Hi. This is Animals At Work, bringing you...animals at work. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Around the world, there are millions of animals that have jobs. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
When we say we've got animals at work, we're not kidding! | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
This is the show that brings you the most extraordinary, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
bizarre and unusual | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
animals at work. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
Coming up: | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
We meet a pig who's becoming a porky pin-up. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
She's being a bit of a diva really, isn't she? What do you reckon? | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
We run to the hills with a drag racing dog. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
And a very hungry caterpillar with an extended family! | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
# La la la la la la... # | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
Oh, hi there. Welcome to the show. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
First animal is a piggy who hasn't gone to market. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
Rather, she's gone into marketing. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
She's trying to promote her new furry pig breed. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
To help, I'm composing a theme tune for her. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
Maybe it could be CHOP of the charts. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
Ha-ha! Anyway... Ahem! Here we go. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
# They're hairy, they're furry, they can be quite contrary | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
# Pigs in a blanket! | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
# They're pink, they don't actually stink | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
# And their fur will never shrink, they're waterproof | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
# Pigs in a blanket Pigs in a blanket | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
# Pigs in a blanket! # I thank you. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
First we're trotting round to Wiltshire in England. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Meet this two-year-old Mangalitza. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
She's a pig, with real girl power. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
This pedigree porker shares her name with pop superstar, Geri Halliwell. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:04
# I wanna really, really, really Wanna zigazig-ah... # | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
And living next door in Becking-ham palace is, of course, Posh Pig. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:12
# Out of your mind... # | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
OINNNNK! | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
Very soon, Geri's life will be spiced up | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
as this little piggy will be making a move | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
from model mum to megastar Mangalitza. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
And now, meet another rare breed. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
14-year-old owner, Maisie. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
She's pig-mad and on a mission to make these Mangalitzas famous. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
I've loved pigs since, like, the age of like two almost, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
and we've always had, like, piggy things in my bedroom, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
piggy things everywhere on my walls. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
At school everyone thinks it's really unusual and different | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
that I've got something so unique, and they're so loving as you can see. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
And they just love to be petted and they roll over for you, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
and they're just really nice to have. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
But it's this giant porker that is the centre of her spice world. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:05
Geri's two years old and she's Geri cos of her ginger hair. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:11
When she was younger she was more ginger. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
That's why she got the name Geri Halliwell, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
but as she's got older and as it's the winter, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
she's turned a bit more subtle. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
She's very protective of her piglets. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
She's almost more dominant than the boar, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
which is quite nice cos it's like girl power in a way. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Geri and the other Mangalitzas are very similar to an English breed, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
the Lincolnshire curly coat. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
A seriously bouffant breed | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
that became extinct in the UK in the 1970s. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
# Oh, Mr Hairdresser... # | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
These hairy pigs have a thick coat | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
that allows them to survive the toughest winters. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
When we first got them over in England, | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
people thought we curled their hair, which is silly, but we don't. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
It's just how they are. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00
I think it's really good that we're trying to save their breed, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
because they're a special breed. They're not like any others. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
PIG SQUEALS | 0:04:19 | 0:04:20
They're not just pigs, they're more than pigs, much more than pigs. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
They're very, very friendly. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:25
They're very human friendly. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
They have great characteristics as far as pigs are concerned. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Mothering qualities are superb | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
and nicest of all is that they're good with children. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
We keep all the rare breeds here. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
Today, sadly, Geri is one of just a few | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
woolly Mangalitzas left in the world. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
I think it's really important that people understand | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
that if she and other Mangalitzas don't carry on breeding | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
and people don't breed them, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
then they will become extinct and there'll be no more Mangalitzas left. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
That'll be a really big shame, because Mangalitzas are so special | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
and they're just so different to other pigs. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
I think it's really important that they keep going. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
She'll be hitting the phones | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
and trying to get Geri a modelling contract. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
My dream would be for Mangalitzas to not be rare any more, | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
