I have a question. What would you like from today's show? | 6:30:01 | 6:30:03
Like to see Lindsey and I race horse carriages? | 6:30:03 | 6:30:05
Would you like to know how to make your very own tin face tidy? | 6:30:05 | 6:30:08
I like that! Would you like to know how to make your very own comet? | 6:30:08 | 6:30:11
You would? I'm glad you said yes, cos it's all happening | 6:30:11 | 6:30:14
-on today's live Blue Peter. Here's a whooshy ship. -Wow! | 6:30:14 | 6:30:16
CHEERING | 6:30:31 | 6:30:33
We do like a cheer on cue. How are you? You're watching Blue Peter. | 6:30:36 | 6:30:39
-Hello. -Hello! Barney, are you here? -I'm here. -I'm definitely here. -Yes. | 6:30:39 | 6:30:42
-Somebody else who isn't. -Oh, yeah, um, Linda. -Er... | 6:30:42 | 6:30:45
-Louise? -Lily! -Lily! Lily's not here. Sorry, we're doing this, | 6:30:45 | 6:30:49
-because we know Lindsey's watching. Hi, Lindsey, miss you! -We do indeed. | 6:30:49 | 6:30:52
She's actually on an adventure and we get to see that very soon. | 6:30:52 | 6:30:55
At this part of the show, we say, "Welcome, here's what's coming up!" | 6:30:55 | 6:30:58
But, today, we don't know what's happening at the end of the show, | 6:30:58 | 6:31:01
because it's not just the producers in charge of what's happening. | 6:31:01 | 6:31:04
-Isn't that right? -Yes, the end of today's show is down to you! | 6:31:04 | 6:31:07
-You get to vote for... -Him as well! -You? -Yeah! -Good to see you, mate! | 6:31:07 | 6:31:11
So you get to vote for one of your three favourite films. | 6:31:11 | 6:31:13
They're also my favourite films. | 6:31:13 | 6:31:15
You get to see either myself and Lindsey singing with Pentatonix... | 6:31:15 | 6:31:18
# ..killed the radio star. # | 6:31:18 | 6:31:19
HARMONISING | 6:31:19 | 6:31:20
'..or the film where I blow a building up.' | 6:31:20 | 6:31:23
Yeah! | 6:31:23 | 6:31:25 | |
'Or maybe you'd like to see me train Ziggy the police dog again. | 6:31:25 | 6:31:28
'All you've got to do is get in touch.' | 6:31:28 | 6:31:29
Make your votes count and jump onto the Blue Peter website, which is... | 6:31:29 | 6:31:33
..and the film with the most votes, we'll play later on in the show. | 6:31:36 | 6:31:40
And while you're there - I got my own shot! Exciting! - | 6:31:40 | 6:31:42
why don't you leave a message about today's burning question? Radzi? | 6:31:42 | 6:31:45
If you could be in charge for the day, what would you do? | 6:31:45 | 6:31:48
You could be in charge of anything, the world, or the country, | 6:31:48 | 6:31:52
-or your school. If I was in charge, I'd be in charge of transport. -OK. | 6:31:52 | 6:31:55
I would get rid of all of it, so no cars, bikes, | 6:31:55 | 6:31:58
instead you've got to travel by jet. | 6:31:58 | 6:32:00
-I like that, but what about, instead of cars and bikes... -Yeah? | 6:32:00 | 6:32:03
..we change the land transport for hovercrafts? | 6:32:03 | 6:32:06
-Love what you're doing there. -Yes. | 6:32:06 | 6:32:07
Get in touch, usual details, Blue Peter website, | 6:32:07 | 6:32:10
and we'll try and read out as many of your comments later on. | 6:32:10 | 6:32:12
We know you love to get in touch. | 6:32:12 | 6:32:14
We have proof! Look at all the stuff you send us. | 6:32:14 | 6:32:16
It's an amazing thing to open the post at the start of the week | 6:32:16 | 6:32:18
and see how much you care about the things we talk about | 6:32:18 | 6:32:21
and, if we do a little slow-mo shot, | 6:32:21 | 6:32:22
