Hello and welcome to a packed Friday One Show with Angela Scanlon. And | :00:21. | :00:27.
the ever dependable Richard Osman. I think I am more maverick than that. | :00:28. | :00:32.
Take That will be playing us into the weekend with a song from their | :00:33. | :00:36.
new album. 25 years after their first it. | :00:37. | :00:42.
# It only takes a minute, girl # To fall in love... | :00:43. | :00:48.
# Never forget where you're coming from... | :00:49. | :00:55.
# Have a little patience ... # Going to live for these days... | :00:56. | :01:08.
And we asked joined by two stars of a new busy comedy drama Decline And | :01:09. | :01:15.
Fall. This character is described as a money grabbing lunatic scholar. | :01:16. | :01:18.
Her character is simply manly and gregarious. David Suchet and Gemma | :01:19. | :01:23.
Whelan, everyone! APPLAUSE | :01:24. | :01:30.
Welcome. Today, you may or may not know, is National Kindness Day. Have | :01:31. | :01:36.
you had anyone been particularly nice to you today? Yes, the car I | :01:37. | :01:41.
got into this morning was driven by somebody who turned round and said, | :01:42. | :01:44.
this is National Kindness Day and I'm going to give you a big smile. | :01:45. | :01:49.
And I want you to give me one back. So I did. That's my act of kindness. | :01:50. | :01:59.
That's absolutely true. What about you, Gemma? I didn't know it was | :02:00. | :02:03.
National Kindness Day but I was given a free cup of tea by a coffee | :02:04. | :02:08.
shop, brand unnamed. I thought that was quite kind. You would think it | :02:09. | :02:15.
would be a free cup of coffee at a coffee shop. As of tomorrow, the way | :02:16. | :02:18.
that friends and family communicate with loved ones in the Armed Forces | :02:19. | :02:25.
abroad will change. The technology has constantly been updated but the | :02:26. | :02:31.
message has remained much the same. Occasionally I went wrote and wrote | :02:32. | :02:39.
two letters in a wig. We have had lots of e-blueys coming through and | :02:40. | :02:42.
it was fantastic getting mail. Just thought you needed. Reed even just | :02:43. | :02:47.
looking at the e-bluey without reading it, it's just got more and | :02:48. | :02:54.
more special. I first came across e-blueys in the Gulf War in the 1990 | :02:55. | :02:58.
and you had to wait a couple of weeks before you got a reply. When I | :02:59. | :03:04.
went back in 2005, we wrote as many e-blueys as we could to our family | :03:05. | :03:11.
and we got replies immediately. The system is effectively a cross | :03:12. | :03:13.
between an e-mail and a letter sent through a website, print it out in | :03:14. | :03:18.
the fighting theatre and conveyed to the soldier as a letter. In the | :03:19. | :03:22.
Second World War, the Erick Rowan was used extensively and the paper | :03:23. | :03:29.
was blue. In November 2012, my husband was deployed to Afghanistan. | :03:30. | :03:35.
We had been married for about 12 months. Finding I was pregnant two | :03:36. | :03:39.
weeks after he left was a bit surprising. I wasn't prepared at | :03:40. | :03:45.
all. E-blueys meant that we could share the information and the news | :03:46. | :03:49.
quickly. If there was a scandal coming up or a midwife appointment, | :03:50. | :03:55.
it made it so much easier. When Gary went to Afghanistan he was 51 and we | :03:56. | :04:00.
had been together for over 20 years and we had five daughters. The nine | :04:01. | :04:07.
slicks -- the e-blueys was a real life-saver because I couldn't bring | :04:08. | :04:12.
him in Afghanistan. I sent them everyday and I felt I was supporting | :04:13. | :04:17.
him, taking him away from Afghanistan for the time it took to | :04:18. | :04:20.
read the letter. It doesn't what is going on. You get your mail and you | :04:21. | :04:27.
can just immediately travelled back to being at home with your family. | :04:28. | :04:33.
When I found out we were having twins, I decided e-blueys was | :04:34. | :04:39.
definitely the way to put this out there and to make sure he believed | :04:40. | :04:43.
me. Thinking that sending a scan picture would make it really clear, | :04:44. | :04:47.
like, we definitely are, I'm not joking! In the scan, you could see | :04:48. | :04:53.
both of their hearts beating. So much pride. We did it, the best | :04:54. | :04:57.
thing we've ever done, except for the chocolate brownies. Within 24 | :04:58. | :05:04.
hours, he phoned. He thought it was a joke, but I really wasn't joking. | :05:05. | :05:11.
