Hello and welcome to a new week on The One Show with Alex Jones...

:00:16.:00:18.

Our guest tonight is a big star in her own right,

:00:19.:00:22.

who's sold millions of records as part of the biggest

:00:23.:00:24.

girl group in history - but she's not here to talk

:00:25.:00:27.

At Christmas, her close friend George Michael passed away,

:00:28.:00:31.

and she's put her feelings for him into a new record,

:00:32.:00:33.

Welcome back. Good to be back. I have to say, congratulations.

:00:34.:01:03.

Congratulations to you. We are both Mum now! You 20th of January? 22nd.

:01:04.:01:14.

Welcome to The One Show, everyone! How was it going? Baby is beautiful,

:01:15.:01:20.

but, I'm not going to lie, it is quite tiring, isn't it? There's a

:01:21.:01:26.

lot of make-up going on. A lot of concealer here and there. Geri, you

:01:27.:01:32.

are here tonight because you are going to be performing for us. It is

:01:33.:01:36.

the first performance of this new record on television. It is. It's a

:01:37.:01:42.

bit nerve-racking. I'm a little bit nervous, but it feels good with you

:01:43.:01:43.

lot. You are amongst friends. Now, with banking interest

:01:44.:01:48.

rates at an all time low, you might be tempted

:01:49.:01:51.

to look at other ways to make your money grow -

:01:52.:01:53.

if you're lucky enough And, that's exactly what one

:01:54.:01:55.

pensioner did when she decided to place a small fortune in

:01:56.:01:59.

a new online investment opportunity. It was labelled as "risk-free" but,

:02:00.:02:01.

as Nick Wallis explains, Brexit and the recent snap election

:02:02.:02:13.

may have sent shock waves across global markets, but there are always

:02:14.:02:18.

investors who will make big money if they are prepared to gamble. Yet for

:02:19.:02:22.

a growing number of people in the UK, it's not just the stock market

:02:23.:02:26.

you are taking a risk on, it's the companies you are trusting your

:02:27.:02:30.

money with. The fastest-growing investment fraud on the planet is in

:02:31.:02:34.

something called binary options. The idea is that you hand over your cash

:02:35.:02:39.

and then you guess where the financial -- whether financial

:02:40.:02:46.

assets will rise or fall on the stock market. Guess right, and you

:02:47.:02:49.

can win big. But getting your hands on the cash can be a lot more

:02:50.:02:54.

difficult. Whilst there are legitimate binary options companies

:02:55.:02:58.

out there, fraudulent firms took almost ?40 million from investors

:02:59.:03:04.

last year alone. One such investor is a widow Elizabeth Ablett. She

:03:05.:03:09.

moved to the UK from Russia 20 years ago. In December, she turned to this

:03:10.:03:17.

company to fund her retirement. How did binary options catch your eye?

:03:18.:03:23.

It was a short advert somewhere, a single mum can and this money, you

:03:24.:03:28.

can do the same. Their broker sounded very honest and decent. The

:03:29.:03:34.

company even sent Elizabeth a contract, promising that her money

:03:35.:03:38.

would be in safe hands. This is one of these fully insured contracts? It

:03:39.:03:45.

says, risk level, none. Every ordinary person seeing this from the

:03:46.:03:49.

company would believe... I believed. How much of your money did you hand

:03:50.:03:55.

over to these people? ?42,000. Elisabeth could see her online

:03:56.:04:02.

account was going up, at one stage reaching ?120,000. But when she

:04:03.:04:07.

tried to withdraw any of her money, the broker disappeared. A familiar

:04:08.:04:12.

tale, according to this solicitor. It is a massive, worldwide problem.

:04:13.:04:17.

Contracts like these are typical of what the fraudsters send out to

:04:18.:04:22.

clients. They try to build trust with the client. They have no

:04:23.:04:25.

intention of adhering to this. As soon as they have your money, they

:04:26.:04:31.

will run away. So who are Binary Uno? The company claims to be based

:04:32.:04:36.

in Glasgow, but that is nothing more than a virtual office. They are

:04:37.:04:40.

addressed abroad, and there is an address here at the Seychelles, and

:04:41.:04:45.

their website is registered in Panama. They are unregulated by UK

:04:46.:04:50.

authorities, but they have a live chat function online. I'm going to

:04:51.:04:56.

use it to get in touch, posing as an investor. If I invest any money in

:04:57.:05:01.

your site, is it secure and can I withdraw it at any time? Binary Uno

:05:02.:05:06.

are saying, of course, we use the same systems as the thanks for a

:05:07.:05:11.

money transfer. It says here you can withdraw your funds at any time. So

:05:12.:05:17.

where has Elizabeth's money gone? I arranged for Binary Uno to call me

:05:18.:05:22.

back. This time, with Elizabeth listening in. How secure is my

:05:23.:05:23.

money? It's clear they will say anything to

:05:24.:05:35.

get my money. Time to come clean. I'm not going to give you any money,

:05:36.:05:40.

and there is a reason for that. I'm a BBC reporter working for The One

:05:41.:05:45.

