On today's show, we've got wind, rain and a giant cloud in the studio, | 7:00:35 | 7:00:38
so, you know what? I'm not taking my chances. | 7:00:38 | 7:00:41
Linds, we don't need to be quite that prepared. | 7:00:41 | 7:00:43
Oh, really? | 7:00:43 | 7:00:44
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING RUMBLES | 7:00:44 | 7:00:46
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 7:01:04 | 7:01:06
Hello, and welcome to live Blue Peter! | 7:01:06 | 7:01:08
Coming up on today's show, I'll be showing you how to make | 7:01:08 | 7:01:11
your very own Blue Peter Christmas card 2015. | 7:01:11 | 7:01:14
It is a cracker! | 7:01:14 | 7:01:16
POPPING | 7:01:16 | 7:01:17
Literally. SHE LAUGHS | 7:01:17 | 7:01:19
This hero of a scientist, Greg Foot, | 7:01:19 | 7:01:21
is back in the house with a belter of a weather experiment. | 7:01:21 | 7:01:24
What can we expect, my friend? | 7:01:24 | 7:01:25
Oh, I'm only going to fill the whole studio with a cloud. | 7:01:25 | 7:01:28
I cannot wait for that. And that's not all. | 7:01:28 | 7:01:30
Check this out. | 7:01:30 | 7:01:32
Woohoo! | 7:01:32 | 7:01:34
Oh, yeah! | 7:01:34 | 7:01:35
'I get put through my paces in the air and in the water, | 7:01:35 | 7:01:38
'all as a part of my wind turbine adventure.' | 7:01:38 | 7:01:41
That looks so cool. | 7:01:41 | 7:01:42
And, because we're talking about extreme weather today, | 7:01:42 | 7:01:45
we want to hear from you, it's a live show, isn't it? | 7:01:45 | 7:01:47
So get in touch with us and tell us if anything | 7:01:47 | 7:01:49
could pour out of the sky today for you, what would it be? | 7:01:49 | 7:01:52
-BOTH: -And why? | 7:01:52 | 7:01:53
Head to the website. | 7:01:53 | 7:01:55
We will read your comments at the end of the show. | 7:01:57 | 7:01:59
Now, you can probably tell the man, the myth, | 7:01:59 | 7:02:01
Barney Harwood is not here. He is on holiday. | 7:02:01 | 7:02:03
However, before he left, he did a spot of gardening, | 7:02:03 | 7:02:06
extreme gardening, at extreme heights. Check this out. | 7:02:06 | 7:02:09
JUNGLE SOUNDS | 7:02:11 | 7:02:12
MONKEYS SHRIEK | 7:02:12 | 7:02:13
I think I'm lost. | 7:02:15 | 7:02:16
I'm never going to see Radzi again. | 7:02:18 | 7:02:20
You know you can use the paths, Barney? | 7:02:20 | 7:02:22
Yeah, I'll just use that. Ooh! | 7:02:22 | 7:02:25
'OK, so I'm not actually lost in the jungle. | 7:02:25 | 7:02:27
'I'm in the world's largest indoor rainforest at the Eden Project | 7:02:27 | 7:02:31
'in Cornwall, home to over two million plants.' | 7:02:31 | 7:02:34
'Some of the tropical plants in these giant domes, known as biomes, | 7:02:37 | 7:02:40
'can grow to be seriously tall. | 7:02:40 | 7:02:42
'And I've heard they need my help to trim them. | 7:02:42 | 7:02:45
'Let's get some gardening gear on.' | 7:02:45 | 7:02:47
Well, I wasn't expecting this. | 7:02:48 | 7:02:50
But I am kitted out to do some extreme gardening. | 7:02:50 | 7:02:52
And the girl to show me the ropes is Hetty. | 7:02:52 | 7:02:55
Now, she says she hangs around here, but, erm... | 7:02:55 | 7:02:57
I haven't seen her. Have you seen her anywhere? | 7:02:57 | 7:02:59
Hey, Barney? You ready? | 7:02:59 | 7:03:01
'Ah! There she is. | 7:03:01 | 7:03:02
'Hetty is one of the horticulturalists here, | 7:03:02 | 7:03:04
'who looks after all the plants, and she's taking me right up | 7:03:04 | 7:03:07
'into the tree canopy to start pruning.' | 7:03:07 | 7:03:09
'I'm using a technique called jugging, | 7:03:11 | 7:03:13
'where I make myself go higher by pulling on my rope. | 7:03:13 | 7:03:16
'It sounds really hard, but it's actually surprisingly easy. | 7:03:16 | 7:03:19
'And before no time, I'm up in the trees.' | 7:03:19 | 7:03:21
Why do you have to prune these? | 7:03:22 | 7:03:24
Tropical trees grow really, really fast. | 7:03:24 | 7:03:26
And they get so big that they start to grow into the side | 7:03:26 | 7:03:30
of the biome structure. | 7:03:30 | 7:03:32
How do you maintain the conditions of a real rainforest? | 7:03:32 | 7:03:34
-So we've got this fantastic structure above us. -Yeah. | 7:03:34 | 7:03:37
Which is really efficient. | 7:03:37 | 7:03:39
As soon as that sun comes out, it captures all the heat | 7:03:39 | 7:03:41
and helps to keep it really nice and warm. | 7:03:41 | 7:03:44
It can get up to about 43 degrees in here. | 7:03:44 | 7:03:46
Maybe higher, right at the top. | 7:03:46 | 7:03:48
That's hotter than going to Spain on holiday | 7:03:48 | 7:03:50
-at the height of summer, isn't it? That's... -Yeah. -That's real heat. | 7:03:50 | 7:03:53
-So if I trim this one. -Yes, please. -Just about there? | 7:03:53 | 7:03:56
-Yeah, that'll do nicely. -Nice clean cut. | 7:03:56 | 7:03:59
Big branch falling. | 7:03:59 | 7:04:00
Coming down. | 7:04:01 | 7:04:03
'And, while we're up here, Hetty wants to show me some of the sights. | 7:04:04 | 7:04:08
We're about eight metres up today, | 7:04:08 | 7:04:09
which is quite a little climb for us. | 7:04:09 | 7:04:12
-That big tree you can see over there, our kapok. -Yeah. | 7:04:12 | 7:04:14
-That's 30 metres high now. -Wow. | 7:04:14 | 7:04:16
