This week, the Blue Peter producers told me they'd booked a co-presenter

who was adventurous, brave and incredibly strong.

Of course, Radzi is still away at the Winter Olympics,

but fear not - look who's here! It's the amazing Steve Backshall!

I'm excited you're here. Can we just draw attention to this bad boy?

-The gold badge is on, people.

-My most treasured possession.

It's looking good. We've got an amazing show coming up. Before that,

though, you've got an announcement that you're desperate to make.

Yes, I have. So, just next week I'm going to be heading out

to Switzerland, I'm going to be attempting to climb

the north face of the Eiger.

OK, hang on, we need some details. What exactly is the Eiger?

The Eiger is a mountain about 4,000 metres high, in Switzerland,

-but the north face is a very special place.

-Hang on - that's large.

Yes, it is. It's huge.

It's one of the most iconic, challenging,

daunting things in all of mountaineering,

and that little dot you can see running up there, that's our route.

-We're hoping it'll take us about three days.

-Three days?!

But you just never know.

All that time you'll be sleeping on the rock face,

obviously doing everything else on the rock face.

-It's going to be full-on.

-OK, more on that later.

-Yes.

Can I just ask, why are you doing this?

Well, it's a childhood dream.

It's something I've wanted to do since I was knee high,

but also I really want to try and get everyone else out there, taking

on their own challenges, facing the things that frighten them.

OK, how do you prepare for something like this?

You're obviously a strong, fit guy,

but you gotta be amazing for this, haven't you?

It's been pretty full-on

so I'm very lucky in that my wife is a double-Olympic rowing champion,

-Helen Glover...

-We've had her on BP, she's a legend.

-So she's been training you up?

-She has, yeah.

So, cold water training, jumping into the river,

even in the middle of winter,

doing lots of stuff that's for strengthening my core

and for my hands and forearms - it's really important for climbing.

-And, yeah...

-You're a machine!

-I don't feel like it right now.

You're going to be great. How long have we got?

-You've got a while till you do it, right?

-Well, maybe not.

This time next week I could potentially be on the rock face.

But we're going to be sending updates all the time.

We're going to be posting on the CBBC website,

so that's a way for all of you to follow me

every single step of the way, hopefully all the way to the top.

There's stuff there now,

including how you're going to go to the toilet.

We're not going to say anything... Check it out. It's interesting.

It's going to be cold, but that's kind of what you want.

We need it to be cold, we need it to be furiously

cold for all of the ice and snow to be climbable.

So at least minus 20, which is kind of the inside of your freezer,

-if not quite a bit more.

-Oh.

I don't know why you're doing this but you are a hero,

you are a legend, and you're also going to love today's show,

it's as cool as ice, because you're going to see Radzi

and I quite literally take to the ice.

I get a bit of a sore bun as we try ice hockey.

into the short list for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2018.

And we want to know what they think about the three story books.

-Well, hello to you.

We begin with Wed Wabbit by Lisa Evans.

11-year-old Fidge is flung into the world of her little sister

Minnie's favourite story,

where the Wimbley Woos only speak in rhyme.

Fidge must solve puzzles to escape

and if she fails she'll be stuck in a world where Wed Wabbit rules.

There was some interesting twists in it that you didn't expect.

When Minnie was taken to the hospital,

I started to feel a bit nervous,

scared about what was going to happen next.

It has lots of interesting parts

-and funny bits.

-The characters and the story made me want to draw them.

It's so funny and it's so adventurous.

The front cover, I mean,

OK, I MAY want to read this... but once you start inside it's

just really nice, so that's why there's a saying -

never judge a book from the front cover.

Wise words. Next up, it's The Island At The End Of Everything

by Kiran Millwood Hargrave.

Ami lives happily on the island of

Culion in the Philippines with her mum.

When the horrible Mr Zamora comes to the island,

Ami is forced to leave everything she's ever known.

And though she tries to get back home, will things ever be the same?

At the beginning it looked like it was going to be butterflies,

butterflies, butterflies, like a story of butterflies,

but when you start reading it, it's like a passion of family.

It had really cool adventure and a bit of it was sad and happy

-and stuff.

-Quite dramatic, you could say, because...

-At times, when, like, something comes out of...

-Nowhere.

-Yeah.

After you get into it,

you understand why they're on an island.

I just keep on wanting to know what would happen next.

There was a few moments where I was actually quite shocked.

You couldn't stop reading cos it left you

in suspension at the end of every page.

So you couldn't put the book down.

What will these guys think of The Wizards Of Once

by Cressida Cowell?

Wish and Xar are from two different tribes,

living in magical, ancient Britain.

Wish has got her hands on a secret object she will do anything

to hide and Xar will do anything to get his hands on it.

It was a very fun book with ups and downs.

It always has a lot of description

and so you always want to reread it, even though you already finished it.

It was different from all the other pictures you would see in a book.

At the start they were enemies.

Although they're both supposed to hate each other,

when they met they suddenly liked each other.

That's a really good thing because...

And it's a bit like a moral.

