Today's our first day at London Fashion Week. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
We're here, we're getting ready, we've got a top team. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
They end up making this look OK! | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
London Fashion Week is an amazing showcase | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
for the best British designers. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
So, over the next few days, we're going to three different shows - | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
SIBLING, Hunter and Giles. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
And we're going to show you what makes them so special. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
And we're going to get up close and personal | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
with some of the actual pieces that are hot off the runway. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
I think, growing up, I always wanted to wear designer clothes. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
I was always looking through magazines, saying, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
"I want that, I want that,", but I didn't have the money. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
I would find the high street version of, or a vintage version of. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
As I've grown up, and I'm working hard and earning more money, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
I can afford these high-end pieces. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
But I'm still a Scouser, and I'm born and bred to bargain hunt. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
So it does hurt me, spending a lot of money on clothes! | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
I like to be quite savvy with pieces I'm buying. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
If I am going to buy, it will be something that's timeless, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
a wardrobe staple that you can wear forever. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
They do make you feel incredible. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
There is something about a high-end piece that does make you feel great. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
MUSIC: First Contact by Lab Of Music | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
Yeah, it's just like anything goes in Fashion Week. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
But I imagine some people just dress up for the week, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
and then, next week, go back to wearing their normal clothes. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
We're en route to SIBLING. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
SIBLING is an amazing show, it's so exciting, it's one to watch. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
It's a tongue-in-cheek, vibrant, anything-goes kind of show. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
They're known for their knitwear. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
They started out with menswear and they wanted to make men | 0:01:58 | 0:02:03
feel like they had more options than the grandad knit. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
A few years ago, they started womenswear, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
and the show is always fantastic, it's one of my favourites. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
Anything goes, any material. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
They use mohair, PVC, all kinds of wool. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
And they're really, really creative. And it's a special show to be at. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
Originally, SIBLING was a trio of designers, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
and, horrendously, Joe passed away a few months ago. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
And it was their last collection as a three. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
So it is going to be a bit of a bittersweet occasion today. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
A celebration of his work, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
but also I think there'll be a few teary eyes in the building today. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
-Hi! How are you? -Very well, thanks. -You OK? | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
We're here, we're at the SIBLING show. It looks great. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
Last year was all about '80s vibe, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
Fun, girly, giant bows, think Madonna. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
And I can't wait to see what they've got in store for us today. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
# Do you recall, not long ago | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
# We would walk on the sidewalk | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
# Innocent, remember? | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
# All we did was care for each other | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
# But the night was warm | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
# We were bold and young | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
# All around the wind blows | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
# We would only hold on to let go | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
# Blow a kiss, fire a gun | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
# We need someone to lean on | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
# Blow a kiss, fire a gun | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
# All we need is somebody to lean on | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
# Blow a kiss, fire a gun | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
# We need someone to lean on | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
# Blow a kiss, fire a gun | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
# All we need is somebody to lean on. # | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
Oh, my God, it was amazing. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Fantastic show. The mix of the PVC with the crochet, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
with the beaded wool - it was just incredible. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
One of the members of SIBLING passed away, very sadly. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
I think it was probably a very emotional | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
show for a lot of people to see. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:24
It was great that it was very optimistic | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
and it ended with a very happy collection. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
I think the thing about fashion is that the name will | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
live on without him and it will be a testament to him. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
I'm really excited now, because I'm going to go backstage | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
and get me hands on a piece of that gorgeousness. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
-Hot off the catwalk! -Here you go! -Let's have a look. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
-THEY GASP Oh, wow. -How gorgeous is that? | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Amazing. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
Let's see what they've given us. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
Ah, God, this is actually one of my favourite pieces out of the show. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
This beautiful, honeycombed crochet. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:13
Beautiful maxi dress. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
Big thigh split, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
and it's just fabulous for over a bikini, summer party. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:23
I love it. The quality is just fantastic, and all this detail. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
It's not like a flimsy crochet, there's quite a chunkiness to it. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
It just feels so luxurious. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
And it definitely comes under the high-end category. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
Gorgeous. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
Can't wait to see what this feels like on. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43

Let me think about high end. High end? | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
I would say it's special, quality, lasting. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
Money, money, money, money, money. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
High end is those labels we all really, really aspire to. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
It's not about price, it's just about something that's incredibly | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
luxurious and something that suits your needs and fits your life. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
Doesn't need to be expensive, it needs to be special and different. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
Sometimes, you're paying for the most incredible dress. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
You know, it's an amazing dress that transcends mere dressdom. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
It's got to speak to the person who's looking at it. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
It's got to be sold at the right price. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
There's a lot more to it now than just writing down, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
"We are a high-end brand." | 0:06:54 | 0:06:55