And from the top of that platform down to the ground is 50 metres. | 7:04:16 | 7:04:19
-That's insanely high, isn't it? -It is. | 7:04:19 | 7:04:21
-Shall we go down? -Yes. | 7:04:21 | 7:04:23
'So there you have it. | 7:04:23 | 7:04:24
'Pruning a rainforest, tick. | 7:04:24 | 7:04:26
'But it's not just tropical trees growing here. | 7:04:26 | 7:04:29
'There are all kinds of plants from around the world, | 7:04:29 | 7:04:31
'including South American cocoa beans.' | 7:04:31 | 7:04:34
Wait, did I just say cocoa? | 7:04:34 | 7:04:36
-HE GASPS -I did! | 7:04:36 | 7:04:37
Well, you know what that means. | 7:04:37 | 7:04:39
That means we're surrounded by chocolate. | 7:04:39 | 7:04:41
Everyone stop filming, we're having lunch. | 7:04:41 | 7:04:44
Come on, Barney! We've got work to do. | 7:04:44 | 7:04:46
'What? More work? Oh, OK. | 7:04:46 | 7:04:49
'Next on the list is picking papayas.' | 7:04:49 | 7:04:51
-I'm going to cut and you're going to catch. -Ah, this is cool. | 7:04:51 | 7:04:54
So first one. | 7:04:54 | 7:04:56
-Got it, got it, got it! -Whoa! | 7:04:56 | 7:04:57
Yes! First one in and then it's just splattered everywhere. | 7:04:57 | 7:05:01
-Whoa! -Yes! -Whoa! | 7:05:01 | 7:05:02
Yeah, look at that! | 7:05:02 | 7:05:03
Got it, got it, got it! | 7:05:05 | 7:05:06
Yes, we're in! Beautiful. | 7:05:06 | 7:05:08
I think I broke the camera. | 7:05:08 | 7:05:10
'After the fruit is picked, it goes on display, | 7:05:10 | 7:05:12
'so that visitors can learn about the different types of food | 7:05:12 | 7:05:15
'grown around the world.' | 7:05:15 | 7:05:17
OK, Hetty, so far we've climbed to the top of some trees, | 7:05:17 | 7:05:20
done a bit of pruning. | 7:05:20 | 7:05:21
We've picked some fruit, that was cool. | 7:05:21 | 7:05:23
You've told me that we can't have any chocolate. What's next? | 7:05:23 | 7:05:26
So the final job today involves chillies. | 7:05:26 | 7:05:28
-VOICE ECHOES: -Chillies. -DRAMATIC MUSIC | 7:05:28 | 7:05:30
'Not chillies!' | 7:05:30 | 7:05:32
MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding | 7:05:33 | 7:05:34
'I still have nightmares about that live chilli-eating challenge.' | 7:05:34 | 7:05:38
# And we gonna let it burn. # | 7:05:38 | 7:05:40
LAUGHTER Barney's gone. | 7:05:40 | 7:05:41
-ECHOING: Barney's gone. -Barney? Barney? | 7:05:41 | 7:05:43
-Barney? -Yeah? | 7:05:43 | 7:05:44
Hi, Hetty. Chillies. | 7:05:44 | 7:05:46
Erm...love chillies. | 7:05:46 | 7:05:48
Wh...what, er, what does it involve? | 7:05:48 | 7:05:49
We're going to harvest some chillies. | 7:05:49 | 7:05:51
-We're going to harvest them? -Yeah. -We're going to pick them? | 7:05:51 | 7:05:54
-That's all we're doing? -That's all we're doing. | 7:05:54 | 7:05:56
I love picking chillies! Show me where they are! | 7:05:56 | 7:05:58
FLAMENCO MUSIC | 7:05:58 | 7:05:59
-IN SPANISH ACCENT: -'Say hello to the habanero chilli. | 7:05:59 | 7:06:01
'These little fellas are hot. In fact, they are so hot, | 7:06:01 | 7:06:04
'we have to wear gloves before we can start picking them.' | 7:06:04 | 7:06:07
Why do think it's important to grow lots of different things? | 7:06:07 | 7:06:10
And why here at the Eden Project? | 7:06:10 | 7:06:11
Well, we want to show people how dependent they are upon plants. | 7:06:11 | 7:06:15
Without plants, we wouldn't be eating, we wouldn't have shelter. | 7:06:15 | 7:06:20
A lot of the clothes that we are wearing are made from plants, | 7:06:20 | 7:06:23
so we are here to reconnect people. | 7:06:23 | 7:06:25
Well, I happen to know from experience that a jalapeno, | 7:06:25 | 7:06:28
which is the kind of pepper you would get on your pizza, | 7:06:28 | 7:06:31
it's got a little bit of a tingle to it, hasn't it? | 7:06:31 | 7:06:33
-A little bit spicy. -Mm-hm. | 7:06:33 | 7:06:34
Well, these are 200 times hotter than one of those. | 7:06:34 | 7:06:38
That's how bad boy these are. | 7:06:38 | 7:06:40
They look nice and juicy, though, don't they? | 7:06:40 | 7:06:42
Mm, do you want to try one? | 7:06:42 | 7:06:44
No, thank you. | 7:06:44 | 7:06:45

I've got to say, I had a brilliant time here at the Eden Project. | 7:06:48 | 7:06:50
I can't wait to get back in the Blue Peter garden. | 7:06:50 | 7:06:52
I'm going to plant a massive papaya tree. | 7:06:52 | 7:06:54
Oh, and don't worry, Radzi, I've er... | 7:06:54 | 7:06:56
I've got you some chillies. | 7:06:56 | 7:06:57
FLAMENCO MUSIC | 7:06:57 | 7:06:59
I loved that chilli challenge. Very funny. | 7:06:59 | 7:07:01
But now it's time for one of our annual highlights because | 7:07:01 | 7:07:04
for years and years, Blue Peter presenters have been showing you | 7:07:04 | 7:07:06
how to make your very own creative Christmas cards. | 7:07:06 | 7:07:10
They're always great and you can make them cheaply and easily. | 7:07:10 | 7:07:12
We've made so many over the years. | 7:07:12 | 7:07:14
They're very easy to make. | 7:07:14 | 7:07:15
Each card has a pipe cleaner. | 7:07:15 | 7:07:17
All you need is some brightly-coloured card, | 7:07:17 | 7:07:19
scraps of fabric and glitter. | 7:07:19 | 7:07:21