you can probably see your shot just creeping in. Beautiful, thank you. | 6:32:22 | 6:32:26
-Barney, remember the hovercraft race we did last week? -I do. | 6:32:26 | 6:32:29
Tom from Hertfordshire captured that perfectly. Look at this picture! | 6:32:29 | 6:32:33
-That's you flying across the water, saying, "Weeee!" -Yeah. | 6:32:33 | 6:32:36
It was that fast. | 6:32:36 | 6:32:37
And there's me in the fence crashing out, going, "Hmmm!" | 6:32:37 | 6:32:40
And what's brilliant is that number seven is actually my lucky number | 6:32:40 | 6:32:43
and also the day of my birthday. I love it. | 6:32:43 | 6:32:45
Now, this here behind the big Blue Peter Badge wall | 6:32:45 | 6:32:48
has been sent in by Jamelia and it's actually the Channel Tunnel train. | 6:32:48 | 6:32:51
How cool is that? You've got windows there. And if you look inside, | 6:32:51 | 6:32:54
-you can see all the cars that are going over. -That's so good. | 6:32:54 | 6:32:57
So creative, all from recycled materials. | 6:32:57 | 6:32:59
Jamelia, not just the best name in the world, but so creative too. | 6:32:59 | 6:33:02
-Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to France. -Ha-ha! | 6:33:02 | 6:33:04
There was one picture I couldn't go without showing you, from Rebecca. | 6:33:04 | 6:33:08
She's 11 and she's made a Blue Peter board game. | 6:33:08 | 6:33:10
It says Start there, and if you look at box number seven, it says, | 6:33:10 | 6:33:13
"You've watched too much Blue Peter and forgotten to do your homework." | 6:33:13 | 6:33:17
Rebecca, I absolutely love that. | 6:33:17 | 6:33:19
Thank you to everyone who sent in anything in the post, | 6:33:19 | 6:33:21
whether it was on the big badge wall or not. | 6:33:21 | 6:33:24
Now, today is a very special day for any space scientists | 6:33:24 | 6:33:27
and, to explain more, is scientist Greg Foot with Barney. | 6:33:27 | 6:33:31
See, we like special effects to start an interview. | 6:33:33 | 6:33:35
Greg, always good to see you. | 6:33:35 | 6:33:37
I say that, it's not always good. Last time you were here, | 6:33:37 | 6:33:39
-you caused me a considerable discomfort. -Yeah, the chilli day. | 6:33:39 | 6:33:42
-Yeah, we're not doing that today? -No. -Talking about comets? -Yes. | 6:33:42 | 6:33:45
-Right, then. Why? -So, right now, 300 million miles away, | 6:33:45 | 6:33:49
-there's a spacecraft shooting through space. -Wow. | 6:33:49 | 6:33:52
It's called Rosetta and its mission is to track down | 6:33:52 | 6:33:55
a comet, a comet called 67P ChuryumovGerasimenko. | 6:33:55 | 6:33:59
-Got it. -Or just Comet CG. -That'll do for now. -Just call it that, OK. | 6:33:59 | 6:34:03
Its amazing mission, it's been going for ten years, | 6:34:03 | 6:34:05
it was launched ten years ago, it's been slingshotting | 6:34:05 | 6:34:08
around the Earth and Mars, out into space, | 6:34:08 | 6:34:11
with the idea of trying to land on top of this comet. | 6:34:11 | 6:34:14
So today is a very important day in that journey. | 6:34:14 | 6:34:16
ten years so far, but today marks a bit of a change for that journey? | 6:34:16 | 6:34:19
Yeah, if it kept going, it would just miss the comet completely. | 6:34:19 | 6:34:23
So today, they're doing a major rendezvous manoeuvre. | 6:34:23 | 6:34:26
-An MRM? Know it well. -Yeah. | 6:34:26 | 6:34:27
So they're going to change its route very slightly, | 6:34:27 | 6:34:29
so it can catch up with that comet and land on top. | 6:34:29 | 6:34:32