There's nothing that I didn't like about the book.

Everything was perfect for me.

Wow! Rave reviews all round for the Best Story short list.

This, my friends, is a tough category.

It is indeed.

We came in super early this morning to have a bit of a chat with him.

-How are you?

It's worth saying that we've had to pre-record this for good reason,

-haven't we?

-Absolutely.

It's night-time, we're nine hours ahead here,

so we've done it before the show.

It's really cold but it's really awesome here.

Tell us what you've been up to cos it's been an amazing

Winter Olympics so far, hasn't it?

It has indeed.

Team GB have been so close to medals I can almost smell it,

but here's a BP exclusive -

gold badge holder Lizzy Yarnold, they're my top tips for you,

but I've basically been in the studio linking to all

the action all around South Korea and it has been incredible.

You've been doing such a great job, we've been watching at home.

Are you having a good time? Are you enjoying it out there?

I am having the best time ever.

However, it is really cold, it's got as low as minus 23.

So cold, in fact, my tears actually froze one of my eyelids

together because it was on my eyelash! That's cold.

That is freezing, literally. It's good to see you've got the badge on,

you've taken it all the way with you. Are you missing BP?

I'm missing BP and I'm also constantly on the website.

I bet you are, which links us nicely to this.

Three, two, one.

I'm kind of threatened by the fact you have sharp claws

and I have sharp claws.

Again, another potential character I could play.

But for now it's time for Break It With Backshall when we bust,

blow up and free stuff in the name of science.

And to make sure I can do that in relative safety,

I've got some friends here, Gus and Terence,

from the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Give them a round of applause, everyone.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

So, as I apply my safety gear, can you tell us what we're doing?

We are going to be experimenting with extreme cold today.

So, Steve, what's the coldest you've ever been?

-Top of a mountain in the Himalayas, minus 60 degrees.

-Chilly!

-Yes.

So, the stuff we're using today is about three times colder than that.

CREW: Whoa!

-I'm not going to be putting my fingers in there.

-No, please don't.

What we've got is in this flask and it is quite dangerous

but it's only dangerous because it's a liquid.

Usually it's a gas all around us, we're all breathing it right now -

it's nitrogen. Nitrogen is about 78% of the air.

Really important.

We've got it so cold that it's a liquid now, minus 196 degrees.

About ten times colder than your freezer at home.

OK, and what are we going to use this concoction for?

Let's start experimenting. So, goggles on.

And we'll take the lid off here.

-So, Steve, I got you some flowers.

-But Valentine's was yesterday!

I know. Sorry.

What you're going to do is you're going to pop those

flowers into the liquid nitrogen.

-OK.

-Now, the liquid nitrogen is really, really cold and it's going

to start freezing all of the water inside that flower,

-so turning that liquid into a solid.

-OK.

-So if you pull those flowers out now...

-And when I reveal them...

Wow, look at that, they're smoking!

-That's amazing.

-So if you just grab the flower petals with your hand,

-let's see what happens.

-Oh, wow!

That's incredible.

Listen to the sound of it, they've gone really brittle and fragile.

-I'm very glad I didn't put my fingers in there!

-Yeah!

OK, so that's what it does to liquid, what does it do to gas?

Well, let's try that with a gas.

We've got a balloon here that we prepared earlier.

-We just blew it up with our breath.

-So it's full of air.

-Which is a gas.

So if you want to hold on to the end of that

-and just put it over the top there.

-OK.

And what I have here is a camera that's going to let us

see heat, which is great.

You can't usually see heat but heat energy is in so many things

and it gives off something called infrared radiation.

Let's see it used on my crew,

so if you pan around you can see that ugly lot waving away

and the warmest parts of their body are white and yellow, and things

like the cameras, that are cool, are going to be black or dark blue.

So they're giving off infrared radiation, not harmful,

but a radiation that the camera detects and turns into colour

-so we can see it with our eyes.

-So let's see what happens

when we cool down the gas inside this balloon.

Right, so the balloon is big and full at the moment

and as the gas is applied it's starting to shrink!

It's reduced massively in size

and if I take it out...look at that.

But almost immediately it's going to start, as the air gets bigger

again inside and it expands, it's going to get large again.

-That's lovely.

-If I breathe on it...

Yeah, it's going from a nice dark blue colour and that heat from your

breathe, the heat energy's going back into the balloon,

back into the gas, and it's getting bigger and warmer.

It's all very interesting but it's not destructive enough.

What are we going to blow up?

OK, so, Steve, what do you think would happen

if we put a little bit of liquid nitrogen in the bottom of a bottle,

put the lid back on, and then heated it up really fast?

You've got a confined space and the gas is going to expand...

-I'm guessing a big bang.

-Yeah.

-So, shall we try it?

-You are talking my language.

-Perfect.

Let's head round the other side.

-OK, I guess I'm going to need these ear defenders.

-Yeah.

-Exactly.

What we're going to do, we've got a bottle here and we're going

to put the liquid nitrogen in the bottle, cap it and put it in here.

