Coming up, three celebs become 12 again.

0:00:020:00:04

I don't want to be on a battlefield in Scotland.

0:00:040:00:08

-His mum's cooler than him.

-Perhaps.

0:00:080:00:11

It's quite embarrassing, isn't it, really?

0:00:110:00:14

And we catch up with superstar singer, Nicole Scherzinger.

0:00:140:00:18

I was really shy and kind of awkward and lanky.

0:00:180:00:22

Want to find out more?

0:00:220:00:24

Well, have you ever wondered what it would've been like

0:00:240:00:28

to be mates with your favourite celebs when they were your age?

0:00:280:00:31

What did they get up to?

0:00:310:00:33

What were their favourite songs

0:00:330:00:35

and what TV shows did they watch?

0:00:350:00:38

Despite the glamorous lifestyles they now lead,

0:00:380:00:40

once they were a kid with their dream, just like you.

0:00:400:00:45

This show lets you look back in time with your favourite celebs

0:00:450:00:48

as they become 12 Again.

0:00:480:00:51

She's both Live and Deadly and that's just on a Saturday morning.

0:00:550:01:00

That was crazy!

0:01:000:01:02

But back in 1986, Naomi Wilkinson was a wannabe star.

0:01:020:01:07

I was noisy, quite self-confident,

0:01:070:01:10

a bit of a show-off, a bit of a chatterbox

0:01:100:01:13

and loved singing and dancing.

0:01:130:01:16

# Back when I was younger, I wanted to be everything on the planet... #

0:01:160:01:22

They may be a chart topping musical duo now,

0:01:220:01:24

but back in the noughties were Rizzle Kicks hip hop heroes?

0:01:240:01:29

When I was 12, I was a slightly confused,

0:01:290:01:32

kind of popular, athletic little boy with an Afro.

0:01:320:01:38

# Yeah, when I was a young star... #

0:01:380:01:40

I was quite immature.

0:01:420:01:46

I wasn't that cool, actually.

0:01:460:01:48

I was actually quite uncool, thinking about it.

0:01:480:01:51

She's the woman who's probably kept you awake

0:01:510:01:53

after Doctor Who on a Saturday night.

0:01:530:01:55

The Doctor must think he's winning, right until the trap closes.

0:01:550:01:59

But back in 1970, Frances Barber

0:01:590:02:01

showed no signs of this on-screen villainy.

0:02:010:02:04

At 12, I was actually a bit of a goody-goody.

0:02:040:02:07

Um, I don't quite know how or why,

0:02:070:02:11

and it all went horribly wrong shortly after that.

0:02:110:02:15

It may be super stardom today, but it wasn't always that way.

0:02:150:02:19

Let's go back and find out what they were like when they were kids.

0:02:190:02:24

I used to wear a lot of sloppy jumpers and leggings.

0:02:240:02:28

That was my usual look.

0:02:280:02:30

When I was 12, I definitely had an Afro,

0:02:300:02:33

and the older kids all thought I was cool because I had an Afro.

0:02:330:02:37

Afro got me everywhere. In fact, my nickname was minifro.

0:02:370:02:40

I always had a shaved head, completely no hair.

0:02:400:02:45

I've quite an odd-shaped head.

0:02:450:02:47

So it would've looked really weird.

0:02:470:02:50

I had these pink socks.

0:02:500:02:52

I've got older brothers,

0:02:520:02:54

so I think they were football socks or something.

0:02:540:02:56

I took to wearing those after my first year at school

0:02:560:03:00

and I was known as Frankie with the pink socks.

0:03:000:03:03

I always had them on so they must have really smelled,

0:03:030:03:06

because I don't ever remember, ever taking them off.

0:03:060:03:10

I had them on five days a week, so I must have ponged.

0:03:100:03:14

I wasn't in the cool gang, I wasn't in the complete geek gang.

0:03:140:03:18

I think I was just in the middle.

0:03:180:03:20

Maybe I was.

0:03:200:03:22

Maybe I was just quite square. Maybe more the square end.

0:03:220:03:26

So, apart from figuring out where they fitted in at school,

0:03:260:03:30

what else was life like for our celebrities?

0:03:300:03:33

I went to a school where the masters still wore their gowns,

0:03:330:03:36

like in Harry Potter. All the boys at school, they were revolting.

