Awesome 2017! Blue Peter

In 2017, Blue Peter entered its 60th year,

and in doing so it hit the headlines.

Presenters test new washing detergent,

Radzi offends pilot,

and Lindsey challenges shark to a game of hide and seek.

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

It wasn't like that at all.

Yeah, no. Let's take a look back at what really happened.

-And welcome to a very

special look back at an awesome 12 months on Blue Peter.

-Hey!

-I knew he was going to do that. It has been amazing.

We've had some brilliant competitions and actually, in total,

we've had over 30,000 of you getting involved.

Let's talk about the post, because, check this out,

you sent in so much post to us,

that we could have filled

1,646 Big Badge walls.

That deserves an applause.

Come on, everyone, that's amazing.

As well as that, we've had makes and bakes galore.

Do you remember the Shelley costume?

That was absolutely incredible.

We've had pancakes with The Sorted Food Team

and even the Minion cupcakes, who can forget?

Who can forget my favourite bake of all?

I know what you're going to say.

The emoji poo, people.

It was a little bit smelly but it was very tasty.

And of course it wouldn't be BP without some amazing challenges.

Do you remember the mission friction zip wire challenge?

-Yes!

-Who knew that two books interwoven like that,

could take so much weight?

It was good but scary.

Who also knew a man that was also 7ft tall could serve that fast?

His name is John Isner,

one of the fastest servers of all time

and I attempted to return one of the serves, it was very scary.

-And he made you look tiny as well.

-He made me look very small.

Something that made me feel tiny was those sharks.

My shark challenge, one of the scariest things,

probably the scariest thing,

I've ever done on Blue Peter but we got through it.

One of the muckiest challenges we've ever taken part in was when me and

Linds trained with the Royal Marine commandos, run VT!

We're experiencing what it's like to train

to be Royal Marines commandos.

Over the next 24 hours, you're going to live, eat,

and breathe like a Royal Marine recruit.

We're taking on the iconic Mud Run.

Set in the muddy estuary next to the marines' training base,

the Mud Run has become legendary as being one of the toughest parts of a

commando's training and we're going to experience what it feels like.

Over the years it's been a classic Blue Peter challenge and for me

personally, it's been something I've always wanted to try,

having seen Simon and Matt do it when I was growing up.

We're tired, we're wet but it's time to meet the mud.

Can I just say, it stinks and it's cold.

We're already wet, so this can only go one way.

-Let's go!

-Argh!

Trust me, nothing prepares you for the mud!

Just call crawling through it is so difficult.

I've never done anything like this.

But crawling is just the beginning,

instructor Ben wants us up and running again.

-On your feet!

-Then, back down to crawling.

Get down!

That expression of running through treacle has never been so true.

This is...

..look at that.

Roll over! Roll over!

As if that wasn't enough...

How do I look?

..we're told to turn over.

On your backs! Start crawling.

Push off with your legs, come on!

Toughest thing I've ever done.

Ben is not letting us get away with anything.

Away we go. Come on.

Let's go, guys. Let's move.

-Urgh!

-It's getting more and more

difficult to keep going and we've only

been doing this for a matter of minutes.

Away we go. On your feet.

Start moving! Come on.

Come on, you two, let's go. Away we go!

On your feet! In we go!

Thankfully, we're called in.

That was incredibly tough.

That is hands down, one of the craziest experiences of my life.

I can't even speak!

Radz, this is gross but I actually

had mud in my ears for weeks after that.

-It was grim.

-I had it in there for months!

The lengths we go to for the BP badge

and of course one of the most sought

after BP badges is this, the orange badge,

which we award to Blue Peter competition winners and runners up.

My favourite competition ever on

Blue Peter was launched by none other,

by athletics legend, Dame Jessica Ennis Hill,

and para athletics legend, Richard Whitehead.

They came into the studio to launch our London 2017 mascot competition,

which was won by Eleanor.

This is Hero and Whizzbee.

They were turned into the actual mascots used at

the IFF World Athletics Championships

and the World Para Athletics Championships.

Didn't they look awesome?

And that right there, is what I call a competition.

They went global as well.

That was incredible.

Something you guys absolutely love

is a design competition and you did not

disappoint with our Design A Dragon competition last year.

It was amazing. And of course the winner was Florence.

Cannot wait to see her dragon

actually brought to life, the real thing,

on the Great Pagoda at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.

-Very cool.

-And speaking of design,

what about the Awesome Animations competition?

I didn't just think it was awesome, that's what it was called.

We asked you at home to invent and design a prehistoric creature,

which the awesome team at Aardman Animations

would actually turn into a genuine moving picture.

So many of you liked it,

you made it our most popular competition in six years,

over 9,000 of you applied.

-Well done.

-That is very cool, and of course, last but not least,

who could forget our Code Breaker competition -

Fit For Spy, Alex Rider.

Well, our winner, Alexander,

actually got to see his name written into Anthony Horowitz's latest book.

