Hello and welcome to The One Show,

with Matt Baker...

0:00:160:00:19

and Michelle Ackerley -

after the announcement

0:00:190:00:22

of the royal engagement today,

we will be showing the first

0:00:220:00:25

and only interview with Prince Harry

and his fiancee, Meghan Markle,

0:00:250:00:30

right here on The One Show, in full.

0:00:300:00:32

They spoke earlier today

to the BBC's Mishal Hussain -

0:00:320:00:36

who's with us tonight...

0:00:360:00:39

along with someone who also has

0:00:390:00:41

a big announcement to make -

Gabby Logan will be exclusively

0:00:410:00:43

revealing the contenders

for this year's

0:00:430:00:45

Sports Personality of the Year.

0:00:450:00:49

We will be over very shortly. There

has been a lot of talk about the

0:00:490:00:53

royal couple. Sadly, they wouldn't

come onto our sofa, so here they are

0:00:530:00:57

on theirs.

Here's Prince Harry and

Meghan Markle talking to Michelle.

0:00:570:01:06

Your Royal Highness, Meghan Markle,

congratulations to you both.

0:01:080:01:10

Thank you.

0:01:100:01:11

Can we start with the proposal

and the actual moment

0:01:110:01:14

of your engagement?

0:01:140:01:15

When did it happen,

how did it happen?

0:01:150:01:17

It happened a few weeks ago,

earlier this month,

0:01:170:01:19

here at our cottage.

0:01:190:01:20

Just a standard,

typical night for us.

0:01:200:01:21

Just a cosy night.

0:01:210:01:22

What were we doing?

0:01:220:01:24

Just roasting chicken.

0:01:240:01:25

Trying to roast a chicken.

0:01:250:01:26

Trying to roast a chicken.

0:01:260:01:27

And it was just an amazing surprise.

0:01:270:01:29

It was so sweet, and natural,

and very romantic.

0:01:290:01:31

He got on one knee.

0:01:310:01:32

Of course.

0:01:320:01:33

Was it an instant yes from you?

0:01:330:01:35

Yes!

0:01:350:01:36

As a matter of fact, I could barely

let you finish proposing.

0:01:360:01:39

I said, "Can I say yes now?"

0:01:390:01:41

She didn't even let me finish.

0:01:410:01:42

She said, "Can I say yes?"

0:01:420:01:43

And then there was hugs,

and I had the ring on my finger,

0:01:430:01:47

and I was like, "Can

I give you the ring?"

0:01:470:01:49

And she was like,

"Oh, yes, the ring!"

0:01:490:01:51

So it was a really nice moment.

0:01:510:01:53

It was just the two of us,

and I think I managed

0:01:530:01:56

to catch her by surprise as well.

0:01:560:01:57

And this is how long

after you first met?

0:01:570:01:59

It would be a year and a half,

a little bit more than that.

0:01:590:02:03

Just about a year and a half.

0:02:030:02:04

Which, for most people,

would be quite a whirlwind.

0:02:040:02:07

Is that how it's felt to you?

0:02:070:02:08

I don't think that I would call it

a whirlwind in terms

0:02:080:02:11

of our relationship.

0:02:110:02:12

Obviously, there have been

layers attached to how

0:02:120:02:14

public it has become,

after we had a good five

0:02:140:02:16

or six months with just

privacy, which was amazing.

0:02:160:02:20

But, no, I think we were able

to really have so much

0:02:200:02:23

time just to connect,

and we never went longer than two

0:02:230:02:26

weeks without seeing each other,

even though we were obviously doing

0:02:260:02:28

a long distance relationship, so...

0:02:280:02:31

We made it work.

0:02:310:02:36

How did you first meet?

0:02:360:02:37

Er...

0:02:370:02:39

Yes, we first met.

0:02:390:02:40

We were introduced, actually,

by a mutual friend, who we will...

0:02:400:02:43

We should protect her privacy.

0:02:430:02:45

..protect her privacy, yeah.

0:02:450:02:46

A little too much of that.

0:02:460:02:49

And, but, it was literally

through her, and then we met once

0:02:490:02:53

and then twice back-to-back,

two dates, in London last July,

0:02:530:02:58

beginning of July, and then

it was I think about three,

0:02:580:03:01

maybe four, weeks later that

I managed to persuade her to come

0:03:010:03:03

and join me in Botswana,

and we camped out with each other

0:03:030:03:06

under the stars, and we spent...

0:03:060:03:10

She came and joined me

for five days out there,

0:03:100:03:12

which was absolutely fantastic.

