Animals at Work. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Coming up, Ernie the Australian Shepherd makes his catwalk debut. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:27
A furry farmhand has his paws full with a runaway emu. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
And Heidi the sheep is the unlikely mum to a zebra daughter. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
This is my catwalk. Get out of the way. Now go, go! I'm busy. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
Do I look good in this? Don't I? Yeah. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
I'm actually not a male model, but... | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
Oh, hi there, and welcome to the show. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
I was telling my friend here | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
that he should try his hand, hoof, paw, whatever, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
he should try it at modelling because all over the world animals are strutting their stuff on catwalks. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:35
At New York's Fashion Week, we follow a four-legged model who is about to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Ah! | 0:01:35 | 0:01:41
And we're off to New York, New York. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
In stylish New York, a stunning male model and his manager strut their stuff. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
# I'm a model you know what I mean | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
# And I do my little turn on the catwalk... # | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
Meet Ernie, a four-year-old Australian shepherd, and his manager, John. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
This hot dog with the head-turning two coloured eyes has a high-end contract with a pet talent agency. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:21
They keep him in the headlines with flashy photo shoots. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
Being a model isn't all glitz and glamour. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
It takes a lot of hard work to be a picture-perfect poser. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
Stay! | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39 | |
OK. Good boy. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Good boy. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Good boy. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
That's right. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
As a professional model, Ernie needs to be in peak physical condition. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
Stay! He loves to do agility. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
He loves to do obedience. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
This healthy hottie works out with his personal trainer every day. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
Give it. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Before the attractive world of modelling beckoned, Ernie had a successful herding career. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:10
Come here. Show your ribbons. Sit. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
Good. Stay. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
These are his ribbons that he won from herding. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
# We are the champions... # | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
Good boy. Yes, you are, aren't you? | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Up, up. That's my boy. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
# And we'll keep on fighting till the end | 0:03:24 | 0:03:31
# We are the champions... # | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Ernie's favourite hobby is still herding, but there aren't any sheep in Manhattan. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
So instead, Ernie shepherds the beautiful people and puppies of New York City. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:49
Mark it up, Ernie. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Oh, good. Now we're sure not to get lost. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
What you doing? | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
Come on, Ernie. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
And he's swapped the farm for a swinging New York penthouse pad | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
accessorized with mentor and retired star poodle... | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05
..Starla. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
She teaches him the secrets of hair-grooming and fashion. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:16
To maintain his decadent downtown lifestyle, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
Ernie holds meetings every day to plan photo-shoot bookings and to advance his career. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
So, Ernie, today you have pet fashion week rehearsal. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
Pet Fashion Week is an annual event for New York's most fabulous dogs, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
featuring the hottest pet trends from all over the world. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
Ernie's first ever runway show is tomorrow. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
But the only problem is Ernie has never done catwalk. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
Today, Ernie, you know what, you have to wear this very gorgeous purple outfit. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
You're just gonna look so handsome. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
With only one day to rehearse for his first fashion show... | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
This is it. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:05
..can this photo model walk the walk or is he all talk? | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
And now to the countryside of South Carolina. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
COCK CROWS | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
Welcome to Freehaven Farm, home to a strange mix of livestock. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
FARMYARD SOUNDS | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
All managed by this furry fellow. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Canaan is a six-year-old Bouvier des Flandres. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
He is responsible for helping farm owner Caron keep things running smoothly. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
There's always something to do. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:55
He's with me, whether it's feeding, hauling water, hauling hay, there's always something to do on a farm. | 0:05:55 | 0:06:01
He's relaxed doing it and he gets excited when we chase something. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
That's when he really gets happy cos he gets to get into his element then. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
There are ten other dogs and 200 other animals on the farm, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
but Caron selected Canaan to be her number one right-hand guy. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
He's earned the position by being dominant over the other animals without being aggressive. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:26
Bouviers are gentle herding dogs who move slowly so they don't scare the animals they are working with. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
Canaan is a natural leader. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Farm Manager Canaan's duties include | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
watching for escapees while Caron cleans stalls. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:45
Rounding up the barnyard animals to be fed. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
Come on, boys. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Keeping a keen eye on the miniature horses and llamas while Caron completes a headcount. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:02
Canaan makes sure no-one is missing. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
Turkeys, pygmy goats, llamas all present and accounted for. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
Canaan also oversees security at the farm. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
He makes sure the residents are safe from wild animals. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
At night, Canaan guards the house. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
He's on the front porch. If anybody pulls up that I don't recognize, he will definitely give a warning bark. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:32
Anything that comes up whether it's animal or human, all the Bouvs are alert to that. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:39
But the most important of Canaan's jobs is herding. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
He herds birds. Well, emus actually. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
Emu-herding is a huge responsibility, as Freehaven is the largest emu farm in South Carolina. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:54
And Canaan has to take great care, because emus are complicated creatures to manage. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
Emu necks are fragile so it's important to keep them calm. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
