Hey, everybody. Welcome to Animals At Work. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
This is my best friend, Jack, otherwise known as Captain Jack. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
DRAMATIC MUSIC | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
I got him from a rescue home about two years ago. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
He's been a faithful friend. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Just like our first story of this hearing dog, Sam. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
First, we're off to Nottinghamshire, in the UK. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
-Good boy, Sam! -Meet Sam and Lauren. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Together, they make up an incredible team. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
Lauren, along with 35,000 other children in Britain, is deaf... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
..and Sam is her official hearing dog. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
He acts as Lauren's ears and keeps her safe from harm... | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
-ALARM BEEPS -..where there's cause for alarm. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
Sam is a superhero. Unfortunately, he doesn't fly. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
He does something far more important. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
And it's a duty Sam's committed to 24 hours a day. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
Things were tough for Lauren before Sam worked for her. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
She's proud to have him, because before she was nervous. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
She felt very isolated from the community. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
But that was before Super Sam came on the scene! | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Good boy, Sam. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
In the six months he's been working for Lauren, things have changed. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
Sam has stopped her from being as nervous as what she was. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
He's there at the side of her. It's given her a lot of confidence. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
# Oh, you're the best friend That I ever had... # | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
Yes, Sam and Lauren are quite the team, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and now Lauren wants to prove to everyone just how amazing Sam is. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
She's signed him up for a dog agility course. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
It's the perfect chance for Sam to show just how strong their bond is. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
Sam's never let Lauren down, but the course is a notorious test | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
of a dog's physical skills. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
It features tricky obstacles, including tunnels, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
jumps, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
-the dreaded... -MAN BELLOWS: A-frame! | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
Believe me, it's no walk in the park. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
To succeed, Sam will have to listen carefully to Lauren's commands... | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Over! | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35 | |
..making it the ultimate test of their communication. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
When it comes to communication, | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Sam and the other golden Labradors have a head start. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
They're known for their intelligence and great temperament, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
making it clear why they make such great assistance dogs. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
It's a job that comes naturally to Sam, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
-especially the most important bit... -ALARM BEEPS | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
..alerting Lauren when the fire alarm sounds. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
Sam going down on all fours is his signal to Lauren | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
that it's time to leave. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
And that's not the only way Sam's helping Lauren's family. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
-He's got them to communicate better. -Prior to having Sam, | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
we had to physically go up and get Lauren or shout very loudly. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
-But not any more. -Good boy. Take it to Lauren. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
Now Sam carries notes to Lauren from her mum and dad. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
To even get to that point, Sam has undergone 18 months of training. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
Training has made him very special. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
He's only one of 12 hearing dogs paired with a child in the country, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
and he's clearly done very well. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
They've got a wonderful bond. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
It's quite obvious when you see them together. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
# You've got a friend in me... # | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
But that bond is about to be really tested amongst the obstacles. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
Sam's determined not to let Lauren down, so the pressure's on. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
Has he got what it takes? | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Later, will Sam be able to show off his skills? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
-Good boy. -Or will he let Lauren down? | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
It's not just today that animals have had jobs. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
History reveals that in the past, | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
they've had even more amazing jobs than today. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
And here are those History's Heroes! | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Hello, and welcome to History's Heroes! | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
I'm John Bumbleman... Thank you! ..world-famous historian, VIP | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
-and superstar! -HE CHUCKLES | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
-My eyes! Stop it! -CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
As I was saying, | 0:05:46 | 0:05:47
I'm quite the celebrity in the animal historian world. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
People have been gripped | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
by my amazing stories of the fantastic and the famous, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
just like these creatures. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
Our first famous working animal is Clara, an Indian rhinoceros, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
who found fame when she became one of the first living rhinos | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
to be seen in Europe. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
She arrived in Rotterdam in 1741 and was an animal instant hit. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:12
People had never seen an animal like her. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
When word of her arrival spread, everyone wanted to see Clara. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
So she set off on a tour of Europe... | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
for the next 17 years. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Yes, 17 years! | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