This isn't a comet travelling at a few miles an hour? | 6:34:32 | 6:34:34
These things are very, very fast? | 6:34:34 | 6:34:36
So Rosetta's going to have to match the speed, | 6:34:36 | 6:34:38
get alongside it or on top of it, and then land on the comet? | 6:34:38 | 6:34:40
-Mm-hm? -Why? | 6:34:40 | 6:34:42
It's amazing. It's an amazing mission. | 6:34:42 | 6:34:44
We've always been a little bit fearful of comets. | 6:34:44 | 6:34:47
For centuries, we've drawn pictures of us | 6:34:47 | 6:34:49
-cowering in front of these comets. -Yeah. | 6:34:49 | 6:34:51
Now we obviously know more about them, but we don't know everything. | 6:34:51 | 6:34:54
We don't know how old they are, we don't know where they came from. | 6:34:54 | 6:34:57
Do they come from inside the solar system? Outside the solar system? | 6:34:57 | 6:35:00
What we do know is that | 6:35:00 | 6:35:02
they're made of the same stuff as our early solar system. | 6:35:02 | 6:35:05
So, if we can land on top of it, work out what it's made of, then we | 6:35:05 | 6:35:08
may be able to unpick the origin, the evolution of the solar system. | 6:35:08 | 6:35:12
-It's a big event? -Really. -A big event in our history. | 6:35:12 | 6:35:14
You're going to try and recreate a comet? | 6:35:14 | 6:35:16
-You're going to try and make one from bits that are here? -I am. -OK. | 6:35:16 | 6:35:19
So half a comet is essentially water. So I'm going to pour some water in. | 6:35:19 | 6:35:22
This is what NASA do, by the way, kind of very similar. | 6:35:22 | 6:35:25
They actually make a model of a comet and do tests on it. | 6:35:25 | 6:35:28
So this is pretty accurate. | 6:35:28 | 6:35:29
Sort of like in a science lab when you do experiments on things? | 6:35:29 | 6:35:32
-This is the same thing, but trying to recreate a comet? -As you do. | 6:35:32 | 6:35:35
This is just soil, because the other half | 6:35:35 | 6:35:37
is pretty much organic material, | 6:35:37 | 6:35:38
dark organic material, like rock, rubble, that sort of thing. | 6:35:38 | 6:35:41
-Yeah. -There's lots of complex chemicals in a comet. | 6:35:41 | 6:35:45
-To represent that, I'm going to use soy sauce. -OK. -Of course. | 6:35:45 | 6:35:48
-There isn't soy sauce in a comet. -We're not going to eat it? -No. | 6:35:48 | 6:35:51
Definitely not. Especially when you see what I'm about to do to it. | 6:35:51 | 6:35:54
-So my complex chemicals. -Brilliant. | 6:35:54 | 6:35:56
-The next thing you need is some ammonia. -Yes. | 6:35:56 | 6:35:58
There's lots of ammonia in a comet. These are smelling salts. | 6:35:58 | 6:36:00
Yeah. Smelling salts are traditionally used | 6:36:00 | 6:36:03
to, um, to relieve the symptoms of a cold. | 6:36:03 | 6:36:05
It gets rid of the bogies in your nose. | 6:36:05 | 6:36:07
-But it smells very strong! -Yeah! -Very strong! | 6:36:07 | 6:36:09
-Also, when someone faints, it wakes them up! -It would! | 6:36:09 | 6:36:11
So that's all the ingredients. | 6:36:11 | 6:36:13
-The last ingredient is the dangerous one. -All right. -Put glasses on. | 6:36:13 | 6:36:16
I laugh in the face of danger. | 6:36:16 | 6:36:18
The last ingredient for a comet is frozen gas. | 6:36:18 | 6:36:21
Especially carbon dioxide. So I've got frozen carbon dioxide, | 6:36:21 | 6:36:24
it's called dry ice, so I'm going to pour this in here, | 6:36:24 | 6:36:27
-it's going to freeze everything up we've got in there. -Look at that! | 6:36:27 | 6:36:30