0:03:120:03:17

So, then we were really

by ourselves, which was crucial,

0:03:170:03:20

to me, to make sure that we had

a chance to get to know each other.

0:03:200:03:25

Your friend who introduced you -

was she trying to set you up?

0:03:250:03:28

Yes, it was definitely a setup.

0:03:280:03:29

It was a blind date.

0:03:290:03:31

It was a blind date, for sure.

0:03:310:03:32

And it's so interesting

because we talk about it now,

0:03:320:03:35

and even then, you know,

because I'm from the States,

0:03:350:03:37

you don't grow up with the same

understanding of the Royal Family,

0:03:370:03:42

and so, while I now understand very

clearly there is a global interest

0:03:420:03:46

there, I didn't know much about him,

and so the only thing I had

0:03:460:03:50

asked her when she said she wanted

to set us up was one question -

0:03:500:03:53

I said, is he nice?

0:03:530:03:56

Because if he wasn't kind, it didn't

seem like it would make sense,

0:03:560:03:59

so we went and met for a drink,

and I think very quickly into that,

0:03:590:04:04

we said, what are we doing tomorrow?

0:04:040:04:06

We should meet again.

0:04:060:04:08

What are you doing tomorrow,

let's meet again.

0:04:080:04:10

And then it was like, right,

diaries, we need to get the diaries

0:04:100:04:13

out and find out how

we are going to make this work,

0:04:130:04:16

because I was off to Africa

for a month, she was working,

0:04:160:04:19

and we just said,

right, where's the gap?

0:04:190:04:21

And the gap happened to be

in the perfect place, so...

0:04:210:04:23

So how much did you,

Prince Harry, know about Meghan?

0:04:230:04:26

Had you seen her on TV?

0:04:260:04:27

No.

0:04:270:04:29

I'd never even heard

about her until this

0:04:290:04:31

friend said "Meghan Markle".

0:04:310:04:33

I was like, right, OK,

give me a bit of background, like,

0:04:330:04:35

what's going on here?

0:04:350:04:39

So I'd never watched Suits,

I'd never heard of Meghan before,

0:04:390:04:42

and I was beautifully surprised

when I walked into that room

0:04:420:04:45

and saw her, and there

she was sitting there.

0:04:450:04:49

I was like, OK, I'm going to have

to really up my game here.

0:04:490:04:52

Sit down and make sure

I've got good chat.

0:04:520:04:56

I think for both of us it was really

refreshing, because,

0:04:560:05:00

given that I didn't know a lot

about him, everything that

0:05:000:05:03

I've learned about him,

I learned through him,

0:05:030:05:05

as opposed to having grown up around

different news stories

0:05:050:05:08

or tabloids or whatever else.

0:05:080:05:10

Everything I learned

about him and his family

0:05:100:05:12

was what he would share with me,

and vice versa, so for both of us

0:05:120:05:15

it was just a really authentic

and organic way to get

0:05:150:05:18

to know each other.

0:05:180:05:20

Was that quite refreshing

for you in the way that

0:05:200:05:22

you'd been brought up,

with a lot of people

0:05:220:05:24

knowing a lot about you?

0:05:240:05:25

Or thinking they know.

0:05:250:05:27

Or thinking they know.

0:05:270:05:28

Exactly.

0:05:280:05:29

It was hugely refreshing,

to be able to get to know someone

0:05:290:05:32

who isn't necessarily

within your circle,

0:05:320:05:33

doesn't know much about me.

0:05:330:05:37

I don't know much about her,

so to be able to start almost

0:05:370:05:40

afresh, right from the beginning,

and getting to know each other

0:05:400:05:43

step by step, and then taking that

huge leap of only two dates and then

0:05:430:05:46

going effectively on holiday

together in the middle of nowhere,

0:05:460:05:51

and sharing a tent together

and all that kind of

0:05:510:05:53

stuff, it was fantastic.

0:05:530:05:55

It was absolutely amazing to get

to know her as quickly as I did.

0:05:550:06:00

And starting a long-distance

relationship.

0:06:000:06:02

You were working on Suits.

0:06:020:06:04

You had, I imagine,

a packed filming schedule.

0:06:040:06:05

You've got lots of

commitments of your own.

0:06:050:06:07

How hard was it

to keep things going?

0:06:070:06:11

It was just a choice, right?

0:06:110:06:14

I think that, very early on,

when we realised we were going

0:06:140:06:17

to commit to each other,

we knew we had to invest the time

0:06:170:06:21

and the energy and whatever it took

to make that happen.

