That's right. We are celebrating the little OB, the orange badge, today.

And, of course, we give that to competition winners and runners-up.

We are indeed. We'll also be announcing the winner

and the top 30 entries of our Awesome Animation competition.

That's right. And we are launching a brand-new competition.

That's in just ten minutes' time.

Big clue - it's got something to do with these.

Ah. One thing we are also going to be doing is asking

you good people at home to spot her. Where is she hiding? Spot Shelley.

What we're going to do is take the calendar,

and rewind it back to before Christmas,

back to Sports Personality Of The Year,

which I went to with sport badge holder Chloe.

In 2017, over 5,000 of you applied for a Blue Peter sport badge.

And the lucky viewer who got the chance to join the judging panel

for Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2017 was Chloe.

That's the highest possible level and she's getting podium places.

And the judges decided that the three finalists

for this year's award would be...

..upcoming football superstar Phil Foden,

Paralympic skier Millie Knight

and gymnast Ellie Downie.

And to find out who will be crowned the winner, we've come to Liverpool

to go backstage at this year's Sports Personality Of The Year.

Chloe, we are officially behind the scenes

at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Next, it's the turn of some top music guests to rehearse,

so we dived backstage to catch up with two of the show's hosts -

Gabby Logan and Clare Balding - to find out just how much

they know about sport.

The World Egg Throwing Championships,

in which competitors have to throw an egg

as far as possible without breaking it,

was won by New Zealand.

But how far was their longest successful attempt?

What I'm thinking all the way through this is,

A - why aren't we covering it?

And B - what would I ask the winner?

What are our choices?

A - 18 metres, or B - 81 metres.

-Metres?

-Metres.

Metres? Oh, you can't throw 81 metres.

OK, you've both gone A.

-Yes.

You're both wrong. It's 80...

-I changed.

I saw her do that! Did you see her do that?

So, a sneaky win for Gabby - but we can't hang around.

Some of the biggest stars in sport are beginning to arrive

and we want to meet them on the red carpet.

Sports Personality is, I think, the cherry on top of the tree.

Obviously, we do what we do to compete at Olympics

and everything like that but to get recognised here and to be

amongst all these different people is just such a huge honour.

Ultimately, I've been fighting hard. It's been tough.

So to be nominated, I think the people who nominated me

looked at that and put me amongst these other good athletes.

So it's nice. It is good.

Our sport is so small and just to be

up for nomination is incredible. I can't describe it.

It's all about Bianca Walkden, man.

-She's right behind. You can't miss her.

Even Hero the Hedgehog,

the mascot designed by Blue Peter competition winner Ellie,

has come to say hello, and Chloe is dishing out some tough questions.

Was which one was more exciting to win -

Young Sports Personality or being a gold badge owner?

They're both such exclusive clubs.

I mean, how can you choose between them? But Blue Peter.

Which is harder - rowing or presenting?

Oh, presenting, definitely!

Presenting, you have to think on your feet, and rowing,

you just kind of get told what to do.

So I would much rather be sat in a boat. It's much less scary.

-Which person were you standing in as, Chloe?

-Yours truly.

Oh, great! Did you enjoy it? Can you do it for me tonight?

Yeah, yeah.

But that's enough chat.

and we've got gone and bagsied seats right at the front.

And that means we've got a great view as Phil Foden picks up

the award for Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2017.

He's got a bright future, that lad.

I feel very lucky to be part of a great team

and I'd just like to thank all the players, all the staff

and my mum and dad for making this possible.

there's only one thing left to do - announce the main award.

What an amazing night,

and it just goes to show where a Blue Peter sport badge can take you.

Forget about the Oscars.

For me, it's all about Sports Personality Of The Year.

Just three minutes to go

until we announce our brand-new competition,

because back in September, inspired by the film Early Man,

we asked you to design your very own nonhuman prehistoric character

which would then be animated

and brought to life by the amazing team at Aardman Animations.

Over 9,000 of you entered this competition,

which means it's the most popular competition we've had...

..for six years! Incredible. The judges...

I like that. Keep doing that, Linds.

The judges had to whittle them down to just 30 entries,

-including none other than Nick Park. Do you want to see the entries?

Here are the top 30 entries.

Let's walk this way. First up - ooh, if I can get down the stairs -

it's the six to eight category.

Now, these are so colourful.

They're absolutely incredible!

So much thought has gone into these designs.

One I want to point out is the Sabre-toothed Fuzz Ball -

I think you're meant to say it like that -

by the amazing Eve.

Now, he's only 30 centimetres high, apparently,

but he can eat an elephant. Eve, you are a legend.

I like your imagination.

And this one here is Amoss Slippery

and that is by Joseph.

Apparently he can stretch across paths,

rocks and walls to make a little slide.

These are beautiful, guys.

Let's take a look at the 9- to 11-year-old categories,

and I have to say when I was 9, 10 or 11, there is no way I'd have

made artwork anything like the stuff that you are seeing just there.

By the way, the colour, the vibrancy - everything -

is off the charts but I've got to draw your attention to Osbone,

which was made by Mimi.

Mimi has made a special magic wart on Osbone, which can make...

-It's tiny! Look at his little blue wart.

-Oh, there's the wart!

I haven't seen that all day.

I've got to also draw your attention to this one here,

Angry Etna by Jasmine.

Now, this is a volcanic tortoise which,

when furious, explodes scorching acid lava.

-Like our producer. Let's walk over to the 12 to 15 category.

-Yeah!

-Let's get a sideways happy dance.

-Have a look at this.

These are really incredible.