During her road trip, Clara visited Italy, Prague, Switzerland, Denmark, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
-Poland, Holland and the UK... -TRUMPET FANFARE | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
..meeting royals galore and posing for artists. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
She was so famous, she even had navy ships named after her. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
That is one famous rhino! | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
Our next famous hero worked way back in 1945 in Colorado, USA. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:53
At first, no-one had ever heard of a chicken called Mike, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
apart from Lloyd Olsen, the farmer who planned on eating him. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
Lloyd chopped off Mike's head, but Mike's body had other ideas. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
It simply got up and walked off! | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
Miraculously, his brainstem was left on his body, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
meaning Mike could walk around without a head. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
He survived like this for a record-breaking 18 months. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
As his fame grew, he even went on tour, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
earning up to 4,500 US dollars a month, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
making it a no-brainer for Mike to be awarded History's Hero! | 0:07:25 | 0:07:30
It may have worked for Mike, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
but for any budding celebs out there, a word of advice... | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
Try not to lose your head! Do you get it?! | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
Now, on to our final tale of animal celebrity. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:46
In 1948, in the Hong Kong docks, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
a stray cat called Simon started work on a navy boat - | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
HMS Amethyst - as the ship's cat. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
His job took him out to sea and into war. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
One day, the enemy blasted the ship, causing serious injury to Simon. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:04
Simon was rushed to the medical bay | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
where he was treated alongside the injured sailors. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
Simon survived, winning the crew's respect, and showing such heroics | 0:08:10 | 0:08:15
that the captain wrote back to London to report the cat's bravery. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Word spread, and with the help of newspaper reports, | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
Simon's story was told across the country. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
He became one of the most famous faces of the day | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
and had won his way into the hearts of the British public. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
People sent Simon letters and he received so much fan mail | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
that the captain had to appoint a press officer to deal with the post. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
-That is one famous cat! Meow! -CAT MEOWS | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
So congratulations to Simon. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
You are top of the History's Heroes Pops. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
I love a good awards ceremony - tears, laughter | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
and lots of lots of photographers! | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
I'd just like to thank you all for watching this week's | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
History's Heroes, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
in particular, you, the paparazzi. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
Tricked you! Whoo-hoo! John Bumbleman! | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
I did it! | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
And now we're off to California, in the USA. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
This is fire-safety officer Henry. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
He's a one-year-old goat in a team who prevents fires | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
by eating the vegetation, which can cause wildfires. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
It's a job he's pretty good at. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
He has a fun job. All he does is eat. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
California is so hot that plants, or brush, frequently dry up | 0:09:42 | 0:09:47
making it easy for fires to start | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
if lightening strikes or campfires get out of control. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
So, who do you call to prevent those fires? | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
-Henry! -That's right. You call Henry. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
This is Henry's family. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
They run a ranch for Henry and 350 of his fire-safety colleagues, | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
who, today, have been called out for a very important job. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:10
George has been threatened by fires in the past | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
and needs to make sure that his ranch is safe. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
It's another day in the office for Henry and the fire prevention team. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:21
But this job's different. This one comes with a big, new challenge. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:26
He's going to spend the night and stay on the site, clearing brush. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:31
This is Henry's first job spending the night away from home. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:36
That may be scary, but Henry's going to have to put any nerves aside, | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
as this is a big job. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
-Eat this. -Fortunately, Henry is a true professional. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
He can consume the equivalent of one bag of shopping every day, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
and he's only going to get hungrier. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
When Henry grows up, he'll eat ten bags of groceries. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
Although eating for a living may seem like a dream, | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
it's not without its dangers. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
And when I say dangers, I mean dangers. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
Henry works under threat of attack from predators, including coyotes, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:12
-bobcats, and mountain lions. -PREDATORS ROAR | 0:11:12 | 0:11:17
But Henry's a smart goat. He always has protection when he's on the job. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
Henry will be going to his job site with some bodyguards. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
A Great Pyrenees guards him. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
A Collie Wrangler makes sure Henry stays with the group. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
But will those guys be able to help Henry when it gets dark? | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
We'll soon find out. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
It's time to go to work. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