0:06:210:06:24

So, yes, with the filming schedule,

it was not the easiest,

0:06:240:06:26

because of course it included a lot

of travel back and forth, but...

0:06:260:06:34

I don't think you've had any idea

what time zone you've been

0:06:340:06:37

on for the last year and a half.

0:06:370:06:38

No, no.

0:06:380:06:42

Coming over here for days or weeks,

and going back and straight

0:06:420:06:45

into filming the next day,

4am wake-up calls on a Monday,

0:06:450:06:47

straight into set.

0:06:470:06:48

Right off the plane and straight

to set, just coming back...

0:06:480:06:51

And just trying to stay

as close as possible,

0:06:510:06:54

but on two different time zones,

and five hours apart,

0:06:540:06:57

does have its challenges,

but we made it work,

0:06:570:06:59

and now we're here, so...

0:06:590:07:01

We're thrilled.

0:07:010:07:04

In the case of your relationship,

unlike for most people,

0:07:040:07:06

there's this whole layer of what it

means to get involved with someone

0:07:060:07:09

from the Royal Family.

0:07:090:07:11

How much of a sense did you have,

Meghan, of the enormity

0:07:110:07:13

of what you were getting

into and what it might

0:07:130:07:16

mean for your life?

0:07:160:07:17

I think I can very safely say,

as naive as it sounds now,

0:07:170:07:21

having gone through this learning

curve in the past year and a half,

0:07:210:07:24

I did not have any understanding

of just what it would be like.

0:07:240:07:27

I don't think either of us did.

0:07:270:07:29

We've both said that.

0:07:290:07:30

Even though we knew

that it would be...

0:07:300:07:33

I tried to warn you as much

as possible, but I think both of us

0:07:330:07:37

were totally surprised

by the reaction after the first five

0:07:370:07:43

or six months that we had

to ourselves of what would actually

0:07:430:07:46

happen from then, so you can have

as many conversations as you want

0:07:460:07:49

and try and prepare as much

as possible, but we were totally

0:07:490:07:52

unprepared for what

happened after that.

0:07:520:07:53

The scrutiny.

0:07:530:07:54

Well, all sorts.

0:07:540:07:55

I think also because...

0:07:550:07:58

It's a misconception

that because I worked

0:07:580:08:01

in the entertainment industry,

that this would be something

0:08:010:08:04

I would be familiar with.

0:08:040:08:06

Even though I'd been on my show

for six years at that point,

0:08:060:08:09

and working before that,

I've never been part of tabloid

0:08:090:08:11

culture, never been in pop

culture to that degree,

0:08:110:08:16

and lived a relatively quiet life,

even though I focused so much

0:08:160:08:19

on my job, so that was

a really stark difference

0:08:190:08:22

out of the gate, but...

0:08:220:08:27

And I think we were just hit so hard

at the beginning with a lot

0:08:270:08:31

of mistruths that I made the choice

to not read anything,

0:08:310:08:34

positive or negative.

0:08:340:08:35

It just didn't make sense.

0:08:350:08:37

Instead, we focused all

of our energies just

0:08:370:08:39

on nurturing our relationship.

0:08:390:08:40

On us, yeah.

0:08:400:08:41

On us.

0:08:410:08:43

And some of that scrutiny -

and you ended up making a very

0:08:430:08:46

public statement about it -

some of that scrutiny was centred

0:08:460:08:49

around your ethnicity, Meghan.

0:08:490:08:50

When you realised that,

what did you think?

0:08:500:08:52

Of course it's

disheartening, you know.

0:08:520:08:58

It's a shame that that is

the climate, in this world,

0:08:580:09:05

to focus that much on that,

or be discriminatory in that sense.

0:09:050:09:08

But I think, at the end of the day,

I'm really just proud of who I am

0:09:080:09:12

and where I come from,

and we have never put

0:09:120:09:14

any focus on that.

0:09:140:09:16

We've just focused on who we are

as a couple, and so,

0:09:160:09:18

when you take all those extra layers

away, and all of that noise,

0:09:180:09:22

I think it makes it really easy

to just enjoy being together,

0:09:220:09:24

and tune all the rest of that out.

0:09:240:09:28

Now that it is all official,

Prince Harry, do you have that sense

0:09:280:09:32

that the combination of the two

of you and your different

0:09:320:09:34

backgrounds, that you together

represent something

0:09:340:09:36

new for the Royal Family?

0:09:360:09:37

I don't know if it's something new.

0:09:370:09:41

For me, it's an added

member of the family.