so they're not in danger. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
I really hope Geri can pull through. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
She can pull anything off cos she's a special pig. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Today a photographer has arrived, | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
and Geri's career as the ultimate pin-up pig is about to begin. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
Fingers crossed that he's gonna take good enough pictures | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
to make Geri very famous. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:43
-Hi. -How ya doing? -I'm Maisie. -Nice to you meet you. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
I'm good. I need you to know these pictures have to be perfect. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
She needs to be glamorous, she needs to be feisty, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
she needs to be Geri Halliwell, kind of, style. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
There's a lot riding on this photoshoot. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
Geri needs to react well to the paparazzi | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
if she's going to make the Mangalitzas famous. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
-She's being a bit of a diva really, isn't she? -Geri! | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
-What do you reckon? -Yeah. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:07
Now we're checking in to the Czech Republic. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
What's this? A dog that takes their owner for a run? On a bike? | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
But wait a minute, this is actually a sport known as Bikejoring. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
Sonja and Pay live in a small ski-resort town northeast of Prague. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
When there's snow on the ground, Sonja goes skijoring. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
That's when one or two dogs pulls her on skis. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
The rest of the year she goes bikejoring with Pay. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
I just love him. I understand him. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
I'm very happy I can, you know, have him for races and for trainings. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
He's perfect dog, I think. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
It's fair to say that Pay doesn't find it a drag! | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
Although they've won many trophies, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
they compete for the pure love of the sport. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
So now they're training and training for the world championship in Spain, | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
getting ready so they might make it to the top of their game. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
We usually race fastest. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
The key to successful bikejoring is control. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
Sonja has to pedal hard to help Pay run up steep inclines. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
And then she applies the brakes, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
so they don't crash when they go downhill. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
He's a leader so he knows where to turn, where to stop, you know, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:39
how to start the race and he's very competitive. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
He likes to overtake other dogs and he always loves to be first. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:49
Pay is an excellent athlete, but he's easily spooked. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
He just made a small mistake and he turned ten metres before the tunnel, | 0:07:55 | 0:08:00
so on a small bridge. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
I didn't expect that at all, so I fell down. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
I hit my head. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
I didn't know for a while, you know, what's going on. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
When Sonja heard another racer behind her, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
she jumped back on her bike | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18
and she and Pay still managed to come in second. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
And, for that, Sonja is very grateful. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
I just love him. He's a nice dog, so beautiful. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
Last year's crash scared Sonja and Pay. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
She's hoping the memory won't hold them back. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
They are determined to practice hard for the European Championships. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:38
I didn't go on a bike for three weeks | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
and when I started again I was shaking, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
and when I went fast with the dog, I thought I can fall down. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
It took Sonja a while to overcome her fears. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
Pay is still nervous, so Sonja is working hard, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
so that he won't get spooked in the upcoming race. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
If I encourage him enough, he gets more confidence with me | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
and he's doing miracles. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
Continuing to build Pay's confidence, | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
Sonja takes him everywhere. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:11
# Just the two of us... # | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
I'm spending a lot of time with him | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
and I get to understand him more and more, | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
and he works for me very nice, you know? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
He's getting better and better. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
If Pay stays calm and runs well, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
they may get another trophy to add to their collection. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Five weeks have passed and it's race weekend for Sonja and Pay | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
at the World Bikejoring Championship. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
There are over 200 competitors from ten countries. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
Each team races the 7.6 kilometre course twice over the weekend. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:51
The lowest combined time wins. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
Yesterday was a disaster. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
Sonja's chain broke in the middle of the race. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
Even though she pushed with her leg, | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
Pay had to pull more weight than usual. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
Losing precious minutes, the pair hobbled to the finish line. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
Today is the deciding championship race. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
They're both feeling nervous after yesterday's bad luck. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
It's been raining all weekend. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
The track is muddy and slippery. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
To make matters worse, Sonja's had to borrow her boyfriend's bike. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
