In my time on Blue Peter, I've tackled some epic challenges. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
I've pushed myself to the limit physically and mentally. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
But there's always been one thing that I said I would never, ever do. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
I'm going to try and conquer my biggest fear - | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
sharks. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
I've been asked to help clean | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
the shark tanks at the Blue Planet Aquarium, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
and that's going to involve getting in the water, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
with the thing I'm most scared of. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
So, ever since I can remember, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
I have been terrified of big fish, like sharks, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
and I know for a lot of people this would be quite a fun, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
easy challenge and something they'd look forward to. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
But, for me, this is my worst nightmare. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
But to beat my fear, first I need to understand it, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
so I've come to meet fear expert, Dr Warren Mansell. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
So I understand you're coming to see me | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
-to talk about your fear of sharks? -Yes. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
My biggest fear of sharks is the idea of seeing a shark | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
coming at my face, like, swimming at me. That gives me anxiety. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:29
Would you be able to look at some pictures of sharks now? | 0:01:29 | 0:01:34
Until now, I've found it hard to even look at sharks. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
So, Warren shows me pictures of them to help me get used to it. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
-Go on, just speak your mind. -That is really scary. That's like a... | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Sea Dinosaur. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
For me, that was really hard. But the work doesn't end there. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
This challenge is only just beginning. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
It's the morning of my dive and I am so tense. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
It's time for me to meet the guys I'll be sharing a tank with. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
There's a shark looking directly at me. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
I honestly thought these sharks would just be in the distance | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
somewhere doing their thing, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
and they are right up in my face looking at me. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
I really am going to be amongst them. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Oh, my gosh, it's turning to look at me! | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
SHE LAUGHS | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
I'm not going to look at it. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
For most people, looking at a shark in a tank is a fun day out. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
But for me, it's my worst nightmare. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
Oh, no, sorry, actually my WORST nightmare would be | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
swimming with them. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
As I get ready, all my instincts are saying, "Do not do this, Lindsey!" | 0:02:42 | 0:02:47
Thankfully, Dr Warren is here to help calm my nerves. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
Looking out over the tank, what are your thoughts? | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
For me, the hardest part is going to be the moment | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
I get in that water and see a shark for the first time. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
I don't know if I can face a shark, as it were. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
-Anything else that's going to feel comforting when you're in there? -No. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
-I've just got to do it now, haven't I? -I think that's right. -Thank you. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
-I'll see you on the other side. -OK. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
The moment has arrived. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
I'm genuinely terrified. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
I'm shaking. I'm nervous. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
The real fear is a shark coming at me, head on. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
And I think that is definitely going to happen today. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
Even with Sophie and the rest of the team here to guide me, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
the last thing I want to do is get in this water. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
UNDERWATER BREATHING | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
But, I've got a job to do. Come on, Linz, you can do this! Just breathe. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:49
Sophie wants me to stay calm and I'm trying to remember the advice | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
I was given by Dr Warren. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
But all I can think about is where the sharks are, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
and it doesn't take long to find out. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
Seeing a shark up close like this is so overwhelming. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
They feel HUGE and I feel terrified. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
The sharks are drawn to us being in the tank | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
and suddenly we're surrounded. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
All along, my biggest fear has been a shark swimming directly | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
towards me and THEN this happens... | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
My heart is pounding. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
HEARTBEATS | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
My worst nightmare just swam centimetres from my face. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:57
And then it dawns on me... | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
I'm fine! This is actually quite fun. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
Oh, my goodness, oh, my goodness, oh, my goodness! | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
This challenge has been so hard for me. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
And I'm so proud I've overcome my biggest fear. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
I just hope I've inspired you guys to do the same. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
I actually can't believe I've done that, I feel quite emotional. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
Because... Erm... | 0:05:37 | 0:05:38
I was really, really scared to - I don't know why I'm crying - | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
I was really, really scared to go down and do that today. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
And actually the imagination of doing it wasn't | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
half as bad as going down and giving it a try. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
And I'd go as far as saying I actually quite enjoyed it. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
-Would you do it again, though? -No, I wouldn't do it again. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
