Hello and welcome to Birmingham for day five of the big short challenge!

:00:19.:00:25.

If you were watching last night, you would have seen Team Rickshaw leave

:00:26.:00:30.

Bolton, they have travelled 101 miles through the night, goodness

:00:31.:00:33.

me, and if you have been watching on the website, you will know that they

:00:34.:00:37.

have arrived here, and to welcome them is an actor and singer who has

:00:38.:00:42.

had quite a journey himself, all the way from Ramsay Street to the West

:00:43.:00:46.

End, Jason Donovan! Good to see you, have a seat! Thank you! That would

:00:47.:00:56.

be lovely. It is a bit nippy tonight, you should have worn a

:00:57.:01:02.

coat. I feel I have made the effort! By the end of the show you will have

:01:03.:01:06.

a scarf on. Listen, you are already in the Children in Need mood, we did

:01:07.:01:11.

a gala performance with Gary Barlow. Yes, last night was a great night,

:01:12.:01:16.

and they managed to raise a lot of money for Children in Need. There

:01:17.:01:20.

was a little bit of a concert at the end. I got to sing Too Many Broken

:01:21.:01:27.

Hearts, which I haven't... I do not pull it out of the cupboard too

:01:28.:01:31.

often! But it was a really successful night, and lots of fun,

:01:32.:01:37.

too, which was the main thing. If we are lucky, we might be able to get

:01:38.:01:40.

Jason singing, do you reckon? What do you reckon?! We will try that. I

:01:41.:01:48.

understand you are a bit of cyclist. I love cycling, I think it is a

:01:49.:01:52.

great form of transport, it is not a long way to go. There are a lot of

:01:53.:01:56.

dangers in it, but getting into town, I live in London, it is much

:01:57.:02:02.

easier than a motorbike. The rickshaw is quite wide, and they

:02:03.:02:06.

have been stuck in a few traffic jams, but you will find out all

:02:07.:02:10.

about that. We have got this walking map that we are getting people to

:02:11.:02:13.

wear, is it possible to find somebody called Rick Shaw to where

:02:14.:02:25.

it? We have almost got him, this is Eric Shaw! And I shake you by the

:02:26.:02:29.

hand? Suber to see you, I am assuming people have made the

:02:30.:02:35.

connection before. Yes, I think when I was in primary school! Sorry to

:02:36.:02:39.

take you back to those times. Let's just have a little luck, this is the

:02:40.:02:43.

route they have taken since last night, from Bolton to Manchester,

:02:44.:02:50.

all the way to Stoke on Trent, into Stafford, Wolverhampton and then

:02:51.:02:55.

here in Birmingham. It is quite an achievement, 101 miles of it. I am

:02:56.:02:59.

sure you will agree it is lovely when celebrities turn up to cheer

:03:00.:03:04.

you on, but can you imagine Team Rickshaw's surprise when somebody

:03:05.:03:06.

turned up at two o'clock in the morning in Middlewich? That is

:03:07.:03:11.

around Eric's Middlewich, there we are...

:03:12.:03:15.

It has to happen sooner or later, on Dave four the weather suddenly took

:03:16.:03:22.

a turn for the worse. Team Rickshaw were behind schedule. But Daniel

:03:23.:03:32.

stayed strong. How are you feeling? Hunky-dory! I am like a duck on

:03:33.:03:40.

water. How is the rain? Are you all right? You about a lot swimming

:03:41.:03:41.

lessons. Have to keep attempted to make up

:03:42.:03:49.

some ground, it was important that his daughter Eleanor matched his

:03:50.:03:53.

pace, so I pushed her through what would be her toughest shift so far.

:03:54.:04:01.

Catch me, you can, yes, you can! I am trying. Think about why you are

:04:02.:04:05.

doing this, think about all the bullies and what they would say if

:04:06.:04:10.

they were watching you. Yeah! Dig in, let's push forward, come on.

:04:11.:04:19.

Come on! That was the hardest one so far. You

:04:20.:04:23.

are incredibly strong, not just physically but mentally.

:04:24.:04:31.

I am struggling on this hill. Yesterday it was raining so badly

:04:32.:04:39.

that my legs hurt, and I felt available bit miserable. And I might

:04:40.:04:46.

have had a little cry. Of course, lots of our team members, with

:04:47.:04:53.

varying disabilities, have sometimes flown of certain hills, so I have

:04:54.:04:58.

got to play my part now and get up here. Rain or no rain! Hill or no

:04:59.:05:06.

hill! And later, on the night shift, with Peter at the helm of the

:05:07.:05:10.

rickshaw, the bad weather would not let up. I said earlier that I was

:05:11.:05:18.

lovely and dry but I did not mind if it rained. As soon as I jump on, it

:05:19.:05:23.

starts raining. After hours of cycling, time for a well-deserved

:05:24.:05:30.

break and a bite to eat. Hot dogs for you. Lovely! Food! All he has

:05:31.:05:38.

done is look at the food, he has got no idea who gave it to him. John

:05:39.:05:44.