Yummy, yummy, everyone's hungry, which is a good start. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
There's a lot of work to be done. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
As the rest of the team goes crazy, Henry takes a more refined approach. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
He prefers a meal with a view. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:57
-Ah, Henry, you old romantic, you! -ROMANTIC MUSIC | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
It's soon time for Constantine to go home | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
and for Henry and the other goats to work without human supervision. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:11
Good luck, Henry. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
It's not long after 3am. I've never been up this late before. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
-There's been some scary noises. -BLEATING | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
What's that? Whoo! | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
Phew! It's OK. It was just Henry eating. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
Attaboy! My nerves can't take this. Let's hope Henry can hold up. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
Finally, it's dawn. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
So, was Henry able to handle his first night away from home? | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
Yes, he was! There he is, looking as professional as ever. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:48
The nightshift was no problem for this goat | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
and the whole farm has been cleared! | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
Not one bit of unwanted vegetation in sight. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
The fire risk is gone. But what does the family think? | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
How do you think Henry did? | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
-Good! -You can say that again! | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
Well done, Henry. You're one brave fire-safety goat. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
Go and get some breakfast. You must be staaaarving! | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
Hi. I'm just looking for that rapscallion | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
who's been playing all those tricks on me. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
I know who he is and what he looks like, I've just got to find him. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
We know him as the Cheeky Monkey. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
HE GIGGLES | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
I am sick of him playing pranks on me. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
I know what he looks like, where to find him, | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
I just have to find him through this bush. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
-I need something to help me do that. -# Hallelujah! # | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
Brilliant! | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
Now I'll find him! Ha! | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
Come on, Cheeky Monkey, show yourself. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
No-one plays a prank on John Barrowman | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
and gets away with it! | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
Grr! No sign of him yet. I'd better get back to set. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:05
That's all for today. Thanks for watching Animals At Work. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:09
Er, John, have you looked in the mirror recently? | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
-Why? Give me a mirror now! -DRAMATIC MUSIC | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
-HE GASPS -It's that cheeky monkey! | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
Next, it's off to Devon, in England. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
# Brass monkey | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
# That funky monkey | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
# Brass monkey, junkie That funky monkey... # | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
Tyrone is a crested black macaque with a difference. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
He's the resident food critic at his zoo. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
Yep, you heard me right! Tyrone is a food critic. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
And it's a job he's perfect for, given his picky eating habits. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:56
Tyrone can be very fussy with his food. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
If he's happy with it, everyone else will join in. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
When it comes to food, | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
all the other animals in the zoo follow Tyrone's lead. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
Everyone knows he has great taste. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
If he doesn't like something word travels fast, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
from the giraffes, to the owls, | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
to the tigers, to the zebras. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
In fact, all over the zoo. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
Tyrone's a natural food critic. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
His teeth and varied eating habits mean he'll try almost anything. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
But liking it is a different story. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
Wild macaques live in the rainforests of Indonesia | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
and eat all sorts of plants, fruit and insects. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
They even use their cheek pouches to save food until it's time to eat. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
Today, Tyrone's sampling a potential new addition to the zoo's menu. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:48
Pak choi is a delicious and nutritious Chinese cabbage | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
that's high in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
Everyone at the zoo is especially proud of the pak choi. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
It's been grown using a vertical growing system. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:05
This system involves stacking plants on vertical platforms. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
It allows a huge number and variety of plants | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
to be grown in a very small space. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
Which means lots and lots of yummy food for all the different animals. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:20
But like anything grown at the zoo, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
before the pak choi makes it anywhere near the menu, | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
it needs Tyrone's seal of approval. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
If Tyrone likes it, it gets his go-ahead | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
and can be rolled out to all the other animals. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
If not, it's "Bye-bye, pak choi," | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
which would be bad news for the keepers | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
who spent all that time growing it. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
Andrew's feeling the pressure. It's his job to feed the macaques. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
We are worried about giving Tyrone the pak choi. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
If he doesn't like it, we won't be feeding it to the rest of the zoo. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