And on top of that, he got the spy experience of a lifetime.

Did you ever think for a second when you entered the competition,

that you'd be flying in a helicopter with me,

being filmed by the Blue Peter film team,

It goes to a point, yeah.

And that's the BT Tower just there.

You can see it sticking up just by where the Wheel is.

That's the London Eye just there, look.

What an end to the ultimate spy adventure.

No matter how many times I've seen orange badges

being earned on Blue Peter,

it still amazes me what entering a competition can do.

How cool was Alex?!

And of course that all came about

because he decided to enter a Blue Peter competition,

which means the next one could be you.

That's right and that's what Blue Peter is all about,

it's all about you lot at home.

Because we absolutely love receiving

your competition entries, your poems,

your posts, your pictures, your 3-D models, Purple Badge forms,

Sport Badge forms, we love it all.

And at the moment, in total, there's 172,000...

-How many?

-..172,000.

-Crazy!

-Yeah, of you have BP badges,

so we think it's a pretty cool club to be a part of.

And of that super special club

we only gave out several of the Blue Peter Gold Badges

to organisations and individuals and one of those

organisations was none other than the RAF Falcons.

They were the guys that instructed me in

the biggest ever, and best ever,

Blue Peter challenge that I've ever been a part of.

And also inspired so many Blue Peter presenters before me.

Such a special moment there.

And a very special person is mountaineer Molly Hughes.

She was the youngest woman ever,

to climb not one but both sides of Mount Everest,

and she even took the BP badge along with her.

-What a legend.

-And just take a look at how shocked and excited and

surprised, and chuffed,

Cressida Cowell is to get her Gold Badge,

of course, author of How To Train Your Dragon series.

So to celebrate our Gold Badge holders here on Blue Peter,

we created the Gold Badge Walk

in Salford and I got to add a very special person

that loads of you requested to see on your Purple Badge form.

-It was me?

-Ah.

-It was Mary Berry.

I'm at Henley Literary Festival,

to meet a lady who's inspired a new generation of bakers.

She's considered the Queen of Cakes,

and today she has no idea that I'm here, so wish me luck.

Mary, I'm here to surprise you a little bit.

Because you are so very special and so very loved and important to our

Blue Peter viewers and of course the essence of Blue Peter is making and

baking, so we'd like to award you

with your very own gold Blue Peter badge.

We had a very special Gold Badge moment this year

when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

joined us in the BP studio.

I think you guys have inspired so many people,

so many children across the country to be able to speak their minds,

but also to know that they're going

to be listened to and that that's OK.

We'd actually like to award you with our highest accolade, it is,

the Gold Blue Peter badge for your Royal Highnesses.

I got to go and I met loads of really cool people

-and it was the best thing ever.

Another amazing guest we had was JJ McPartland.

She came on and she absolutely smashed it.

You would not want to mess with her, would you?!

As well as that, do you remember David Walliams?

He came on and he answered viewers' questions

and he was very funny, might I add.

Well, it's very exciting.

I've never been in the studio before.

Have you not?! And you're wearing a Gold Badge.

Yes, I got a Gold Badge, which is very exciting.

Because there's only been about ten or so given out, is that right?

-Not many have been given out.

-Not quite, a few more than ten.

OK. When I got one it was ten.

They're obviously giving them out to anybody now!

I got this for swimming the Channel ten years ago.

-Indeed. Incredible.

-I was very excited.

It's one of my most prized possessions.

Radz, one I know you loved was Laurence Shahlaei,

one of the world's strongest men, came on.

But what an entrance, actually

pulling a bus of BP fans onto the piazza.

You can't top that.

Linds, I've got five guests, Triple H, Dean Ambrose, Becky Lynch,

Sasha Banks and I got to go in the car with Cesaro.

Cos I went, I'm not sure I mentioned this, WrestleMania, baby!

You have mentioned it, Radz. We know you love wrestling.

But we've also had, do you remember

the Warwick Castle team who came with actual horses

and I got to joust?

One of the best live shows ever.

I was not a natural on that horse, was I?

-You gave it the beans, Linds.

I did go for it. It's all about the BP badge.

Do you remember when we had

Dame Jacqueline Wilson as our first-ever guest editor

on the show and just to top that show off, we had Ali A,

from Ali A Supercharger,

doing the most phenomenal takeover

I think we've ever had in the BP studio

but, maybe the best guest ever, has to be, no, not you.

-Ah!

-Harry Hill when he came on as

the best quiz show host for our 59th birthday.

That was good, wasn't it?

was some of the great performances we've had.

Do you remember Flambe Circus?

-Yes!

-They came on.

They were amazing. But it was touch-and-go

-because it was so windy that day...

We didn't actually know if they'd be able to perform.

But they did and they nailed it.

-And what about the Soweto Skeleton Movers?

They were genuinely mind-boggling, and flexible.

And the music performances on BP have been amazing.

If I am just slightly out of position,