Bishop, how are you, mate? Oh, while! -- wow! I have never seen

:05:45.:05:53.

anyone more disappointed other my wife. Unless you are on a rickshaw,

:05:54.:06:01.

you are not taking it. Can I have a go?

:06:02.:06:07.

I will do the rest of it! Beater lost his mother and sister in a

:06:08.:06:16.

serious car accident in 2007. -- Peter. Riding the rickshaw with his

:06:17.:06:20.

father Jeff has given them both a chance to reflect on how it has

:06:21.:06:25.

affected their life. When I think of Jeff, all I can think of is the

:06:26.:06:29.

smile, how has he been of the last couple of years? Can you tell when

:06:30.:06:33.

he's feeling a bit down? I know he does get down at times, but he keeps

:06:34.:06:43.

himself to insult at those times, and he stays strong around me. Does

:06:44.:06:47.

it feel good to be pushing yourself, to be out on this challenge

:06:48.:06:52.

together? It is just nice to rebuild our bond a little bit, spend a bit

:06:53.:06:58.

of time, just me and him. It was him teaching me, if you keep pushing,

:06:59.:07:02.

you will see a benefit on the other side.

:07:03.:07:10.

You cannot comprehend the impact it has on people's lives, putting your

:07:11.:07:18.

hand in your pocket and giving. Hole, this is telling me! That is

:07:19.:07:22.

the hardest one I have done. Well, I will tell you, it is amazing

:07:23.:07:37.

how all of these layers have been peeled away as we travel along, and

:07:38.:07:41.

what we are hearing is quite extraordinary. I am joined by

:07:42.:07:46.

Daniel's family, dad Steve, Shannon, Ashley, and as we have been saying,

:07:47.:07:51.

we have been talking as we travel along, and Daniel's condition,

:07:52.:07:55.

pneumococcal meningitis, it has changed the war as a family, hasn't

:07:56.:08:01.

it? What is the main difference? Well, I mean, obviously, he is a

:08:02.:08:08.

young man now, and he is obviously not as he should be, but he is

:08:09.:08:13.

better than... At the start of it, in a coma for three or four days, he

:08:14.:08:22.

never spoke for months. Bend and buckled inflection, I think they

:08:23.:08:26.

call it, we never thought he would stand up, never mind a ride a bike.

:08:27.:08:31.

There you are, he is incredibly strong, I have witnessed him

:08:32.:08:35.

powering through the countryside. What is quite interesting, he is not

:08:36.:08:38.

very good with his directions, I will say! I am sure you will agree,

:08:39.:08:43.

this is classic Daniel, he took a turning a little while ago and made

:08:44.:08:48.

quite an entrance, because you will see him here coming through

:08:49.:08:51.

Selfridges! He made his way through the food hall, which is classic. Of

:08:52.:08:57.

course, everybody cheering him on, everybody gets behind Daniel anyway,

:08:58.:09:02.

there is mum obviously as well. He did very well to avoid the Christmas

:09:03.:09:06.

puddings. Speaking of which, mum is on the back of the rickshaw, have

:09:07.:09:10.

you been managing to feed the family? They have been really good,

:09:11.:09:14.

actually, they have not been falling out or anything. Very good, well,

:09:15.:09:18.

mum and Daniel will be pleased to hear it, come on down, let's hear it

:09:19.:09:22.

for Daniel and Carol! Come on, Daniel, come on, lead the

:09:23.:09:39.

way, as always, in you come. No doubt Carol and Daniel will deserve

:09:40.:09:46.

a well earned snuggle. There we are. Come on in, we have got Uncle

:09:47.:09:51.

Charlie as well, anti-Barbra, come on over and say hello. Come on,

:09:52.:09:56.