Show, and I've got someone sitting here who's invested ?40,000 into

:05:46.:05:50.

company-macro, and she hasn't seen a penny of it. Where has that gone?

:05:51.:05:59.

She lost it in the market. I am looking at a contract now saying

:06:00.:06:03.

there is a risk level of zero. Could you just reassure us that Elizabeth

:06:04.:06:16.

Ablett will receive her money back? There you go, Elizabeth. Very

:06:17.:06:19.

defensive and he couldn't explain where your money had gone. He

:06:20.:06:24.

couldn't explain anything to do with a risk-free contracts, and he said

:06:25.:06:28.

you lost it on trade. It's rubbish. I didn't lose anything. The money is

:06:29.:06:33.

somewhere on their bank account. Binary Uno still haven't returned

:06:34.:06:36.

any of Elizabeth's money and they are still trading. Elizabeth, what

:06:37.:06:43.

would you say to anybody thinking of investing in binary trade options

:06:44.:06:48.

through Binary Uno? I wouldn't advise anybody to go near them.

:06:49.:06:53.

Please take the time to talk to someone you know and trust before

:06:54.:06:56.

you invest in anything you see online.

:06:57.:06:57.

Geri, you very quickly made a lot of money at a very young age -

:06:58.:07:03.

Where did you go for financial advice? I had a great example from

:07:04.:07:15.

my mother of work ethic. She comes from that work hard, and she was a

:07:16.:07:22.

cleaner. I had six jobs a week. I worked in a bar, I was cleaning, I

:07:23.:07:28.

was studying, so I always had that good work ethic. Sometimes when you

:07:29.:07:33.

work hard, it made me really appreciate in value what I have. My

:07:34.:07:38.

mother had a very seat on the ground approach to everything. But I think

:07:39.:07:41.

it is brilliant that The One Show can stick up for people and just

:07:42.:07:48.

expose it. It's a wonderful thing, because it can happen to anyone.

:07:49.:07:51.

Absolutely. We are going to talk about George in detail in a moment.

:07:52.:07:58.

Were you a fan of Wham! growing up? I was a massive fan. I went to their

:07:59.:08:02.

concerts, I thought I was going to marry him when I grew up. Favourite

:08:03.:08:11.

song? Freedom, from Wham!. We are going to talk about your tribute in

:08:12.:08:16.

a moment. First, have a look at ours. Here we go. When I was born,

:08:17.:08:24.

and they slapped me on the bottom, I didn't cry, I just sang.

:08:25.:08:35.

It is a big laugh. We don't get up there and say, look at us, aren't we

:08:36.:08:43.

sexy. We do, but it's a joke. We see the funny side of it. Why do you

:08:44.:08:51.

think you get criticised? Because we are the only band at the moment who

:08:52.:08:55.

are totally unashamed of being screamed at. Maybe it was

:08:56.:08:59.

unfortunate that I became well-known so young, because I think had I gone

:09:00.:09:04.

through it even four or five years later, I might have avoided some of

:09:05.:09:12.

the problems of my career. Face, the way I looked in the videos and

:09:13.:09:16.

stuff, was pretty much, sad as it is, how as I -- how I was walking

:09:17.:09:24.

about day-to-day. I was so confused about my sexuality and other things.

:09:25.:09:29.

I was prone to depression around loneliness, because it is very

:09:30.:09:33.

lonely if you are surrounded by people, but you are not really

:09:34.:09:36.

surrounded by anyone. # So much to lose

:09:37.:09:43.

# And what we had to learn... What was he like? What was he like? Ugly,

:09:44.:09:53.

spotty. It was trying to get this ugly duckling image across. When do

:09:54.:09:58.

you turn into this one? This is what we are waiting to see.

:09:59.:10:05.

That's quite sad. It must be hard for you to watch that, because you

:10:06.:10:12.

were very close friends with George. How did you meet him originally?

:10:13.:10:18.

First and foremost, I am a fan. When I became successful with the Spice

:10:19.:10:24.