-We do have a job for you, if that's OK?

-Is it dangerous?

-A little bit.

-That's fine. Danger is my middle name.

You need to tip all those table tennis balls out of that

bucket into here, on top of the bottle.

-Perfect.

-And then retreat.

-Run away.

-OK, that I can definitely do.

-OK, perfect.

-I think we're ready. Here we go.

-OK.

-Liquid nitrogen's going in the bottle.

And a little bit more.

-OK, are you ready?

-I am ready.

-The lid is...on the bottle.

In it goes. And everyone...stand back because it is going to let rip.

There it goes!

Fantastic, well done.

Ping pong balls bouncing about all over the studio.

I am very glad I am not going to be clearing that up.

This is exactly the kind of appliance of science

we love to see and the kind of thing that gets kids inspired,

which I'm guessing is exactly what the

-Edinburgh International Science Festival is all about.

-Absolutely.

The festival this year starts on the 31st of March. It runs for two weeks

-and it's full of loads of science fun for all the family.

-Great stuff.

Come along, you're going to be able to pull apart a lamb's heart,

learn how to code a Lego robot,

or find out what happens inside engines. Loads of really cool stuff.

-You had me at pulling apart a heart.

-Good stuff.

-Great.

Keeping with the frozen theme and also because the Winter Olympics are

on right now, Lindsey and Radzi are going to go head-to-head on the ice.

Ice hockey.

It's one of the most action-packed, fastest sports on the planet.

It requires loads of power, accuracy, skill and balance.

Yeah, I'm not sure we have any of those skills.

-Can you actually ice skate?

-Yeah, I'm well good.

What could possibly go wrong?

We've been set an ice hockey challenge but in true Blue Peter

fashion, we have no idea what it is.

And stop!

So with the help of some professionals,

we tried to get to grips with the basics.

Passing's fun.

But I want to learn how to dribble.

Nice.

While Radzi tries dribbling and shooting,

I fancy a go in goal.

Oh, no!

Radz!

Hey, am I the most graceful goalkeeper in the world?

-Absolutely...not.

-But at least I saved a couple.

It's time to find out what our challenge is.

And to do that we're off to Nottingham

to meet two GB superstars.

Guys, it's an absolute pleasure to meet you.

-and we thought it'd be good if you stuck around and enjoyed the game.

-We thought you were here cos you were going to set us an impossible challenge.

We think it'll be a good idea for you guys to

go in goal for a penalty shoot-out.

In front of the crowd?

We're going to be taking part in a goalkeeping penalty challenge,

facing four penalties each. Whoever saves the most, wins.

And it's all going to be happening in front of 5,000 people

waiting to see Great Britain in action.

Have we ever been more out of our depth?

Thankfully, once we're suited up,

GB's goalkeeping coach Nathan is here to help.

Just make sure you're holding your stick at the paddle there. OK.

And then you want to make yourself as big as you can, take

away as much net as possible.

Nathan is going very easy on us.

When we face a real penalty, good players can do all sorts of tricks.

I mean, just look at that!

-How do you think we did?

-I think you did a great job. I think, Linds,

just make sure your glove's always square to the shooter every time,

and then, Radz, just make sure that

when the player's coming back with you, you just slowly come back

and you're kind of not stuck out of position to make that save.

-So that's it.

-We're up against top youth team the Solway Sharks.

This could get embarrassing.

Here we go, we're about to make our GB ice hockey debut.

I'm so scared!

I'm up first.

The crowd is loud and the moment the penalty taker sets off,

I realise I'm in trouble.

The puck's in the net before I even know what's happened.

So no save for me.

Not the best of starts.

-Good effort. It's my turn now.

I think I just saved that one!

It wasn't pretty, it wasn't textbook,

but I did manage to get my stick in front of that one.

Right, come on, Linds, anything he can do...

Yes! Moved my stick at the last minute.

Right, it's time to up my game. The crowd are behind me.

OK, focus.

No! That's not how you do it, Radzi!

He was just too quick across the ice.

Still, 1-1.

Oh, my goodness, that's fast.

These guys are getting quicker. Like Radzi, I'm nowhere near that.

This is a lot of fun!

It is but I kind of want to win.

And to do that I need to do something different.

That's not how you do it. OK, he's down.

Radzi fell forward and tripped over one of the people trying to score.

Radz!

OK, no-one's hurt. Just my pride.

But I did manage to save it. 2-1.

Come on, Lindsey, eye on the puck. Eye on the puck.

He goes wide.

And misses!

I'd like to think I made myself big there and put him off.

But that would be totally not true.

So this is it. 2-2 with one penalty left. If I save it, I win.

Do you know what? I'm going to go for it. I'm off the line...

Oh, no! Oh, dear!

Oh, that's embarrassing.

A draw's a fair result, I reckon.

And as the Sharks take a lap of honour,

we're left admiring just how skilful these guys are,

and how skilful we are not.

-It was two apiece.

-It's a draw.

-Radz!

-There's only one winner and that's ice hockey.

-For sure.

-What a sport!
