I get to grips with a super speedy car that's trying to go,

get this, 1,000 miles per hour.

I'm not even joking.

The idea of the crown is that you light one candle on each of

the Sundays before Christmas and it helps you to look forward

to Christmas Day itself.

With our Advent crown, we light one candle on each

of the four programmes before Christmas.

I think it's super, you can make such a large decoration out of just bits and pieces.

This bad boy was introduced to Blue Peter over half a century ago,

which is why it's one of the most iconic makes ever on Blue Peter.

It's such a simple one, as well.

It's four coat hangers, loads of tinsel and four candles.

I know you're thinking, how on earth is Lindsey's sleeve not on fire?

That's because these are battery-powered candles.

That's because, as a philosopher once said,

health and safety never takes a day off.

That philosopher was Tim Ward, but they used to use wax candles.

cos this year is our 60th Blue Peter Christmas Special,

so we've jazzed things up a bit.

The Advent crown has bought so many happy memories to

so many people across the UK for years

and recently I went to catch up with The Dengineers for a very

special Children In Need project to spread some more happy memories of our own.

-Check it out.

-It's massive!

How's your memory? Can you remember all the way back to May?

Back then, The Dengineers, Joe and Lauren, paid us a visit

and asked for help building a brand-new happy park

at Claire House Hospice in Liverpool.

What this is going to be is loads of happy memories sandblasted

onto a path, so it is there forever!

You sent in hundreds of your pictures and memories

and The Dengineers' team turned some of them into beautiful paving stones

that will create the centrepiece of their biggest den yet.

But I want to go behind-the-scenes of this CBBC hit to see

the work for myself.

But I don't want to be spotted.

OK. It's just through this way, come with me.

No-one is going to recognise me. This is great.

Just over there, they are setting up for the day.

This really is behind-the-scenes on The Dengineers.

Sorry, I wanted to get behind the scenes, really get into it.

Why? Why would she do that?

In my head, my disguise worked a little better than that.

At least I have got Joe to show me around this massive build.

Hello, mate, keep going. No, it's all right. Carry on.

-This is brilliant.

-A proper building site.

-Yeah, you can see it is.

What's going on here, Joe?

The biggest den we have ever done.

It's something like 50 crew building six different dens.

The hospice that we're doing it for, there's so many families, so many children,

they can all get involved and have fun.

This is as close to the work I get, because I break stuff.

Claire House care for children who are often very ill

and the team want to create an outside area they can enjoy.

Children like George, who is helping to lay the new path

with lead designer, Sedge.

Whilst George gets to work, I meet his sister, Ava, to talk about what

this build means to her.

Ava, what is it like at the moment when you play with George?

Because I know he is a little bit poorly.

How does that affect your playtime?

Do you get to play when he's in there?

No, not at all.

On the wards, you are on with other people,

you don't get your own room, so you can't really play.

It is quite hard.

Which I guess is why this place here is so amazing,

because it's a space where you guys can come together

and do whatever you want and run about and really play, isn't it?

Yeah, I'm really excited to have this den because it is going to help

a lot of people and I think it will really help George too.

-You are quite a big Blue Peter fan?

-Yeah, I really love it.

-Who is the best presenter?

-You.

-We have to do a little bit of peeling.

-Peeling?

-Come here, look, I'll show you.

-I like peeling things.

-OK, this is not going to be something you enjoy.

OK. Are you for real? Is that how much comes off at a time?

We'll be here all day. Where do I start?

Anywhere you like. That's the beauty of this.

-Hey, look, I've got a big bit.

Easy!

The BP tile takes its place surrounded by some

of your wonderful designs, from horses to holidays.

There is even a tile designed by footballer Steven Gerrard.

They have all played a part in transforming this area to

create a beautiful happy path at the heart of this awe-inspiring den.

What an amazing day it's been, just seeing all these people

come together to really make this project happen,

is actually quite incredible.

And to know that you lot at home, our Blue Peter audience,

you have been a little part of that.

and I think, er, I think they're good. I think my work here is done.

Oh, that was a bit ropey.

Hold on tight, because it's time for a very, very fast car. Voom!

On BP, we absolutely love a challenge.

But I have come to Cornwall to meet a team who may love pushing

themselves to the limit even more.

In 1997, they set the record for the fastest speed

ever travelled on land,

driving a car at 773 mph.

But these guys don't think that's fast enough,

so they will be attempting to break 1,000 miles an hour.

I will say that again. 1,000 mph.

And they are going to be using this, the Bloodhound SSC.

Powered by a jet engine and a rocket, over the next few years

the team are hoping to break the land speed record in South Africa

and eventually reach 1,000 mph.

To get there, they need to do tests, lots of tests.

-OK, Andy, happy with your car checks?

-She's good.

I have been given amazing access to help out at the team's latest trials.

It's not every day you get a Bloodhound car into position.

The engineering that will make this thing move is cutting-edge.

It's got more horsepower than 800 family cars

and the inside of the rocket that powers it

is twice as hot as the centre of a volcano.

This is not the first time BP and the Bloodhound have met. Oh, no!

A couple of years ago, a certain Barney Harwood went to find out how something like this is built.

In 2015, Barney went to Bristol to help out at the very

beginning of the car's construction.

This is a jet engine we are looking at here, isn't it?

Yes, this is a jet engine out of a Eurofighter Typhoon

and this is what we use to get the car rolling.

This machine actually has three engines and is held

together by a carbon fibre frame, just like Formula 1 cars.

Back then, it was all in bits,

so Barney got the chance to start putting it together.

The ultimate Blue Peter make, this, isn't it?