If I'm nervous, he's taking it from me so much, | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
so I have to think to be less nervous, | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
so maybe Pay will be less nervous as well. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
So it's all on for this race. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
If she wins she's still got a chance at taking first place, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
but it's a lot of time to make up! | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Racing through the mud is tough and soggy and filthy. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:49
Certainly no sticks in the mud, Pay and Sonja make it to the finish. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
How did they do? | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
Sadly today's good time can't make up for the lost time yesterday, | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
so there'll be no medal this weekend. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
I'm very proud of him. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
He's doing the best with me so that I'm proud most of. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
But they got over their bad crash, and they managed to finish. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
Well done, guys. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
I know when all the things go right, we could win. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
We are just a very good team. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:22
I think he loves me and I love him. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
It's a nice feeling. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:27
We've been keeping an eye on your pets | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
to see what they get up to on their days off! | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
Meet Spook the cat from London. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
Mornin'. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
He really loves to catnap! | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
Now we're trotting back over to Wiltshire in the UK. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
Earlier, we met Geri the Mangalitza. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
One of only a few in the UK, she's a rare breed porker. Maisie, her agent | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
wants to make her furry face famous and to get her a modelling contract. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
So Geri's job basically | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
is to become the face of Mangalitzas all over the country. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
Today, her snout is about to get | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
some shots for her "pork-folio" by animal photographer Nick. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
It's really important that I get these pictures absolutely perfect. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:30
But how will this feisty furry female react to the camera? | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
That's important with an animal that wants to be a star | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
because it doesn't just need to be good-looking. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
It's gotta be laid back, have a good personality. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
Yeah. That way. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
Want to try and call her back? | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
Geri! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58 | |
Oh, dear. It seems like she's going to be a bit of a prima donna. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
-She's being a bit of a diva really, isn't she? What do you reckon? -Yeah. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:10
Now she's gone now, look. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
I was just trying to get a wide-angle shot of her babies, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
but she's not very happy about that. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
You'll have to go with a bucket of food again, to try to get her round | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
cos I'm not so sure we've got those perfect pictures for you. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
-That's it, good. -Come on, Geri. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:25
Come back again. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
This is where you're gonna get your exercise now. Go, go, go, go, go! | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
Excellent. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
That's great. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:36
Her job's quite hard but she'll pull through cos she's a feisty mum. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
That's obviously dinner time, is it? | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
She's working very hard, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
and this model mum doesn't even stop for lunch! | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
Victoria Beckham's over there. She looks very jealous at the moment | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
cos Geri Halliwell's stolen the spotlight. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
Geri Halliwell, has she got an agent yet or are you gonna be her agent? | 0:13:57 | 0:14:01
-I'm her agent. -You're her agent. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
-Well, I think you're gonna have an easy job really. -Yeah. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
Her face is gonna be everywhere. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
I want it to be plastered everywhere so everybody can know about the pigs, | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
and know about Mangalitzas and really get to grips with them. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
I'm really excited to see what the photos come out like | 0:14:17 | 0:14:21
so hopefully everything's good. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
There's just time at the end of the shoot to pick out the best shot. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
You'll see what a good pig she is. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
-She looks a bit feisty there. -That what you want? OK, we can do feisty. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
-Glamour. -We can see her eye, her eye nicely on that. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
-I quite like that one. -Yep. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
I'm here today photographing. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
It could be Hello, OK magazine tomorrow. Who knows? | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
If they've got any sense they'll be after her. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
I like this one and I was hoping you could print them off for me | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
-so I can give them to other organisations. -We can do that. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
-You want it done quickly I presume? -Very quickly. -It's an urgent job. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
-I'll get that sorted out for you. -OK. Thank you very much. | 0:14:56 | 0:15:00
Thank you. I've really enjoyed that today. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
So what's next for Maisie's PR campaign? | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
I'm gonna have to give them to agents, different organisations, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
and I'm gonna have to quite push my way into that | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
and so she becomes famous and everyone knows her. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
I'm really gonna have to push that. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
She's come to be in the camera again. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
She's a pig on a mission | 0:15:20 | 0:15:21
and I think she's definitely gonna complete it. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