-An out-of-control emu is clumsy and can hurt itself. -Easy. Easy. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:07
Emus have sharp toenails and can kick if cornered. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
Canaan must watch his safety and Caron's at all times. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:15
And Canaan certainly has his paw full with this wild bunch! | 0:08:15 | 0:08:20
Oh, no! Emu escape! Super Canaan to the rescue! | 0:08:22 | 0:08:28
Easy! Easy! | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Easy! | 0:08:36 | 0:08:37 | |
Today is an important day for farmhand Canaan. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
It is the end of the laying season for the emus so he must help find and collect all their eggs. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:49
Freehaven Farm is large and leafy, so it's easy to lose an emu egg around here. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:54
By working his whiffer, Canaan can cover a lot of possible egg areas very quickly. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
Good boy! Good boy! | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
Find some more. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
The eggs are safely collected and it's time for Canaan's favourite reward - a chicken egg! | 0:09:05 | 0:09:10
Good. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12 | |
Good stuff! | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
I've had this farm for 15 years. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
I've had Canaan for six. He has made my life much easier on the farm. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
He's the best buddy I could possibly get, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
and if there's such a thing with a four-legged soulmate, I've got one in him. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
Egg-cellent work today, Canaan! | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
We've been looking out for your home videos of what animals get up to on the weekend, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
and we found a boy out for a stroll with his pet... | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
skunk! | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
Meet Gizmo from Northumberland, England. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
He likes the feel of sand between his toes, all twenty of them. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
# She says, hey babe take a walk on the wild side | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
# She said, hey honey take a walk on the wild side. # | 0:09:57 | 0:10:03
Nothing says beach holiday like surf, sand and skunk. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
And we're back to New York City. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
Ernie the canine model is about to start his first contract as a catwalk model. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
He's modelled for photos before, but this is the first time he has ever walked the catwalk. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
Rehearsal for the Pet Fashion show begins in under an hour. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
Manager John is helping Ernie select a variety of accessories to showcase his natural good looks. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:42
OK, Ernie, let's go. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Ernie, let's go. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
Outside the rehearsal, New York's fashion elite assemble and run in small circles. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
OK, models, social hour is over. Time to get down to business. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
First the models meet industry experts for wardrobe fittings. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Nice! | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19 | |
And fur stylings. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
Ooh, great hair! | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
And make-up consultations. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
Pretty! | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
And what does this gorgeous guy have in common with these two-legged supermodels? | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
Good looks. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:38
Ernie has that in common with the supermodel. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
# You're beautiful | 0:11:42 | 0:11:43
# You're beautiful... # | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
Ernie's fine breeding has given him another modelling asset - his two-coloured eyes. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
The blue eye lets in more light for better night or stage vision. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
The amber eye lets in less light for better sunlight or spotlight vision. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
Ernie has the best of both visual worlds, and can work day and night herding sheep or modelling. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:06
It's time for a full doggy dress rehearsal. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
Ernie tries on a fetching black jacket with red accents. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
Let's go, Ernie. Ready to work? | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
This is it. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
POP MUSIC PLAYS | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
John and Ernie work on their walk together. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
I'm a little concerned because the models are inexperienced handling dogs, | 0:12:29 | 0:12:34
things like how to hold a smaller dog so as not to hurt them, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
to look more natural, so the dogs will be more comfortable in their arms. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:42
Bigger dogs, how to walk them toward the edge of the runway | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
rather than down the centre of the runway so the dogs do not crash into one another. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:51
Don't let her have a lot of leash, OK? | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
-Don't let her get in front of you. -OK. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
John and pet agent Nancy are teaching everyone | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
to work with a different type of heel. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
The dog should be on the outside. That'll make it a little easier. Use this to control her. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:09
It's just like that. It's just like little short... It's not a tug-of-war. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:14
It's Ernie's turn to try the walk without John. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
POP MUSIC PLAYS | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
We were a little bit concerned about Ernie in the fashion show, | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
because he is so exuberant and he thinks for himself. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
Being a herding dog he does think for himself. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
'I guess the biggest challenge for Ernie on the runway, | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
'he might be tempted to herd all the models into his side of the runway.' | 0:13:42 | 0:13:47
On the other side. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
'That's what they do. They're herding dogs and they like to get everything nice and neat in a pile.' | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
-Go. -Go! | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
We think that he'll be just fine, but we have to wait and see. | 0:13:55 | 0:14:00
Later, it's this herder's first ever live runway show. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
Will Ernie make a fabulous debut as a catwalk model, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
or should he stick to sheep-herding? | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
Mum's the word for our next animal at work, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
because she is a surrogate sheep. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
What? You think I've gone baaaarmy? | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
SHEEP: Baaaaa! | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
Well, it's true. Keep watching, because we've travelled to Africa | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
to take a look at this woolly worker. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
And now to meet an unusual family in South Africa. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
is home to some pretty wild animals. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
Rhinos, | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
elephants, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:52
zebras, | 0:14:52 | 0:14:54
warthogs, | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
and one sheep. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:57
Heidi is a young ewe. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
She's just three years old, but she is very mature for her age. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
She has to be. She's a mum to this zebra, called Zetta. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:10
Yes, that's right. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
