Hello and welcome to
the last One Show before | 0:00:14 | 0:00:24
Christmas. With my special Friday
guest presenter. The traffic out | 0:00:26 | 0:00:33
there is unbelievable. Thank you so
much. I like it. It is top-heavy. If | 0:00:33 | 0:00:45
I lean forward, I fall forward. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
School gates have been closed,
black bin liners are full | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
of the remains of office parties
and The One Show is | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
about to shut up shop. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
But before we do, we've got
a show full of music, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
lights and goodwill. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
The Canterbury Cathedral
Girls Choir are here. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
They'll be performing
a classic carol later for us. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:15
Team Rickshaw are here. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:25
Always good to see you. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
And we're all waiting
for the arrival of a jolly man | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
in a red suit who always brings
Christmas cheer. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
No, not that one. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
This one. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
I'm Father Christmas. Who is first?
Yes, I am a reindeer. Look at my | 0:01:36 | 0:01:49
antlers. Christmas is a special time
for me, and a special time for you. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:59
Please welcome Santa Rob Brydon! | 0:01:59 | 0:02:06
Good to see you. Are you all set for
Christmas? Why couldn't I wear that? | 0:02:06 | 0:02:17
I am ready for Christmas, yes. I
have been doing a little shopping | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
because we are in London, too good
an opportunity to miss. So you are | 0:02:21 | 0:02:27
sorted. Did your gift assistant do
the wrapping? My assistant's | 0:02:27 | 0:02:34
assistant did the main wrapping, in
conjunction with the shop assistant. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
But they had assistance. We will be
talking about the Highway Rat later. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:45
This year we've seen
Matt Allwright take on the A to Z | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
of Britain challenge. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
We've been sending him to towns
all across the country in search | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
of the best food and somewhere
to stay the night. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
And we've saved him somewhere
special for Christmas. | 0:02:54 | 0:03:02
I'm heading way out west to the
Cornish fishing village of Mousehole | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
in our a to Z of great British food
towns. Tonight marks the beginning | 0:03:07 | 0:03:13
of Mousehole's legendary Christmas
celebrations, to which we are | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
Cordelia invited. The harbour is
being festooned with lights by Peter | 0:03:16 | 0:03:23
Taylor and his team of volunteers.
All hands on Christmas decks. I | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
think you have a couple of bulbs
missing. How many are there? Over | 0:03:28 | 0:03:34
100,000. The lights are arranged in
a circle around the harbour, so | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
anywhere you stand in Mousehole, you
will see lots of pieces. It's a | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
fantastic sensation. Hit my lights.
Yes! Job done. One of the displays | 0:03:43 | 0:03:51
depicts a local delicacy called
stargazing pie, which has fish heads | 0:03:51 | 0:03:58
sticking out of it. The story goes
that a local fisherman went out in a | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
storm to feed the starving village,
and came back with seven different | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
types of fish. It is still cooked at
Christmas time in Mousehole, and | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
hotelier Charles is going to show me
how. That is a lot of fish for a | 0:04:11 | 0:04:16
single pie. There were a lot of
people in the village to feed and | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
they were very hungry. We will use
three today, Pollock, smoked haddock | 0:04:19 | 0:04:24
An. We mix a sauce made with fish
stock, cream, parsley, wilted | 0:04:24 | 0:04:30
spinach and eggs, topped off with a
puff pastry crust. This is where you | 0:04:30 | 0:04:36
take a really good fish pie and make
70% of people not want to eat it, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
the idea that the fish are looking
at you. Diving through the sea and | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
up and looking to the stars. So what
does it taste like? The question is, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:52
heads or tails? I think you should
try a head. The whole fish in the | 0:04:52 | 0:04:58
pie, the oil seeps into the source,
and you get a real intense flavour. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04
Here is my advice. If you come to
Mousehole, don't be put off by the | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
way it looks. It tastes incredible.