-Give it a huge stir as it's going. -It looks so cool! Ain't it wicked? | 6:36:30 | 6:36:34
You can see why they use it in sort of horror movies | 6:36:34 | 6:36:37
and Harry Potter and things like that? | 6:36:37 | 6:36:39
It looks so magical, doesn't it? | 6:36:39 | 6:36:40
-And this is just freezing what's inside effectively. -Yeah. | 6:36:40 | 6:36:43
We've got all the ingredients inside. Our comet will be ready very soon. | 6:36:43 | 6:36:46
OK, now, just in case you're wondering, | 6:36:46 | 6:36:48
you can't make this at home, it's too dangerous to make, | 6:36:48 | 6:36:50
but you can make your own version of a comet using edible stuff, | 6:36:50 | 6:36:54
like cookies and ice cream, so go to the Blue Peter website | 6:36:54 | 6:36:57
and you'll find a link on there | 6:36:57 | 6:36:59
and, when you taste it, it really is out of this world. | 6:36:59 | 6:37:03
Thank you very much. Thank you. | 6:37:03 | 6:37:05
So, our comet is almost ready. | 6:37:05 | 6:37:07
Let's establish the difference between | 6:37:07 | 6:37:09
asteroids, comets and meteorites. They're not all the same thing? | 6:37:09 | 6:37:12
No, they're all very subtly different. So this is a comet. | 6:37:12 | 6:37:14
It's a dusty snowball, or a snowy dustball, essentially. | 6:37:14 | 6:37:18
-Yeah. -Um, an asteroid is different. | 6:37:18 | 6:37:20
It's big, it's made of rock and metal, but it doesn't | 6:37:20 | 6:37:22
have a tail when it gets close to the sun, like this will have. | 6:37:22 | 6:37:26
-Also... -It's quite active in there, isn't it? | 6:37:26 | 6:37:28
-It's very active in there, in fact, making a bit of a mess. -I like that. | 6:37:28 | 6:37:31
That's what we like. And then you've got a meteoroid, | 6:37:31 | 6:37:33
which is like a smaller version of an asteroid, right? A meteoroid. | 6:37:33 | 6:37:37
-Yeah. -And then, if that goes down through our atmosphere and burns up, | 6:37:37 | 6:37:41
that's called a meteor. If it lands on the ground, a meteorite. | 6:37:41 | 6:37:44
I think I might leave that. I think this is probably pretty much done. | 6:37:44 | 6:37:47
-No TV presenters were hurt in the making of this comet. -Here it is. | 6:37:47 | 6:37:51
-So this is... -Wow! -..our comet. | 6:37:51 | 6:37:53
This is what's known as a nucleus, so this is the bit, the hard bit | 6:37:53 | 6:37:57
in the centre of a comet. It's normally ten miles across. | 6:37:57 | 6:38:01
-You can see it's warming up, so we're getting bubbles all over it. -So cool! | 6:38:01 | 6:38:04
-Now, if that gets even closer to the sun... -Here's the sun. | 6:38:04 | 6:38:08
As it gets closer, you get jets of gas | 6:38:08 | 6:38:11
-and dust flying off from deep inside. -That is amazing! | 6:38:11 | 6:38:14
That forms a big cloud around it, known as a coma, | 6:38:14 | 6:38:18
which can be up to 60,000 miles across, | 6:38:18 | 6:38:20
-which is like eight times the size of the Earth. -Incredible! -It's huge! | 6:38:20 | 6:38:23
As it gets even closer to the sun, | 6:38:23 | 6:38:25
that whole cloud of dust starts interacting | 6:38:25 | 6:38:27
with the sun's atmosphere and you get a big tail shooting out the back. | 6:38:27 | 6:38:31
-And that's why you picture a comet with a tail. -You can see why people | 6:38:31 | 6:38:34
would want to land on it and see what it's made of and learn more. | 6:38:34 | 6:38:36
But there is another day to look out for? | 6:38:36 | 6:38:38
-Yeah, there is. So the big rendezvous manoeuvre is today. -Yeah. | 6:38:38 | 6:38:42