It was a job he took very seriously.

HE MAKES CAR NOISES

Super speed.

Brrrrrrrrr....

After Barney's, er...help,

it took more than two years of work to get the car

ready for today's testing.

So, let's catch up and find out

exactly what's gone on in those two years.

-Jules, how are you doing?

-Hi, Lindsey.

What's happened since we last saw you? Quite a lot by the looks of it.

When you last saw the car, it was all in pieces.

We've put it all together now.

We've come down to Cornwall Airport

and we started off doing really slow tests down the runway

to make sure everything worked.

How fast are you going today?

-We started off at 20mph..

-OK.

-..and now we're building up to 200mph.

That's already pretty speedy, isn't it?

Today's test is just one step towards the final target, 1,000mph,

but it will give the team an idea of how the car will react.

Here to see it are local schools, eager to learn about the science

of speed, and I'm discovering how heavy all that technology can be.

Am I pushing this on my own? Come on!

It's not that light!

An engine as big as this needs a bit of a kick-start,

and I'm getting to do just that.

It's fairly heavy, but...

OK, that is quite heavy.

-OK, pushing it in...

-Give it a good push.

Driver RAF Wing Commander Andy Green holds the current land speed record,

and uses all his experience as he goes through final safety checks.

I cannot imagine what is going through Andy's head

as he prepares to go 200mph.

This has gone from being really fun

and a bit of a laugh, to quite serious.

Everyone is really focused.

Everything is set.

It's time to see what this car can do.

-RADIO:

-You're clear to roll.

Surface wind is six o'clock at 13 knots.

Andy's in position, it's go time.

-ANDY:

-30, delta...

This is going to be loud.

Look at the heat!

It's moving!

Whoo!

-RADIO:

-Ready to start.

Five, four,

three, two, one.

ENGINE BLASTS

Oh!

Wow! That is fast.

Bloodhound hits 200mph for just a matter of seconds.

Any longer and it could run out of runway.

But in the open South African desert, that won't be a problem.

I cannot imagine what 1,000mph is going to look like.

Unbelievable!

And those few seconds seem to have wowed the crowd.

I felt like the hairs on my neck were standing up.

Really loud. It just sounded amazing.

It was pretty nerve-racking,

because you never know what could happen, going that fast.

It was really cool. It made me vibrate.

For the team, it seems mission accomplished.

For now.

Hopefully all the kids enjoyed seeing it.

I was going to say, the crowd went wild!

-They were loving it.

-That's exactly what we're after.

That is why you're here.

That's almost like the dress rehearsal done, and now you've

got to do the real thing in South Africa at five times that speed.

-Do you think you can do it?

-I'm absolutely certain we'll do it.

Blue Peter has been there from the very beginning to bring you

the latest from this rocket-powered record attempt.

What an incredible day that was.

I am genuinely in awe and feeling totally inspired,

hopefully you are, too.

All that's left to say is a huge good luck to

the team in South Africa.

I know they can get that world record.

That was just the most amazing thing to experience.

a weight on the Christmas card, and try to open it quickly.

-I'd love to know.

This is what you need. Tell 'em, Anne-Marie.

-Give this lady a round of applause.

-APPLAUSE

We're starting off with that A4 card and folding it in half.

We're going to do this quickly, you'll have loads of time at home.

I'm opening it back up and you can see I've put four dots there.

We're going to make them symmetrical

on either side of the fold.

Put a bit of Blu-Tack underneath

and I'm going to press my way to making four holes.

Please do make sure you ask

a parent or guardian's advice, so we do it safety.

Tim Ward wouldn't be happy.

Health and safety never takes a day off.

Anne-Marie, while I do that, can you cut the piece of elastic,

which gives our snow launcher that extra bit of launch?

If we now push it through this hole here.

And then we're going to tie that into... Thank you, Anne-Marie.

..into a cheeky knot.

It's worth adding, this is a normal elastic band.

No tricks, no wizardry, no smoke and mirrors here.

I'm going to tie that knot there, force feed it through,

and do the same on the other side.

Once you have done that, in all four holes...

Here is one, Anne-Marie!

This one, we made earlier!

And it will look like this.

We've got Sellotape on the back -

or sticky tape, rather, other brands are available -

on the back, just to secure it in place.

You can see it's not that rigid.

That's where the next piece of card comes in, which helps disguise it.

-When you have done that, it will look like this.

-Mmm.

-Rather decorative and all rather nice.

-Mmm.

-Can we have a mmm, like Anne-Marie just did?

-Mmm.

-Mmm.

So, now we are going to make the snow launcher itself.

Anne-Marie, could you fold lengthways, thirds, please?

-Yes.

-Thank you very much.

-Once you've done that, I will hold it in place.

-Mm-hm.

If you could thread it underneath the elastic band. Perfect.

All you have to do now is simply fold over the snow launcher.

You'll have more time than ourselves.

On the end there, on that little tab, we will add a bit of glue.

-If you will.

-Mm-hm.

-Oh, I've got your finger.

-No worries, we are all friends here.

So we've got that in place.

We're going to forget about the launcher for a second

and we're going to focus on the decorating.

If I get this one here, you are thinking,

why an earth is there a piece of ribbon down the middle?

That's to give its gift effect a little bit later on.

That will all become very clear.

Anne-Marie, you're so talented,

and you actually made these templates earlier, didn't you?

-It took a while, it took a while.

-You persevered on, Anne-Marie.

I really admire that.

If you'd like to stick those on in any fashion.

There we are, went for symmetrical, I like it!

The snow launcher requires some snow,

and all we've done is taken some recycled paper holes.