While we eat, outside people are | 0:05:08 | 0:05:14
pouring into Mousehole. We are from
Plymouth and we have come to see the | 0:05:14 | 0:05:20
lights. I had no idea it was such a
big deal. It is a thing. The | 0:05:20 | 0:05:27
population has swelled six times
tonight and Santa is collecting for | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
the harbour lights. Free mistletoe
for a small donation. Get your money | 0:05:29 | 0:05:35
out. All that I have got is 20 quid.
Most expensive mistletoe I have ever | 0:05:35 | 0:05:41
bought. Somehow I have to get value
for money from this. I paid 20 quid | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
for this, so I have to get as many
Christmas kisses as possible. Pull | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
him in. I thought you were going
to... That was a good one. Hang on! | 0:05:50 | 0:06:09
Oh, my goodness. I'm so sorry.
Please don't let me start anything. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:15
Can I just say, he's got lipstick on
him. I have. Enough of the | 0:06:15 | 0:06:21
mistletoe. Now for the lights.
Three, two, one... It's a fantastic | 0:06:21 | 0:06:34
evening, but will I be able to find
somewhere to stay tonight? It will | 0:06:34 | 0:06:40
be totally busy. Booked probably for
a year. Sure enough, there is | 0:06:40 | 0:06:45
genuinely no room at the inn.
Luckily, there is plenty of | 0:06:45 | 0:06:50
Christmas spirit. Do you know
anywhere I can state a night? We | 0:06:50 | 0:06:55
have got a spare room in our
cottage. Christmas is all about | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
sharing, reaching out to people
you've never met before. Bless you. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:05
You are blooming lucky I've got a
spare bed for you. You might have | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
two sharing with Max. That's all
right. Hello, everybody. Such a | 0:07:09 | 0:07:14
gate-crasher. Marvellous Mousehole,
new friends partying late into the | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
night. Max is a Battersea dog and I
am a straight taken in by kind | 0:07:20 | 0:07:27
people. It doesn't get much better,
just before Christmas. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:34
He will get Christmas flu, kissing
people randomly like that. I love a | 0:07:34 | 0:07:39
bit of mistletoe. You take what you
can get! | 0:07:39 | 0:07:47
As far as the Rob Brydon household
is concerned, is it a traditional | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
Christmas that you have? Do you get
involved? I am very much there. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:59
There is a definite physical
presence from me. Just overseeing? | 0:07:59 | 0:08:06
Just being there, just for Mauro,
really. I'm not a big talent in the | 0:08:06 | 0:08:13
kitchen, but I help, like Santa's
little helper. My big thing is | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
always wanting to get rid of the
wrapping paper as soon as it has | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
come off. I am like elderly
relatives used to be, and I used to | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
think, why are they doing that? Now,
give that to me. I crunch it up | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
small, saving all the ribbon. People
used to go, why are you saving it, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:38
but I will keep that. And it never
gets seen again. Hopefully the | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
dinner will be cleared and the
dishwasher stacked by 4:45pm when | 0:08:42 | 0:08:48
the Highway Rat is on. It is on
them, such a lovely film. This is a | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
very popular book but some people
who have not got children might not | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
know the story. Julia Donaldson, the
writer, Axel Scheffler, the | 0:08:56 | 0:09:03
illustrator, she wrote the Gruffalo.
The Highway Rat is played by David | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
Tennant in our version, and he has a
sweet tooth, so he steals food from | 0:09:08 | 0:09:13
all of the other creatures in this
wonderful world. If you have | 0:09:13 | 0:09:19
children, you can't not have heard
of the Highway Rat, but there will | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
be the odd friend who I mention it
to and they will say, what's that? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
You don't know the Highway Rat?!
It's a lovely book, I think one of | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
her best. And the guys that have
done this, who also did the Gruffalo | 0:09:32 | 0:09:39
and stick man and others, they have
done such a lovely job. They find | 0:09:39 | 0:09:45
new things that fit perfectly in
Julia's world. It's something I'm | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
really proud to be apart of. I think
we should introduce all of your | 0:09:49 | 0:09:55
friends to this wonderful story.