Girls, we were at this radio awards ceremony at lunchtime, and I

:10:25.:10:29.

remember trying to shake off the other girls, wanting to go up to him

:10:30.:10:32.

without them. I think I pretended I was going to the loo. I went up to

:10:33.:10:44.

him and gave him big flirty eyes, and it didn't work. He gave a speech

:10:45.:10:47.

about losing his mother, and I had lost my dad. When someone is that

:10:48.:10:50.

honest, it gives a feeling of connection. I identified with that.

:10:51.:10:55.

We became friends. I found out I wasn't his cup of tea in that way.

:10:56.:11:00.

In life, I didn't see him all the time, but he is one of those people

:11:01.:11:05.

who, you know where your friends are when the chips hit the fan. He stood

:11:06.:11:11.

up for me. I lived with him when I had my first child, when I left the

:11:12.:11:16.

Spice Girls. Moments when I felt vulnerable, he stepped up for me.

:11:17.:11:22.

And with music, I would say, what do you think? It's definitely affected

:11:23.:11:27.

me when somebody... He meant a lot to me, he really did. How honest was

:11:28.:11:34.

he with you? Brutally honest. I really appreciate that, when

:11:35.:11:39.

somebody says, that's not so good. What did he say around the Spice

:11:40.:11:44.

Girls Time? He was always very feet on the ground. In that documentary,

:11:45.:11:50.

it comes through. He wasn't into the same side of it, and I saw that with

:11:51.:11:56.

him and appreciated it. We are discovering now what a generous

:11:57.:12:01.

person he was. Incredibly generous. He was with me, and relationships he

:12:02.:12:06.

had with people around him. He was a family man, but he treated everyone

:12:07.:12:10.

with respect. And the terrible news of his death was a huge shock to

:12:11.:12:20.

everybody. For you, it must have been absolutely awful. Where were

:12:21.:12:23.

you when you heard the news? It was Christmas Day, and I had an wrapped

:12:24.:12:27.

presents from him, and I thought, I would like to see him in the New

:12:28.:12:32.

Year. It was night-time. But even when I see the footage of him, you

:12:33.:12:38.

think, oh, my God. I can't believe he's gone. I've not quite digest did

:12:39.:12:45.

it. It's weird. Recently, as far as this music and this record is

:12:46.:12:49.

concerned, how has that helped you? How did the record come about? It

:12:50.:12:56.

has been amazing. The whole thing is very bittersweet. I was pregnant,

:12:57.:13:02.

like you, and all very hormonal and sensitive. When I got the news, I

:13:03.:13:06.

was in the middle of writing music. So I put all my feelings down, wrote

:13:07.:13:12.

the lyrics and a bit of melody, and then I created the song with some

:13:13.:13:18.

co-writers. I played it to the record company with some other songs

:13:19.:13:21.

and they said, we want to release that. I was like, really? Normally,

:13:22.:13:28.

that is when I would ask George what he thought. He wasn't there, so I

:13:29.:13:33.

asked with a producer called Chris Porter, who had worked with him for

:13:34.:13:41.

30 years, on Wham! and Jesus for a child. He said, ring up Shirley

:13:42.:13:46.

Lewis, his long-term backing singer. She is amazing, and I have a girl

:13:47.:13:52.

crush on her. She has amazing energy. When you are in a band, it's

:13:53.:13:57.

nice having that camaraderie. Having great backing singers who are really

:13:58.:14:04.

talented, but also having their energy. She and some others wanted

:14:05.:14:08.

to be part of it. These are people who have sung on all the songs you

:14:09.:14:13.

would know, Father Figure, Cowboys and Angels. They are so talented. It

:14:14.:14:21.

was an amazing gift. It is a seal of approval as well. You say you felt

:14:22.:14:26.

unsure about releasing it. If they are on board... Yes, it gave me

:14:27.:14:32.

courage. I went through a period of saying, what do you think? And he

:14:33.:14:39.

goes, leave time. I wanted to jump from a hot pants girl... Which we

:14:40.:14:44.

loved. To being a more mature artist. I was saying, how do you do

:14:45.:14:51.

that? Because he made that John. He said, leave time. Because this song

:14:52.:14:57.

is about him, and about us. If anybody who has lost anybody, there

:14:58.:15:03.

is great healing when you all come together. I feel better and joyful

:15:04.:15:07.

from working with these wonderful people. I feel like something has

:15:08.:15:12.

lifted. You talk about those wonderful people, and they are with

:15:13.:15:15.

us tonight. We can hear the secret to those wonderful tones right now.

:15:16.:15:21.

# I don't want your freedom not # I don't want to play around

:15:22.:15:28.

# I don't want nobody baby # Part-time love just brings me down

:15:29.:15:38.

# I don't want your freedom # Girl all I want right now is you #

:15:39.:15:44.

CHEERING APPLAUSE

:15:45.:15:53.