It is a card with a difference, as it has a built-in snow globe. | 7:07:21 | 7:07:25
This card is really personal and one that money can't buy. | 7:07:25 | 7:07:28
And there is that glitter. | 7:07:28 | 7:07:30
And there we have a finished star. | 7:07:30 | 7:07:33
And there we have our finished Christmas card. | 7:07:33 | 7:07:35
I'll give it a little shake there. | 7:07:35 | 7:07:37
-Woo! -APPLAUSE | 7:07:37 | 7:07:38
It really is the best make of the year, isn't it? | 7:07:38 | 7:07:40
You're going to love what we've come up with for 2015. | 7:07:40 | 7:07:42
Have a look at this! | 7:07:42 | 7:07:43
It's your very own Christmas card, with a surprise cracker. | 7:07:43 | 7:07:46
SHE LAUGHS | 7:07:46 | 7:07:48
We love it and I'm going to show you exactly how to make it. | 7:07:48 | 7:07:50
So, for that, you are going to need the following things. | 7:07:50 | 7:07:53
A template from the Blue Peter website. | 7:07:53 | 7:07:55
You'll need some corrugated card, so basically a cardboard box. | 7:07:55 | 7:07:58
Some sparkly or coloured card, | 7:07:58 | 7:08:00
thin, shiny plastic and, of course, | 7:08:00 | 7:08:01
loads of photos of your family and friends. | 7:08:01 | 7:08:03
You can make it really personal and really fun. | 7:08:03 | 7:08:05
It really is such a good make, so listen carefully. | 7:08:05 | 7:08:08
The first thing you need to do is head to that | 7:08:08 | 7:08:10
trusty old Blue Peter website. Get yourself one of these templates. | 7:08:10 | 7:08:13
You can see it's kind of split in half there. | 7:08:13 | 7:08:15
You've got an H shape | 7:08:15 | 7:08:17
and then you got the end of your crackers there. | 7:08:17 | 7:08:19
So you need to cut around those and, when you've done that, | 7:08:19 | 7:08:21
grab your corrugated card | 7:08:21 | 7:08:23
and your shiny paper, like so, | 7:08:23 | 7:08:25
and then you need to, once again, | 7:08:25 | 7:08:27
draw around them, all the way around the outside of the stencil | 7:08:27 | 7:08:29
and cut out those shapes. | 7:08:29 | 7:08:31
So, once you've done that... | 7:08:31 | 7:08:32
Try and be neat, because you will need those shapes to be pretty exact | 7:08:32 | 7:08:36
if you want your mechanism to work. | 7:08:36 | 7:08:38
So...we're going to use the H first. | 7:08:38 | 7:08:40
You can see I've cut around nice and neatly there. | 7:08:40 | 7:08:42
Take your time with that. Ask an adult to help. | 7:08:42 | 7:08:44
And, with the H, the first thing I'm going to do | 7:08:44 | 7:08:47
is grab my bit of plastic. | 7:08:47 | 7:08:49
You can see there, I've just got a little strip of plastic | 7:08:49 | 7:08:52
and all I've done there is used it | 7:08:52 | 7:08:53
off a previous greeting card. | 7:08:53 | 7:08:55
Nice and easy, but any plastic really will do. | 7:08:55 | 7:08:58
So...wrap it round your H, like so. | 7:08:58 | 7:09:00
It can be a bit fiddly, this bit, so take your time. | 7:09:00 | 7:09:03
And make sure it's not too tight, | 7:09:03 | 7:09:05
otherwise your mechanism isn't going to work. | 7:09:05 | 7:09:08
So I'll just stick it nice and neatly there. And you should see, | 7:09:08 | 7:09:10
when I hold it up, that that kind of just moves around. | 7:09:10 | 7:09:13
It's very delicate at this stage, | 7:09:13 | 7:09:14
but it is moving and that's going to make | 7:09:14 | 7:09:16
our cracker pop a little bit later on. | 7:09:16 | 7:09:18
Now, grab your two shiny bits. | 7:09:18 | 7:09:21
These are your cracker ends | 7:09:21 | 7:09:22
and turn one of them over, like so. | 7:09:22 | 7:09:25
Now, you've got your two ends and I've just put a little bit | 7:09:25 | 7:09:27
of double-sided sticky tape on the end there. | 7:09:27 | 7:09:29
So, grab your shiny side and just simply stick that down, | 7:09:29 | 7:09:32
make it really neat and line-up... | 7:09:32 | 7:09:35
Can you see that? | 7:09:35 | 7:09:36
..with the edge of your kind of H shape there. | 7:09:36 | 7:09:38
Then turn it over, like so, | 7:09:38 | 7:09:41
grab your other bit. | 7:09:41 | 7:09:43
And then stick it, | 7:09:43 | 7:09:44
like so, along that H. | 7:09:44 | 7:09:47
There we go. And, once you've patted it down, hopefully this will work... | 7:09:47 | 7:09:51
Eh! It certainly does! | 7:09:51 | 7:09:53
And, once you've done it nice and neatly, | 7:09:53 | 7:09:55
it should look something like this one. | 7:09:55 | 7:09:56
And it should really kind of pop like that. | 7:09:56 | 7:09:59
Now, if I grab this one, I'll just show you the back of it, | 7:09:59 | 7:10:01
because it is still looking a little bit messy at the back there. | 7:10:01 | 7:10:04
So, the next thing you need to do... | 7:10:04 | 7:10:06
grab your paper, like so. | 7:10:06 | 7:10:08
I've gone for silver, cos it's nice and festive. | 7:10:08 | 7:10:11
Should be A4 size. Cut that in half. | 7:10:11 | 7:10:14
Then, all I have done is just simply folded it in half again, like that. | 7:10:14 | 7:10:17
Now, we are going to plonk our cracker into the middle of the card. | 7:10:17 | 7:10:22
I am just going to use a little bit of double-sided sticky tape, like so. | 7:10:22 | 7:10:26