Carol. Do not feel you cannot have a kiss and a couple because the

:09:57.:10:01.

cameras are here, get in there! Isn't that wonderful?! Isn't it? It

:10:02.:10:07.

is not just the family, we have got the staff from Alder Hey Hospital,

:10:08.:10:11.

who have been caring for Daniel throughout, Dr Appleton, first of

:10:12.:10:15.

all, what was the prognosis for Daniel? It was difficult to say from

:10:16.:10:20.

the start, all children and all brains are different. He was really

:10:21.:10:25.

sick, in a coma, but we had fate, and we believed, and with the team

:10:26.:10:29.

we have put together, it was fantastic. So I never gave up, it

:10:30.:10:38.

was difficult for mum and dad to say, Willy walk and talk? But I

:10:39.:10:40.

honestly believed he would. He did so amazingly well, and to be

:10:41.:10:43.

discharged within four months was fantastic. It is teamwork, the

:10:44.:10:47.

nurses here from Alder Hey, the therapists who cannot be here, plus

:10:48.:10:52.

the parents, all part of the team. It is not just a doctor but a whole

:10:53.:10:56.

team spirit, and it is the teamwork that makes him do what he has done.

:10:57.:11:02.

It is a remarkable job that you do. He has been telling us how grateful

:11:03.:11:05.

he is to the team at the hospital, so this is how you can help the

:11:06.:11:09.

rickshaw challenge and support Children in Need. If you are a

:11:10.:11:19.

father like me, text TEAM 270705. That will cost ?5, and it will go to

:11:20.:11:24.

Children in Need. If you want terms and conditions, go to the website.

:11:25.:11:30.

Come on, then. Oh, Jason Donovan! What a treat!

:11:31.:11:42.

You are friends through Strictly. All that cycling is worth it to see

:11:43.:11:49.

you here. That makes Strictly looked like a walk in the park! We do need

:11:50.:11:54.

lots of people to support us, and you have come up with an idea to get

:11:55.:12:00.

people texting, apparently. I have. It was my idea, actually! Any thing

:12:01.:12:08.

that brings money, that can help raise some extra money, it is a

:12:09.:12:12.

great story coming out of the last few weeks, some touching stuff. You

:12:13.:12:18.

performed Joseph Paxton in 1991, and if enough people text tonight here

:12:19.:12:25.

in Birmingham, Jason Donovan will reprise that. -- you performed

:12:26.:12:30.

Joseph Paxton in 1991. Phones in the air! Are there another phones in the

:12:31.:12:39.

air? Do not just wave them, text the number! Is that enough? I think that

:12:40.:12:43.

is going to be enough, straight towards the camera? Whatever way you

:12:44.:12:46.

want to do it. Link # I closed my eyes.

:12:47.:13:02.

# Drew back the curtain. # To see for certain.

:13:03.:13:07.

# What I thought I knew. # Far, far away.

:13:08.:13:13.

# Someone was weeping. # But the world was sleeping.

:13:14.:13:15.

# Any dream will do. Look at this! Look at the lengths

:13:16.:13:33.

people will go to! That was great. You have been starring in War Of The

:13:34.:13:37.

Worlds, doing an arena tour, and you have filmed it for DVD. For those of

:13:38.:13:41.

us were not familiar with the story, tell us. It is based on HG

:13:42.:13:51.

Wells' 1900s Martian invasion, and I play a character called the Parson,

:13:52.:13:57.

who is basically in fear of these Martians and think that they are

:13:58.:14:05.

part of the evil doom of mankind. A great tour, you see Marti Pellow,

:14:06.:14:11.

Ricky Wilson, Liam Neeson. I keep telling all the casting agents and

:14:12.:14:14.

the producers that I have been working with Liam Neeson, you know!

:14:15.:14:18.

And they are not that convinced, because he is only one dimensional,

:14:19.:14:24.

he is a hologram. And there are loads of catchy songs in it, because

:14:25.:14:30.

Matt fluctuates between Neil Diamond and War Of The Worlds in his car.

:14:31.:14:33.

This is you performing as Pastor Nathaniel with Kerry Ellis.

:14:34.:14:43.

# Now darkness has descended on our land.

:14:44.:14:54.

# All our prayers cannot save us. # Like lambs to the slaughter...

:14:55.:14:59.

Lovely! It is a far cry from Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

:15:00.:15:09.

Though blah I like to mix it up, and I am very much an actor first and

:15:10.:15:14.

foremost, even though my singing voice is absolutely beautiful! I

:15:15.:15:21.

like to change my rolls around, so I am on the road with Brazil until

:15:22.:15:40.

next year. -- Priscilla. Which one are you? The one in the centre. It

:15:41.:15:49.

is a long way from my days in Strictly. Kylie Minogue tweeted to

:15:50.:15:58.

say that today would be Scott and Charlene's wedding anniversary. Any

:15:59.:16:05.

chance of a reunion? We sound Especially For You, which is a

:16:06.:16:14.

really fun thing to do. For a lot of people there is a big emotional

:16:15.:16:19.

connection with Neighbours and that song was part of the whole

:16:20.:16:24.

experience and it was very special. We are in Birmingham, which is

:16:25.:16:31.