0:09:410:09:44

It's another team player

as part of the bigger team.

0:09:440:09:49

For all of us, all we want to do

is be able to carry out

0:09:490:09:52

the right engagements,

carry out our work, and try

0:09:520:09:55

and encourage others and the younger

generation to be able to see

0:09:550:09:58

the world in the correct sense,

rather than perhaps

0:09:580:10:00

being a distorted view.

0:10:000:10:07

So, you know, the fact that I fell

in love with Meghan so incredibly

0:10:070:10:10

quickly was sort of confirmation

to me that everything,

0:10:100:10:13

all the stars were aligned,

everything was just perfect.

0:10:130:10:17

There was this beautiful woman

who had literally tripped

0:10:170:10:19

and fell into my life.

0:10:190:10:20

I fell into her life.

0:10:200:10:21

And the fact that she...

0:10:210:10:24

I know the fact that she'll be

really, unbelievably good at

0:10:240:10:28

the job part of it as well is

obviously a huge relief to me,

0:10:280:10:32

because she will be able to deal

with everything else that comes

0:10:320:10:35

with it, but we are

a fantastic team.

0:10:350:10:37

We know we are.

0:10:370:10:40

We hope to, over time,

try and have as much impact

0:10:400:10:43

for all the things we care

about as much as possible.

0:10:430:10:45

I'm very excited about that.

0:10:450:10:48

And, Meghan, given your acting

and the profiles you'd had,

0:10:480:10:50

you'd already been involved

in various causes.

0:10:500:10:52

You'd been an ambassador for the UN.

0:10:520:10:54

What about this new role?

0:10:540:10:57

You're going to have a bigger

platform, a bigger voice.

0:10:570:10:59

What do you want to do with that?

0:10:590:11:01

I mean...

0:11:010:11:02

Sing!

0:11:020:11:03

Can you imagine?

0:11:030:11:04

No.

0:11:040:11:10

I'm not a singer!

0:11:100:11:12

I think what's been really exciting

as we talk about the transition

0:11:120:11:14

of this out of my career

but into the role, is that,

0:11:140:11:17

as you said, the causes that have

been really important to me,

0:11:170:11:20

I can focus more energy on,

because very early out of the gate,

0:11:200:11:23

I think you realise once you have

access, or a voice that people

0:11:230:11:28

are willing to listen to,

with that comes a lot

0:11:280:11:30

of responsibility,

which I take seriously.

0:11:300:11:32

And at the same time I think,

in these beginning few months,

0:11:320:11:34

and now being boots on the ground

in the UK, I'm excited to just

0:11:340:11:38

really get to know more

about the different communities

0:11:380:11:40

here, smaller organisations

who are working on the same causes

0:11:400:11:42

that I've always been passionate

about under the same umbrella,

0:11:420:11:48

and also being able to go

round to the Commonwealth.

0:11:480:11:51

I think it's just

the beginning of...

0:11:510:11:52

There's a lot to do!

0:11:520:11:53

There's a lot to do.

0:11:540:11:55

And it's an immense change.

0:11:550:11:56

You're getting a new

country out of it.

0:11:560:11:58

A husband, obviously.

0:11:580:12:00

That sounds nice.

0:12:000:12:03

It does.

0:12:030:12:04

But also giving up your career.

0:12:040:12:06

Yes.

0:12:060:12:07

But I don't see it

as giving anything up.

0:12:070:12:09

I see it as a change.

0:12:090:12:11

It's a new challenge.

0:12:110:12:12

It's a new chapter, right?

0:12:120:12:15

And also, keep in mind I've been

working on my show for seven years,

0:12:150:12:18

so we were very, very fortunate

to be able to have that sort

0:12:180:12:21

of longevity on a series,

and for me, once we hit

0:12:210:12:24

the 100 episode marker,

I thought, you know what?

0:12:240:12:28

I have ticked this box

and I feel really proud

0:12:280:12:31

of the work I've done there,

and now it's time to, as I said,

0:12:310:12:34

work as a team with you.

0:12:340:12:38

Do you have that sense

of responsibility, Prince Harry,

0:12:380:12:40

for what you are asking

Meghan to do?

0:12:400:12:43

Of course.

0:12:430:12:47

That sense of responsibility

was essentially from day one,

0:12:470:12:50

or maybe a couple of months in,

when I realised that

0:12:500:12:52

actually this is...