And then, neatly, hopefully, I am just going - oh, this side! - | 7:10:26 | 7:10:29
I am just going to plonk it in, like that. There we go. | 7:10:29 | 7:10:33
Hopefully, that will stick down. | 7:10:33 | 7:10:35
And then, fold your card over, | 7:10:35 | 7:10:37
like so. Make sure your sides are out, so they don't get stuck down. | 7:10:37 | 7:10:41
Once I have gone along, like that, | 7:10:41 | 7:10:43
it should work, fingers crossed! There we go! | 7:10:43 | 7:10:46
Now it's time for the fun bit, cos we get to decorate our cracker | 7:10:46 | 7:10:49
and make it look really realistic. | 7:10:49 | 7:10:51
So, for that, I have just, kind of, done a cracker shape, really. | 7:10:51 | 7:10:54
You can do anything you want. That is the whole fun part of this make - | 7:10:54 | 7:10:58
you can make it your own. | 7:10:58 | 7:10:59
I am going to make it look like a cracker, with my cracker middle. | 7:10:59 | 7:11:02
Boom. And then, time for a bit of decoration. | 7:11:02 | 7:11:05
So, it is Christmas, of course. I have gone for a beautiful little | 7:11:05 | 7:11:08
Christmas pud. That is made out of foam. We have just used a pen, | 7:11:08 | 7:11:11
to make the raisins on there. And some little baubles. Very pretty. | 7:11:11 | 7:11:15
Then, of course, all crackers have a little bit of glittery ribbon | 7:11:15 | 7:11:18
on the side. Again, we have used some foam there. | 7:11:18 | 7:11:22
I am going to put it on the side, | 7:11:22 | 7:11:24
so it looks like one bit of the ribbon. | 7:11:24 | 7:11:25
And on the other side here. It is really starting to take shape now. | 7:11:25 | 7:11:29
But we need our little surprise in there. So, I thought, | 7:11:29 | 7:11:32
"What does everyone want at Christmas?" Of course - | 7:11:32 | 7:11:35
Barney and Radzi's faces. That's definitely what I want. | 7:11:35 | 7:11:37
So, I have got Radzi on this side, in his little winter scarf. | 7:11:37 | 7:11:41
Look at him! And then, Barney, cos I'm missing him today, | 7:11:41 | 7:11:44
I have got him in his little winter scarf, there, as well! | 7:11:44 | 7:11:46
So, we are getting there! Look at that! Of course, you want it | 7:11:46 | 7:11:49
to stand up, looking very proud on your mantelpiece, so to do that, | 7:11:49 | 7:11:53
grab a little bit of extra card from earlier. | 7:11:53 | 7:11:56
I am just using some silver card, with a bit of double-sided tape. | 7:11:56 | 7:11:59
Plonk that on the back, like so. Doesn't have to be too neat, | 7:11:59 | 7:12:02
but leave a little space at the top for your Christmas message. | 7:12:02 | 7:12:06
Think how cool you can make it. | 7:12:06 | 7:12:07
You can put anything on there you want. | 7:12:07 | 7:12:09
It's your surprise cracker card! We made loads earlier. | 7:12:09 | 7:12:12
They really do look so cool. We have got one here of little Iggy's face! | 7:12:12 | 7:12:16
She is wearing a little hat. We have got a Christmas wreath there. | 7:12:16 | 7:12:19
Blue Peter ship. You can honestly do anything you want. | 7:12:19 | 7:12:23
All the details and the templates you are going to need are on | 7:12:23 | 7:12:26
the Blue Peter website... | 7:12:26 | 7:12:28
I love this, you know, and I am not the only one. Check this out. | 7:12:28 | 7:12:32
It's THE Christmas card that is taking the television world | 7:12:32 | 7:12:35
by storm. | 7:12:35 | 7:12:37
From everyone at Casualty, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. | 7:12:37 | 7:12:41
-BOTH: One, two, three! -Whay! Look at that! | 7:12:41 | 7:12:44
Thank you for this fantastic Christmas card you have made me. | 7:12:44 | 7:12:47
-Does it do something? -Yeah, we pull it. -Ooh! | 7:12:47 | 7:12:50
BOTH: Have a great Christmas. | 7:12:50 | 7:12:52
Thank you, Blue Peter! You're fantastic! | 7:12:52 | 7:12:55
Susanna Reid, of course it does something! | 7:12:57 | 7:12:59
It's your surprise card. We want you to make one. | 7:12:59 | 7:13:01
Send us anything you like of your Christmas card. | 7:13:01 | 7:13:04
The address you need is... | 7:13:04 | 7:13:08
I am going to go have a sit-down. Make your cards! Radzi... | 7:13:08 | 7:13:11
I love it when something is really simple, yet awesome, | 7:13:11 | 7:13:14
at the same time. Now, though, another Christmas tradition, | 7:13:14 | 7:13:17
which began on Blue Peter over 50 years ago, is this - | 7:13:17 | 7:13:22
the advent calendar. You came running, Linds. | 7:13:22 | 7:13:24
-We love the advent calendar. -We do! -The special part of it is, | 7:13:24 | 7:13:27
for the next four shows, we'll be lighting one of those candles, | 7:13:27 | 7:13:30
to count down until our Christmas show on December 17th. We can't wait. | 7:13:30 | 7:13:33
We really cannot wait. The candles here are battery-powered. | 7:13:33 | 7:13:37
Can we ask for the lights just to be dimmed a tiny bit? | 7:13:37 | 7:13:39
As I rotate this, you can see we've already got there one candle lit, | 7:13:39 | 7:13:43
which means we are only three weeks away from the Christmas show | 7:13:43 | 7:13:46
-and I cannot wait! -I have got your present. Have you got mine? -No. | 7:13:46 | 7:13:50
