0:00:560:01:00

Hi, I work in the Dinosaur Gallery here in the National Museum.

0:01:160:01:20

I'm off to see Hatty's brand-new exhibit all about fossils.

0:01:210:01:25

-I can't wait to see it.

-GROWLING

0:01:250:01:27

And also to find out why she wanted this box.

0:01:270:01:30

There's some very strange sounds coming from it.

0:01:300:01:33

Aww, what a great painting!

0:01:330:01:35

Really nice! What's that?

0:01:360:01:39

Hatty?

0:01:410:01:43

Hello, Andy. I'm just putting the finishing touches

0:01:430:01:46

to my latest display. What do you think?

0:01:460:01:49

It's great. What's this down here, Hatty?

0:01:490:01:51

That...is a large pile...of poo.

0:01:510:01:57

Ah.

0:01:570:01:59

Or, as we fossil-hunters call it - dung.

0:01:590:02:02

-Dinosaur dung.

-Hmm.

-Well, not actual dinosaur dung,

0:02:020:02:06

it's really just something I made from mud and straw.

0:02:060:02:09

Very last thing, to make it look even more realistic... Close your eyes.

0:02:090:02:14

Prepare to be...amazed.

0:02:140:02:18

-Oh, it's a beetle.

-Not just any beetle!

0:02:210:02:25

This beetle feeds on the dung of all sorts of different animals -

0:02:250:02:29

elephants, cows, bison, which is why it's called...

0:02:290:02:34

-A dung beetle!

-Exactly.

0:02:340:02:36

Dung beetles have been around for millions of years,

0:02:360:02:41

and they even fed on the dung of our delightful diplodocus here.

0:02:410:02:48

Some beetles find the dung using their sense of smell,

0:02:480:02:55

while others hitch a ride on an animal

0:02:550:02:58

then hop off when the dinosaur does a poo.

0:02:580:03:00

But they are all...

0:03:000:03:02

BEETLE BUZZES AWAY ..excellent flyers.

0:03:020:03:05

-Oh, where's it gone?

-Oh...

0:03:050:03:08

Uhh...

0:03:110:03:13

Not here.

0:03:140:03:16

BUZZING

0:03:160:03:17

Not here.

0:03:190:03:21

BUZZING CONTINUES

0:03:210:03:22

-Here it is!

-You've found it?

0:03:220:03:25

-Oh, eh, my chicken sandwich.

-Ah.

0:03:250:03:28

-Thought I'd lost it.

-What am I going to do? The museum opens soon.

0:03:300:03:34

I suppose I could try to find a pet shop, or maybe call a zoo, or...

0:03:340:03:39

-Hatty, I'll sort it out.

-But you don't have time.

0:03:390:03:42

GRANDFATHER CLOCK TOLLS

0:03:420:03:44

SCREECHING

0:03:450:03:48

-I'll make time!

-Thanks, Andy, I knew I could count on you.

-Always.

0:03:500:03:56

Right.

0:03:560:03:58

All I need is Hatty's backpack...the bug box...and my chicken sandwich.

0:03:580:04:06

Now it's time to go on a dinosaur adventure!

0:04:060:04:09

'Waistcoat. Gizmo. Hat.'

0:04:160:04:20

To the time of diplodocus!

0:04:320:04:34

Yeah!

0:04:420:04:45

DINOSAUR SQUAWKS

0:04:570:04:59

I've made it!

0:05:060:05:08

I've travelled back in time 152 million years,

0:05:080:05:12

to the time of diplodocus.

0:05:120:05:15

All I need to do is find myself a dung beetle,

0:05:150:05:18

and the best way to do that is to find diplodocus dung.

0:05:180:05:22

Erm...

0:05:220:05:24

HE SNIFFS

0:05:250:05:27

Hmm, there's definitely an air of it over here.

0:05:270:05:31

HE CONTINUES SNIFFING

0:05:430:05:45

HE SIGHS

0:05:500:05:52

Well, I can't find any diplodocus, or any dung for that matter.

0:05:520:05:57

So strange, I thought I was on the right track.

0:05:570:06:01

-DINOSAUR SQUEAKS

-Hang on, what's going on?

0:06:030:06:06

What's happening?

0:06:090:06:10

Incredible - a whole load of baby diplodocus!

0:06:150:06:19

It says here that the adults used to lay

0:06:190:06:21

the eggs in the ground to keep them safe and warm,

0:06:210:06:24

and then when the babies hatched, they would pop out, just like this.

0:06:240:06:29

Hello.

0:06:340:06:36

Welcome to the world. I never thought I'd get to see this.

0:06:370:06:42

This is great, but I need to find a dung beetle.

0:06:430:06:47

These babies are too new, they wouldn't have had time to eat yet.

0:06:470:06:51

If they haven't eaten, they can't produce any dung.

0:06:510:06:55

But they've got to eat soon.

