Lindsey and Radzi's Mountain Dog Rescue Blue Peter Bite

We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.

But, today we're here to meet a very special four-legged star

and she lives right here in the Peak District.

-I can hear her barking.

-Here she comes.

-Hi!

-Hey! How are you?

-Hi!

Here she is. Hello, Dolly!

-The superstar, Dolly!

-She's off.

-She's off.

-Come on, Dolly, in you go.

-Back inside.

'Meet Dolly, the German Shepherd,

'and her owner, Ben.'

'She may look like a normal pet but,

'when she's not relaxing at home, she has a very important job to do.'

And that's because Dolly is a search-and-rescue dog.

'Only 27 dogs in the entire country do the job

'and it's really important.'

'When Dolly's working, she helps track down people

'who have got stranded and need help.'

'She's so good, she can do the same job

'as up to 20 people in a rescue.'

But it's not just Dolly who helps, because Ben's dad, Nick,

also works for Mountain Rescue.

Are you coming for a walk, Lindsey?

Yeah, go on, then.

I'm not quite sure where Radzi's gone. Hmm.

I'm sneaking out of Ben's house

because I want to find out just how good Dolly really is.

'Dolly's been a qualified rescue dog for three years,

'and she loves being outdoors.'

Do you know what? He's probably gone to get food. He is always thinking about his stomach.

-Oh, hang on.

Hello?

Hey, Linds! Did you miss me?

Always, Radzi. Where are you?

That's for Dolly to find out.

So, I'm going to hide and see if she can track me down.

Good luck - you're going to need it.

Do you know what? That sounds like a challenge to me.

'But, before the searching begins, Dolly needs to transform into...

'Super Search-And-Rescue Dog!'

'Dolly is one of nine dogs that work in the Peak District National Park,

'an area made up of 542 square miles,

'giving me plenty of places to hide.'

'And, despite the terrible weather,

'I've managed to get about a mile away from Ben and Dolly's house already.'

I'm going to go off-road now.

They're never going to find me.

'In a real situation, the Mountain Rescue team would be told roughly

'where a missing person is,

'but they rely on the dogs to help pinpoint them.'

'We know within one square mile where Radzi is,

'but it's down to Dolly to actually find him

'using her nose.'

I have just spotted the perfect hiding place.

She's never going to get me there.

How does Dolly know

what Radzi's smell is?

Why doesn't she just smell us and not run away?

She can smell us, obviously,

but she's been trained to find other people that aren't with me.

She gets me to the person, she gets a reward.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works.

I'm going to spread my scent all around us,

and see if she can still find me.

Ha-ha-ha, she's got no chance!

We'll see about that.

Let's not forget, Dolly is trained to sniff out

anyone other than her handler.

There is no way Dolly is going to find me.

Here we go.

I think that's her.

So, what's going to happen now?

I'm going to let Dolly off the lead, I'm going to give her the command to go and search,

and hopefully, Dolly will pick Radzi up really quickly on the wind.

OK, let's find Radzi.

-Come on, Dolly!

-Go for it, Dolly!

Find your toy! Where's your toy? Away, find!

Off she goes.

'Dolly will search the area

'and if she thinks she's found Radzi,

'she'll come back and let us know'

Ben, what is it like to have a super-pet? Is it super cool?

Yeah, it's absolutely amazing.

And how she's just a normal dog at home, and that's how we know her,

I honestly can't believe how she finds all these people

and saves people's lives.

I think it's amazing and I'm dead proud of her.

Oh, she's coming back. I can see Dolly. Here we go.

Good girl! Find it out! Get up!

This is so exciting, Ben.

I think that's her. Hide, hide!

'Despite my best efforts to confuse Dolly by spreading my scent,

'she's already locked on to me.

-She's found him.

-Do you think he's over there?

-She's found him.

She's straight on it. No messing about.

-Woohoo, show me.

-Yeah, she's done it, she's done it.

What Dolly is going to do now she's found Radzi,

she'll come back up to me,

she'll jump on my chest - yay, good girl! -

and she'll run back to Radzi and she'll keep doing that

until I get there.

Good girl.

How good is that?

'In a real search-and-rescue situation,

'Dolly and Nick would make sure that the person being rescued is OK

'before taking them to hospital or contacting an air ambulance for assistance.'

Imagine if that was a real-life situation. You'd feel so much safer

knowing there's a dog like Dolly out there, wouldn't you?