Seven months on tour, a perfect way of avoiding his pregnant wife for | :05:12. | :05:12.
seven months! I said in the photo, which was | :05:13. | :05:28.
probably the last photo we had together. It's the last thing that I | :05:29. | :05:32.
wrote him. Me and my gorgeous husband, and I can't wait to get my | :05:33. | :05:37.
hands on you. I love you, your loving wife, always, Jacqui. He | :05:38. | :05:40.
probably got that before he went out. If it was the final letter he | :05:41. | :05:47.
was ever going to read, I am glad that I sent him this one. I kept | :05:48. | :05:53.
every single letter that he said to me, and it will be something that I | :05:54. | :05:57.
will share with the grandchildren, part of his legacy and how wonderful | :05:58. | :06:08.
grandad was. Thank you so much to Jenn, Tim and Jacqui for sharing | :06:09. | :06:11.
their stories. The Ministry of Defence will be launching its | :06:12. | :06:15.
replacement for the e-bluey tomorrow, called Imail INtouch. | :06:16. | :06:23.
Decline And Fall starts tonight on BBC One based on the Evelyn Waugh | :06:24. | :06:26.
novel which hasn't been filmed on TV before. Can you give us a beginners | :06:27. | :06:31.
guide? David told me what to say backstage! Paul Pennyfeather is | :06:32. | :06:38.
unfairly dismissed from a college at Oxford University for indecent | :06:39. | :06:41.
exposure and is shipped out to a castle school in Wales where he | :06:42. | :06:47.
meets David, the headmaster, Dr Fagan, and his favourite daughter, | :06:48. | :06:52.
Dingy. Paul Pennyfeather falls in love with one of the parents and | :06:53. | :06:54.
what happens next goes from bad to worse. It gets quite dreadful in a | :06:55. | :07:03.
very comical way. We can have a little luck. I thought you did | :07:04. | :07:06.
great! Lets see when both your characters are introduced. Also, | :07:07. | :07:15.
another familiar face. I hope that you brought some soap and boot | :07:16. | :07:19.
polish and pens and paper. I'm afraid I didn't. Father, I told you | :07:20. | :07:25.
to tell him that the masters are not supplied with those luxuries. It | :07:26. | :07:32.
slipped my mind. I can get some. I have put you in charge of the fifth | :07:33. | :07:38.
form. You will find them delightful boys, quite delightful. I have also | :07:39. | :07:42.
put you in charge of games, carpentry and the fire drill. The | :07:43. | :07:49.
fire escape is very dangerous and never to be used, even in an | :07:50. | :07:51.
emergency. APPLAUSE | :07:52. | :08:00.
We watched the first episode and it is brilliant. We haven't you -- we | :08:01. | :08:05.
had seen you doing comedy for a long time. It was terrific fun. It's | :08:06. | :08:10.
nearly 30 years since I had a chance to actually be in a comedy. The last | :08:11. | :08:16.
thing was Blot On The Landscape in the mid-80s. Is that your choice? | :08:17. | :08:22.
Because you are brilliant at it. Thank you. I think it is just what | :08:23. | :08:28.
comes on the table. I started tomorrow in 1987, 1988, and then I | :08:29. | :08:33.
started doing heavy dramas in between and theatre work, and it | :08:34. | :08:37.
didn't come my way. It's ironic because, having finished Pyro, I am | :08:38. | :08:41.
suddenly finding myself being asked to do comedy again, and having a | :08:42. | :08:46.
wonderful time. It looked like a lot of fun to film. Gemma, your entry | :08:47. | :08:54.
was slightly different, to stand up as Chastity Butterworth. Yes. Oh, | :08:55. | :09:06.
there she is! It was lovely to be seen for a comedy drama like this. I | :09:07. | :09:13.
was pleased. It an incredible cast, surrounded by familiar faces | :09:14. | :09:17.
everywhere. We can see a few. I am sure... Jack Whitehall. Vincent | :09:18. | :09:28.
Franklin. Did you have fun on set? A bit too much. I I was let out. I was | :09:29. | :09:34.
actually standing by the camera, watching a scene, and I enjoyed it | :09:35. | :09:38.
so much I started laughing and I was thrown off the set to the naughty | :09:39. | :09:42.
boys corner. It was wonderful, and we were such a close company | :09:43. | :09:46.
together. It was a real treat. It felt like a holiday. In Wales, a | :09:47. | :09:55.
nice, quite rainy holiday. And it's so funny, even though it is black | :09:56. | :10:00.
humour and satire. I think that we do that very well. So many people | :10:01. | :10:04.
get to act drunk as well but that looks amazing. But it is acting. | :10:05. | :10:13.