You need to go shopping, Radz. Let's walk this way, | 7:13:50 | 7:13:53
to the Big Badge Wall, covered in all of your brilliant post. | 7:13:53 | 7:13:56
And it is looking very colourful this week. Sophie, who is 12, from Essex, | 7:13:56 | 7:13:59
has done this. She has got a little Blue Peter Shelley there, | 7:13:59 | 7:14:02
the badge and, of course, she has written us a little | 7:14:02 | 7:14:05
Shelley the Tortoise poem. If I open it up, one line is, | 7:14:05 | 7:14:08
"Shelley loves being with the BP Crew | 7:14:08 | 7:14:10
"As there's always so much she can do." | 7:14:10 | 7:14:12
Sophie, we love it. You're a genius. Thank you. | 7:14:12 | 7:14:15
I also love what Ava from West Sussex has made. Look at this! | 7:14:15 | 7:14:18
This me at the World Gymnastics Championships, doing a handstand, | 7:14:18 | 7:14:21
with a big smile on my face. Why? Because I now love gymnastics. | 7:14:21 | 7:14:25
-Ava, thank you so much. -That was my favourite of your challenges. | 7:14:25 | 7:14:28
-Really? -Clemmy, who is 12, has sent this brilliant one in. | 7:14:28 | 7:14:31
Have a look. It is little Barney, with his glasses on and his beard. | 7:14:31 | 7:14:34
I love that. Holding his drone. It says, "Blink and you might miss it!" | 7:14:34 | 7:14:38
-They were SO fast, these drones. -Unbelievably quick. -Amazing. | 7:14:38 | 7:14:41
Thank you to every single one of you who made a piece of art that is on | 7:14:41 | 7:14:45
this board here and to anyone who sent in post. Keep them coming in, | 7:14:45 | 7:14:48
-with regards to the Christmas cards. -If you do send something in, | 7:14:48 | 7:14:51
remember, we need your full name, your address and we need your | 7:14:51 | 7:14:54
date of birth. Otherwise, we can't give you a BP badge - | 7:14:54 | 7:14:57
and you definitely want one. If you are between 6 and 15, | 7:14:57 | 7:15:00
you can get your hands on one, because it is all about the badge. | 7:15:00 | 7:15:03
It is also all about the Blue Peter website. | 7:15:03 | 7:15:06
There is loads going on there. We have got the Blue Peter fan club, | 7:15:06 | 7:15:09
which happens twice a week, on a Tuesday and on a Sunday. | 7:15:09 | 7:15:11
There is also an exclusive clip, including a drawing made by | 7:15:11 | 7:15:14
a Hollywood director, the man behind The Good Dinosaur, | 7:15:14 | 7:15:18
who has drawn this picture of a dinosaur, with bits on it sent in | 7:15:18 | 7:15:22
by you guys. So, well done for that. Jump online if you want to see that. | 7:15:22 | 7:15:25
However, now it is time for me to refine my climbing skills, | 7:15:25 | 7:15:28
to experience sea survival, because I am about to enter | 7:15:28 | 7:15:32
one of THE most extreme working environments anywhere. Help. | 7:15:32 | 7:15:37
There are over 6,000 wind turbines | 7:15:40 | 7:15:42
in the UK, which help generate power for our homes. | 7:15:42 | 7:15:46
But how much do we actually know about wind energy? | 7:15:46 | 7:15:49
Well, to answer that, I will be going to the top of a turbine | 7:15:49 | 7:15:52
in the sea, to find out how man can harness the power of the wind. | 7:15:52 | 7:15:56
But before I can go near 130 metres of turbine, I need to undergo | 7:15:58 | 7:16:05
some serious training. | 7:16:05 | 7:16:07
I have come to this training centre, where you can learn | 7:16:07 | 7:16:10
some of the skills you need for some of the most extreme | 7:16:10 | 7:16:13
working environments in the world. | 7:16:13 | 7:16:15
Because an emergency could occur while I am at sea or working | 7:16:16 | 7:16:20
at heights, I need to prepare for the worst. | 7:16:20 | 7:16:22
So, I will be taking on four stages of tough turbine training. | 7:16:22 | 7:16:27
Stage one... | 7:16:28 | 7:16:31
'OK, so I am in a pool. It is actually quite relaxing. | 7:16:31 | 7:16:35
'All under the watchful gaze of Ken, my gentle sea survival instructor.' | 7:16:35 | 7:16:40
Come on! Come on! Push it out! Come on! | 7:16:40 | 7:16:43
Keep on going! Come on! | 7:16:43 | 7:16:45
Come on, lads! | 7:16:45 | 7:16:46
I have done a lot of courses in the army and, mainly, I find that | 7:16:48 | 7:16:52
motivation is my biggest asset. | 7:16:52 | 7:16:54
It's imminent! | 7:16:54 | 7:16:55
'Sea survival just got serious. and the next part is even tougher.' | 7:16:57 | 7:17:01
Because work on a wind turbine can be truly dangerous, | 7:17:01 | 7:17:04
you don't know how or when you will have to get off that wind turbine. | 7:17:04 | 7:17:08
So, if the worst comes to the worst, you might have to do what I am about | 7:17:08 | 7:17:11
to do now, which is step off. | 7:17:11 | 7:17:13
Look straight ahead. Step off. | 7:17:13 | 7:17:16
'And Ken's punishing training just kept on coming!' | 7:17:18 | 7:17:22
Come on! Push it out! | 7:17:22 | 7:17:23
Come on! That fire is coming at you here! | 7:17:23 | 7:17:25
Come on! Move it! | 7:17:25 | 7:17:27
Come on, lads, push it out! | 7:17:28 | 7:17:30
Stage two... | 7:17:41 | 7:17:43
'If we need to jump into the sea, a life raft would be deployed. | 7:17:45 | 7:17:48
