0:00:550:00:59

Hi, I'm Andy. I work in the dinosaur gallery of the National Museum.

0:01:150:01:19

Hatty's working on a new display today. I can't wait to see it.

0:01:190:01:23

She's had this parcel delivered. What's inside?

0:01:230:01:26

I'm sure I'll find out.

0:01:260:01:28

Ah!

0:01:310:01:32

What a great looking display. Another brilliant job from Hatty.

0:01:360:01:42

-Are those feathers on that dinosaur?

-Yes, they are. Like this one.

0:01:420:01:47

You see, when dinosaurs died, the soft parts of them,

0:01:470:01:51

like the feathers or the skin, were usually eaten by other animals.

0:01:510:01:55

Sometimes though they weren't eaten

0:01:550:01:58

and, over millions of years, would turn into fossils.

0:01:580:02:03

-Where's my brush?

-Um...

-Oh, yes.

0:02:050:02:09

That's how we know that some dinosaurs had feathers.

0:02:100:02:14

In fact, in China there was a type of Tyrannosaurus

0:02:140:02:18

called a Yutyrannus.

0:02:180:02:19

It was as long as a bus, it had rows of very sharp teeth,

0:02:190:02:24

was an amazing hunter...

0:02:240:02:27

..but was covered in lovely, soft feathers.

0:02:290:02:35

-Like a giant, meat-eating... Cluck-cluck! ..chicken?

-Yes.

0:02:350:02:39

But we've also found fossils that show that most dinosaurs

0:02:390:02:43

were covered in scales.

0:02:430:02:45

As you'll see if you open that parcel.

0:02:450:02:47

What, there's real dinosaur skin in there?

0:02:470:02:50

-Not quite, but I do have the imprint of some dinosaur skin.

-Imprint?

0:02:500:02:57

Yes, I was fossil hunting in America when I found the fossilised skin

0:02:570:03:01

of a Tyrannosaurus rex buried in the ground.

0:03:010:03:04

So, I reached into my backpack, took out my modelling clay,

0:03:040:03:08

-pressed it into the fossilised dinosaur skin...

-It's cold!

0:03:080:03:12

..like this. And made a beautiful skin imprint.

0:03:120:03:16

Except... It is rather better with dinosaur skin than your skin.

0:03:190:03:25

Take a look.

0:03:250:03:27

Oh. Um, it's a bone.

0:03:360:03:40

Where's the imprint of the dinosaur skin?

0:03:420:03:46

What am I going to do?

0:03:460:03:47

The museum opens in a moment and I've still got lots to do.

0:03:470:03:51

I suppose I could call another museum,

0:03:510:03:54

or maybe make one myself, or... Argh!

0:03:540:03:57

Don't worry, Hatty. Leave it to me. I'll sort it out.

0:03:570:04:01

-But there's hardly any time.

-CLOCK CHIMES

0:04:010:04:04

SQUAWKING

0:04:060:04:09

-I'll make time!

-Oh, thanks, Andy. I knew I could count on you.

-Always.

0:04:110:04:18

Time to go on a dinosaur adventure!

0:04:190:04:22

Right. Waistcoat...

0:04:320:04:36

..check. Gizmo..

0:04:370:04:39

..check. Hat...

0:04:410:04:44

..check.

0:04:450:04:46

And, last but not least, Hatty's backpack.

0:04:460:04:50

To the time of Tyrannosaurus rex!

0:05:100:05:13

I've made it! I've travelled back in time 65 million years,

0:05:430:05:49

to the time of Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:05:490:05:51

What I need to do now is find a T rex

0:05:510:05:53

and get an imprint of its skin.

0:05:530:05:55

Easier said than done...

0:05:550:05:57

Well, I haven't found a T rex yet.

0:06:040:06:07

But I have found...

0:06:070:06:10

..her nest!

0:06:110:06:13

It says here that Tyrannosaurus rex

0:06:140:06:17

was too big to sit on her eggs and keep them warm, like birds.

0:06:170:06:20

So, instead, she made her nest using rotting plants.

0:06:200:06:25

I'd love to get inside and get those eggs.

0:06:250:06:28

Although I'd have to make a hole. I don't think that's a good idea.

0:06:280:06:32

-Rooaarrrhhhh!

-What was that?

0:06:320:06:34

I hope it's not the mother T rex creeping up on me.

0:06:340:06:37

I need to creep up on her.

0:06:370:06:39

GRUNTING

0:06:420:06:44

Oh.