Absolutely. There is a lot of hype about Game Of Thrones. Can you feel | :10:14. | :10:18.
the madness welling up? There was a trailer teased a while ago, which | :10:19. | :10:23.
was animated, and now there is a proper one with the characters. I | :10:24. | :10:27.
think people have gone mad for it, as they always do. It begins to | :10:28. | :10:33.
brew. Two people recognise you? You don't look exactly like her. I wish | :10:34. | :10:40.
that was me! Yeah, there we go. A bit wet and dirty. Yara Greyjoy is | :10:41. | :10:48.
an immense character. I adore her and how you play her. What was the | :10:49. | :10:54.
attraction? To be asked to do such a show in the first place was hugely | :10:55. | :10:58.
attractive. It's exciting to get an audition for an HBO show. When I got | :10:59. | :11:04.
the script, as many women would, I really related to her strength and | :11:05. | :11:08.
boldness and her friend but its decision-making. It was really | :11:09. | :11:12.
exciting to get my teeth into a role where I felt I could relate to it. I | :11:13. | :11:17.
think we all have elements, all colours to our personality, and to | :11:18. | :11:20.
turn the volume up on more of the independent, strong, wilful woman | :11:21. | :11:26.
that we all are is a real pleasure. We appreciate your portrayal. As I | :11:27. | :11:31.
mentioned earlier, it is national quite this day, so, Richard, I got | :11:32. | :11:38.
you a little card. -- National Kindness Day. Roses are red, violets | :11:39. | :11:43.
are blue, we all think Matt Baker's more talented than you. That is a | :11:44. | :11:48.
little bit rude. You should have seen the other one is! Route cards | :11:49. | :11:53.
are proving more popular on shop shelves these days. -- rude cards. | :11:54. | :12:01.
Esther headed to the streets to find out if everyone gets the joke. | :12:02. | :12:07.
I have got a handful of these cards, they are rather rude, and I would | :12:08. | :12:16.
ask people what they think of them and whether they think that shops | :12:17. | :12:20.
should have parental guidance signs up. Blimey. If I sent you that, on | :12:21. | :12:25.
your birthday, what would you say? A bit rude. Are you easily shocked? | :12:26. | :12:34.
Sometimes. Oh, that's too much. That's too much. Cards are meant to | :12:35. | :12:42.
be funny, to lighten your day off. That's a bit below the belt. You | :12:43. | :12:49.
have a really naughty laugh. Nothing wrong with that! Are you | :12:50. | :12:59.
broad-minded? Yes, and dirty minded. That's a bit rude. It did make you | :13:00. | :13:04.
laugh. It did, but it's not very acceptable. Hang on, that a boring | :13:05. | :13:10.
one. You are looking for a dirty one! ... That, I've no idea what it | :13:11. | :13:17.
means. I know. Does it mean something naughty? Very naughty. I | :13:18. | :13:25.
don't like that. You think having parental guidance in card shops is a | :13:26. | :13:30.
good idea? Personally I think it's common sense. I think it's terrible. | :13:31. | :13:39.
A lot of these can be too rude. Why do people do it? It's an insult. I'd | :13:40. | :13:44.
send that to my worst enemy. How would you feel if you got that? | :13:45. | :13:51.
Offended. I sent a lot of cards to my grandmother but I wouldn't send | :13:52. | :14:01.
that! Break. According to Esther, that is the most fun she has said | :14:02. | :14:04.
filming in 25 years, and brilliant as ever. Also brilliant as ever, | :14:05. | :14:09.
Take That! APPLAUSE | :14:10. | :14:18.
That was a little film about very rude cards. Have you ever had the | :14:19. | :14:25.
need to send anyone to anybody? I love route cards. When I'm having a | :14:26. | :14:29.
bad day, I go and stand in a card shop. It cheers me up. That is | :14:30. | :14:35.
tragic. Gentlemen, welcome to the One Show. You have a new album, the | :14:36. | :14:39.
first that you have written and recorded as a 3-piece. How has it | :14:40. | :14:44.
been? It's been really nice. The last time that we made a record, we | :14:45. | :14:49.
had Jason and we didn't know whether he was in or out, so it was tricky | :14:50. | :14:54.
to make. We were finding our feet as a trio. But we felt, when we went on | :14:55. | :14:58.
tour and you came to see us, Richard, kindly, we had a great time | :14:59. | :15:04.
and we really felt confident and, all of a sudden, we feel we have | :15:05. | :15:09.
become a 3-piece. We wanted to get back straight into the studio to | :15:10. | :15:13.
make a record. So this is harmony? Oh yeah. You don't sound social! It | :15:14. | :15:21.
was confirmed when we went on tour and we found our feet as a 3-piece. | :15:22. | :15:27.