Then, in August, it's going to catch up with the comet. | 6:38:42 | 6:38:45
And in November, it's going to try and land on top of the comet. | 6:38:45 | 6:38:48
Amazing. And an amazing demonstration too. | 6:38:48 | 6:38:50
A round of applause for Greg! Brilliant. | 6:38:50 | 6:38:52
-APPLAUSE AND CHEERING -Thank you so much for coming in. | 6:38:52 | 6:38:55
Aw! What a legend Greg is! | 6:38:55 | 6:38:58
Now, if you want to find out more about everything outer space related, | 6:38:58 | 6:39:01
go on to the Blue Peter website, where we are going | 6:39:01 | 6:39:04
to upload this evening the very first of Greg's vlogs. | 6:39:04 | 6:39:07
This week's all about planets, in fact. | 6:39:07 | 6:39:10
-How cool was that, by the way? -Cool? It's freezing! | 6:39:10 | 6:39:14
Hang on! That was the ice cream I was going to use to make my comet! | 6:39:14 | 6:39:17
Well, it's a bit like a comet. Look how fast it's going. | 6:39:17 | 6:39:20
-Unbelievable, Barney! -I think I've got brain freeze! | 6:39:20 | 6:39:22
Serves you right! | 6:39:22 | 6:39:23
-Anyway, if you saw last week's... -It really hurts! -I hope it does. | 6:39:25 | 6:39:28
..last week's show, you'd have seen Lindsey and I in a hovercraft... | 6:39:28 | 6:39:31
Barney and I in a hovercraft race war. | 6:39:31 | 6:39:33
This week, it's Lindsey and I going head-to-head | 6:39:33 | 6:39:36
and this has real horsepower. | 6:39:36 | 6:39:38
-Can someone rub my head, please? -Get me another spoon! -No, it's mine! | 6:39:38 | 6:39:42
APPLAUSE | 6:39:42 | 6:39:44
Welcome to the Royal Windsor Horse Show. | 6:39:44 | 6:39:46
A world-famous event where some of the best horses and riders come | 6:39:46 | 6:39:50
from all over the globe to display in front of thousands of spectators. | 6:39:50 | 6:39:54
'Crowds gather here in the grounds of Windsor Castle | 6:39:54 | 6:39:58
'to see a range of events. But one of the most popular | 6:39:58 | 6:40:01
'is the fast and furious sport of carriage driving.' | 6:40:01 | 6:40:04
It's pretty extreme! | 6:40:04 | 6:40:06
So you'll understand why we were more than a little bit surprised | 6:40:06 | 6:40:08
when we found out they were going to let us two amateurs have a go. | 6:40:08 | 6:40:11
Lucky for us, Blue Peter had set up a bit of training. | 6:40:11 | 6:40:14
'A month ago, we headed to Essex | 6:40:14 | 6:40:16
'to be put through our paces by top carriage driver Wilf Bowman-Ripley.' | 6:40:16 | 6:40:21
-Hi, Wilf. -Hi there. -How are you doing? | 6:40:21 | 6:40:23
-Good to meet you. -You as well. | 6:40:23 | 6:40:25
Now, where do we start with learning how to do this today? | 6:40:25 | 6:40:28
-We have Grace, who's one of our top juniors. -Hello. | 6:40:28 | 6:40:30
And she's going to demonstrate to you how it's done. | 6:40:30 | 6:40:33
'Carriage driving is all about precision. | 6:40:33 | 6:40:36
'Navigating through tight spaces as quickly as possible.' | 6:40:36 | 6:40:39
What happens if the drivers aren't too skilled? | 6:40:39 | 6:40:42
Well, you've got a very good instructor. | 6:40:42 | 6:40:44
LAUGHTER | 6:40:44 | 6:40:45
'But before we're allowed on a carriage, | 6:40:47 | 6:40:49
'Wilf wants to walk us through the basics.' | 6:40:49 | 6:40:51
If you want to turn left a little bit, you pull your left rein. | 6:40:51 | 6:40:54
And how hard do you have to pull? | 6:40:54 | 6:40:56
-How much do the horses respond to what you're doing? -You'll find out. | 6:40:56 | 6:40:59