So Fashion Week this year is in Soho, which is great. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
But it's a pain, because you have to walk everywhere. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
Especially in these shoes. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
So now we're off to Fashion East. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
It's a presentation created by a group of designers, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
and it's an amazing initiative that supports up-and-coming talent | 0:07:19 | 0:07:25
and showcases their collections. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
This is the perfect place to find out what it takes | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
to become a high-end designer. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
Wouldn't it be well better to just sack this all off | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
and just sit in there and eat cakes? | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
SHE LAUGHS | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
Pfft! | 0:07:44 | 0:07:45 | |
And think it's just up here, I can see a crowd, so must be it. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
This is Lulu, she's the founder of Fashion East, | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
and the godmother of fashion. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
-Godfather. -Godfather of fashion. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
I know you've established millions of designers through Fashion East, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
like some of our favourites, like Jonny Saunders and Henry Holland... | 0:08:31 | 0:08:37
-Roksanda. -Roksanda. What are you looking for? | 0:08:37 | 0:08:42
The thing about our designers is that they all have their very own, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
individual perspective. And we really encourage that. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
We never try to kind of... | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
You know, tidy things up too much, because I think part of it is about | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
they're learning what their brand is and what the signature is. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
And Fashion East is a place where you can experiment. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
And it is a big deal for them, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:01
and, hopefully, they'll go on to have really good businesses. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
-They've got to work really hard, it's tough. -Yeah. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
But, you know, that thing... | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
If you create a desirable product and can sell it at the right price, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
that's it. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:13
MUSIC: Style by Taylor Swift | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
I've got no time to go and get changed for the next show, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
so, public loo, all very glamorous. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
I'll be out in a sec. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
Daa-dah! | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
And we're off to Hunter. Let's go. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
Obviously, everyone knows Hunter as the wellies. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
It's English, heritage, very posh. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
But Hunter Original is their high-end catwalk range. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
And I'm loving it. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:54
It's really cool, like, this jacket, this neoprene, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
welly-ish jacket. It's cool. And I'm a huge fan of these welly boots. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:02
I think, having a husband who's 6' 7", | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
nice walk in the park in the mud, doesn't matter, | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
because you've got your heeled wellies on. It's great! | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
I love them. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
The new creative director of Hunter is Alasdhair Willis, | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
he's Stella McCartney's husband. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
It's the show to be at. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:21
It attracts the really high-end, fashiony stars. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
Like Anna Wintour... You know, we're going today... | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29

MUSIC: Power by Kanye West | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
I suppose Hunter is at the high end of the kind of boots | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
you wear down on the farm. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53
But these days, they're not just worn in the country, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
they're worn in the town, that's the great difference | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
that this new branding of Hunter has made. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
From the country to the city. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
Hunter is high end, because it's heritage, it's superhigh quality. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
It's something that the late Dowager, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
the Duchess of Devonshire, would wear, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
but also a cool, Pixie Geldof would wear to Glastonbury. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
I thought the show was incredible, | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
I actually felt like I was in a festival. We were in this giant tent. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:12
And it was just amazing. Really original. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
There's no doubt, that, because Alasdhair is married to "a famous person", | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
that this also makes a lot of difference. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
It's not just that we've all known him for a long time, | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
but also that he's bought into the whole glossy magazine world | 0:12:39 | 0:12:44
in a way that perhaps he would not have been | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
had he just arrived like that, cold. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
There's a whole aura built round Hunter, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
and that's what we're looking at. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
-Thank you. -Congratulations! -Thank you very much. -It was amazing. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
You know, everyone thinks of Hunter as an outdoorsy welly. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
Did you want to turn it high end? Was that your...? | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
Well, what I wanted to do was really... | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
The brand always had a huge amount of potential. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Everyone has a positive experience of Hunter. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
I just wanted to open that up | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
and really realise the potential of what it had. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
So what is the definition of high end to you? | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
It's always got to do with quality, really. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
It sounds pretty obvious and pretty boring, but I... | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
Quality has to be there in everything you do. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
And that's something that, you know... | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
Hunter's rubber boots, the original boots were £90. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
-For a rubber boot, that's quite an expensive product. -Yeah. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
But it's a very high-quality product and, everything we do, | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
we have to make sure we meet and raise the bar even higher. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
So I always look for quality and I always look for detail. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
And, if possible, unexpected detail. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
Detail that's in there that doesn't necessarily have to be. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-Like the little cap/hood thing that you've got going on? -Exactly. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
Yes, there's lots of little parts that are put into the pieces | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
that don't necessarily have to be there. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
But it gives you a story, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
and it gives the customer a reason to buy as well. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
-So detail and quality. -Perfect, thank you. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
-And I hear you've got something for me? -Oh, yes, where is it? | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Excited about this! | 0:14:30 | 0:14:31
There you go, hopefully you can get many | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
pleasurable hours at the festival out of those, Abbey. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
Thank you so much. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
Oh! We've got the gorgeous, powdery-coloured, tie-dye welly. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
Not your average welly. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
It's definitely different. Summery. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
I love it, I think it's cool. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
Oh, I love this, I remember this from the show. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
This beautiful, coloured, | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
it's almost fairytale, the colours they've used. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
Look at the detail. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:05
All these ruched sleeves, the big strings, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
even the wire in the hood. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
As you see, I'm always in black, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
so this colour's maybe a bit wacky for me, but it looks great. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
And this piece is so hot off the catwalk, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
it's even got mud still from the show on it. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
I am excited to try this on. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
And hopefully it comes in black, so I can buy one. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29