We both went to see your tour, not together. You went with Matt Baker. | :15:28. | :15:31.
But it was sensational, you really put on a show. What have you got for | :15:32. | :15:37.
us with this album? The tour is in five weeks, May the 5th. Anything | :15:38. | :15:48.
special up your sleeves? Can I leave you guys? I don't feel very well. | :15:49. | :15:53.
Excuse me. Are you all right? You will be performing in the round this | :15:54. | :15:58.
time. And so you know Adele gets wheeled in in a box to avoid... | :15:59. | :16:05.
Being seen. We are not going to be doing that. It feels a bit weird | :16:06. | :16:13.
that Gary has disappeared. I hope he's OK. Bless him. But you are used | :16:14. | :16:21.
to dipping in and out. It will be me next! Do you mind if I just...? | :16:22. | :16:26.
And that's the story of how Howard became Take That. | :16:27. | :16:37.
CHEERING Come on back in, Mark. Come on. Sit | :16:38. | :16:44.
down. Gem is a big fan of you particularly. So we don't want to - | :16:45. | :16:48.
you know, she wants to keep you at a close distance. Massive fan. It was | :16:49. | :16:53.
when you did the caterpillar. It did it for you. Do you remember? It was | :16:54. | :16:59.
the clincher. I really wish I could now get on the floor and do. It I | :17:00. | :17:03.
haven't done it for so long, I'm a bit worried I make a bit a fool of | :17:04. | :17:07.
yourself. I think now you've had your kids you could do it. You won't | :17:08. | :17:13.
damage anything. You used to do a high caterpillar. We have a clip of | :17:14. | :17:15.
you in action. APPLAUSE | :17:16. | :17:36.
I'm not sure that's natural. That is genuinely very impressive. I think | :17:37. | :17:39.
that would have made Gary even iller. We mentioned, 25 years since | :17:40. | :17:47.
your first song. Is there anything on the list that you'd like to do | :17:48. | :17:51.
that you haven't quite gotten to yet? There's quite a lot of things. | :17:52. | :17:55.
Actually it's more than 25 years. It's about 27, coming up to 28 | :17:56. | :17:59.
years. We've never actually celebrated that 25 years yet. But | :18:00. | :18:01.
there's going to be something in the pipeline. I think there's probably a | :18:02. | :18:06.
lot of places, we're going to Australia and New Zealand at the end | :18:07. | :18:09.
of this year. We've never toured in New Zealand. That's one of the | :18:10. | :18:12.
places we've never been. There's a lot of countries like Argentina | :18:13. | :18:15.
we've never toured. Those are on the list. You've sung, written and done | :18:16. | :18:21.
everything. Any other jobs left to do. I heard you wanted to direct, is | :18:22. | :18:26.
that right? It is, yes. It's something I'd really like to do. I | :18:27. | :18:30.
got papers for signing up for London film school. I haven't filled them | :18:31. | :18:35.
in yet. I still have them in my drawer. I'd love to do it. I said to | :18:36. | :18:39.
the lads though about maybe directing one of our future videos. | :18:40. | :18:44.
I'd like to do that. I got tumble weeds in the dressing room. It was | :18:45. | :18:49.
just like, all silence. He's worried about how many days you would make | :18:50. | :18:54.
us work. Are you the slave driver? No, I'm not going to say yes, | :18:55. | :18:57.
because everybody's going to blame me. Poor Gary is exhausted! We have | :18:58. | :19:03.
two of Britain's finest actors here who would adore to be in a Take That | :19:04. | :19:07.
video. David, you're an enormous fan. Enormous! | :19:08. | :19:20.
George has a film about the rarest of insects. | :19:21. | :19:31.