So it's clearly a big day for the zoo. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
All right, Tyrone, get ready for your first taste of pak choi. | 0:16:55 | 0:17:00
Andrew throws the pak choi into the monkey enclosure. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:04
-Mmm. Tyrone samples a leaf. -DRAMATIC MUSIC | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
What's this? | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
Oh, he's tossed it aside and stormed indoors without properly trying it! | 0:17:13 | 0:17:18
No word either way from Tyrone. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
This is a disastrous blow to the pak choi project. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
The rain's not improving the odds of success. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
I don't think he's going for the pak choi because of the weather. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
Andrew has one last chance to get Tyrone to OK the pak choi. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:36
He puts some of the greens inside Tyrone's enclosure. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:40
This isn't how he normally feeds him but the weather leaves no choice. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
Tyrone comes over. He has a good look around. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:50
I can't look! Neither can this guy! | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
I'm going to be a monkey's uncle. Tyrone is eating the pak choi! | 0:17:52 | 0:17:57
Amazing scenes! Yummy, yummy, crunch, crunch! | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
Immediately, Tyrone's influence is on display. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
Seeing that he's approved it, the other monkeys tuck in... | 0:18:02 | 0:18:06
# Eat it, eat it... # | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
..even the little baby fella. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:10
Tyrone's endorsement means the other animals get to give it a go. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
The giraffes gobble it, | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
the baboons love it, | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
and the elephant, she can't get enough of it. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
Great work, Tyrone. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:27
So the animals have another tasty addition to their menu | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
all thanks to Tyrone, the food critic who does not monkey around. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:36
-Now, those kids who love animals, it's the... -Fanimals, yes! | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
Let's meet the Fanimals, our animal detectives... | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
Say hello to the birds with the most eggs-cellent job on the farm, | 0:18:53 | 0:18:57
it's the chickens. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
# Chicken train, running all day... # | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
A chicken's job is to lay eggs. And they're pretty good at it. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
The farmer suspects they could be better, | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
so he's drafted in the Fanimals | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
to try and help them with their egg laying. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
Each Fanimal will team up with a hen. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
Teams will try different techniques to encourage speedy egg-laying. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
The team who lay an egg the quickest wins. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
-The contenders are... -BELL DINGS | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
They're all female chickens, also known as hens. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
The average hen lays 259 eggs a year. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
But these girls are exceptionally good at their job | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
and often lay an egg a day. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
Judging the teams will be our expert, Farmer Ed. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
# We are the eggmen... # | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Down to business. The Fanimals need to select their chicken. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
Take your time. Your decision is crucial. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
The key to winning this challenge might be picking the right hen. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
Which chicken plucks your fancy? | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
-Which one do you want? -Ruth. -I've decided to go with Rachel. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
I chose Rock. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
Finally, a decision. The line-up is... | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
Team 1 - Brianna and Rachel, | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
Team 2 - Lukas and Rock, | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
and Team 3 - Sarah and Ruth. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
Next, the teams pick the strategies they'll use to help their chicken. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:30
ALL: Buh-kaw! | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
So, Fanimals, what have you got? | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
-I'm going to love my chicken. -Ahh, the romantic. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
-I'm going to help mine with science. -That would be the scientist. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:43
I'm just natural! | 0:20:43 | 0:20:45
And the good old-fashioned natural method. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
Each team has 30 minutes to try their technique. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
Whichever team lays an egg first wins. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
First up, Brianna and Rachel with the romantic approach. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
# Hello, Rachel... # | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
I love you. I can't wait to meet your egg. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:07
I'll always be here if you need to talk to me. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
Next it's Team 2, Lukas and Rock, and the scientific approach. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:18
-Feel the light. -Lukas is testing out a scientific fact | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
that the more light hens receive, the more eggs they lay. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
But will this bright idea work? | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
Last it's Team 3, Sarah and Ruth, and their natural approach. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:35
-I support you in your natural space. -# You make me feel... # | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
-I believe in you. -# Mighty real... # | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
Ruth, do what you want to. You can lay an egg or not, | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
it's up to you. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
# ..Mighty real... # | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
Our animal detectives have conducted their experiments and time is up. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:58
It's the moment of reckoning. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
Have any of the teams produced an egg? | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
First, Brianna and Rachel. Could they romance an egg? | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
DRUM ROLL | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
No. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13 | |
Unlucky, Team 1. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
Next, Lukas and Rock. Will their scientific eggs-periment work? | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