'I need to be able to climb on top of it and flip it over, | 7:17:48 | 7:17:51
'using just my own body weight.' | 7:17:51 | 7:17:55
'Here goes.' | 7:17:55 | 7:17:56
'Whoa! I did it!' | 7:17:59 | 7:18:00
At sea, speed is vital to our survival, as we would be facing | 7:18:02 | 7:18:04
freezing water temperatures. | 7:18:04 | 7:18:07
'With the raft the right way up, the team and I need to get inside | 7:18:07 | 7:18:10
'as quickly as possible.' | 7:18:10 | 7:18:12
That was 50 seconds! | 7:18:12 | 7:18:15
'Nice work, guys.' | 7:18:15 | 7:18:17
Stage three... | 7:18:18 | 7:18:21
'The most dangerous part of my adventure is transferring | 7:18:22 | 7:18:25
'from the boat to the turbine.' | 7:18:25 | 7:18:27
All that's between me and the sea is a steep - and I mean steep - ladder. | 7:18:27 | 7:18:32
And so to help me get to grips with the climb | 7:18:32 | 7:18:34
is Michael, my instructor. | 7:18:34 | 7:18:36
Well, Michael, I am kitted out, ready and raring to go. | 7:18:36 | 7:18:39
What exactly have I got on here? | 7:18:39 | 7:18:41
First of all, you have your harness, to keep you safe. | 7:18:41 | 7:18:43
And then you have your lanyards, two of them. | 7:18:43 | 7:18:46
-What they'll do is catch you if you do fall. -Very important. | 7:18:46 | 7:18:50
With my harness in place, I attempt my first climb. But there are rules. | 7:18:50 | 7:18:56
I have to keep three points of my body in constant contact with | 7:18:56 | 7:18:59
-the ladder... -Good. -..as well as one of my hooks. | 7:18:59 | 7:19:02
On top of this, my hook should be placed three rungs above me | 7:19:04 | 7:19:07
on the ladder, and this takes practice. | 7:19:07 | 7:19:10
That's done, that's done, now take off the... | 7:19:12 | 7:19:15
-No, the rope! -Great. | 7:19:15 | 7:19:19
Tell you what, there's a lot to remember. | 7:19:21 | 7:19:23
It is one thing doing it in here, a warm, comfortable environment, | 7:19:23 | 7:19:27
-but actually, if it matters, would you panic? -That's what this is for. | 7:19:27 | 7:19:31
No panicking. | 7:19:31 | 7:19:33
Stage four, the controlled descent. | 7:19:34 | 7:19:37
In order to complete my training, I need to test my | 7:19:38 | 7:19:41
head for heights as I'm lowered down this massive tower. | 7:19:41 | 7:19:44
I am now 30 metres above the ground on a training tower. | 7:19:46 | 7:19:49
Basically, this is going to simulate what would happen | 7:19:49 | 7:19:52
if something were to go wrong on the actual wind turbine | 7:19:52 | 7:19:55
and I would need to evacuate. | 7:19:55 | 7:19:57
So for now, it's time for me to let go of this rope, | 7:19:57 | 7:19:59
keep my fingers crossed and say, "Mum, I'm flying!" | 7:19:59 | 7:20:03
Yes! Whoohoo! | 7:20:03 | 7:20:06
Oh, yeah! Mum, I can fly! | 7:20:08 | 7:20:11
Yeah. | 7:20:11 | 7:20:13 | |
There's a leap of faith at the very top | 7:20:19 | 7:20:22
when you think, "I'm trusting the rope. All I've got is this rope." | 7:20:22 | 7:20:26
And then you just enjoy it and you float down. | 7:20:26 | 7:20:28
You feel like a superhero. I like training for the wind turbine. | 7:20:28 | 7:20:31
Bring on the real thing. | 7:20:31 | 7:20:34
Don't miss next week, | 7:20:34 | 7:20:35
when I take you to one of the most extreme working environments | 7:20:35 | 7:20:38
I have ever seen, and put my training to the test. | 7:20:38 | 7:20:42
There are some really cool jobs, | 7:20:45 | 7:20:47
and working on a wind turbine is one of them. | 7:20:47 | 7:20:50
Now, though, from wind to rain. | 7:20:50 | 7:20:53
It's time to welcome back to Blue Peter Mr Greg Foot! | 7:20:53 | 7:20:57
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 7:20:57 | 7:20:59
It's Greg. What have you got for us today? I'm so excited. | 7:20:59 | 7:21:02
Right, I want to bring the weather from outdoors indoors. OK. | 7:21:02 | 7:21:06
I want to make cloud and rain right here in the Blue Peter studio. | 7:21:06 | 7:21:09
I definitely want to see that as well. What's this? | 7:21:09 | 7:21:11
Let's start with the cloud. So I'm going to make you a little cloud | 7:21:11 | 7:21:14
and then we're going to super-size it. First of all, question for you. | 7:21:14 | 7:21:17
-What is a cloud made of? -Easy, water. -Good man. Yeah, water. | 7:21:17 | 7:21:21
But the real question is how does that water clump together | 7:21:21 | 7:21:24
into a cloud and how does it stay up there? | 7:21:24 | 7:21:26
So all around us is air, | 7:21:26 | 7:21:27
and that's made of a whole bunch of different gases. | 7:21:27 | 7:21:29
You've got oxygen that you breathe in. | 7:21:29 | 7:21:31
You've got carbon dioxide that you breathe out. | 7:21:31 | 7:21:33
A whole host of others, including water, but as a gas. | 7:21:33 | 7:21:36
-We call it water vapour. -OK. | 7:21:36 | 7:21:38
Now, as all that gas rises, that water vapour rises, | 7:21:38 | 7:21:40
it cools down as it gets to the top of the atmosphere. | 7:21:40 | 7:21:43
And when it cools down enough, it can turn from a gas to a liquid. | 7:21:43 | 7:21:47
If you think about when you breathe on a really cold window, like that. | 7:21:47 | 7:21:50