Let's look and listen your lovely | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
narrator. Do you have cakes and
chocolates, the highway robber | 0:09:58 | 0:10:03
cried. And... Chocolates,
chocolates, chocolates, the voice | 0:10:03 | 0:10:10
from the cave replied. I'm coming to
take them, the rat thief yelled. His | 0:10:10 | 0:10:16
greedy eyes grew round. Take them,
take them, take them, came back the | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
welcome sound. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:30
It is another perfect time. It is a
lovely film. They had a screening | 0:10:35 | 0:10:40
and I went to see it, so proud to be
part of it. Very heart-warming. You | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
must be a dream father to read
bedtime stories. Well, what I have | 0:10:45 | 0:10:51
found is that when I have read
bedtime stories... I've got five | 0:10:51 | 0:10:57
altogether, they are older now. I
would put on a voice and they would | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
say, do your own voice, because
naturally... The ultimate insult. I | 0:11:00 | 0:11:09
think any story sounds better with
Anthony Hopkins. So when I used to | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
read the Highway Rat to the kids I
would do it in my Anthony Hopkins | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
voice. And I would be listening and
going, that sounds good. And the | 0:11:18 | 0:11:26
kids would look up from the pillow,
do your own voice. When you were a | 0:11:26 | 0:11:33
little boy, were your parents good
storytellers? What was your | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
favourite? Stuff like Rupert the
Bear. I used to love Rupert the | 0:11:35 | 0:11:43
Bear. He's gone quiet. Robin Hood
tax very popular in Port Talbot. I | 0:11:43 | 0:11:50
remember him. Why are you laughing
at that? One mention of Port Talbot | 0:11:50 | 0:12:00
and she is away. It's Christmas, it
reminds me of home. That's right, it | 0:12:00 | 0:12:07
is Christmas, well done, Alex. Your
grip on reality has not lessened. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:12
But all of the stuff that is around
now, it makes you realise, there was | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
no Harry Potter, no Gruffalo, none
of that. But we managed. We got by, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
Alex. The Highway Rat is on
Christmas Day at 4:45pm on BBC One. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:31
We've been up and down
the country all week sending | 0:12:31 | 0:12:41
So thank you for all of your
thank yous; from the dogs | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
of Aberdeen to the topless rugby
players of Belfast. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
And one last stop -
tonight it's Liverpool. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
Merry Christmas to my family and
friends and thanks to my mum for | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
making Christmas so special. A
message to my mum and dad to say | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
thanks for being such great mums and
dads. And my mum and dad as well, | 0:12:56 | 0:13:02
all the baby-sitting throughout the
year. Thank you for 16 years of | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07
happy marriage. I love the. And I
love her, too. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:15
Welcome aboard one of the Mersey
ferries. We are quite close as a | 0:13:19 | 0:13:26
workforce, more like a family than
friendship. I would like to wish | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
Merry Christmas to our regulars and
all our visitors in 2017. Look | 0:13:30 | 0:13:35
forward to seeing you in 2018. Thank
you. We were invited to a Christmas | 0:13:35 | 0:13:44
lunch. By students from the
University. It was for pensioners | 0:13:44 | 0:13:51
and we were waited on hand and foot.
The students were lovely. It's the | 0:13:51 | 0:13:58
coming together of the older and
younger generation. Thank you to | 0:13:58 | 0:14:03
them all. Merry Christmas! I am the
postmistress, and today we have come | 0:14:03 | 0:14:10
along to thank Sally for our
Christmas top are on our postbox | 0:14:10 | 0:14:16
because she made it and it has
brought joy to everyone. I had not | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
appreciated how much pleasure it
would given this reception is | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
amazing. Rudolph the red-nosed
reindeer had a very shiny nose... | 0:14:23 | 0:14:32
Merry Christmas to all those lovely
people. Now then, we have come up | 0:14:38 | 0:14:42
with a little game. I know you have
had your Christmas special but we | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
are going to do it and we are going
to call it... | 0:14:46 | 0:14:53
That's very clever because you've
taken a Christmas word. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
Bingo. There is a team involved in
this show, it's not just the two of | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
you. More than that. We've got three
people. We've got more people lined | 0:15:04 | 0:15:11
up for this. They've each got a
Christmas story and you basically | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
have to guess which one is lying.