famous for a lot of things beginning with the letter C, like custard,

:16:32.:16:44.

curries and cars. Lucy has been looking at why the British car

:16:45.:16:48.

industry is now back in the fast lane. This is the Jaguar Land Rover

:16:49.:16:53.

plant in Solihull, which employs over 6000 people. Graeme Archer has

:16:54.:17:00.

been working here since he was 16. Did you like it from the start? It

:17:01.:17:05.

was wonderful. It was an apprenticeship, so you started doing

:17:06.:17:09.

the things like welding and construction work, the sort of

:17:10.:17:13.

things you would need to go into a trade. What sort of things do you do

:17:14.:17:24.

now? Now I am a tour guide, but I am too old to talk about it! In the

:17:25.:17:29.

last 12 months, the sector has produced more than 1.5 million

:17:30.:17:33.

vehicles, the highest total since 2008. In the 1970s the industry was

:17:34.:17:42.

dominated by companies like Ford, and Vauxhall. But then it fell

:17:43.:17:49.

apart. MG Rover group went into administration in 2005, bringing to

:17:50.:17:54.

an end mass car production by British owned manufacturers as we

:17:55.:17:59.

knew it. What is it like when people around you are being made redundant?

:18:00.:18:08.

It is gut-wrenching. How many times has your job been on a knife edge

:18:09.:18:16.

like that? Probably five or six. Jaguar Land Rover was struggling

:18:17.:18:22.

against the recession and some fearsome European competitors, but

:18:23.:18:28.

Billington -- and Indian condom stepped in. But could Tata Motors

:18:29.:18:39.

really succeed where others had failed? The answer is yes, five

:18:40.:18:43.

years later and Jaguar Land Rover has become a profitable business,

:18:44.:18:52.

exporting to 78 countries around the world. Without foreign investment,

:18:53.:18:58.

would you have survived? Know, without Tata Motors we wouldn't be

:18:59.:19:05.

here today. We are in the heart of the body shop now, it is this where

:19:06.:19:12.

it all happens? Absolutely, you are in the middle of the biggest

:19:13.:19:16.

aluminium body shop in the world and this is the future for us,

:19:17.:19:20.

especially now we have put aluminium technology in our SUVs. It is the

:19:21.:19:32.

future and we are very proud of it. Going back to your 16-year-old self,

:19:33.:19:39.

what would you have thought of this? It is beyond comprehension, it is so

:19:40.:19:43.

far removed from what we used to do. There would have been missed and

:19:44.:19:49.

sparks in the place, now I like to call this our operating theatre. The

:19:50.:19:55.

UK has 15 car manufacturing plants, making supercars to Nissans. The

:19:56.:20:11.

industry is now on course to break historic manufacturing records. This

:20:12.:20:15.

means a serious recruitment drive to get more young people into car

:20:16.:20:21.

engineering. These three are all on the graduate training programme

:20:22.:20:27.

here. Why did you want to work here? When you see a Range Rover going

:20:28.:20:33.

past, contributing to a certain aspect of that Range Rover, it feels

:20:34.:20:37.

good being part of the team to make that happen. You can look at the

:20:38.:20:44.

products don't think I have had apart to do with that. For the first

:20:45.:20:50.

time in many years, Britain is back in the car business. What do you

:20:51.:21:04.

love it? That. It is wonderful it means so much.

:21:05.:21:09.

Everybody will be resting up this weekend, including you I'm sure.

:21:10.:21:15.

Peter is going to be starting his intensive training to become a

:21:16.:21:19.

mechanic. I know you were glued to that film but we have something else

:21:20.:21:28.

for you to look up. Hi, Peter, it is Jenson here. I do a lot of fitness

:21:29.:21:35.

in my spare time, which is cycling, so I know how tough this challenge

:21:36.:21:40.

will be, riding a rickshaw across the country. I know your father will

:21:41.:21:45.

be riding alongside you, he is very proud of what you are achieving, so

:21:46.:21:50.

I want to say good luck with your challenge. You are a real

:21:51.:21:55.

inspiration, and I also heard you want to be a mechanic one day so

:21:56.:21:59.

stay focused with that, keep working hard, and hopefully we will see you

:22:00.:22:06.

in Formula 11 day. What do you make of that? That was awesome. We will

:22:07.:22:17.

get that put onto a DVD for you. You can play that over and over again!

:22:18.:22:33.

Over the last few months, the One Show has been tracking the first man

:22:34.:22:38.

to swim the length of Britain from Land's End to John O'Groats. This

:22:39.:22:43.

has to be the hairiest moment we have had on the show, please welcome

:22:44.:22:52.