0:06:440:06:48

It's a Didelphodon. They're not very big,

0:06:490:06:52

but it says here that they were one of the largest mammals of their time.

0:06:520:06:57

And they love nothing more than dinosaur eggs.

0:06:570:07:01

Hello, my furry, little friend. How are you?

0:07:010:07:04

Roooarrrrhh!

0:07:060:07:08

-What was that?

-Rooaarrrh!

-Maybe that's her.

0:07:080:07:11

Where's he gone?

0:07:130:07:15

He's got a broken Tyrannosaurus rex egg.

0:07:190:07:22

I wouldn't do that if I was you.

0:07:220:07:25

It looks like you might have to share it, too.

0:07:250:07:29

No, calm down. Stop it.

0:07:310:07:34

No. Come on, now. Break it up, break it up!

0:07:340:07:38

That's better. See you later.

0:07:380:07:40

-Squaaarrrk!

-What was that?

0:07:430:07:45

Ah! I've found Tyrannosaurus rex. THEY SQUEAK

0:07:510:07:55

The babies! Poor things. They must be hungry.

0:07:550:07:59

I wouldn't stray too far. I'm sure Mum will be back with some food soon.

0:08:020:08:06

What was that?

0:08:060:08:09

Probably just some Didelphodons coming back.

0:08:090:08:13

It's OK. She's just bringing them some food.

0:08:200:08:23

Which means she's probably eaten already.

0:08:230:08:26

Which also means she won't want to eat me.

0:08:260:08:29

Wow, obviously hungry.

0:08:360:08:38

Mind you, they've got a lot of growing to do.

0:08:380:08:42

It says here that the bite of a Tyrannosaurus rex

0:08:450:08:50

was three times stronger than the bite of a lion.

0:08:500:08:53

It could cut through the skin of almost any animal.

0:08:530:08:57

-Mooarrgh!

-Including this one.

0:08:570:09:00

It's an Ankylosaurus.

0:09:030:09:05

Although a plant eater, he's got such thick skin,

0:09:060:09:11

he's not afraid of anything.

0:09:110:09:12

And he's also got a huge, bony club on the end of its tail.

0:09:120:09:17

That could definitely injure a T rex.

0:09:170:09:20

Oh! Things are really hotting up here.

0:09:210:09:25

-Mooarrgggh...

-Rooarrgghh!

0:09:250:09:29

Be careful!

0:09:300:09:32

Well, that was completely unnecessary. Look at her.

0:09:340:09:40

Moooarrggghh...

0:09:400:09:42

Mooarrgghh....

0:09:420:09:45

I think she's hurt. I'm going to go after her.

0:09:470:09:51

SQUAWKING

0:09:570:09:59

Ah, she's resting! Great. Now I can get an imprint of her skin.

0:10:110:10:19

Right. Modelling clay.

0:10:220:10:24

Brilliant.

0:10:310:10:33

Yes! Look at that, it worked! OK.

0:10:360:10:41

CLOCK CHIMES The clock!

0:10:410:10:43

I've got just enough time to get back to the museum before it opens.

0:10:430:10:48

-BRANCH CRUNCHES

-Roooaaagggghh!

0:10:510:10:54

Whoa!

0:10:540:10:57

Argh!

0:10:570:11:00

Roooarrrggghh!

0:11:000:11:03

What am I going to do?

0:11:090:11:11

Hatty's backpack. It's always full of useful things.

0:11:130:11:18

A spade? How is that going to help?

0:11:180:11:21

Unless...

0:11:230:11:25

I dig a tunnel away from the nest.

0:11:250:11:28

Right...

0:11:440:11:47

Right, I should be far enough away now.

0:11:480:11:52

-Roooarrrrhhhh!

-Whoa!

0:12:020:12:05

Argh!

0:12:050:12:08

Roooarrrrhhhh!

0:12:080:12:10

Time to head back!

0:12:110:12:13

Whoa!

0:12:170:12:21

CLOCK CHIMES

0:12:210:12:23

Right, hurry along now.

0:12:530:12:56

Some dinosaurs were covered in feathers,

0:13:070:13:10

while others were covered in bumpy scales.

0:13:100:13:14

This is the imprint of the skin of a Tyrannosaurus rex,

0:13:140:13:18

one of the fiercest dinosaurs to have ever lived.

0:13:180:13:21

You can say that again.

0:13:210:13:23

Thanks, Andy. I don't know how you did it. The imprint looks great.

0:13:230:13:28

It's almost as if you'd been right next to a live Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:13:280:13:32

Ha!

0:13:320:13:35

Sh! See you next time.