Heidi the sheep | 0:15:14 | 0:15:15
is mother to Zetta the Zebra. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
Parenting comes naturally to sheep, and isn't new to Heidi. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
That's good news for Zetta. She has one accepting mom. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
Heidi adopted Zetta when the zebra was just three months old. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
Zetta had been abandoned by her real mum | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
and the rest of the herd at the wildlife centre. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
Zebras are sociable animals, | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
so Zetta would have struggled to survive on her own. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
Zetta needed to have company, | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
so Heidi was brought in to keep her calm. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
YAWNING | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
Heidi became Zetta's surrogate mum two years ago, | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
and the pair have been inseparable ever since. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
They play together. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
They eat together. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
And entertain visitors together. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
This odd couple are popular with the tourists, | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
and their double act is always a tour highlight. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
But today, Zetta and Heidi have to be separated. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
Heidi is being given her anti-tick medication. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
Come Zetta. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
When it's time to get Heidi on her own for her doctor's appointment, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
it takes one... | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
two... | 0:17:54 | 0:17:55
three...four... | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
..five... | 0:17:58 | 0:17:59
six... seven... | 0:17:59 | 0:18:00
eight! Whew! | 0:18:00 | 0:18:01
Eight people to break up this mother-daughter duo! | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
This doesn't hurt Heidi, | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
but she doesn't like being away from her zebra | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
any longer than necessary. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
OK, I think we're done. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
Yeah! | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26 | |
As soon as the doctor's deed is done, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Zetta races for a reunion with her sheepy-momma. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
The zebra is always protecting the sheep | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
so we had little problems keeping them separate, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
but actually we got the sheep and did our job very well. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
This mother and daughter pair can now happily go on living together | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
in perfect harmony. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:50
Oooh! Or until they make a run for it! | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
We've been looking out for your home videos | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
on what animals get up to in their spare time. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
Take this baby African elephant. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
He just can't wait to unpack his new trunk! | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
It might be time for this little elephant | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
to go back to trunk training school Ha-ha! | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
And now to meet a nurse in San Antonio, Texas. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
This is Joshua. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:53
He's a Labrador Retriever AND nurse to Corey. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
Corey has muscular dystrophy, which means his muscles are weakening... | 0:20:03 | 0:20:07
OK, are they on right? | 0:20:07 | 0:20:08
..and he finds it hard to cope with physical activity. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
Gentle giant Josh was hired two months ago to be his full-time nurse. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:16
He gets stuff for me. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
And he's always with me. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
The pair go everywhere together, and Corey is always Josh's top priority. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
To do his job properly, | 0:20:36 | 0:20:37
Joshua can't be distracted by anyone or anything else. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:42
Joshua loves people, but isn't a family pet. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
He has to bond with Corey only. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
He's sitting there and he's like, "Can you pet me? | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
"Please? Please, pet me!" He's so irresistible. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
I mean, it's hard not to. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
Today is a big test for Corey and Joshua. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
It's Halloween, so Corey's school is having a party, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
and then at night they are going trick-or-treating. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:05
Joshua must stay very focused and not get distracted. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
It will be tough work. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:15
The pair haven't spent a lot of time together in busy public places. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:19
-Tell him, so he'll do it. -Sit. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
-You've got to tell him like you mean it. -Joshua, sit! | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
Good boy! Give him some praise. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:29
Good boy. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:30
First, the Halloween party at Corey's school. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:35
Joshua stays close, to support Corey and help him balance. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
This focused friend doesn't pay attention to any other students. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:47
Up, up, up, up, up! | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
And what's the report on nurse Joshua's first assignment of the day? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
He did good. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
He did awesome. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
But the big test is how Joshua handles Halloween night. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:05
It smells nasty! | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
Will he be able to stay focused in the dark | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
with lots of strangers in costumes? | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
The biker buddies start their treat-collecting adventure. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
-Trick or treat?! -Trick or treat?! | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
Hello! Oh, my God! | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
And the dog has one too?! Oh, my! | 0:22:31 | 0:22:36
I like your outfit. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
Joshua is a giant success and he is even given some treats of his own. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:43
-Thank you. -You're welcome. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
And by the end of the night, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
they've both worked really well together. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
Having Joshua as a companion | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
has really given Corey a lot better outlook on life. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:57
He's been a lot more positive. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
We hear a lot more about, "I can do this and I can do that" | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
because he has someone there for him. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
Great work, nurse Joshua! | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
Back to the New York City catwalk. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
Ernie the Australian sheepdog is about to try his first catwalk show | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24

..until - ooh! - an uncertain strutter is hounded | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
by an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction! | 0:25:02 | 0:25:04

Will this shapely shepherd remain cool, professional, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
or be frazzled by the spotlight? | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
# I'm bringin' sexy back | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