Sean Conway and his beard! Good to see you. Congratulations. I cannot

:22:53.:22:58.

believe you are not in some massive thermals, you look like you are in

:22:59.:23:05.

the Bahamas. It is quite tropical here, quite warm! Talk me through

:23:06.:23:12.

this moment because it was all about getting there. It was very

:23:13.:23:18.

emotional. I was so cold, then my friends and the group 's sprayed

:23:19.:23:24.

champagne in my eyes! It has all been a bit of a whirlwind, a

:23:25.:23:30.

blurred. It has not sunk in to be honest. It is just good to be here,

:23:31.:23:36.

and thank you for supporting me. Team Rickshaw are going through a

:23:37.:23:40.

similar challenge, it is very tough, especially during the long

:23:41.:23:45.

hours of the night when we are cycling through derelict

:23:46.:23:49.

countryside. What tips would you have? Firstly, congratulations. Try

:23:50.:23:57.

not to be overwhelmed by the bigger picture, take metres, make miles and

:23:58.:24:04.

days. The second one is that it is hard at times but try to look around

:24:05.:24:09.

and enjoy yourself. If you just enjoy the scenery, we live in a

:24:10.:24:15.

beautiful country so make the most of it. The scenery has been the best

:24:16.:24:20.

bit about it. When we spoke to you about a month ago, you were in

:24:21.:24:25.

Scotland so how come it has taken one month to get to John O'Groats?

:24:26.:24:33.

Scotland threw everything at me. I lost a kayak let's see, an anchor

:24:34.:24:43.

got caught on some rocks, the sport boats took a hammering. An -- or

:24:44.:24:51.

until a week ago there was a risk that I wouldn't finish, but we

:24:52.:24:55.

managed to do the last few days and got to the end. I know, the cold. I

:24:56.:25:06.

nearly had to wear a child's wet suit, I lost so much weight. Join us

:25:07.:25:15.

for dinner because these lot eats like you wouldn't believe! We know

:25:16.:25:20.

that a lot of you are getting very excited about Children In Need,

:25:21.:25:24.

doing your fundraising, and Friday at school will be massive. Yesterday

:25:25.:25:31.

Martin and I visited a very special school.

:25:32.:25:47.

Hello! We were on the way, cycling through your area, and we heard you

:25:48.:25:52.

were doing this fantastic concerts to raise money for Pudsey so we came

:25:53.:26:05.

along to listen. Is that OK? Yes. Is this something you do every year?

:26:06.:26:10.

Yes, it is the fourth concert we have done now to raise money for

Children In Need and they get a lot of joy out of it. It must take a lot

:26:16.:26:22.

of rehearsing? Yes, they have to learn the words by memory but it is

:26:23.:26:28.

good fun. The children here have complex needs but they are

:26:29.:26:32.

wonderful, they care about other children who have needs and they

:26:33.:26:35.

want to do what they can to raise money, which they have done by the

:26:36.:26:42.

concert we have just put on. Then they get to see Pudsey of

:26:43.:26:49.

course. Yes, who they absolutely love, and so do we.

:26:50.:27:02.

Do you know how much money you have raised? Over ?300. That will make a

:27:03.:27:13.

difference! What a brilliant effort by the

:27:14.:27:18.

pupils at this school, and of course you at home can do your bit as

:27:19.:27:23.

well. Just drop whatever change you have got into these buckets and we

:27:24.:27:26.

will be more than grateful, won't we? We had better get going back to

:27:27.:27:35.

the rickshaw. We will be stopping off more on the

:27:36.:27:41.

way as we go. Earlier we were talking about War Of The Worlds, and

:27:42.:27:50.

tonight we are doing a war of the world 's theme. This is a Birmingham

:27:51.:28:00.

robot, it is a belter! I am going to run over there now.

:28:01.:28:10.

Come on, Jason. Jason, are you there? Here we go. 300 and 80 9000,

:28:11.:28:27.

-- 389,000! By tomorrow afternoon we will be

:28:28.:28:43.

into the Brecon Beacons and then Abergavenny by tomorrow night's

:28:44.:28:48.

show. Come here because the lovely Bethany is riding or smack out of

:28:49.:28:54.

Birmingham this evening. How are you feeling? Are you ready? Let's go on

:28:55.:29:04.

our mission! Let's do this thing! We will see you tomorrow.

:29:05.:29:11.

Jason, thank you for your company tonight. Are you all right? Yes, I

:29:12.:29:21.

will be following them in a second. Tomorrow we have got some big guests

:29:22.:29:28.

including Oprah Winfrey and Daniel Radcliffe. Goodbye!
