all done with nails. He went, that's amazing! | :05:07. | :05:11.
Markers can use up to 50,000 nails to create a single piece, and they | :05:12. | :05:16.
can weigh between 30-40 kg each. It's not for the faint hearted. He | :05:17. | :05:22.
has to wear protective goggles to shield him from any flying nails and | :05:23. | :05:26.
he does it all without gloves. My son, it hurts when I hit. Most of | :05:27. | :05:30.
the time I can just ignore the pain now. This thumb is basically dead to | :05:31. | :05:37.
the sensation. I would have to really smack it to stop working. | :05:38. | :05:43.
Next, Marcus has been commissioned to do a portrait of and closer to | :05:44. | :05:47.
home. I've been keeping it secret for over a year and finally I can | :05:48. | :05:52.
breathe a sigh of relief and say, it's a portrait of David Hockney. | :05:53. | :05:58.
David Hockney is one of the most influential artists alive today. | :05:59. | :06:02.
He's a Bradford boy, born and bred, and in order to celebrate his | :06:03. | :06:06.
upcoming 80th birthday, a local community group has asked Marcus to | :06:07. | :06:10.
create attribute of which the whole city can be proud. I wanted to take | :06:11. | :06:15.
parts of all of these different photos of Hockney to create what | :06:16. | :06:21.
looks like a Polaroid, which is a whole marsh to Hockney's work but | :06:22. | :06:26.
done in nails. The first coloured nail sculpture in the world, a | :06:27. | :06:31.
totally new technique I've created. As part of this new approach, Marcus | :06:32. | :06:37.
spray paints hundreds of nails at a time, to create different colour | :06:38. | :06:42.
effects in the finished work. Go on then, Andy. Am I having a go? Where | :06:43. | :06:48.
do I put it? In that same line there. | :06:49. | :06:52.
How about that? Not bad, not bad at all. You have a job! | :06:53. | :07:01.
The huge pieces being installed in the little Germany area of Bradford | :07:02. | :07:05.
and will be officially unveiled ahead of David's birthday this | :07:06. | :07:11.
Sunday. And it's not just a case of mailing it to the wall. With the | :07:12. | :07:15.
panels in place, it's possible to see the whole work come together for | :07:16. | :07:19.
the first time, and I'm not the only one who thinks he's nailed it! It's | :07:20. | :07:24.
very impressive, very impressive. Up until this moment, we didn't realise | :07:25. | :07:29.
it was made from nails. Absolutely brilliant for Bradford, this. But | :07:30. | :07:37.
there's one person just itching to see the finished thing. Are you | :07:38. | :07:46.
nervous? I am. Are you please? I am, best birthday present ever. Is it | :07:47. | :07:50.
your birthday today? Yes. Happy birthday! As you get underneath I | :07:51. | :07:57.
noticed the frame of his spectacles actually stand out. I'm still a bit | :07:58. | :08:03.
in shock, actually. I've never seen them all together. I have still got | :08:04. | :08:06.
goose bumps! That was amazing. Can't believe it, | :08:07. | :08:16.
never seen anything like that. And we should say happy birthday to | :08:17. | :08:24.
Katherine. Happy birthday this Sunday, David, but yes, I was born | :08:25. | :08:28.
once. This year my dad's card to me has kind of gone viral in the United | :08:29. | :08:33.
States, because he crosses out the passage he feels doesn't apply to | :08:34. | :08:38.
me. I love the spirit of you... He's crossed out the grace with which. | :08:39. | :08:42.
This about childhood wonder, not applicable to me. And most of all, a | :08:43. | :08:47.
load of stuff crossed out here about empathy and friendship. I guess it's | :08:48. | :08:51.
pretty clear I love... Almost crossed out everything about me. | :08:52. | :08:58.
Thanks, dad, thanks. Marvellous! I blame the state of parenting. Less | :08:59. | :09:04.
lines crossed out, you can work on it. Now, we have seen you are most | :09:05. | :09:14.
shows on BBC Mel. You and your sliders. Do you have chosen them? | :09:15. | :09:19.
No, but in the autumn I will be wearing these with a sock! Trendy, | :09:20. | :09:28.
Alex and Katherine. Am not sure. You can wear them on your new show | :09:29. | :09:33.
Letter Box because you are behind a podium. I did, every single time we | :09:34. | :09:39.
felt I was in these shoes behind the aforementioned Letter Box. That is | :09:40. | :09:43.
an exclusive here about Letter Box, which starts on the 17th of July on | :09:44. | :09:49.
BBC Two. Good. Tell us about it. It's basically a really fun and | :09:50. | :09:54.
addictive and fiendish. You don't have to be a massive old quiz head | :09:55. | :09:57.
to get involved. It's one of those shows. You have to try and guess | :09:58. | :10:04.
words to crack the aforementioned letterbox, which is an actual box | :10:05. | :10:08.
that has smoke coming out. When you win, smoke comes out and it rises up | :10:09. | :10:16.
like one of those old organs of old... LAUGHTER | :10:17. | :10:21.