0:03:360:03:41

We'd rather read the Bunty,

0:03:410:03:43

go horseriding at my friend's house

0:03:430:03:46

and that was it. We thought boys were revolting, really.

0:03:460:03:50

Loads of girls in the year above told me they fancied me

0:03:500:03:53

and I didn't understand. Then I got older, a year older and I realised

0:03:530:03:58

and tried to go back to them. "No, we liked you last year."

0:03:580:04:02

-Silly Billy.

-I was silly.

0:04:020:04:04

But you know what it was? The irony is that I reckon

0:04:040:04:08

if I wasn't oblivious, I wouldn't have had so much attention.

0:04:080:04:12

I didn't have a boyfriend when I was 12,

0:04:120:04:15

but I did have a big crush on...

0:04:150:04:18

..Ralph Macchio, The Karate Kid. SHE WHISTLES

0:04:180:04:22

Oh, this is just like the picture I had in my desk. I loved him.

0:04:220:04:26

You say "Ma-CHI-o", I say "MA-chio".

0:04:260:04:29

Either way, he was the original Karate Kid,

0:04:290:04:32

before Will Smith's son Jaden took over in 2010.

0:04:320:04:37

Every single holiday we ever had was around Britain,

0:04:370:04:42

so we would have, a sort of history lesson.

0:04:420:04:46

Holidays up to Scotland

0:04:460:04:49

and we'd have history lessons about the Battle of Culloden,

0:04:490:04:54

Braveheart and William Wallace and things like that.

0:04:540:04:58

Going, "I don't want to be on a battlefield in Scotland."

0:04:580:05:03

I wanted to be on a beach in Ibiza.

0:05:030:05:06

You weren't alone. In the 1970s, Ibiza wasn't the place to be seen.

0:05:070:05:12

Everybody wanted a week's break in a British seaside holiday camp.

0:05:120:05:18

Back then, sunbathing wasn't the top priority.

0:05:180:05:21

You had your activities planned out by the smartly dressed holiday reps.

0:05:210:05:26

Wayne, Glamorous Grandmother,

0:05:260:05:28

Marion, Knobbly Knees.

0:05:280:05:30

You heard right - it was traditional for men to compete

0:05:300:05:33

to see who had the knobbliest knees, but only when they went on holiday.

0:05:330:05:38

Lisa, you'll be on Donkey Derby.

0:05:380:05:40

While the Donkey Derby was clearly more fun

0:05:400:05:42

than the Glamorous Grandmother competition, the biggest problem

0:05:420:05:47

with summer holidays in the '70s

0:05:470:05:49

was stopping your dad

0:05:490:05:51

from embarrassing the entire family! Unbelievable.

0:05:510:05:54

While Frances wanted to escape from dodgy family holidays at 12,

0:05:540:05:59

what did Naomi dream of as a kid?

0:05:590:06:01

This is a book I wrote about my ambitions.

0:06:010:06:05

It's quite embarrassing, isn't it, really!

0:06:050:06:07

"When I'm older, my ambition is to be something to do with theatre,

0:06:070:06:11

like acting, dancing, modelling or doing make-up."

0:06:110:06:14

"I would like to do this because I do dancing."

0:06:140:06:17

"I would like to appear on television and get lots of money."

0:06:170:06:21

"I would have three children, two girls and one boy."

0:06:210:06:24

"I will have one husband."

0:06:240:06:27

"My pets will be a dog, two cats and a gerbil."

0:06:270:06:29

"I would like to have my ears pierced and have lots of earrings."

0:06:290:06:33

So, those were my ambitions.

0:06:330:06:36

Naomi wasn't the only one interested in creative writing at 12.

0:06:360:06:40

I did write a song called The Simple Beat.

0:06:400:06:43

"Not too rough, not too neat, not too posh, but not too street.

0:06:430:06:47

"Not too quick but it moves the feet,

0:06:470:06:49

"It's the simple beat, the simple beat.

0:06:490:06:51

"Music makes the world go round,

0:06:510:06:52

"Not money, though I wouldn't mind a pound.

0:06:520:06:54

"Everywhere is where music can be found,

0:06:540:06:57

"whether on the street or in the underground.

0:06:570:06:59

"Music is a chemical in a compound." That's a scientific reference.

0:06:590:07:02

I was bursting with knowledge when I was younger.

0:07:020:07:05

I've got less intelligent as I've grown older.