0:12:520:12:56

You know, I know that I'm

in love with this girl,

0:12:560:12:58

and I hope that she is in love with

me, but we still had to sit down

0:12:580:13:02

on the sofa, and I still had to have

some pretty frank conversations

0:13:020:13:05

with her to say, you know,

what you're letting yourself

0:13:050:13:08

in for, it is a big deal.

0:13:080:13:09

And it's not, it's

not easy for anybody.

0:13:090:13:14

But I know that, at the end

of the day, she chooses me,

0:13:140:13:17

and I choose her, and therefore

whatever we have to tackle together,

0:13:170:13:20

or individually, it will always be

us together as a team,

0:13:200:13:25

so I think she's capable...

0:13:250:13:27

That's so nicely said, isn't it?

0:13:270:13:30

She's capable of anything,

and together, as I said,

0:13:300:13:38

there's a hell of a lot of stuff

and work that needs doing.

0:13:380:13:41

At the moment, for us,

it's going to be making sure

0:13:410:13:44

that our relationship is always put

first, but both of us have

0:13:440:13:47

passions for wanting to make

change, change for good,

0:13:470:13:51

and with lots of young people

running around the Commonwealth,

0:13:510:13:54

that's where we're going to spend

most of our time.

0:13:540:13:56

And it was really one of the first

things we connected on.

0:13:560:13:59

It was one of the first

things we started talking

0:13:590:14:01

about when we met, was just

the different things

0:14:010:14:03

that we wanted to do

in the world, and how passionate

0:14:030:14:06

we were about seeing change.

0:14:060:14:07

That's what got date two!

0:14:070:14:09

Plenty to talk about.

0:14:090:14:11

Children?

0:14:110:14:12

Not currently, no.

0:14:120:14:16

Of course, you know,

one step at a time, and hopefully

0:14:160:14:19

we'll start a family

in the near future.

0:14:190:14:22

You've met each other's

families, I imagine?

0:14:220:14:26

Yes, his family has been

so welcoming, and...

0:14:260:14:28

You've met quite a few

of them, actually.

0:14:280:14:30

I have, on both sides.

0:14:300:14:31

His mom's side as well,

which has been really

0:14:310:14:33

important to me too.

0:14:330:14:35

But, yes, the family has been great,

and over the past year and a half,

0:14:350:14:39

we've just had a really nice time

getting to know them,

0:14:390:14:42

and progressively helping me feel

a part of not just the institution

0:14:420:14:45

but also part of the family,

which has been really special.

0:14:450:14:50

Trying to track them down and make

sure that they are around

0:14:500:14:53

at the same time that she's popping

in without telling too many people.

0:14:530:14:57

We've actually done incredibly well

to make sure that you've

0:14:570:14:59

met all the key people.

0:14:590:15:02

A lot of the time that you've

been together in this

0:15:020:15:06

last year and a half,

you've been at home a lot?

0:15:060:15:09

Yes.

0:15:090:15:11

We had to sort of reverse the whole

process, and cosy nights

0:15:110:15:16

in in front of the television,

cooking dinner with just the two

0:15:160:15:22

of us by ourselves in our

little cottage, rather

0:15:220:15:24

than going out for dinner

0:15:240:15:26

and being seen in public,

so we've reversed the whole

0:15:260:15:28

process, which is...

0:15:280:15:29

It has provided different

opportunities, and it's made us

0:15:290:15:31

a hell of a lot closer in a short

space of time, without question,

0:15:310:15:34

so if anybody else...

0:15:340:15:36

Maybe slow down on the dates,

and spend more time at home.

0:15:360:15:42

For us, it's an opportunity

to really get to know each other

0:15:420:15:45

without other people looking,

or trying to take photos

0:15:450:15:47

on their phone and stuff.

0:15:470:15:49

That comes with the job,

comes with the role,

0:15:490:15:51

but, where possible...

0:15:510:15:54

And we were able to really get

to know each other that way,

0:15:540:15:57

but also then to go and have

friends over for dinner,

0:15:570:16:01

or go to his family for tea,

or any of those sort of things.

0:16:010:16:04

Just to take the time to be able

to go on long country walks,

0:16:040:16:07

and just talk.

0:16:070:16:10

We've been all over the place.

0:16:100:16:11

Have you met the Queen?

0:16:110:16:12

I have, yes.

0:16:120:16:14

A couple of times.

0:16:140:16:15

What was that like?

0:16:150:16:17

It's incredible.