But the photos are just the start of Geri's career, | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
as Maisie will take them down to an animal model agency | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
to see if she can get this gorgeous hog a contract. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
But will Maisie get what she wants - what she really, really wants? | 0:15:33 | 0:15:38
Next up, worms. Hey, hey, hey, don't you go wriggling off now. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
These aren't the slimy little suckers. Oh, no. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
These worms are as silky smooth as yours truly. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
And they work to make a fabulous fabric. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:58
Don't believe me? Well, take a look at this. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
Now we're worming our way over to Nairobi, Kenya. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
Say hello to Cedric. This creeping critter | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
might not appear that important at first glance, | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
but this is Cedric, and he makes the finest fabrics known to humanity. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
Cedric is a silkworm and it's his job to create the thread | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
that makes these posh textiles. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
Cedric started life as an egg | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
that was the same size as the head of a pencil. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
When he hatched, he ate and grew, and ate and grew, | 0:16:55 | 0:16:59
until he had multiplied his own weight 10,000 times over! | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
To grow this fast, silkworms need to eat mulberry leaves every half hour | 0:17:05 | 0:17:10
for a whole month. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
One female silkworm will hatch | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
about 400 to 500 silk worm eggs | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
so Cedric will have about 400 brothers | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
along with him when he's growing up. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
Hmm, I don't know how she knows which one Cedric is! | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
-Hey. Great party! -Oh yeah. Everybody's here. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
-Oh yeah, good to see you guys. -Not only is Cedric working | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
alongside hundreds of his siblings, | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
thousands of his close and distant relatives | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
are also taking part in the silk-making process. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
# You spin me right round Baby right round... # | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
One month after hatching, Cedric is already big enough | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
and has enough energy to start spinning his cocoon. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
Cedric is very good at what he does. He was born to do it. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
He wakes up every day and he knows his job is to produce silk | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
so he will do it to the best that he can do it. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
To show that he's ready to start work, Cedric produces a green goo | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
from his stomach and then settles down to his life's work. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:18
The fluffy white cocoon that Cedric and his friends | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
are spinning around themselves is actually made of | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
one long continuous silk string. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
If you unwound it, | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
each string would be long enough to go twice around a running track. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
So it's not a surprise that every cocoon takes | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
three to four days to spin. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:43
The silk comes out of Cedric's mouth and he uses his tiny front legs | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
to place the string into position in the cocoon. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:54
Once Cedric's part in the silk-making process is complete, | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
he can retire happy in the knowledge that | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
he's left behind his silken legacy. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
After Cedric's work is done, | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
he hands the job over to the team in the factory. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
They don't just twist together some of the strings to make thread, | 0:19:16 | 0:19:21
they weave the thread into a gorgeous fabric. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:25
Next the gorgeous fabric is dyed or printed. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:30
It takes 700 cocoons to make just one silk scarf. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
This isn't just a silk scarf, | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
this is the fabric of Kings, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
brought to you by Cedric and friends. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
Meet Frank the camel, who is particular about headwear. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
Very pretty! | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
If you want to get ahead, get a hat. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
If you've got the hump, get lots and lots of hats! | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
Now we're swooping over to the US of A. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
At the Port Angeles Coastguard Base, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
everyone stands to attention for the daily raising of the flag. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
But some base personnel, like bird chaser Wiley, | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
just can't wait until the end to start work. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
And Wiley's boss is full of praise for his mutt. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
Wiley fulfills a very important role for us. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
His main goal is to basically chase birds all day. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
The air station is on Ediz Hook, a magnet for birds. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
It's a bit of land that sticks out seven kilometres into the harbour. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
It's very dangerous for birds if they get close to the helicopter. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:21
-RADIO: -Please be advised. We have a report of approximately 150 birds | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
on the end of the runway. Over. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
If there's one thing you can say about Wiley, | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
it's that he's great at scaring off birds. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
Wiley, go get them. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
WILEY BARKS | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
'Before Wiley got here, we had a real serious problem.' | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
We had anywhere from 500 - 600 birds during the nesting season | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
that would just sit on the runway. We devoted large amounts | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
of time and money into trying to solve the problem. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