Which is the lie. There is one in | 0:15:14 | 0:15:20
now. We'll start with Susie and...
We'll hear all the stories first. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
Susie off you go. Every other year
on Christmas Day I have a picnic | 0:15:23 | 0:15:29
outside eight nuclear power plant.
Interesting. We'll now move on to | 0:15:29 | 0:15:41
Abena. I spent Christmas Day locked
in a bus garage after falling asleep | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
on the night bus home. Locked in a
bus garage after falling asleep on | 0:15:44 | 0:15:48
the night bus home. Finally David.
One Christmas morning I had to dash | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
to the airport to send my mum's
false teeth to America. There you | 0:15:53 | 0:16:00
are, three stories. Only one is
alive. You can question. Which one | 0:16:00 | 0:16:08
of you is lying? Not that question.
Not that question. The lie I think, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:18
I have a feeling the first Lady was
a David seemed confident. You can | 0:16:18 | 0:16:26
question. These are your mother's
teeth. And you had to send them to | 0:16:26 | 0:16:31
which country? America, to
California. You went to an airport | 0:16:31 | 0:16:35
is not a post office? It was
Christmas Day, post offices were | 0:16:35 | 0:16:39
shut. But there one flight from
America, to America from the UK. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:46
Which airport? Heathrow. All right.
In 1979. I think he's telling the | 0:16:46 | 0:16:53
truth. Lots of detail. You were
wondering about Abena. Tell me yours | 0:16:53 | 0:16:58
again. I spent Christmas Day in a
bus garage. She's telling me her lie | 0:16:58 | 0:17:05
again. Christmas Day... In a bus
garage because I fell asleep on the | 0:17:05 | 0:17:11
night bus. That could be the lie.
The nuclear... Suzy, yes. Every | 0:17:11 | 0:17:19
other year on Christmas Day I have a
picnic outside a nuclear power | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
plant. I think Abena is telling the
lie. Are you OK with people having a | 0:17:24 | 0:17:33
picnic outside a power station? Do
you not do that? You don't do that? | 0:17:33 | 0:17:42
It's a branch of Rumbelows, but much
the same thing. All I'm sure of is | 0:17:42 | 0:17:47
that David is telling the truth, I'm
not really sure... You're saying | 0:17:47 | 0:17:53
Abena is lying, would be a liar...
I've changed my mind, Suzy is lying. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:59
Would the liar step forward? It was
Abena! Why did you let me change? | 0:17:59 | 0:18:08
The other two were true. Very
quickly to prove the others are | 0:18:08 | 0:18:13
true, we've got Suzy first of all.
Oh my goodness! Enjoying a picnic | 0:18:13 | 0:18:19
stroke Christmas lunch. I'm going to
ask why. Hang on... There rather | 0:18:19 | 0:18:24
teeth. The teeth are in! It could
just be the picture of a woman with | 0:18:24 | 0:18:29
teeth. We'll have a chat with Suzy
during the next bit to sort this | 0:18:29 | 0:18:35
power station thing out. Shortly
we'll be giving you 25 choir girls | 0:18:35 | 0:18:42
a-singing and rickshaw ride is
relaxing. Here is a cricketer trying | 0:18:42 | 0:18:48
to take on a 25 days of Christmas
challenge. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:52
Cerys, it's Phil. I need your help,
they've asked me to find one of the | 0:18:58 | 0:19:05
nation's favourite Christmas carols
and give it a twist. Are you | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
serious? I never joke about
business, can you rustle me up 12 | 0:19:08 | 0:19:14
drummers? I'll see what I can do. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
Whoa. Hello. Phil, hi. Richard, I
need some papers. OK, leave it with | 0:19:20 | 0:19:30
me. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32 | |
Where can I lay my hands on a couple
of turtle doves? I think you're in | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
luck I've just found the specimen
you're looking for. Andy have you | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
got any geese your way? It's a bit
of a tall order old chap but I think | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
I've got an idea. You want what?