0:07:050:07:08

So we now know what our celebs were like when they were kids.

0:07:080:07:12

But what was everyone listening to when they were 12?

0:07:120:07:16

We didn't download music, didn't have mp3 players and stuff.

0:07:160:07:19

We had - record players!

0:07:190:07:21

You had to put the record on the machine

0:07:210:07:23

and carefully lower the record needle down. I was so slow.

0:07:230:07:28

So when Naomi eventually got the music started back in 1986,

0:07:280:07:32

what was she listening to?

0:07:320:07:35

The Way You Make Me Feel, Michael Jackson,

0:07:350:07:37

Who's That Girl?, Madonna.

0:07:370:07:39

Bruce Willis, Under the Boardwalk. Shakin' St...

0:07:390:07:42

Whoa, whoa, whoa! What was that? Let's go back one.

0:07:420:07:46

Bruce Willis, Under the Boardwalk.

0:07:460:07:48

Surely that can't be Hollywood action hero Bruce Willis,

0:07:480:07:52

star of blockbuster movies like Armageddon?

0:07:520:07:54

Believe it or not, Bruce Willis,

0:07:540:07:57

that action hero we know today, had a very cheesy pop career as well.

0:07:570:08:00

# Under the boardwalk

0:08:000:08:04

# Down by the sea... #

0:08:040:08:08

Nice one, Bruce, but you should definitely stick to the acting.

0:08:080:08:12

So that was 1987, but what was Frances listening to back in 1970?

0:08:120:08:18

Having older brothers and sisters, you obviously tend to...

0:08:180:08:21

..tend to hear things they're listening to.

0:08:210:08:24

And they were all listening to Marc Bolan.

0:08:240:08:27

# Get it on, bang a gong... #

0:08:270:08:32

I remember singing that at school,

0:08:320:08:33

thinking it was just amazing because he wore make-up!

0:08:330:08:37

# Bang a gong, get it on... #

0:08:370:08:39

We'd never seen a man EVER wear make-up before!

0:08:390:08:43

So that was quite a massive thing, actually.

0:08:430:08:45

Marc Bolan was the lead singer of T-Rex,

0:08:450:08:48

one of the most popular glam rock bands of the decade.

0:08:480:08:51

But they weren't alone.

0:08:510:08:54

Glam rock was huge and exactly what you'd expect from the name,

0:08:540:08:59

rock music performed by men in glamorous outfits.

0:08:590:09:03

Some of the time!

0:09:030:09:06

The hair was big, the platforms high and the flares were pretty wide.

0:09:060:09:12

Glam rock is what 12-year-olds were listening to back then.

0:09:120:09:16

So let's bring things up to date

0:09:160:09:17

and find out what Rizzle Kicks were listening to in the noughties.

0:09:170:09:21

When I was 12, I was listening to Dizzee Rascal's first album,

0:09:210:09:26

Boy In Da Corner.

0:09:260:09:27

# Sweet like Tropicana

0:09:270:09:29

# When the hammer hits, your head splits like banana

0:09:290:09:32

# You're not ready... #

0:09:320:09:34

Dizzee Rascal was introduced to me by my mother on the way to school.

0:09:340:09:38

She was like, "Have you heard of Dizzee Rascal?"

0:09:380:09:40

I hadn't been brought up by the Queen or anything.

0:09:400:09:43

And I was like, "No, I don't know what you're talking about."

0:09:430:09:46

And she was like, "The chorus goes, 'Just a rascal, just a rascal,

0:09:460:09:50

'Just a rascal, Dizzee Rascal'."

0:09:500:09:53

# I hustle black, definitely I win

0:09:530:09:55

# So you keep taking this for a job, I'll definitely just grin

0:09:550:09:58

I went, "Cool, sounds good". Then at school, everyone was like,

0:09:580:10:02

"You heard Dizzee Rascal?"

0:10:020:10:03

I was like, "Yeah, the one that goes, 'Just a rascal..'."

0:10:030:10:06

And they were like, "Yeah", and I was like, "Sick".

0:10:060:10:08

Then I bought the album, so everyone knew...

0:10:080:10:11

-His mum was cooler than him.

-Perhaps.

0:10:110:10:13

I was listening to a lot of Nirvana at the time.

0:10:150:10:18

# I'm worse at what I do best. #

0:10:180:10:23

I thought I was being cool.