Finally we found an article about a Border Collie at an airport | 0:21:59 | 0:22:04
that had been used to drive the birds away. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
We searched through Border Collie rescue | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
and we were able to find this dog and, sure enough, | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
as soon as he got out of the truck he started tearing off after the birds. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
So it was a perfect match. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
We were able to get a dog to do the job | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
and we're able to do him a service by keeping him | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
away from the pound and providing him with a very happy home. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:25
Because Wiley is so good at his job, he's got a quiet life at the base. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:34
Well... | 0:22:34 | 0:22:35
HELICOPTER WHIRRS | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39
..As quiet as an air base gets. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
In fact, top dog Wiley really does have a very easy life. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
Which gives Wiley plenty of free time to make his rounds | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
and check on how his base is running. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
Wiley roams the base checking for any cheeky birds. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
All the base personnel make sure that Wiley is looked after, | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
and he gets treats wherever he goes. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
He also makes sure everything is working correctly. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
He even has top secret clearance. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
He's allowed to go where most of the humans aren't even permitted! | 0:23:11 | 0:23:17
In fact, at times it gets pretty hard to see who's boss on this base. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:21
If Wiley had a rank, he'd definitely be the commanding officer, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
cos he has free rein to go wherever he pleases. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
Everyone pays him a fair amount of respect. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
Pretty much when he wants something, he gets it. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:42
In fact, there's only one thing this top dog isn't allowed to do, | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
and that's fly the helicopters! | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
Wiley, what are you doing in here? We're gonna go flying. Come on! | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
6580 Port Angeles. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
Be advised. Wiley is on the landing pad at this time. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
Cancel my last. Wiley is clear. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
It's the end of the day and most of the base personnel are heading home, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
but this is Wiley's home, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
and he spends his evenings keeping the night shift company. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
He definitely provides a dual mission for us. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
We got him to chase the birds. That was the reason for bringing him here, | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
but we've been very fortunate that his disposition is so friendly | 0:24:17 | 0:24:21
and he enjoys being with people so much | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
that he's really endeared himself to the entire crew. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
Wiley the bird chaser has even got his own set of wings. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
This is one top dog. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
We're trotting back to Wiltshire in England. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
Geri the Mangalitza pig is hamming it up for the cameras. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:48
14-year-old Maisie is hoping that these pictures will get | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
some much needed publicity for the rare breed of pork pedigree. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
OK, thank you very much. Bye. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00
To get some exposure, Maisie has headed down | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
to the Pig Breeders' Association, who promote rare breeds. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
If they can provide a poster for this magnificent Mangalitza | 0:25:06 | 0:25:10
then she might just get the modelling contract. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
I'm looking for lots of posters so I can put her everywhere | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
so people really can tell that it's Geri the Mangalitza. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:20
I was wondering if you could help me. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
Well, I'm sure we can. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
Result! The poster can only help Maisie get Geri the contract. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
-These are the posters that we do. -They look brilliant. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
So there's only one hurdle left. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:33
Maisie is going in for the hard sell | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
with an executive at an exclusive photographic agency. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
Welcome to Britain's Top Mangalitza Model! | 0:25:39 | 0:25:43
Executive Georgie Knight can make or break Geri's career. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:48
I'm trying to make Geri - Geri Halliwell - | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
I'm trying to make her the pin-up pig, like the ultimate worldwide | 0:25:50 | 0:25:54
superstar because I want her face to be the face of Mangalitza. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:59
OK. Have you got some pictures to show me? | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
Yeah, I've got some right here. These are some pictures | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
we took the other day with a photographer called Nick. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
-Gosh she's very hairy! -Yeah. That's one of the special things | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
about Mangalitzas - they have special curly hair and in the winter | 0:26:10 | 0:26:14
it gets a lot more woolly, almost like sheep in a way. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
So why would I want to put her on my website? | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
Well, Geri's like an amazing pig. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
She has so many qualities and we really need her | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
to get her face seen by everybody because, without her, | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
I don't think we're gonna have many Mangalitzas around for much longer. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
So it all rests on Georgie picking Geri to be on her website. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
So she is quite special then. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
She's very special to me. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
Well, we'd be happy to put her on our website for you. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
Success! | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
Coming soon to a screen near you, Geri the gorgeous Mangalitza. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:56
Now that Geri's famous it's time to sing along to her special song. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
Here goes. 'All together now.' | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
