Hi, I'm Andy.

I work in a dinosaur gallery here in the National Museum.

I love my job. There's so many interesting things to find out.

Today, there's a brand-new exhibit all about flying dinosaurs.

I can't wait to see it.

You've got the skeleton, too. Wonderful.

Now, could you just put it down there?

What do you think of the display?

It's great. What are these things here?

These are fossils of feathers that existed millions of years ago.

I knew bone turned to stone over millions of years.

I didn't realise feathers did, too.

What bird did this come from?

-An iberomesornis.

-An iberome-who?

Iberomesornis - it was a bird

that lived in the forests of Spain 127 million years ago.

Incredible.

Oh, what have you been painting, Hatty?

This.

What bird did that belong to?

Funnily enough, a pigeon.

A pigeon? Never seen a blue pigeon before.

Which is why I had to paint it.

You painted the pigeon?

No, not the pigeon, you noodle, the feather.

I thought, as we had all these fossils of different feathers,

I'd try to show what they might have looked like

all those millions of years ago.

So, I found the father of a pigeon and painted it.

Good job.

I just need to dry it before the museum opens.

Would you mind just turning on the fan?

Great. Just make sure you don't put it onto three,

-otherwise we'll lose...

-Oh, I've got it! I've got it!

I spent ages making that and the museum opens in a moment.

to the time of Iberomesornis.

Incredible.

DINOSAURS SQUAWK AND ROAR

DINOSAUR ROARS

That sound was coming from an iguanodon.

I'm going to track them down.

There they are - iguanodon.

They're heading towards the forest.

If I follow them, they may lead me to the birds.

IGUANODON ROAR

A polacanthus!

The spikes may look scary but actually,

they're just gentle plant eaters.

Well, this is great. But I still haven't found any birds.

And I'll not be able to hear them with these noisy plant munchers!

I'm going to need to find a proper forest,

then I've got a better chance to find iberomesornis. Erm...

Excuse me.

Why walk when you can travel in style?

Now, we are heading straight for the forest and there, hopefully,

finally, we'll get to see some iberomesornis.

Come on, boy. Full steam ahead!

There are definitely more trees around here,

but the more trees there are,

the more my trusty polacanthus stops to eat them.

I mean, look, he's so excited his tail's wagging.

What is that?

Ah! For a moment, I thought it was a bird.

But it's not. It's a pterosaur.

And this one is called an ornithocheirus.

Look, he's eating his fish.

He's just gobbled it down, didn't even chew.

DINOSAUR CHIRPS

What was that?

This iguanodon is warning the other iguanodon.

No wonder!

Look - it's a hungry Utahraptor.

Looks like the iguanodons are on the menu.

Come on, run faster!

He seems to be coming this way.

Uh-oh!

Whoaaa!

That was lucky!

This is brilliant!

Not only am I getting a lift

on one of the largest flying animals that ever lived,

but we're also flying over some thick forest.

Come on, ornithocheirus, let's land.

Watch out below, here we come!

Wow, that wasn't the smooth landing I was looking for.

OK, you stay here, get yourself some water.

I'm going to go find me a feather.

I've been following the birdsong around this forest for a while now

and all of a sudden, it's just stopped.

SPLAT!

Great! What did that?

It's an iberomesornis!

And they're blue, just like Hatty thought they'd be.

OK, I think I've got an idea.

Oh, look - it's a blue feather!

This is exactly what I came here for.

Oh, better be careful not to disrupt any of these eggs over here.

Oh, look, and there's not just one,

there's lots of them.

and then get these back to the museum before it opens.

What am I going to do now?

Rope? What am I going to do with this?

Hang on, he's coming back.

And why do we have bird feathers here?

Because birds are actually a type of dinosaur.

This is my very favourite bird feather,

the further of an iberomesornis.