Like people playing the piano and you crack the password. How would | :10:22. | :10:27.
you describe it in three words? Crack the password. Very good! I | :10:28. | :10:32.
have four words for you, let's have a look! No idea... Come on, come on, | :10:33. | :10:45.
come on! Can I have a N please? Have we got a letter end? Yes. Now, | :10:46. | :10:59.
Lydia. Two still to go. S, please. Have we got a S in this country? We | :11:00. | :11:07.
haven't. Vicky... Get the air in. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :11:08. | :11:14.
It didn't tell us the answer! I think it was Jordan. You couldn't | :11:15. | :11:19.
give the answer, that was supposed to be a cliffhanger. You will host | :11:20. | :11:22.
this show! I never know what the words are going to be, they don't | :11:23. | :11:27.
tell me with the earpiece trickery so I can play along, much more fun. | :11:28. | :11:32.
Honestly, it gets so tense. We loved the contestants. Janet and Lydia are | :11:33. | :11:43.
the new Mel and Sue. They met and became firm friends through driving. | :11:44. | :11:46.
One of them was the instructor to the other and they became best | :11:47. | :11:51.
friends. I wouldn't... I wouldn't have made best friends with my | :11:52. | :11:55.
driving instructor, would you? Definitely not! Know. Let's do | :11:56. | :12:01.
favourite words. You have some weird ones. I like jiggery-pokery a lot. A | :12:02. | :12:13.
made up word. Not at all, I think it has a hyphen, under Ward | :12:14. | :12:24.
behaviour... Or if you are cheating. Your favourite letter? V. Mine as | :12:25. | :12:31.
well. Simple but enigmatic. Let's do least favourite word? Tissue. I | :12:32. | :12:42.
don't like it when people pronounce it tiss-oo. I'm having a funny | :12:43. | :12:52.
thing. I don't like moist. A big favour of hated words, an aversion | :12:53. | :13:01.
to words. Moist. Moist. Tiss-oo. A moist tissue. They sell tissues in | :13:02. | :13:11.
those packets. And another word, panites. I think we need to move on, | :13:12. | :13:18.
this is getting weird. Are you competitive by nature? Totally. With | :13:19. | :13:26.
games like Christmas. Sherrard 's, the hacked game and a totally. | :13:27. | :13:33.
That's the game, why a play otherwise? I am not competitive. | :13:34. | :13:39.
Argue not? Well, the question is ladies, thanks for prompting! How | :13:40. | :13:44.
competitive are you? Fancy having a game that playing Letter Box | :13:45. | :13:51.
Witherspoon? This is like we are on the real show! I have to get into | :13:52. | :13:56.
character. Can you serve them does not solve the mystery Word and crack | :13:57. | :13:58.
open the letterbox? Let's see... I Alex Jones you go first. Pick one | :13:59. | :14:10.
letter. If you get it wrong it goes to Katherine. I'll go for A. Have we | :14:11. | :14:18.
got an A here in the secret Letterbox? I'll go for an E, please. | :14:19. | :14:27.
Have we got an E... ? The hint is a strong title. Stays with Katherine. | :14:28. | :14:38.
An S, please. SFOR sugar. Yes. Yes! An R for Ronald. | :14:39. | :14:41.
She's on... F for flowers. No F. Back to you... | :14:42. | :14:56.
H! A tricky little letter. Yes. Well done! | :14:57. | :15:02.
Our house. Congratulations. Like Lydia and Janet. I didn't think | :15:03. | :15:15.
I was competitive, but I am. You have cracked open the Letterbox. | :15:16. | :15:19.
What's the prize? You can have a Slider! Victory and a Slider. They | :15:20. | :15:27.
don't suit my feet! Speaking of our house, our next film is about a make | :15:28. | :15:29.
over. If you have a scruffy neighbour in | :15:30. | :15:36.
your road, you will like this. Stunning end of bed property, | :15:37. | :15:47.
located in black heath, close to local amenities. I am sure this is | :15:48. | :15:52.
the street, but I can't seem to find it! Phil, over here, mate! Oh! So | :15:53. | :15:59.
this is the house I've come to see. All right! I knew it needed a little | :16:00. | :16:03.
bit of attention, but this is beyond a joke. You can't even see it. There | :16:04. | :16:08.
are overgrown trees, hedges and Ivy everywhere. I've got the keys. Let's | :16:09. | :16:15.
go and look. Here we are! Blimey! There's the kitchen. Crikey! It's | :16:16. | :16:21.
everywhere! There's the bathroom. It is even covering the windows and | :16:22. | :16:26.
it's coming inside. Here's the living room and there's the garden. | :16:27. | :16:32.