-Oh, condensation? -Yeah. So the water vapour, | 7:21:50 | 7:21:52
the gas in your breath, cools down into little droplets that you see. | 7:21:52 | 7:21:55
It is called condensation. That's all a cloud is. | 7:21:55 | 7:21:58
-Just condensed water vapour. Now, can you start pumping? -Absolutely. | 7:21:58 | 7:22:01
Some eye protection for you first. | 7:22:01 | 7:22:03
-Remember, safety never takes a day off on Blue Peter. -True that. | 7:22:03 | 7:22:06
Right, 15 pumps, please. So what you're doing right now is | 7:22:06 | 7:22:09
you're pumping air into the bottle. | 7:22:09 | 7:22:11
And the air has got water vapour. | 7:22:11 | 7:22:12
I will put a little bit of water in there as well. | 7:22:12 | 7:22:14
So you're building up the pressure. | 7:22:14 | 7:22:16
When the pressure is enough, I'm going to pop the top off. | 7:22:16 | 7:22:18
The pressure is going to decrease, which actually cools | 7:22:18 | 7:22:20
the whole thing down. So it's going to be like | 7:22:20 | 7:22:22
what happens up in the atmosphere. It cools it down and hopefully, | 7:22:22 | 7:22:25
we'll get a cloud. So it needs to actually have something to | 7:22:25 | 7:22:28
grip hold of. Those water droplets need to grip onto something. | 7:22:28 | 7:22:31
Up there in the sky, it could be salt from the sea, | 7:22:31 | 7:22:34
it could be dust, it could be soot from a wildfire. | 7:22:34 | 7:22:36
-I put a little bit of soot in here. Are you ready? -Yes, I am. | 7:22:36 | 7:22:40
Three, two, one! | 7:22:40 | 7:22:42
-Yes! -Yeah! -See that cloud in there? | 7:22:42 | 7:22:45
There's a cloud in the bottle. | 7:22:45 | 7:22:46
There is probably millions of tiny little water droplets | 7:22:46 | 7:22:49
-in there to make our cloud. -That's crazy. | 7:22:49 | 7:22:51
So I'm going to make a much bigger version of that to fill | 7:22:51 | 7:22:54
the whole studio afterwards. | 7:22:54 | 7:22:56
-The question, I guess, is how it actually stays up there. -Yeah... | 7:22:56 | 7:22:59
And it's because the droplets are so, so tiny. | 7:22:59 | 7:23:02
They're surrounded by air, | 7:23:02 | 7:23:03
they're light enough to float up there. | 7:23:03 | 7:23:05
But once they start banging together and the cloud grows, | 7:23:05 | 7:23:08
the droplets get so big that they can start to fall. | 7:23:08 | 7:23:10
-And that of course is... -Rain. -Rain. | 7:23:10 | 7:23:12
Question for you, Radzi from Blue Peter. What shape is a raindrop? | 7:23:12 | 7:23:16
-That's easy. It's like a teardrop, so it looks a bit like that. -Uh-uh! | 7:23:16 | 7:23:20
I'm going to show you. Right, this is a raindrop levitation device. | 7:23:20 | 7:23:24
-Yes! -You're going to love this. | 7:23:24 | 7:23:26
We obviously can't skydive next to a raindrop to see its shape. | 7:23:26 | 7:23:30
So what this is going to do is air is going to rush up | 7:23:30 | 7:23:32
and I'm going to try to keep a raindrop in place, | 7:23:32 | 7:23:34
so the air is going to be rushing around it. | 7:23:34 | 7:23:36
-It's the same as what happens as it falls. -Wow. | 7:23:36 | 7:23:38
-So, let's give this a go. My air is on. -Yeah. | 7:23:38 | 7:23:41
Now what I'm going to try to do is put a raindrop in there. | 7:23:41 | 7:23:45
More air! There we go, there we go! | 7:23:45 | 7:23:50
-Oh! -Now, that's not bad. | 7:23:50 | 7:23:52
-Very hard to do live. -Absolutely. | 7:23:52 | 7:23:55
-So I filmed it in slow motion earlier in the rehearsal. -Amazing! | 7:23:55 | 7:23:58
Have a look and tell me what the shape is. Watch this. | 7:23:58 | 7:24:00
This is amazing. Watch. | 7:24:00 | 7:24:02
-Out it comes. -It's flat! -Yes. | 7:24:02 | 7:24:05
-It's really flat. -Look underneath. How gorgeous is that? | 7:24:05 | 7:24:10
This, Radz, is my favourite fact. | 7:24:10 | 7:24:14
You'd think a raindrop is round. Spherical, like a ball. | 7:24:14 | 7:24:17
When they are really, really small, they are that shape. | 7:24:17 | 7:24:19
But when they get bigger, they fall, | 7:24:19 | 7:24:21
and they fall fast, like 15-20 miles per hour. | 7:24:21 | 7:24:24
They're falling and all that air is hitting them underneath. | 7:24:24 | 7:24:27
And it squashes the bottom of the raindrop | 7:24:27 | 7:24:28
and you get that beautiful burger bun shape. | 7:24:28 | 7:24:31
Why you said teardrop is you always see it running down a window. | 7:24:31 | 7:24:34
Or dripping out of the tap. | 7:24:34 | 7:24:36
What that does is it pulls some of it behind it | 7:24:36 | 7:24:38
and it kind of creates this tail. There you go. | 7:24:38 | 7:24:41
-There you go. Is it all a big myth? -Yeah. | 7:24:41 | 7:24:43
Now, Greg, I hate to hurry you but I want to see the big one! | 7:24:43 | 7:24:45
Let's do it. Come over here, my friend. | 7:24:45 | 7:24:47
Right, what you're going to need is to put on this poncho. | 7:24:47 | 7:24:50
Because this could get a little bit damp. | 7:24:50 | 7:24:52
Remember, a cloud is just trillions of drops of water vapour | 7:24:52 | 7:24:55
-that have condensed, that have cooled down into water droplets. -OK. | 7:24:55 | 7:24:59
So, Tom, can you bring all my ingredients for a cloud, please? | 7:24:59 | 7:25:02