0:06:560:06:58

BABY DIPLODOCUS GRUNT

0:07:020:07:04

I'm following the babies to find food.

0:07:090:07:12

I'm keeping nice and low, just in case they get a bit scared.

0:07:140:07:18

It also means I've got a better chance of finding a dung beetle.

0:07:180:07:23

Diplodocus are plant eaters, although this lot are quite fussy.

0:07:230:07:27

There are some plants there. No? How about over there? No?

0:07:270:07:33

They seem to be in a bit of a hurry.

0:07:350:07:37

-HE GASPS

-And I think I know why!

0:07:400:07:42

Ornitholestes.

0:07:570:07:59

It says here that it used to be a really fast runner,

0:07:590:08:03

especially when hunting.

0:08:030:08:05

Now, luckily, I'm too big for its dinner.

0:08:070:08:10

It could easily gobble up these baby diplodocus.

0:08:100:08:14

I know!

0:08:140:08:16

Here, look.

0:08:190:08:21

Sandwich?

0:08:220:08:23

It's working! Run, diplodo... Huh?

0:08:300:08:33

Where've they gone?

0:08:340:08:36

LONG GROWL

0:08:360:08:38

Yes!

0:08:380:08:39

It's an adult diplodocus, and I THINK it's going for a poo.

0:08:570:09:03

If it is, the dung beetles should smell it,

0:09:030:09:05

and they'll be here in seconds.

0:09:050:09:08

Hang on, that's not dung, that's...

0:09:080:09:13

That's an egg!

0:09:130:09:14

Oh, I can't believe I'm seeing this!

0:09:140:09:17

Which means he is a she!

0:09:170:09:21

What she'll do now is bury the egg to keep it safe and warm,

0:09:210:09:25

and then the egg will hatch just like the others did.

0:09:250:09:28

This is great, but I still need to find some dung!

0:09:290:09:33

I think the best thing to do is to stay with her.

0:09:370:09:40

The only thing is, when she goes to join the herd,

0:09:400:09:43

it's going to be hard to keep up.

0:09:430:09:45

DIPLODOCUS ROARS

0:09:450:09:47

Unless...

0:09:470:09:48

Now this is what I call travelling in style.

0:09:500:09:54

What a view.

0:09:550:09:56

PFFRT!

0:09:560:09:59

Hang on, what's that? Is that what I think it is? Ho-ho-ho!

0:09:590:10:04

Oh...whoa, easy!

0:10:050:10:08

Dinosaur poo. Peuuww!

0:10:100:10:14

Thanks for that.

0:10:140:10:16

Oh...

0:10:170:10:19

That's incredible!

0:10:200:10:23

I knew that dung beetles had a great sense of smell, but...

0:10:230:10:26

these ones have got here before I did. Brilliant.

0:10:260:10:30

I'll just pick one up and put it in the bug box.

0:10:320:10:35

Right.

0:10:380:10:40

Which one?

0:10:400:10:41

Hoo. Ooh. Oops.

0:10:430:10:48

-Er...

-SQUELCH

0:10:480:10:49

Ooh.

0:10:490:10:52

How about this one?

0:10:520:10:54

There we are! Ha-ha!

0:11:010:11:05

Right. Hatty's going to be pleased with that.

0:11:060:11:10

GRANDFATHER CLOCK TOLLS

0:11:100:11:12

The clock... I've got no more time, I've got to get back to the museum!

0:11:140:11:19

All right.

0:11:190:11:20

SQUELCHING

0:11:200:11:21

Oh, no, I'm stuck in the dinosaur poo!

0:11:240:11:29

Aww, what am I going to do?

0:11:290:11:33

Hatty's backpack - it's always full of useful things.

0:11:330:11:37

An umbrella? What's that going to do?

0:11:410:11:43

PFFRT!

0:11:460:11:48

Whoaaaah!

0:11:480:11:49

Ho-ho, see you later, diplodocus!

0:11:500:11:54

Whoaaah!

0:11:580:12:01

Ugh! Oh...

0:12:050:12:08

Well, that wasn't the landing I was after.

0:12:090:12:13

Time to head back.

0:12:150:12:17

Ohh!

0:12:210:12:22

0:12:520:12:54

Fellow explorers, come this way.

0:13:020:13:05

That is the diplodocus, one of the longest dinosaurs that ever lived.

0:13:130:13:18

And this is some of its dung that turned to stone

0:13:190:13:23

over millions of years.

0:13:230:13:25

-Don't worry, it doesn't smell.

-(Unlike the real thing.)

0:13:250:13:29

And this is what it might have looked like all those years ago.

0:13:290:13:33

With a delightful little dung beetle on it.

0:13:340:13:38

Thanks, Andy, I don't know where you found him.

0:13:380:13:41

BUZZING

0:13:410:13:43

He seems to have found a friend.