0:10:230:10:24

I was, like, "Yeah, I like a band from when I wasn't even born yet."

0:10:240:10:28

# With the lights out It's less dangerous. #

0:10:280:10:32

Nirvana went global in 1991, the year Harley was born

0:10:320:10:35

and introduced the world to grunge music.

0:10:350:10:37

It's a good job the Rizzles were listening to cool music

0:10:370:10:40

because when they were 12,

0:10:400:10:42

a song with a dodgy dance move was sweeping the nation.

0:10:420:10:45

DJ Casper.

0:10:450:10:46

This is something new, the Casper Slide, Part Two.

0:10:460:10:49

# Slide to the left Slide to the right

0:10:490:10:51

# Slide to the right

0:10:510:10:53

# Criss-cross

0:10:530:10:54

# Two hops this time, ur-ur

0:10:540:10:56

# Two hops this time Right foot, two stomps. #

0:10:560:10:59

This song was unbelievably one of the biggest singles of the year

0:10:590:11:02

but it's not the first time daft dances invaded the charts.

0:11:020:11:06

Here's some of the best and worst.

0:11:060:11:08

# Oops upside your head Say oops upside your head

0:11:080:11:12

# Say it loud. #

0:11:120:11:13

First up it's The Gap Band with their song, Oops Upside Your Head.

0:11:130:11:16

Say it loud, hey! # Say oops upside your head. #

0:11:180:11:21

Accompanied not so much by a dance,

0:11:210:11:23

just more...sitting on your bum and waving.

0:11:230:11:26

Next up it's The Tweets and The Birdie Song.

0:11:280:11:31

MUSIC: "The Birdie Song" by The Tweets

0:11:310:11:34

Is it just me, or is this absolutely terrifying?

0:11:340:11:37

-You'll know this song from parties.

-Wave your hands.

-But it's actually

0:11:400:11:43

an '80s classic by Black Lace.

0:11:430:11:45

Superman was considered pretty cool back then.

0:11:450:11:48

Look at all these fully-grown adults taking their moves very seriously.

0:11:480:11:52

Let's see you swim.

0:11:520:11:54

Superman!

0:11:560:11:57

Oh, grow up!

0:11:580:12:00

# Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena... #

0:12:000:12:02

The '90s were only a bit better for novelty songs.

0:12:020:12:05

There was the Macarena.

0:12:050:12:07

-# Hey, Macarena

-# Aaah! #

0:12:070:12:10

Then Steps came along with their version of line dancing.

0:12:100:12:15

Terrible...in a sort of good way.

0:12:150:12:17

# My rodeo Romeo A cowboy god from head to toe

0:12:170:12:20

# Wanna make you mine Better get in line

0:12:200:12:22

# Five, six, seven, eight. #

0:12:220:12:24

Still to come,

0:12:250:12:27

we catch up with international pop superstar, Nicole Scherzinger.

0:12:270:12:31

I was really shy and kind of awkward and lanky.

0:12:310:12:36

And I guess I got teased a little

0:12:360:12:38

and my nickname was Crybaby because I was very sensitive.

0:12:380:12:41

And we find out what TV gold our celebs were watching

0:12:410:12:45

when they were 12.

0:12:450:12:46

The things he did were crazy.

0:12:460:12:48

What kind of name is Biddy Baxter?

0:12:480:12:51

-Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow.

-Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow.

0:12:510:12:55

But first let's see what big moments

0:12:550:12:57

had an impact on our celebrities when they were 12.

0:12:570:13:00

When I was 12, it was Euro 2004.

0:13:000:13:03

England face Portugal, the hosts of Euro 2004 in just a few hours' time.

0:13:050:13:10

It's another crucial match.

0:13:100:13:12

-If England lose, they're out.

-Hmm, I wonder what happens here(!)

0:13:120:13:16

England went out in penalties to Portugal.

0:13:160:13:20

Hi, welcome to the programme.

0:13:200:13:22

Our top stories this afternoon:

0:13:220:13:24

Down and out in Lisbon, the England team are on their way home.

0:13:240:13:28

Today, the England players packed their bags

0:13:280:13:31

and flew out of Portugal.

0:13:310:13:32

They're all bitterly disappointed of course at missing out again

0:13:320:13:36

and all everyone here is talking about is, what on earth went wrong?