0:16:170:16:25

I think, a) to be able

to meet her through his lens,

0:16:250:16:28

not just with his honour and respect

for her as the monarch,

0:16:280:16:30

but the love that he has

for her as his grandmother,

0:16:300:16:33

all of those layers have been

so important for me,

0:16:330:16:35

so that when I met her I had a deep

understanding, and of course

0:16:350:16:39

incredible respect for being able

to have that time with her.

0:16:390:16:41

She's an incredible woman.

0:16:410:16:46

And the corgis took

to you straightaway.

0:16:460:16:49

I've spent the last 33

years being barked at,

0:16:490:16:51

and this woman walks in,

and absolutely nothing.

0:16:510:16:53

Just laying on my feet during tea.

0:16:530:16:54

Wagging tails...

0:16:540:16:55

I was just like, oh.

0:16:550:16:57

That has to be a good sign.

0:16:570:16:58

Speaking of dogs, have

you brought yours to the UK?

0:16:580:17:01

Well, I have two dogs that I've had

for quite a long time,

0:17:010:17:04

my rescue pups, and one is now

staying with very close friends,

0:17:040:17:07

and my other little guy,

yes, he's in the UK.

0:17:070:17:11

He's been here for a while.

0:17:110:17:13

OK.

0:17:130:17:14

Let's hope he adjusts well.

0:17:140:17:15

Yeah, I think he's doing just fine.

0:17:150:17:17

What was it like introducing Meghan

to your father and your brother?

0:17:170:17:20

Um...

0:17:200:17:22

What was it like?

0:17:220:17:24

It was exciting.

0:17:240:17:25

I mean, I'd been seeing her

for a period of time

0:17:250:17:28

when I literally didn't tell anybody

at all, and then William

0:17:280:17:32

was longing to meet her,

and so was Catherine,

0:17:320:17:36

and being our neighbours,

we managed to get that

0:17:360:17:38

in quite a few times now,

and Catherine's been

0:17:380:17:41

absolutely amazing.

0:17:410:17:43

She's been wonderful.

0:17:430:17:44

As has William as well.

0:17:440:17:46

They've been fantastic support.

0:17:460:17:47

And then my father as well,

we've had a couple...

0:17:470:17:49

No, more than that.

0:17:490:17:51

A handful of teas and meetings

and all sorts of gatherings

0:17:510:17:54

over at his place as well,

so the family together have been

0:17:540:18:00

absolutely solid support,

and my grandparents as well have

0:18:000:18:03

been wonderful throughout this whole

process, and have known

0:18:030:18:06

for quite some time,

so how they haven't told anybody is,

0:18:060:18:10

again, a miracle in itself.

0:18:100:18:13

The whole family have come

together and have been

0:18:130:18:16

a huge amount of support.

0:18:160:18:17

They've been amazing.

0:18:170:18:18

And, Meghan, your parents?

0:18:180:18:19

Do you think, you know,

while very happy for you,

0:18:190:18:22

obviously, are they worried

at all about the scale

0:18:220:18:25

of what you're getting into?

0:18:250:18:27

I'm sure in the onset,

both my parents and my close

0:18:270:18:31

friends were concerned,

because we got very quickly swept up

0:18:310:18:34

in a media storm that was not part

of my life before that.

0:18:340:18:40

But they also had never seen me

so happy, and I think also

0:18:400:18:45

once my friends were able to

really meet Harry, and my mom,

0:18:450:18:51

who we spend a lot of time with,

who is so much fun.

0:18:510:18:54

Your mum's amazing.

0:18:540:18:56

It was just obvious that no matter

what we were being put through,

0:18:560:19:02

that it was just temporary,

and that we were going to be able

0:19:020:19:06

to get through that,

so everyone was really happy.

0:19:060:19:09

He's talked to my dad a few times.

0:19:090:19:11

He hasn't been able to meet him just

yet, but it's all been

0:19:110:19:14

worth every effort.

0:19:140:19:16

And your ring?

0:19:160:19:19

Tell us about your ring.

0:19:190:19:22

The ring is obviously yellow gold,

because that's her favourite,

0:19:220:19:27

and the main stone itself I sourced

from Botswana, and the little

0:19:270:19:32

diamonds either side

are from my mother's jewellery

0:19:320:19:35

collection, to make sure

that she is with us on this

0:19:350:19:38

crazy journey together.

0:19:380:19:42

It's beautiful.

0:19:420:19:43

And he designed it.

0:19:430:19:44

It's incredible.

0:19:440:19:46

Yeah.

0:19:460:19:47

Make sure it stays on that finger!

0:19:470:19:49

Of course.

0:19:490:19:51

What does it mean to you, Meghan,

to have those stones on your finger

0:19:510:19:54

that once belonged to

Princess Diana?