It's always such a big shock, he's constantly reinventing himself, | 0:16:31 | 0:16:35

He has the best models, he has the best production on the show. | 0:16:55 | 0:17:00
And it's just the perfect way to finish our little film. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:04
MUSIC: Get Innocuous! by LCD Soundsystem | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
He's a wonderful designer, because he's all about the glamour. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
He really understands luxury, he understands the luxury world. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
He understands that kind of woman, and there's a drama to it. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
He, again, is something that's really very London, | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
in that it's creative and whimsical and wild. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
And not afraid. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:45
It's unabashed, I would say, is a good word for Giles. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
This is an incredible venue. It's King Charles I's banqueting house. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:55
And I wouldn't expect anything less from Giles. Amazing! | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
Ooh, got to go in! | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
# There will be times | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
# The ground becomes your rest | 0:18:05 | 0:18:11
# And as you grow | 0:18:14 | 0:18:19
# You'll strike your mother's breast | 0:18:19 | 0:18:25
The really interesting thing with Giles' show | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
is that it's quite unlike anything else you see in London. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
What Giles does is really kind of borderline couture, and it's | 0:18:47 | 0:18:52
really focusing on that sense of occasion and pomp and circumstance. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
When you're buying a piece of high fashion, | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
it's about a story, it's about buying a stake in a story. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
Sometimes, with shows like Giles', I think the clothes are almost | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
kind of a memento of the event that you've been to. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
It's kind of like a wish-you-were-here postcard. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
That was just the most incredible show. I had goosebumps throughout. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:31
It was so spooky and eerie. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:32
And the dresses, the prints he used, the detail was just incredible. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:39
-Nice to meet you! -Yeah, what's your name? | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
-I'm going to ask you one question. -What's that, darling? | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
-I want to know what the word high end means to you? -High end? | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
-And how would you define it? -Oh, my God. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
-A polite way of describing high end? -Yes. -Yeah. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
-Or your way. -In the relation to clothes? -Yeah. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
-Not prostitutes. -Oh, OK. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
It's good to know these sort of things. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
Well, for me, high end is something that invokes a complete | 0:20:32 | 0:20:39
world of technique and artistry. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
And something very creative, something unique. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
Something you certainly can't get anywhere else. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
Something's that just very, very special. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
So, basically your entire collection? | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
Insane, that show. Absolutely... | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
I felt like I was in a magical, spooky world. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
-It was just fab. -We always like to try and invoke that. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
I think, with the last two seasons, with this one and the one before, | 0:21:02 | 0:21:05
we've really hit on a good flow, really. It just really works. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:10
It's what we do very well. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
I had a really good time doing this collection, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
the set and the venue, everything just all worked fantastically. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:19
Some seasons, it just goes like that. And this one just did. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
I think you could feel that out there. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
So, is it OK if I have a little play upstairs and a little try-on? | 0:21:25 | 0:21:29
There's only one thing, you've got to try on the Andy Pandy pyjamas. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
-OK. I love them. -Brilliant. -Perfect. -Good for you. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
OK, I'll see you later! | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
You know, I think as soon as you put on a Giles dress, | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
you instantly feel amazing. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
It's so glamorous, girly, sexy, and it feels amazing. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:57
It's been an amazing Fashion Week. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:17
We've been to three unbelievable | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
but all very, very different fashion shows. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
SIBLING, Hunter and Giles. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
I've realised high end is a term that can mean | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
loads of different things. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
From very expensive, to loads of detail, | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
intricate fabrics, luxury fabrics. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
Something created by these amazing geniuses of design. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
But, for me, it's entering in that magical world where | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
everything's way more exciting than everyday life. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
But now, for me, it's party time. So see you later! | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58 |