0:13:360:13:39

Euro 2004 should've been a great year for England.

0:13:390:13:42

Their star player Wayne Rooney became the youngest scorer

0:13:420:13:46

in the competition's history. Unfortunately, an injury to his foot

0:13:460:13:50

put him out of the quarter-final against Portugal

0:13:500:13:52

and the penalty shoot-out ended England's dreams.

0:13:520:13:55

I was at a friend's house watching that game with loads of people

0:13:560:14:00

and I remember just everyone just sitting there afterwards,

0:14:000:14:03

just really depressed.

0:14:030:14:06

But the good thing that happened about that game

0:14:060:14:09

is that because we were all so depressed,

0:14:090:14:12

the girl's mum then said,

0:14:120:14:15

"As you're all so upset, we can have a party here tonight."

0:14:150:14:18

-And we had a party at her house which was good.

-Awesome.

0:14:180:14:22

So let's find out what the big story was for Frances in 1971.

0:14:240:14:29

Welcome to our special programme this afternoon

0:14:290:14:31

we're calling "D-Day Minus One".

0:14:310:14:33

"D", of course, standing for decimals.

0:14:330:14:36

The thing I remember that was big news when I was 12 the most

0:14:360:14:41

was when we changed from old coinage to decimalisation.

0:14:410:14:45

Until 1971, the United Kingdom was one of the last places in the world

0:14:450:14:50

not using a modern money system.

0:14:500:14:52

Here are a threepenny bit and three old pennies.

0:14:520:14:57

If you think "threepenny bit" sounds a bit funny,

0:14:570:14:59

there was also a shilling, half a crown,

0:14:590:15:01

a sixpence and a ha'penny. Confused?

0:15:010:15:04

Basically back then, the pound had 240 old pence in it. Simple(!)

0:15:040:15:08

I couldn't work that out. I'd be going...

0:15:080:15:11

And those kind of maths lessons

0:15:110:15:13

just filled me with such misery and horror.

0:15:130:15:17

So to bring us up to date and make things a lot simpler,

0:15:170:15:20

a whole new set of coins were introduced.

0:15:200:15:22

# One pound is 100 new pennies

0:15:220:15:24

# 100 new pence to the pound. #

0:15:240:15:26

The problem was converting the price of everything from old to new money.

0:15:260:15:31

All of a sudden it was just 10 pennies in 10p.

0:15:310:15:35

It wasn't two-and-six and half a crown

0:15:350:15:37

and a sixpence and a threepenny bit

0:15:370:15:39

and whatever it was, that just made me want to cry.

0:15:390:15:42

It was just fantastic.

0:15:420:15:44

Frances may have welcomed the change, but for some people

0:15:440:15:47

it was a bit like if we changed from the pound to the euro overnight.

0:15:470:15:51

Not everyone was happy.

0:15:510:15:52

How are you getting on with the new coinage than?

0:15:520:15:55

Well, it's just terrible.

0:15:550:15:57

Are you able to do your shopping?

0:15:570:15:58

Well, you're just going to do no shopping, and that's it, finished.

0:15:580:16:02

My gran was livid!

0:16:020:16:04

While Frances's big moment at 12 was here in the UK,

0:16:060:16:09

for Naomi in 1986 a tragedy in America left a lasting impression.

0:16:090:16:14

In the worst disaster in manned spaceflight,

0:16:140:16:17

America's shuttle has exploded

0:16:170:16:19

and the seven crew are presumed dead.

0:16:190:16:21

When I was 12, one of the big stories I remember happening

0:16:210:16:25

was the spaceship Challenger exploding.

0:16:250:16:27

The space shuttle missions began in 1981 and were unique

0:16:270:16:32

because the shuttles could land back on Earth and be used again.

0:16:320:16:35

The Challenger mission was special because one of the astronauts,

0:16:350:16:39

Christa McAuliffe,

0:16:390:16:40

was the first member of the Teacher In Space Project.

0:16:400:16:44

After the disaster, no more shuttles launched for almost three years.

0:16:440:16:49

I can remember seeing that on the news quite vividly

0:16:490:16:52

and just thinking how utterly... devastating it was to watch,

0:16:520:16:57

to think that there were people on board that.

0:16:570:17:01

It was terrible.

0:17:010:17:03

But it was a personal loss that stands out

0:17:030:17:05

as Naomi's biggest moment of the year.