Great to hear that life. Another thing which occurred to me, I went

:15:54.:15:59.

on a pilgrimage and met up with Esther Rantzen and she told me...

:16:00.:16:06.

About how generous he was to ChildLine? Yeah, he gave all the

:16:07.:16:10.

royalties of from Jesus to a child to ChildLine and all the profits I

:16:11.:16:16.

make from this record will go to ChildLine and Stephen Fry I met him

:16:17.:16:20.

the other day and he said he was raising money for the Terrence

:16:21.:16:24.

Higgins trust and he said George pulled him aside and said you can

:16:25.:16:28.

have all the profits from Britain of ladies and gentlemen, the collection

:16:29.:16:34.

album. He was so, I didn't know that. Wow.

:16:35.:16:39.

Geri will be performing Angel In Chains in the studio later.

:16:40.:16:42.

Michael Douglas has been to Eastleigh, meanwhile,

:16:43.:16:44.

to find out why one woman's performance at a bus stop,

:16:45.:16:47.

of all places, led to her 15 minutes of fame.

:16:48.:16:56.

When it comes to stardom, to paraphrase Shakespeare, some are

:16:57.:17:02.

born to it, some Seagate and others have it thrust upon them. And it

:17:03.:17:06.

into that final category that a certain lady called LA from here in

:17:07.:17:12.

Eastleigh in Hampshire can firmly be put. Don't remember her? Maybe this

:17:13.:17:19.

footage will jog your memory. Whilst Ellison play waiting for the bus and

:17:20.:17:23.

listening to some urban songs she got the urge to shake her thing. And

:17:24.:17:32.

then she should get some more. Little did our bus stop booty shake

:17:33.:17:40.

her know that her whole performance was being recorded on a mobile

:17:41.:17:45.

phone. The footage taken by someone she had never even met was about to

:17:46.:17:50.

break the Internet. We have tracked Ellie down and are meeting her where

:17:51.:17:56.

the recording took place. Are you all right, nice to see you. So this

:17:57.:18:01.

is the window? Taylor it is indeed. There is the bus stop. Why did you

:18:02.:18:08.

start dancing that day? Taylor I had my headphones on and I blanked out

:18:09.:18:16.

was this usual behaviour for you? Friends of the family and my

:18:17.:18:23.

five-month-old daughter or look at me like I am a lunatic so yes. She

:18:24.:18:29.

was unaware of her dance moves had been caught on camera and the clip

:18:30.:18:33.

was on YouTube gaining millions of hits. She had gone viral. Only

:18:34.:18:38.

discovering she was an Internet sensation when her best friend

:18:39.:18:43.

called her at work. I went into the office and said have you seen this?

:18:44.:18:55.

They said yes. I was like why did you not tell me? They said we

:18:56.:18:58.

thought you knew. I said does this look like a face that would know

:18:59.:19:01.

that? She was splashed across the press and even made it onto the day

:19:02.:19:08.

programme in America. My mum always said I had more rhythm than sense.

:19:09.:19:18.

How did that feel? Quite exciting. While her 15 minutes of fame was

:19:19.:19:23.

nearing its end the star power of the local celebrity scene was far

:19:24.:19:28.

from over. One theatre director caught her performance and thought

:19:29.:19:32.

she really did have talent. How are you? After seeing this video of

:19:33.:19:38.

Ellie dancing what went through your mind? It was after I was doing the

:19:39.:19:46.

Ah Men sure I thought it would be nice to turn this situation around

:19:47.:19:51.

and give her a chance to dance on stage so she could have something to

:19:52.:19:55.

be proud of. I tracked her down and asked that she would like to come

:19:56.:19:59.

along to rehearsal and see how we got along. She did and I had a

:20:00.:20:05.

chance to give her her dream. And four Ellie, a former performing arts

:20:06.:20:10.

student that is exactly what it was. It came out of the blue and I

:20:11.:20:14.

thought it was brilliant. It was something I had always wanted to do

:20:15.:20:17.

and it's a little thing ticked off the bucket list that I have managed

:20:18.:20:26.

to do something like that. This is the story of how one bit of mobile

:20:27.:20:29.

phone footage can catapult you from the bus stop to the big-time almost

:20:30.:20:31.

overnight. And jet the whole thing happened so quickly Ellie never got

:20:32.:20:37.

the chance to do the one thing that everyone who tread the boards longs

:20:38.:20:41.

to do, and on court. But let's put that right! -- an encore. But first

:20:42.:20:49.

I need to get her cameraready. Are you ready? Yes I am. One, two, one,

:20:50.:20:57.

two, three, four. # You can dance

:20:58.:21:08.