Or should I say "jungle! " This will be some job to clear thaul foliage. | :16:33. | :16:36.
So, Max, where do you start this sort of job? I am starting from the | :16:37. | :16:42.
ground and working my way up. A lot of growth in the brick work. Get the | :16:43. | :16:46.
growth out of the front taken away and work our way out of this. Does | :16:47. | :16:53.
overgrowth ruin a house? It does. It rips into the guttering and it can | :16:54. | :16:59.
cause serious damage. Ivy on brick walls in moderation can look | :17:00. | :17:03.
beautiful. It also has many other beneficial factors. It is a very | :17:04. | :17:10.
good insulating lawyer to keep the -- layer to keep the heat in. You | :17:11. | :17:14.
have to be careful and keep an eye on it. If you don't, the ivy reaches | :17:15. | :17:19.
the wooden parts of the house, be alert. So, Chris, you live next door | :17:20. | :17:23.
to the house, you must be delighted with the work going on. . It would | :17:24. | :17:26.
be nice to see sunshine for the first time in five years. How has it | :17:27. | :17:31.
affected your house and garden? It has been a problem with the ivy | :17:32. | :17:35.
taking over. Constantly clearing up leaves and the branches that fall | :17:36. | :17:39.
down. Did you know the previous owner? Yeah, I did. He was a bit of | :17:40. | :17:44.
a recluse, but sadly after Christmas he died. And now you are an estate | :17:45. | :17:52.
agent. Does it matter the state it is in, or is it all about location, | :17:53. | :17:56.
location, location? It is about what they have to spend on that to make | :17:57. | :17:59.
it liveable. It will be a lot of money. | :18:00. | :18:04.
Now, that looks like it's been there for years. You can see the damage | :18:05. | :18:08.
it's caused in the guttering at the top and into the lead roof over | :18:09. | :18:13.
there. Hopefully after pricing it away a bit it will start to go away | :18:14. | :18:17.
a bit. And hopefully the front of the house won't come down! Hopefully | :18:18. | :18:22.
not. The rest of the street have seen the cutting and trimming and | :18:23. | :18:25.
have taken an interest. What did you think of that lot? We didn't realise | :18:26. | :18:29.
it was a house when we first moved in. I am happy. It was getting | :18:30. | :18:35.
dangerous, branches would hit you in the face. This is it before the ivy | :18:36. | :18:40.
took over. Was it spooky when you walked past at night? Especially if | :18:41. | :18:46.
I was walking home at night-time. 20-plus years it has been like it. | :18:47. | :18:50.
We are all happy now. When I turned thup morning I knew it would be a | :18:51. | :18:53.
big job. Max and the boys have cracked on and it is amazing to see | :18:54. | :18:57.
the house coming back to live from under all that foliage. | :18:58. | :19:04.
Anded they den't get all -- and they didn't get all the ivy because there | :19:05. | :19:07.
were birdies in it. My daughter's favourite show is | :19:08. | :19:13.
Pitch Battle. What can we expect from this Saturday? This Saturday | :19:14. | :19:16.
will be intensely good. We have Seal! The artist? Is he | :19:17. | :19:31.
keeping it Seal! He is so Seal. What does that mean? I like to tell | :19:32. | :19:42.
people I am keeping it Seal! His hashtag is hashtagrealtalk. He is a | :19:43. | :19:49.
very, very good judge. It is on BBC One, Saturday, 7. 30pm, as always. | :19:50. | :19:54.
Let's see what we can look forward to. | :19:55. | :20:02.
# I never knew she could dance like this | :20:03. | :20:07.
# Speaks Spanish # Bonita | :20:08. | :20:13.
# Shakira # Shakira | :20:14. | :20:16.
# My head don't lie # Baby, let's go | :20:17. | :20:20.
# Real slow # Because baby this is per can | :20:21. | :20:24.
fecto! What's the favourite moment of the | :20:25. | :20:31.
series for you at the moment? Goodness! So many. Probably seeing | :20:32. | :20:39.
chukka chan coming on in the latter half of the show in a pair of | :20:40. | :20:46.
amazing, look at the E wok boots. Massive fur boots. Like half fancy | :20:47. | :20:51.
dress. I have never seen a boot as wide as that. Literally full fur, | :20:52. | :20:56.
sort of this wide. She came on... She can do it. She can pull it off. | :20:57. | :21:01.
You are obsessed with footwear, we have to say! I loved the episode | :21:02. | :21:07.
where you were beatboxing. I think you nailed it. Oh, dear! Oh, no! | :21:08. | :21:13.
Embarrassing! You said you fancied joining a Rock Choir. Will we see | :21:14. | :21:27.
you sing any time soon? I love the idea of being in a massive choir. I | :21:28. | :21:30.
love the idea of having a T-shirt that says the name of the choir. I | :21:31. | :21:35.
love that idea of belonging somewhere, with some people! I | :21:36. | :21:39.
genuinely do. I love being... Belonging! I love to be in a gang. | :21:40. | :21:47.