0:17:050:17:08

A big thing that happened in my 12th year

0:17:090:17:12

was that I lost both grandparents from my mum's side.

0:17:120:17:16

In one year it was pretty tough.

0:17:160:17:19

I was very sad to have lost my grandparents so young

0:17:190:17:23

but I have lovely memories of my grandparents

0:17:230:17:25

and they're not gone for ever, they're still with you.

0:17:250:17:29

Still to come, we ask the all-important question.

0:17:330:17:35

What would our celebs do if they were 12 again?

0:17:350:17:38

I would make myself dress differently,

0:17:380:17:41

I would tell myself what to learn and what to do,

0:17:410:17:44

who to talk to. Like, when just to shut up.

0:17:440:17:47

I'd probably say, the world is your oyster.

0:17:470:17:50

I'd do the same, if I was 12 again.

0:17:500:17:52

I am getting sad now

0:17:540:17:56

cos I think maybe 12 was the best year of my life!

0:17:560:17:59

# If you wanna have a chance... #

0:18:010:18:03

Before that we have got two minutes of Nicole Scherzinger

0:18:030:18:06

to discover what she was like when she was 12.

0:18:060:18:09

# Why's it feel like you're there

0:18:090:18:12

# When you're already gone? #

0:18:120:18:16

I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, a southern town in America.

0:18:160:18:20

Being a Hawaiian Ukrainian Filipino girl,

0:18:200:18:22

not many people looked like me.

0:18:220:18:24

I was really shy and kind of awkward and lanky

0:18:240:18:28

and I guess I got teased a little and my nickname was Crybaby

0:18:280:18:32

cos I was very sensitive.

0:18:320:18:33

A former Pussycat Doll and now a solo megastar,

0:18:330:18:37

music has always been a big part of Nicole's life.

0:18:370:18:40

My way of communicating with people was through music.

0:18:400:18:44

I wanted to be Paula Abdul.

0:18:440:18:46

# Straight up, now tell me

0:18:460:18:47

# Do you really wanna love me forever? #

0:18:470:18:50

She was so cool because growing up I didn't have a lot of people

0:18:500:18:54

where I was from who had my skin colour, who looked different

0:18:540:18:58

and was she was unique and she was beautiful

0:18:580:19:00

she was a great dancer and just had a really great spirit about her.

0:19:000:19:04

With a love of music and dance,

0:19:040:19:06

Nicole was always destined to follow in her hero's footsteps.

0:19:060:19:10

I actually went to a youth performing arts high school

0:19:100:19:12

so it was something kind of like Glee, actually.

0:19:120:19:15

Me and my friends were always singing

0:19:150:19:18

and we'd have musical theatre night.

0:19:180:19:20

It's kind of nerdy but it kept us out of trouble!

0:19:200:19:23

It was nice to be able to find a crowd

0:19:230:19:26

that shared the same likes and passions.

0:19:260:19:31

If I were 12 again and relive any moment, I was on stage.

0:19:310:19:36

I remember I was the understudy to the guy who was supposed to sing.

0:19:360:19:39

He didn't show up so they kicked me out there on stage and I sang.

0:19:390:19:44

And everybody stood up, and I couldn't believe

0:19:440:19:46

that they actually stood up and they were applauding for me

0:19:460:19:49

and I said, "wow, this is where I feel the most comfortable,

0:19:490:19:52

"is up here", and people actually liked it

0:19:520:19:55

so I would love to relive that moment again,

0:19:550:19:58

that was really special.

0:19:580:20:00

# Don't hold your breath. #

0:20:000:20:04

Let's get back to business.

0:20:070:20:08

and find out what Naomi, Frances and Rizzle Kicks were watching

0:20:080:20:11

when they were 12.

0:20:110:20:13

I definitely did watch Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow.

0:20:140:20:17

Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow.

0:20:170:20:19

# Go, go, Dick and Dom in da bungalow. #

0:20:190:20:22

Who doesn't love Dick And Dom In Da Bungalow?

0:20:220:20:25

with games like the Mucky Puddle Power Shower Game,

0:20:250:20:28

Creamy Muck Muck and Grasping Rasping Wrinklies,

0:20:280:20:31

what did The Rizzle Kicks like the best?

0:20:310:20:34

Bogies!