# You can jive # Having the time of your life

:21:09.:21:14.

# See that girl # Watch that scene

:21:15.:21:18.

# Digging the Dancing Queen! # And Ellie the Dancing Queen

:21:19.:21:26.

is with us tonight, and she's still going,

:21:27.:21:29.

throwing some shapes But, Geri - can you guess

:21:30.:21:36.

which famous Spice Girls She is doing that, I think it is

:21:37.:21:48.

Spice Up Your Life. Let's have a listen... Take your headphones

:21:49.:21:54.

off... Yes! APPLAUSE Tell us you are a big Spice Girls

:21:55.:22:01.

fan? A huge fan. I love you Geri. How many hits do you have globally?

:22:02.:22:08.

About 100 million. APPLAUSE Incredible. But you are not at the

:22:09.:22:15.

bus stop because you are a full-time mum. Five-month-old as well! Do not

:22:16.:22:19.

worry we will get you a taxi home. Over the weekend, more than 100,000

:22:20.:22:26.

people gathered in a field to enjoy one of

:22:27.:22:29.

the biggest festivals in Europe. It has to be Glastonbury,

:22:30.:22:31.

hasn't it? I have come to Birmingham for a

:22:32.:22:46.

party. This is the night of the Moon and its preparation for Eid. It

:22:47.:22:54.

marks the end of Ramadan. The night before it is tradition to gather in

:22:55.:22:59.

the street and celebrate. That is traditional Eid food, rich tea

:23:00.:23:04.

biscuits, thank you. It is community, everyone is out and

:23:05.:23:07.

enjoying themselves and having a good time. This is the party before

:23:08.:23:17.

the party. It's getting really loud note here. I am going to speak to

:23:18.:23:22.

the family. After the recent terror attacks like many people out here

:23:23.:23:27.

they believe this event is more important than ever. It is very

:23:28.:23:31.

important that we should be more visible. I will say to my brothers

:23:32.:23:34.

and sisters that they should come out, too sure their solidarity and

:23:35.:23:41.

this is how we can defeat terrorism. Politics aside there are other

:23:42.:23:46.

priorities. Are you going to finish that cake, it is huge? I want to

:23:47.:23:53.

finish half of cake. I just feel like eating half of the cake. After

:23:54.:23:59.

a month of fasting Eid is triggered by the sighting of a new moon but it

:24:00.:24:03.

is cloudy so we cannot see it but thanks to the wonders of science and

:24:04.:24:08.

social media I can announce that tomorrow.

:24:09.:24:15.

It is Eid morning, just before nine and I want to find out why this is

:24:16.:24:23.

Europe's biggest Eid festival. Around 100,000 people have descended

:24:24.:24:26.

on Small Heath Park in Birmingham, beginning with a mass prayer

:24:27.:24:33.

meeting. It's absolutely huge, this sermon is on screens and on this

:24:34.:24:38.

massive PA system. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. I grew up

:24:39.:24:43.

going to mosque in Huddersfield with my dad on Eid morning and everyone

:24:44.:24:48.

was British and Pakistani, over here this morning I have seen men and

:24:49.:24:53.

women, people of all ages and people from every single nation. It's kind

:24:54.:24:58.

of amazing to see a community asserting itself in this way. It's

:24:59.:25:05.

beautiful. After a whole month of fasting it's time to consume as much

:25:06.:25:09.

sugar and fat as is humanly possible, it's time to have some

:25:10.:25:11.

fun. People have crossed continents to be

:25:12.:25:23.

here. These people come from Pennsylvania USA. It's amazing, I am

:25:24.:25:27.

overwhelmed, the number of people here. It's heart-warming. The sun is

:25:28.:25:37.

shining, everyone is having fun, eating and drinking cups of tea. It

:25:38.:25:41.

feels like a village fete, it's the perfect quintessentially English end

:25:42.:25:43.

the month of Ramadan. Thank you very much. Yes, thank you,

:25:44.:26:02.

just doing a bit of sound checking, everyone is in position and Geri is

:26:03.:26:06.

at the microphone and Ellie you will be able to do some dancing. Tomorrow

:26:07.:26:10.

we are back and we will be joined by snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan who

:26:11.:26:18.

will be making his One Show debut. You're excited. I am a big fan, he's

:26:19.:26:24.

a nice guy, my mum and dad went to see him and he waved. Eugh I am

:26:25.:26:29.

looking forward to him tomorrow then. Playing out tonight for the

:26:30.:26:34.

first time on TV it is Geri Horner with her new single Angel In Chains,

:26:35.:26:38.

all the proceeds go to ChildLine. Here she is. APPLAUSE