DRUM ROLL | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
No. Maybe next time, Team 2. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
It's all on Sarah and Ruth and the natural approach. Fingers crossed! | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
DRUM ROLL | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
And would you believe it? Nothing there either! | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
Sorry, guys. No eggs. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
Bad luck, Fanimals. None of your techniques worked. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
However, Lukas was on the right track. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
Scientific experiments in the past have proven the more light there is | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
the more eggs chickens lay! | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
He didn't pull it off today. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
The Fanimals proved one thing. You can't rush an egg-laying hen! | 0:22:57 | 0:23:01
Buh-kaw! | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
Finally, it's back to Nottinghamshire, in the UK. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
Sam is a hearing dog for ten-year-old Lauren, | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
who, along with 35,000 other kids in the UK, is deaf. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
Sam's job is even more special | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
as he's one of only a handful of hearing dogs working with children. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
And he's a real star. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
-He helps keep Lauren safe... -ALARM BEEPS | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
-..helps her and her family communicate... -Take it to Lauren. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
..and as a bonus, he's also become her best mate. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
But that's not enough. They want to go one step better. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
Lauren's desperate to show everyone how strong their bond is | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
and test their communication skills to the limit... | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
..by putting Sam through his paces on a dog agility course. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
Sam's never let Lauren down before, so his pride's really on the line. | 0:23:55 | 0:24:01
To complete the course, | 0:24:01 | 0:24:02
he'll have to successfully respond to all Lauren's commands | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
and avoid making any mistakes. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
There's no two ways about it, this is going to be tough. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
-COCKEREL CROWS -It's the morning of the big day. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
-Sam's eager to go. -ALARM BEEPS | 0:24:15 | 0:24:17
The whole family's come to the course to cheer on Lauren and Sam, | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
and are joined by Jan and Jenny, who are responsible for Sam's training. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
If the pressure wasn't on before, it really is now. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:34
Chris, the trainer, will put Sam through his paces. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
And when I say paces, I mean paces! | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
It features tricky obstacles, including tunnels, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
jumps, | 0:24:43 | 0:24:45
-and the dreaded... -MAN BELLOWS: A-frame! | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
First things first, that tunnel, which is trickier than it looks. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
For some dogs, it can be quite dark, smelly. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
This is Sam's chance to prove he can quickly respond to Lauren's call. | 0:24:56 | 0:25:00
Good luck, Sam! | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
-That's it. -Sam! Under! | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
-He's in the tunnel. Can he make it through? -Good boy! | 0:25:06 | 0:25:11
He's done it! Great skill, Sam! | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
No time for celebration. It's straight on to the second challenge, | 0:25:15 | 0:25:19
the jumps. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:21
Sam's got to negotiate his way over a series of hurdles. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
It should be simple enough. Here we go. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
Sam, over! | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
Oh, no, Sam! What are you doing? | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
You're meant to go over them, not around them. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
And knocking them over certainly isn't part of the plan. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
-Do you want to do it again? -Yes, let's try again. Here we go. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
That's better! One, two... | 0:25:40 | 0:25:45
-And three! Whoo, that's it! -Well done. Well done. Good. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:49
As if everyone's nerves weren't in shreds, it's the last test, | 0:25:51 | 0:25:55
the toughest of the toughest, the dreaded... | 0:25:55 | 0:25:58
MAN BELLOWS: A-frame! | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00
Sam will need all his concentration to deal with this bad boy. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:05
But no-one saw this coming. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
Sam's being distracted by a cheeky little minx called Layla. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
There's no time for romance, Sam. Let's focus, OK? | 0:26:11 | 0:26:16
Here we go. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
Lauren, do you want to bring Sam over here? | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
You can do this. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
Pass me the lead. You've got treats in your hand. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
-OK, let's go. -Yes, yes, yes! | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
-That's it! -Yes! No! | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
Disaster struck! Sam slipped off the frame. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
How embarrassing, especially in front of his fans | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
and, even worse, Layla! This won't do. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
To make amends, Sam and Lauren hatch a plan. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:48
Come on! | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
They're going to attempt the course in the shape of their own sequence. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:55
-Here goes. -Over! -It's a jump. Then the A-frame. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:59
He's made it! It's another jump. And another jump! | 0:26:59 | 0:27:04
And one final jump! That's it, he's done! | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
He's completed the agility course with flying colours! | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
A kiss for Sam and some well-deserved praise. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
Oh, it's been absolutely wonderful to watch Sam and Lauren today. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:20
-They look very happy. -Good boy. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
-Good on you, Sam. You deserve it. -# Friends forever, we'll be... # | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
Wow, Sam really is a special dog. That's it for now. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
It's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from him. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
See you next time on Animals At Work. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
Did you like that? Oh, I'm sorry to bore you! | 0:27:36 | 0:27:40