It depends what the horses come out like. They're different every day. | 6:40:59 | 6:41:02
It depends what mood they got out of bed this morning. | 6:41:02 | 6:41:05
-I hope mine got up in a good mood. -Yeah. | 6:41:05 | 6:41:07
'This is beginning to sound a bit tricky. | 6:41:07 | 6:41:10
'And it looks a lot trickier when we see what we'll be in charge of.' | 6:41:10 | 6:41:13
Have you seen the size of those things, Linds? | 6:41:13 | 6:41:15
-I'm convinced this is a joke. -It's got to be a joke. | 6:41:15 | 6:41:18
What? | 6:41:18 | 6:41:20 | |
BOTH: Whoa! | 6:41:20 | 6:41:21
'These are big horses and big carriages. | 6:41:23 | 6:41:26
'There's only one way to find out if we're up to it. | 6:41:26 | 6:41:29
'I'm on Wilf's carriage. | 6:41:29 | 6:41:30
'And I'm being trained by Dan.' | 6:41:30 | 6:41:32
-Dan, it's the dream team. -This is the winning team. -Ooh! | 6:41:32 | 6:41:36
Hat on. Safety first. | 6:41:36 | 6:41:38
-This is the reins. -OK. | 6:41:38 | 6:41:40
-Oh, we're off. -We're off. -Given the reins, good. | 6:41:40 | 6:41:43
Ooh, where am I going? | 6:41:43 | 6:41:45
Trot on. | 6:41:45 | 6:41:46
'After a few minutes of driving, I'm beginning to get the hang of it, | 6:41:48 | 6:41:51
'which is more than can be said of Radzi.' | 6:41:51 | 6:41:54
Left, left! Easy, boy! | 6:41:54 | 6:41:56
'Now it's time to see how we're really getting on, | 6:41:59 | 6:42:02
'so Wilf wants us each to complete a timed lap of the course.' | 6:42:02 | 6:42:06
This is exquisite from Russell. | 6:42:08 | 6:42:11
Well done. Go on. | 6:42:11 | 6:42:13
'Right. My go.' | 6:42:14 | 6:42:17
There you go, boys. | 6:42:18 | 6:42:21
Oh! What's he doing? | 6:42:22 | 6:42:24
D'oh-argh! | 6:42:24 | 6:42:26
Ooh! Looks like you hit a cone there, Radzi. | 6:42:26 | 6:42:29
SHE GIGGLES | 6:42:29 | 6:42:30
So, Lindsey, your time was 2:49:59. | 6:42:30 | 6:42:34
And, Radzi, your time was 3:19:63. | 6:42:34 | 6:42:37
-No! -Yes! | 6:42:37 | 6:42:39
-We are the winners. -No way! -Fantastic result. | 6:42:39 | 6:42:41
-We were faster! -You were a minute over! | 6:42:41 | 6:42:43
Radzi, you demolished the course. | 6:42:43 | 6:42:45
'Back at Windsor, we're making our final preparations | 6:42:46 | 6:42:49
'before it's our turn to drive in front of thousands.' | 6:42:49 | 6:42:52
So, it's pretty fair to say I've got some work to do, | 6:42:53 | 6:42:56
but fortunately, I do have a fantastic trainer. | 6:42:56 | 6:42:58
Dan, do you think I can beat Lindsey? | 6:42:58 | 6:43:01
I think, if we do the basics correct, the speed will follow. | 6:43:01 | 6:43:04
-We've got a good chance. -Well, Lindsey, you heard it here. | 6:43:04 | 6:43:07
You may have smashed me in the practice, | 6:43:07 | 6:43:09
but it's all about the competition. | 6:43:09 | 6:43:10
Radzi, I don't think you've got a chance, mate. | 6:43:10 | 6:43:13
-You might have a big horse, but we have the skill, haven't we? -Yes. | 6:43:13 | 6:43:16
And how many people are watching us do this? | 6:43:16 | 6:43:18
There could be a couple of thousand people today. | 6:43:18 | 6:43:20
-That's quite a lot of people, isn't it... -A lot of people, yeah. | 6:43:20 | 6:43:23
-..to embarrass myself in front of. -THEY LAUGH | 6:43:23 | 6:43:26
Do you know what? I think we've got this. We're both competitive. | 6:43:26 | 6:43:29
-Exactly. -I think we'll smash it. Let's go. -Boom! -Go, team! | 6:43:29 | 6:43:32
'It's nearly time for us to have a go, Linds.' | 6:43:32 | 6:43:35