During summer, the cliff faces of our coastline are dotted with some | :19:32. | :19:38.
incredible miniature structures. I've come down to Devon in search of | :19:39. | :19:42.
an amazing animal architect that excels in the creation of beautiful | :19:43. | :19:47.
home skierior. Tiny chimneys up to three centimetres long. They're the | :19:48. | :19:54.
creation of the spiny mason moth nicknamed the chimney wasp. Each | :19:55. | :19:59.
chimney is the entrance to an underground nest, where a female | :20:00. | :20:03.
raises her young. To find out more about these amazing insects, I've | :20:04. | :20:09.
met up with my friend naturalist Jon Walters who has been studying a wasp | :20:10. | :20:17.
colony here for two years. I've got a question, why should the wasps go | :20:18. | :20:21.
to all this trouble to make that structure? There's a few | :20:22. | :20:26.
suggestions, maybe that it's to keep rain off. One other theory is that | :20:27. | :20:31.
it's actually a ventilation system, so when this gets baked by the | :20:32. | :20:37.
mid-summer sun this time of year, it actually acts to cool down the | :20:38. | :20:44.
provisions of the larvae inside. Cameraman Mark is capturing the | :20:45. | :20:48.
architectural feats with his specialist lenses. First, the female | :20:49. | :20:54.
selects a bank or cliff of clay-rich mud. She then visits a nearby pud | :20:55. | :21:01.
toll collect water, which she moistens and softens the clay | :21:02. | :21:05.
allowing her to extra investigate the underground chamber where she | :21:06. | :21:09.
lays her legs. The extra investigated pellets are used to | :21:10. | :21:18.
build the external chimney. As well as construction work, the female has | :21:19. | :21:24.
to go hunting. She visits the local vegetation in search of weavil grubs | :21:25. | :21:26.
which are fed to the developing young. While the female's away, her | :21:27. | :21:34.
chimney is left unprotected and vulnerable to visits from a rather | :21:35. | :21:42.
striking intruder, the cook coo wasp who seeks to take advantage of the | :21:43. | :21:48.
indust Reece chimney wasp. These are parasitic. They lay their eggs in | :21:49. | :21:52.
the nests of other species. These richly coloured creatures are often | :21:53. | :21:58.
referred to as jewel wasps. They fly very near the chimneys trying to | :21:59. | :22:02.
spot a female in the process of establishing a nest. They then sit | :22:03. | :22:07.
nearby and they watch and wait until the host wasp has flown off and at | :22:08. | :22:12.
that point, they take the opportunity to sneak inside unseen. | :22:13. | :22:25.
John shows what happens when a cookoo wasp leaves the nest. It | :22:26. | :22:29.
crawls in via the chimney and go inside the burrow. What the cockoo | :22:30. | :22:39.
wasp is after is a full groan larvae. Then -- grown larvae. Then | :22:40. | :22:50.
it will hatch and it will be a grub that attached itself to the chimney | :22:51. | :22:56.
wasps varve yay and suck out -- larvae, and suck out the inside. | :22:57. | :23:03.
Then it spins a cocoon and remain until the next year. The chimney | :23:04. | :23:07.
building mason wasp seems to be thriving, at least on this beach. | :23:08. | :23:15.
This fragile chimney will slowly disintegrate, battered by wind and | :23:16. | :23:21.
rain. The larvae will come out in the spring and the cycle will begin | :23:22. | :23:25.
again. Good news, Gary is OK. He's still | :23:26. | :23:28.
going to be performing. He's over there. | :23:29. | :23:36.
APPLAUSE David, you have had a very busy | :23:37. | :23:40.
couple of months. I have. Not just doing the project that we talked | :23:41. | :23:45.
about. I fulfilled a lifelong ambition as an actor. I'm going to | :23:46. | :23:52.
be in Doctor Who. Yes! Your dream. I can't tell you anything about it at | :23:53. | :23:58.
all, except that you will not recognise me very easily. I said yes | :23:59. | :24:01.
before I read the script. Quite right. I bet he's a baddie. It was | :24:02. | :24:11.
whatever. The time of my life. Peter Capaldi (inaudible) You can hear how | :24:12. | :24:16.
much people are cheering for you. They love this idea. Yes, thank you. | :24:17. | :24:22.
We recently saw you in the Moorside, it was a huge hit. How was that to | :24:23. | :24:27.
film? The team was incredible behind the whole thing, they've won BAFTAs | :24:28. | :24:31.
for their work before. It was a great safe set of hands to be in. It | :24:32. | :24:35.
was a really challenging but brilliant thing to be part of. I'm | :24:36. | :24:40.
really proud of it. Something completely removed, the Crowd. | :24:41. | :24:43.
You're doing that at the moment. Can't say any more about that. | :24:44. | :24:48.
A big thank you to our guests tonight, you can see David and Gemma | :24:49. | :24:51.