We've got felt tips, crayons - everything's been used on these.

Have a look at Clubby by Shira.

Clubby has a club growing out of his tail, obvs, for protection.

But unfortunately, when he wakes up,

he sometimes bumps himself on the head. Poor old Clubby.

And this is Billson by Grace.

Billson's actually two things -

it's twins, half plant, half bird -

and they disagree about almost everything. We like that.

We really do like that. In fact, we like it so much

that all the top 30 entries will get themselves an orange badge.

Now it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty,

the top entry in each of the age categories.

I love a snare drum roll because

in the six-to-eight-year-old category, the top entry is...

-..Iona!

She designed Monsieur Mollusc, as they say in Madrid.

A fish detective.

He can see everything as he has eyes on stalks

and tusks light up dark corners.

Iona, the judges loved the clever way you created

a clamp cellphone for Monsieur Mollusc.

That is so clever. OK, let's go on to the 9 to 11 category.

The top entry is...

It's Kate from Wiltshire!

She's created Fern, who is a very shy but adventurous creature,

and a mix of many different plants from the prehistoric times.

She has really done her research and the judges love Fern

because she has a lovely character.

She really does. It's amazing.

Linds, in the 12 to 15 category, the top entry...

I'm going to pull it myself...

Now, Rory created a Spiradon,

a cross between an anteater and a Stegosaurus.

It hides from many predators by turning into a flower shape,

by using its tail as a stalk.

Rory, the judges loved how it could transform into a flower shape.

-And that, my friends, gets a happy dance.

-That's right.

While he does that, I have no idea how the judges actually chose

one overall winner, but they did.

So it's time for the big reveal.

The winner of our Awesome Animation competition is...

-It's Rory!

Come on over, Rory, my friend. That is one big confident smile.

You should be very proud, because you've got yourself an orange badge.

How does that feel?

It feels amazing, and to win out of over 9,000 people is fantastic!

in Lindsey's hands are cue cards,

but in your hands are something very special. Tell us about it.

This is my model that Aardman made me

whilst I was away at their studios.

This is my creature that may just look like a very cool reptile

but, in fact, its tail can unwind.

-No way!

-The design is incredible.

This camouflages itself as a stalk

and the body rolls up into the head of a flower.

Yeah, these are, like, beautiful petals.

You actually are a bit of a pro yourself,

because you like stop-motion animation, don't you, Rory?

Yes, I do my own stop-motion animations at home.

In fact, Rory, I'm going to ask you to stop

as we look at one of those animations now.

Look at this here. This is magic.

They sent in pictures of hot-air balloons.

It's like they knew what our next competition was all about,

which is hot-air balloons. So, without further ado,

if you want to be like Rory here and get yourself an orange badge...

-..this is our Big Birthday Balloon Competition.

For Blue Peter's 40th anniversary,

a very special hot-air balloon was built.

It was 25 metres high and 18 metres wide -

big enough to wrap up a semi-detached house.

And then, on 6th July 1998, it was launched into the skies.

This year, Blue Peter turns 60,

and what does every good birthday party need?

Another birthday balloon, of course.

So, we're creating a brand-new Blue Peter hot-air balloon

for the biggest birthday celebration possible.

And helping us to do that is Simon Askey,

who actually flew the original BP balloon back in 1998.

-Hi, Simon. How are you doing?

-Hey, nice to meet you.

-This is the coolest interview space ever.

-Isn't it great?

We're actually inside a hot-air balloon. This is amazing.

So, tell me, why do you love hot-air balloons so much?

I was really lucky to have my first balloon flight

when I was just 14 years of age, and I ended up with it being my career.

They're fabulous, very colourful,

and you get to see the world from a different point of view.

I've actually never been up in one, so what does it feel like

to actually be in the basket in a hot-air balloon?

Well, to me, it's the closest I think Aladdin's ever been

to being on a magic carpet.

But there's only one way to really find out -

that's to take you for a balloon flight across Bristol.

-Do I get a ride today?

-Absolutely - that's why I'm here.

-Yes!

I'm so excited. Let's do it.

Ooh!

That is lovely.

This is a very smooth ride so far.

So, Lindsey, we're in the air. How does it feel to you?

I thought I'd feel quite nervous and quite scared being up here,

but what a view!

Hot-air balloons were invented over 200 years ago

and the first passengers to take to the skies were actually

a duck, a sheep and a cockerel,

way back in 1783.

Oh, we're going into the side of the trees!

Ooh, you can nearly touch it!

I touched it!

Yay, we touched a tree!

I'm about to fly a hot-air balloon for the first time. Ready?

They work by heating the air inside the balloon with the burner.

This air becomes lighter than the cooler air on the outside,

which makes the balloon float upwards.

So, basically, because heat rises, whenever I pull this...

..I'm putting a lot of heat into the top of the balloon

and that's going to make us go up.

And when the air is allowed to cool, the balloon begins to come down...

I think this might be quite bumpy.

..which catches the BP camera crew off-guard.

THEY MUTTER AND CHUCKLE

-Is everyone OK?

-Yeah. The camera's running! The camera's running.

Lindsey, are you all right?

Apart from the landing, my first flight has been

an incredible experience, and it's made me realise

how special our big birthday balloon is going to be.

But what will it look like?

Well, this is where it's going to be made, and this is the first design.

But, of course, this is only one side. Check it out,

because on the other side is where you come in.

We're giving you the chance to put your very own stamp

on our magnificent flying machine.

We want you to create a design to go on the iconic

Blue Peter galleon logo.

It needs to be totally unique,

and make sure it's colourful and bright.