0:19:540:19:57

I think everything about Harry's

thoughtfulness and the inclusion

0:19:570:20:04

of that, and obviously not

being able to meet his mom,

0:20:040:20:07

it's so important to me to know that

she's a part of this with us,

0:20:070:20:13

and I think in being

able to meet his aunts,

0:20:130:20:21

and also like Julia,

and just different people

0:20:210:20:23

who were so important to his mom,

and able to in some way know part

0:20:230:20:27

of her through them,

and of course through him.

0:20:270:20:31

It's incredibly special

to be able to have this,

0:20:310:20:33

which sort of links where

you come from, and Botswana,

0:20:330:20:36

which is important to us.

0:20:360:20:37

It's perfect.

0:20:370:20:40

What do you think your mother

would have thought of Meghan,

0:20:400:20:42

or said about Meghan?

0:20:420:20:43

They'd be thick as thieves,

without question.

0:20:430:20:47

I mean, she would be over the moon,

jumping up and down,

0:20:470:20:50

so excited for me, but then,

would probably have been best

0:20:500:20:55

friends with Meghan,

so it is days like today

0:20:550:21:00

when I really miss having her around

and being able to share the happy

0:21:000:21:04

news, but with the ring

and everything else that's going on,

0:21:040:21:07

I'm sure she's with us, you know,

jumping up and down somewhere else.

0:21:070:21:12

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle,

thank you both very much.

0:21:120:21:16

Thank you so much.

0:21:160:21:17

Thank you.

0:21:170:21:23

APPLAUSE What a couple.

That was so

lovely.

Is not necessarily what was

0:21:230:21:35

said, but the way it was said, and

they way they were looking at each

0:21:350:21:39

other.

And holding each other's

hands.

And finishing each other's

0:21:390:21:44

sentences. Mishal, you were there

before the cameras started rolling.

0:21:440:21:50

What sort of sense did you get of

them as a couple?

I had a bit of

0:21:500:21:55

time with them ahead of us recording

the interview, so we talked a bit in

0:21:550:22:00

that time as well. The overall

impression I came away with...

0:22:000:22:04

Clearly, you can see they are couple

very much in love, which you can see

0:22:040:22:09

with the body language. This was a

couple who had to decide really

0:22:090:22:14

early on in their relationship,

after a couple of dates, whether

0:22:140:22:23

this had potential. When Prince

Harry said they had to do things the

0:22:230:22:26

other way round, not out on dates,

but home alone together, trying to

0:22:260:22:28

work out whether this person is

worth putting that much time into. I

0:22:280:22:32

was struck by the amount of time

they had put into what it means to

0:22:320:22:37

be together, not just for the two of

them, but of course they are going

0:22:370:22:41

to have a very public aspect of

their lives.

Meghan comes across as

0:22:410:22:47

calm, collected and composed. But

what is the reality? What does the

0:22:470:22:52

future hold and how will she prepare

for it?

I was struck by the fact

0:22:520:22:56

that both of them said that the

amount of scrutiny on their

0:22:560:23:00

relationship took them both by

surprise. Prince Harry has grown up

0:23:000:23:04

with it, and Meghan Markle has had a

certain amount of success as an

0:23:040:23:09

actress, but nothing really prepared

them for it. They've got the rest of

0:23:090:23:13

their lives where this will be a

fact of their lives. This is just

0:23:130:23:17

the beginning. But I was struck by

their sense of purpose. They both

0:23:170:23:22

have causes they care about. We know

about his, but she has been a UN

0:23:220:23:28

ambassador and has done trips to the

developing world. We don't know what

0:23:280:23:32

they are going to put their focus

on, but I think they will harness

0:23:320:23:37

their energies towards the causes

they care about. They are going to

0:23:370:23:41

focus on each other, but I think we

are going to see a lot of them.

Just

0:23:410:23:48

a great couple.

The charisma. You

are getting swept up! Young love.

0:23:480:23:55

The good news is...

0:23:550:23:58

It's time again...

When we reveal the short list

0:23:580:24:01

for this year's Sports

Personality of the Year.

0:24:010:24:02

Sir Andy Murray won it last year.

0:24:020:24:04

Gabby, how many in

the running this year?

0:24:040:24:07

12 names for your

consideration and -

0:24:070:24:09

in alphabetical order -

here are the first four...

0:24:090:24:15

Elise Christie - The Ice Queen,

speed skater, Elise.