0:20:340:20:35

# It's the pick of the show Cos we're gonna shout, "bogies!"

0:20:350:20:38

# Till we're banned from every building in the world. #

0:20:380:20:42

Bogies!

0:20:420:20:44

They go into a public place with a bogey-ometer.

0:20:440:20:47

-Welcome to the fabulous Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

-(Bogies.)

0:20:470:20:50

And Wood starts us off with an almost inaudible bogey.

0:20:500:20:55

Bogies.

0:20:550:20:56

McCourt raising the volume 1.1.

0:20:560:20:58

And they just go, like, "bogies".

0:20:580:21:01

And everyone goes, "bogies".

0:21:010:21:03

It gets louder until they just scream, "bogies".

0:21:030:21:06

Bogies.

0:21:060:21:07

Wood straight back in with a 1.5.

0:21:070:21:10

Very, very tight at this stage of the game.

0:21:100:21:13

Small margins of increase.

0:21:130:21:16

THEY LAUGH QUIETLY

0:21:160:21:17

So 1.5 to beat for McCourt.

0:21:190:21:23

Bogies!

0:21:250:21:26

He's done it, that's a 1.8.

0:21:260:21:29

That genuinely ruined a lot of 12-year-olds' school careers!

0:21:290:21:34

Cos we spent a lot of the class just shouting "bogies"

0:21:340:21:37

and got a lot of detentions.

0:21:370:21:39

That was purely coming from Dick and Dom.

0:21:390:21:41

Now, the serious business in hand.

0:21:410:21:45

Bogies!

0:21:490:21:50

That was a brave bogey, it's a 4.2.

0:21:500:21:53

And the crowd getting to their feet,

0:21:530:21:56

delighted with the audacity of Wood's tactics there.

0:21:560:21:59

I think you've won!

0:21:590:22:00

And it seems McCourt has lost his bottle.

0:22:020:22:06

Yes, he concedes and hands the match to Wood.

0:22:060:22:09

What a marvellous victory, let's see that winning bogey one more time.

0:22:090:22:14

Bogies!

0:22:140:22:15

As well as watching shows like Da Bungalow, the Rizzles were fans

0:22:150:22:19

of the talent shows of the time like Fame Academy

0:22:190:22:22

which is like a cross between Big Brother and The X Factor.

0:22:220:22:25

Celebrity Fame Academy's one of the best things ever.

0:22:250:22:29

Always remember Ruby Wax just doing the worst rendition of a song.

0:22:310:22:35

It was just amazing.

0:22:350:22:36

Sorry about this, it is not good.

0:22:360:22:39

# I come home in the morning light

0:22:390:22:41

# My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right?"

0:22:410:22:46

# Oh, mother dear, we're not the fortunate ones

0:22:460:22:50

-# And girls just wanna have fun.

-#

0:22:500:22:53

Let's stop you right there, Ruby,

0:22:530:22:55

as we turn back time over 30 years to see what telly

0:22:550:22:59

Frances was watching in 1970.

0:22:590:23:01

The children's TV programmes I remember watching religiously

0:23:010:23:04

were Blue Peter.

0:23:040:23:05

That was the one thing, you always wanted to come to London

0:23:070:23:11

because you saw where Blue Peter was at the beginning of the show

0:23:110:23:15

and that's where the dogs were and Petra and...

0:23:150:23:19

You know, it was just thrilling to think, there they were.

0:23:190:23:23

-Hello.

-Bizarrely, the thing Frances remembers the most about the show

0:23:230:23:28

wasn't the Blue Peter pets, the DIY arts and crafts

0:23:280:23:31

or even them randomly digging holes in the ground.

0:23:310:23:34

We've been digging quite a big hole here.

0:23:340:23:37

It was actually the name in the closing credits!

0:23:370:23:39

I remember in those days saying to my mum,

0:23:390:23:42

what kind of name is Biddy Baxter?

0:23:420:23:45

It just sounded so exotic and so fantastic!

0:23:450:23:49

Biddy Baxter was in charge of Blue Peter from 1965 to 1988

0:23:490:23:54

and introduced many of the elements we still see in the show today

0:23:540:23:58

like the Blue Peter badge.

0:23:580:24:00

I wanted to be called Biddy for ages and ages!

0:24:000:24:04

Well, "Biddy Barber" does have a nice ring to it.