Nine ladies. I'll see what I can do. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:57
Phil. Matt, it's me, I need some
maids milking. OK, listen, this is | 0:19:57 | 0:20:05
the last time I'm going to help, all
right? Yeah... By. Such a chanter. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:15
-- Chancellor. It's not been easy
but I think we've pulled it off. Sit | 0:20:15 | 0:20:21
back, relax and prepare yourself for
some Christmas magic wand show | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24

Cheers! | 0:23:10 | 0:23:21
It happened. Thank you to all of the
groups who sang their hearts out for | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
us. Back in November you will
probably remember myself I'm six | 0:23:26 | 0:23:30
incredible riders, here they are,
rode 500 miles from London to | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
Glasgow in nine days will stop
APPLAUSE | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
They did a sterling job, great to
see you all again. I said before I | 0:23:37 | 0:23:41
hardly recognise you because you're
looking rested. How has life been? | 0:23:41 | 0:23:46
Doing Christmas lights switching on?
I switched on the projections. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:53
You've been getting involved in
Western markets I switched on the | 0:23:53 | 0:23:58
village Christmas tree lights. It
was an exhausting nine days. How | 0:23:58 | 0:24:03
much sleep did you have to after
that presenter-macro? I've been | 0:24:03 | 0:24:07
sleeping every day up until the
evening. Still going. Look, we | 0:24:07 | 0:24:12
talked about going back to school,
the reaction you would get, what was | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
it like? It was unreal to see the
support I got was amazing. The | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
school alone raised £4000 for the
challenge, so I'm very grateful. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:24
Brilliant. We have to say an
enormous thank you to everyone who | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
donated. Absolutely. You've worked
wonders. I've got the trouble for | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
the end of the year and it has gone
up, I can tell you. Stand by... For | 0:24:32 | 0:24:36
the terrible... -- for the total. It
stands out... 5,402,326! Goodness | 0:24:36 | 0:24:51
me, thank you from each and every
one of you. Every year we work with | 0:24:51 | 0:24:57
our neighbours at all souls Church
to make all sorts of things happen. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
We're joined by the reverend Hugh
Palmer, lovely to see you again. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:05
It's been a difficult year for some
people in 2017, what message do you | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
have for those people going forward
to 2018? Well, there was a mum in a | 0:25:09 | 0:25:18
hospital bed where a six-year-old
was dying and the chaplain comes by, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
put his arm on her shoulder and
says, I know how you feel. She's a | 0:25:21 | 0:25:25
out of her seat in an instant, eyes
blazing, she says that my son die | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
in, how dare you say you know how I
feel? He stops her and says, last | 0:25:29 | 0:25:34
year my eight-year-old boy died in
this hospital, too. He said, I do | 0:25:34 | 0:25:38
know how you feel. And Christmas is
a reminder that the God and Jesus | 0:25:38 | 0:25:45
know that as well. He gave his one
and only at Christmas and Easter. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:51
That is the hand I would want on my
shoulder going into 2018. Thank you | 0:25:51 | 0:25:55
so much. And have a restful
Christmas yourself. Peaceful | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
Christmas. Everybody is so generous
out there. I was just thinking as | 0:25:59 | 0:26:04
you were saying, the generosity of
out there. I was doing maths in my | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
head and over the seven years we've
done that challenge it has raised | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
over £21 million. Incredible. Huge
thank you to everybody who has | 0:26:11 | 0:26:16
donated. And thank you for watching
this year. We'll see you again in | 0:26:16 | 0:26:20
2018. Thank you to Rob for being
such a fantastic dust. The Highway | 0:26:20 | 0:26:25
Rat is on Christmas Day at quarter
to five on BBC One and we'll be back | 0:26:25 | 0:26:29
on the 8th of January with the Hairy
Bikers. Happy birthday to Matt Baker | 0:26:29 | 0:26:36
for tomorrow. Happy birthday! We'll
leave you with the Canterbury | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
Cathedral Girls Choir singing not
happy birthday, Silent Night. Merry | 0:26:40 | 0:26:45
Christmas. And a very Happy New
Year. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49 | |