We hear you love Howard Jones. Ho-JO! A one-man band with spiky | :21:48. | :21:54.
hair supported by a crazy dancer wearing chains and not much else. | :21:55. | :22:02.
It sounds like a gimmick, performance art turned pop song, but | :22:03. | :22:08.
it took Howard Jones into the top ten and led to an international | :22:09. | :22:14.
career, with hits like What is Love. And like to get To Know You Well. If | :22:15. | :22:20.
he had taken his music teacher's criticism to heart here in High | :22:21. | :22:24.
Wycombe, it could have all turned out differently. They didn't want me | :22:25. | :22:29.
to music A level. I had long hair. I was a bit of a rebel. I didn't | :22:30. | :22:33.
really fit in. I did sciences instead. The great thing with that | :22:34. | :22:37.
is it made me more determined with my music. Despite the lack of | :22:38. | :22:43.
encouragement Howard studied music at college and started to perform | :22:44. | :22:47.
locally, funding it by working days in a factory. That's the factory I | :22:48. | :22:52.
worked in. I was rolling clingfilm every day into sheets. I was coming | :22:53. | :22:57.
home, recording all through the night. All the letters and demos I | :22:58. | :23:03.
sent out to people, I was getting rejections, hundreds. You keep | :23:04. | :23:06.
going. Did you tell your fellow workers what you were up to? I said | :23:07. | :23:11.
one day I will walk out of here and I will do my music and they kind of | :23:12. | :23:15.
humoured me and said, of course you will, Howard. One day, I did. | :23:16. | :23:20.
Finally getting record company interest, Howard started work on | :23:21. | :23:25.
what was to become New Song, inspired by his own struggles. I | :23:26. | :23:31.
used to come to the hill to reflect because it gave me perspective on | :23:32. | :23:35.
life. I am sure I was just about to get somewhere, you know. I wanted to | :23:36. | :23:38.
pour all that into the lyrics and say, I've been waiting for so long. | :23:39. | :23:41.
That is my sorry. That is my history. You know, I have been in | :23:42. | :23:47.
bands since I was 14. Got signed at 28. It all fits. I remember playing | :23:48. | :23:52.
it for the first time and my lovely, brilliant supporters they went | :23:53. | :23:56.
mental. I thought, this is going to be an important song for me. One of | :23:57. | :24:02.
Howard's supporters at the time, Jed, was instrumental in helping his | :24:03. | :24:07.
performances attract attention. Jed would dance in the audience, | :24:08. | :24:12.
amazingly. I couldn't keep my eyes off him. I had my own way of | :24:13. | :24:16.
interpreting what he was singing. People noticed it. That was the | :24:17. | :24:20.
point. I thought, this man belongs here with me. Let's do it. I loved | :24:21. | :24:24.
having Jed on stage with me. It was like a performance art thing. The | :24:25. | :24:29.
stage was covered with TV monitors, mannequins, which had names. It was | :24:30. | :24:34.
unpredictable, like, what's going to happen now? And what are those | :24:35. | :24:42.
chains about? What were they about He was imprisoned in his own mental | :24:43. | :24:48.
prison. And it really worked with the New Song lyrics. That was | :24:49. | :24:52.
brought into the video. The video very much was telling the story of | :24:53. | :24:56.
my journey, it started in the factory and then we went to a | :24:57. | :25:01.
school. I was on top of the desks, singing to the kids. Question what's | :25:02. | :25:04.
going on in your world. Think for yourself. When New Song was released | :25:05. | :25:12.
it was rocketed into the top ten following an appearance by Howard | :25:13. | :25:16.
and Jed on Top of the Pops. Jed worked with Howard for seven years | :25:17. | :25:20.
before they finally retired the costumes and the chains. Today, | :25:21. | :25:25.
Howard is back at his old school. He's come to perform for the pupils | :25:26. | :25:29.
and offer them advice. I used to attend this school. I then went on | :25:30. | :25:34.
to music college up in Manchester. When I came back to High Wycombe I | :25:35. | :25:38.
wanted to do my own music, so I came up with this idea for a song that | :25:39. | :25:43.
was about saying to people, don't be afraid to have a go. | :25:44. | :25:57.
# Coming now to sing this song. It may be a difficult journey and | :25:58. | :26:01.
you may have ups and downs on your way, but if you have something in | :26:02. | :26:06.
your heart unique to you, you have to go for it. | :26:07. | :26:13.
# Don't back up # See the sites | :26:14. | :26:20.
# Drive off your mental chains # Oh-oh-oh! | :26:21. | :26:27.
If that has whetted your appetite for music from Howard, like it has | :26:28. | :26:31.