0:24:040:24:06

Let's move forward to 1986 and find out what Naomi was watching at 12.

0:24:090:24:14

I remember Duncan Dares very well.

0:24:140:24:16

I remember him from Blue Peter doing lots of crazy stunts.

0:24:190:24:22

Way before Helen Skelton there was Peter Duncan.

0:24:220:24:25

Geronimoooooo!

0:24:250:24:27

The action man of kids' TV in the '80s.

0:24:270:24:31

Peter joined Blue Peter in 1980

0:24:310:24:33

and quickly became the show's resident daredevil.

0:24:330:24:36

Now, just stand inside the seat there.

0:24:360:24:39

That's it. Now...

0:24:400:24:42

-You forget where you are for a minute, don't you?

-Well, don't!

0:24:430:24:46

And it just went a whole league more dramatic with Duncan Dares.

0:24:460:24:51

If it was dangerous, Mr Duncan did it.

0:24:510:24:55

Yeah, the things he did were crazy!

0:24:550:24:57

I decided my best tactic

0:24:570:24:59

was to try and trick him into losing his balance.

0:24:590:25:03

It didn't work!

0:25:030:25:05

He went fast, crashed stuff and got set on fire.

0:25:050:25:11

So please, don't try this at home!

0:25:110:25:13

So those were the TV memories of our three celebs,

0:25:170:25:20

but what do they remember most about being 12?

0:25:200:25:23

The best thing about being 12 I think is probably...

0:25:230:25:26

not being 11.

0:25:260:25:28

There are so many changes happening at that time, you are starting

0:25:280:25:32

to make decisions at school that might affect your future.

0:25:320:25:35

Your body's starting to change,

0:25:350:25:37

you're starting to get interested in boys.

0:25:370:25:40

The hardest part of your life, cos you're becoming a teenager

0:25:400:25:43

and everyone else is becoming teenagers

0:25:430:25:45

and people are becoming teenagers quicker than you.

0:25:450:25:48

-It's weird.

-It's weird, yeah. Really weird.

0:25:480:25:50

When you get into your teens, then you do start to notice boys,

0:25:500:25:56

fashion, you want to look a certain way.

0:25:560:25:59

But at 12, it isn't like that.

0:25:590:26:01

Sadly, what you want at 12 is to be 13, 14, 15, 16, 17...

0:26:010:26:06

This is what you want.

0:26:060:26:07

If only they knew, stick at 12 for a bit longer!

0:26:070:26:11

If I was 12 again what I'd do is not stop myself from playing violin

0:26:110:26:15

which would be awesome if I played now.

0:26:150:26:17

If I was 12, I wouldn't have stopped skateboarding

0:26:170:26:22

because skateboarding now, if you're good, is really cool.

0:26:220:26:25

It's always been cool.

0:26:250:26:26

I'd do the same if I was 12 again.

0:26:260:26:30

I'm getting sad now

0:26:300:26:32

cos I think maybe 12 is the best year of my life!

0:26:320:26:35

I'd tell myself what to learn, what to do, who to talk to.

0:26:370:26:42

Like, when just to shut up. What not to eat... Like, everything.

0:26:420:26:45

If I could say something to my 12-year-old self, I'd say

0:26:450:26:48

"Wash those stinking pink socks that you wore for probably a year!"

0:26:480:26:53

If I could talk to my 12-year-old self I'd probably say,

0:26:550:26:59

"The world is your oyster.

0:26:590:27:01

"Whatever you want to do, go for it, have a go.

0:27:010:27:05

"What's the worst that can happen?"

0:27:050:27:07

I think 12 is a really fantastic age to be,

0:27:070:27:10

I'd quite like to be 12 again.

0:27:100:27:12

Ah, that's nice...

0:27:140:27:15

so long as you got some new socks though, Frances, eh!

0:27:150:27:18

So what have we learned?

0:27:180:27:20

Well, if you're a Hollywood action hero,

0:27:200:27:23

leave the singing to the pop stars,

0:27:230:27:25

Oh, not dancing as well!

0:27:250:27:26

Also, beware of dads. This shameful display may be ancient,

0:27:280:27:32

but dads don't change,

0:27:320:27:33

they can embarrass you without a minute's warning.

0:27:330:27:36

And if you want to annoy everyone in a library, just do this.

0:27:360:27:39

Bogies!

0:27:390:27:40

Classic!