-Tom, come out, my friend. -Thanks, Tom. -What's in this? | 7:25:02 | 7:25:05
In this is everything you need to make a cloud. Thanks, buddy. | 7:25:05 | 7:25:08
So what we're going to do is we have made ourselves nice and safe. | 7:25:08 | 7:25:12
Now, we need something very, very cold, because when it's up there | 7:25:12 | 7:25:15
in the cloud, that's what causes the cloud to condense, to cool down. | 7:25:15 | 7:25:19
So what I've got here is liquid nitrogen. | 7:25:19 | 7:25:22
Whilst you're doing that, I do have to say, please, | 7:25:22 | 7:25:24
for goodness' sake, do not try this at home. That's why we've got masks. | 7:25:24 | 7:25:28
-Greg knows exactly what he's doing. -We've got some liquid nitrogen. | 7:25:28 | 7:25:32
Now I've also got some hot water. | 7:25:32 | 7:25:34
The hot water is going to go into my liquid nitrogen. | 7:25:34 | 7:25:36
It's going to turn it from a liquid into a gas. | 7:25:36 | 7:25:38
Cold gas up in the air, that's going to cool down the water vapour | 7:25:38 | 7:25:41
-in the sky and hopefully make a cloud. -I want to see this! | 7:25:41 | 7:25:44
-Are we ready for this? Everyone on the floor happy? -Yeah! | 7:25:44 | 7:25:47
OK, so in three, two, one! | 7:25:47 | 7:25:50
ALL: Whoa! Wahey! | 7:25:52 | 7:25:55
-That is amazing. We've just made a cloud on Blue Peter, Mum. -Yeah! | 7:25:55 | 7:25:59
Can we see that again? That's it in slow motion. Look at that! | 7:25:59 | 7:26:02
-Oh, that looks good. -That's nice! -There it is. Our cloud. | 7:26:02 | 7:26:07
All those water droplets in the air. Yes! | 7:26:07 | 7:26:09
Greg, I love when you come on, because we learn so much. | 7:26:09 | 7:26:11
-But come over this way. -This is the science I love! | 7:26:11 | 7:26:14
Radzi absolutely loves this. At the start of the show, | 7:26:14 | 7:26:16
we asked you lot at home to get in touch with us and let us know | 7:26:16 | 7:26:19
if anything could rain out of the sky, what would it be and why? | 7:26:19 | 7:26:23
-There you go, Radz. Oh, you're quite wet. -I'm very wet. I'm in the cloud! | 7:26:23 | 7:26:29
Navy Blue Pickle Star Fish - great name - | 7:26:29 | 7:26:31
says it should rain massive, buttery crumpets. I like that. | 7:26:31 | 7:26:35
Now, I like Gold Robo-Bluebell Star, because they say sweets, | 7:26:35 | 7:26:39
dogs, cats, horses, unicorns, hamsters and crowns. You're not... | 7:26:39 | 7:26:42
-You're hedging your bets. I love it. -This is great. | 7:26:42 | 7:26:44
Someone's gone for a food theme. | 7:26:44 | 7:26:45
Indigo Singing Orca has gone for spaghetti bolognese | 7:26:45 | 7:26:48
-and garlic bread. -Such a good meal, though. Amethyst Vanilla... | 7:26:48 | 7:26:52
I want to read you a really, really good one. This is for you. | 7:26:52 | 7:26:55
Crimson Flute Canary says magical homework pens that just do | 7:26:55 | 7:26:58
-all your homework for you. -Genius. -Love it. Love it. | 7:26:58 | 7:27:03
Now, Clarice Cheeky Swan says, "I would make it rain computers | 7:27:03 | 7:27:07
-"because I can use them when I'm not allowed." I like it. -Cheeky. | 7:27:07 | 7:27:13
Here's another animal one. Amethyst Vanilla Chicken | 7:27:13 | 7:27:15
wants it to rain chimpanzees, | 7:27:15 | 7:27:17
-orang-utans and gibbons. -Big monkey fan. I like that. | 7:27:17 | 7:27:20
I kind of agree with this one. | 7:27:20 | 7:27:21
Lime Smiling Conker says, "I would make it..." | 7:27:21 | 7:27:23
There's so much cloud over there still! | 7:27:23 | 7:27:25
"I would make it rain dogs, as I really like dogs, | 7:27:25 | 7:27:27
"and then I could have loads." I like that. | 7:27:27 | 7:27:30
-Imagine loads of Iggies just coming out the sky. -Pretty sweet. | 7:27:30 | 7:27:34
Now, time for one more. | 7:27:34 | 7:27:36
"I would rain genies." | 7:27:36 | 7:27:38
So they have found a flaw in the question and exploited it. | 7:27:38 | 7:27:41
-Good work. -As you know, if you have been on the Blue Peter fanclub page, | 7:27:41 | 7:27:44
we have been playing presenter bingo and the phrase today was, | 7:27:44 | 7:27:47
"It's all about the badge." | 7:27:47 | 7:27:48
And the person who got that was, I can reveal... | 7:27:48 | 7:27:51
Quartz Brainy Kid. | 7:27:51 | 7:27:54
So, Quartz Brainy Kid, well done to you. Good job. | 7:27:54 | 7:27:57
That's all that we've got time for today, | 7:27:57 | 7:27:59
but make sure that you are watching next week. | 7:27:59 | 7:28:01
There is loads happening, including Nathan Sykes, who is going to be here | 7:28:01 | 7:28:04
to perform his brand-new single, and trust me, it is a beautiful one. | 7:28:04 | 7:28:08
Now, my training is done, but it's now time for me | 7:28:08 | 7:28:11
to climb up a wind turbine and see just how it works. | 7:28:11 | 7:28:14
Make sure you watch that. | 7:28:14 | 7:28:15
And this is a bit of a tongue twister, | 7:28:15 | 7:28:17
but we're looking at the amazing tech behind the puppet penguins | 7:28:17 | 7:28:19
in Mr Popper's Penguin Musical. | 7:28:19 | 7:28:22
Alliteration! Nailed it, boom! | 7:28:22 | 7:28:24
-See you next week. Bye! -Bye-bye! | 7:28:24 | 7:28:26 |