0:24:150:24:21

She became a triple world champion

in March. Sir Mo Farah claimed his

0:24:210:24:28

tenth gold in London. Chris Froome

won his fourth Tour de France in

0:24:280:24:34

2017. Lewis Hamilton won his fourth

Formula One world title in October.

0:24:340:24:43

There's four. Off to a flying start

already. Let's start with Elise.

She

0:24:430:24:50

has won three golds on a world

stage. She had a terrible Sochi and

0:24:500:24:54

was disqualified from all her races.

She received death threats. She has

0:24:540:24:59

already won the Sunday Times

sportswoman of the year.

And we have

0:24:590:25:03

Sir Mo Farah.

He has finished his

track career with his tenth global

0:25:030:25:08

gold. Will he make it onto the

podium this year with white and

0:25:080:25:14

Chris Froome. To win four Tour de

Frances, and then to win the

0:25:140:25:22

Valletta, he is a phenomenal racer,

with an incredible, steely

0:25:220:25:27

determination, and cycling is always

popular.

Lewis Hamilton has won

0:25:270:25:31

before.

He has, and if he wins

again, he will join Nigel Mansell as

0:25:310:25:37

being a motor racing driver to win

the award twice. It is a sport that

0:25:370:25:42

galvanises the votes. It is only

five motor racers who have done

0:25:420:25:46

that.

There are 12 in all. Let's

have a look at the next four.

0:25:460:25:54

Anthony Joshua saw him unify several

boxing titles with his win over

0:25:540:26:02

Wladimir Klitschko. Harry Kane was

top scorer once again in the 2016-17

0:26:020:26:07

season. It was a great year for

Johanna Konta, who won the Miami

0:26:070:26:13

open and reached the Wimbledon

semifinals. Jonnie Peacock won gold

0:26:130:26:16

yet again in front of a home crowd

in London in the para athletics.

0:26:160:26:27

Anthony Joshua, first of all, has

had an incredible year. A really

0:26:270:26:31

quick rise to stardom.

He was an

amateur in 2012 at the Olympics,

0:26:310:26:35

when he won the gold there. He's

taken it very steadily and has not

0:26:350:26:40

done too many fights. It's an

incredible rise over the four years,

0:26:400:26:44

but now he's sitting on top of the

heap, and I think will be there for

0:26:440:26:48

a long time.

On to football, and

Harry Kane.

Footballers don't do too

0:26:480:26:56

well in Sports Personality of the

Year. Ryan Giggs was the last to win

0:26:560:27:01

in 2009. But Harry Kane is an

old-fashioned centre forward in his

0:27:010:27:04

attitude and the way he plays.

Johanna Konta has had an amazing

0:27:040:27:09

career.

She has had a really good

year as well. Semifinals at

0:27:090:27:15

Wimbledon, winning the Miami open.

She has the confidence to go on and

0:27:150:27:19

take these big titles as well.

Surely Strictly will have helped

0:27:190:27:23

with Jonnie Peacock.

We have had so

much success with para athletics,

0:27:230:27:31

but he is at the vanguard.

World record-holder Adam Peaty took

0:27:310:27:37

gold in the World Championships in

the 50 metre breaststroke in

0:27:370:27:39

Hungary. Johnny Weir clinched three

successive world Superbike titles.

0:27:390:27:48

England's women won the Cricket

World Cup in July, and bowler Anya

0:27:480:27:53

Shrubsole was the star. Bianca

Walkden claimed her second

0:27:530:27:58

successive world title at the world

taekwondo Grand Prix.

A good line up

0:27:580:28:05

again. Adam Peaty, world

record-holder.

He broke the world

0:28:050:28:09

record price on the way to the

title, and he backed up his Olympic

0:28:090:28:13

gold from last year. He's a very

charismatic, likeable guy.

Could

0:28:130:28:19

Johnny Riera be a bit of a dark

horse?

He has a huge fan base in

0:28:190:28:26

Northern Ireland. It is not a sport

that gets a lot of attention, but

0:28:260:28:32

Johnny will be good.

And Johanna

Konta and Bianca Walkden.

Two great

0:28:320:28:37

women to finish it off. I think it

is a cracking 12.

There your

0:28:370:28:43

line-up.

0:28:430:28:46

As Gabby said, Sports

Personality of the Year

0:28:460:28:48

will be on Sunday 17th December

on BBC One.

0:28:480:28:50

I'll be back with Alex tomorrow

and we'll be talking to music star,

0:28:500:28:54

Dizzee Rascal.

0:28:540:28:55

Congratulations to Harry and Meghan!