-Radz, -how you feeling? Um... | 6:43:35 | 6:43:37
I'm feeling like I'm about to do something that I'm unequipped to do, | 6:43:37 | 6:43:41
but I'm going to give it everything I've got to get around this course. | 6:43:41 | 6:43:44
You know, now that we're here, I'm genuinely scared. Are you? | 6:43:44 | 6:43:48
-Ooh-argh! -Ooh! | 6:43:48 | 6:43:50
That's, er... That's what they call good luck. | 6:43:50 | 6:43:52
'Yeah, looks like the horse is a bit nervous too, Radzi.' | 6:43:52 | 6:43:55
'We'll be attempting to drive our carriages through the water | 6:43:57 | 6:44:00
'and in and out of these obstacles. | 6:44:00 | 6:44:03
'The person with the quickest time wins.' | 6:44:03 | 6:44:05
Go for it. Go, Radzi! Go, Radzi! | 6:44:05 | 6:44:08
-Right, right, right, right. -Go right. -Go, go, go. | 6:44:10 | 6:44:13
He's gone the wrong way. I think Radzi's just gone the wrong way. | 6:44:13 | 6:44:16
I'm pretty sure. I don't know. | 6:44:16 | 6:44:17
But I'm sure you're meant to go through the water. | 6:44:17 | 6:44:19
Radzi's gone the long way round! Radzi's gone the long way round! | 6:44:19 | 6:44:23
'OK, not a great start, but maybe I can recover in the obstacles.' | 6:44:23 | 6:44:27
Left, left, left! | 6:44:27 | 6:44:28
'Oops! Wrong way again! | 6:44:30 | 6:44:33
'And again!' | 6:44:34 | 6:44:36
CHEERING | 6:44:36 | 6:44:37
Whoa! | 6:44:43 | 6:44:45 | |
-Good job. -Oh! | 6:44:45 | 6:44:47
Radzi, how was it? | 6:44:47 | 6:44:49
I forgot everything, Linds. We'll call it the scenic view. | 6:44:49 | 6:44:53
Only the cool cats take the scenic view, Linds! | 6:44:53 | 6:44:55
-Did you go the wrong way? -Oh, yeah. -Are we going? Oh, we're going. | 6:44:55 | 6:44:58
-Oh, no, this is it. -Good luck! -I don't want to do this any more! | 6:44:58 | 6:45:01
Oh, no, I do. Come on. | 6:45:01 | 6:45:02
OK, we're going to the right? | 6:45:02 | 6:45:04
Whoa! | 6:45:07 | 6:45:08 | |
Oh, ha-ha! Lindsey did it like I was supposed to do it! | 6:45:08 | 6:45:12
CHEERING | 6:45:12 | 6:45:14
'This really is a lot harder than it looks.' | 6:45:14 | 6:45:18
-CHEERING -Whoa! | 6:45:20 | 6:45:22
-Ah! -'Oh, dear! She's making this all look a bit easy.' | 6:45:26 | 6:45:31
Yey! That was so fun! | 6:45:31 | 6:45:35
Well done, horses! | 6:45:35 | 6:45:37
That was so fun! | 6:45:37 | 6:45:39
Laps completed, but how did we get on? | 6:45:42 | 6:45:45
Radzi, your time was 149.66 seconds. | 6:45:45 | 6:45:49
That has got winning written all over it. | 6:45:49 | 6:45:51
Lindsey's time was 101... | 6:45:51 | 6:45:53
-CHEERING -We won it! | 6:45:53 | 6:45:55
-Radzi, when it comes to you versus me... -Yes? | 6:45:55 | 6:45:59
..I think I remain unbeaten at this point. | 6:45:59 | 6:46:02
-Not strictly true, Lindsey. Stone skipping. -Less chat. | 6:46:02 | 6:46:05
-I came to win and we won, didn't we, Wilf? -We won. -Fair and square. | 6:46:05 | 6:46:08
Stone skipping doesn't quite count, | 6:46:12 | 6:46:14
which means that Lindsey is the rein-ing champion? | 6:46:14 | 6:46:17
You know, rein for the horse? No? OK, I've got another one. | 6:46:17 | 6:46:19
-She might not be the champion "furlong". -Ooh! | 6:46:19 | 6:46:23
Furlong, because of the... No? All right, hold your horses! | 6:46:23 | 6:46:25
Um, I'm just trying to "stirrup" some emotion? | 6:46:25 | 6:46:29
Yeah, can you send me some horse jokes? | 6:46:29 | 6:46:30
Apparently, I'm not very good at it. But now over to my neigh-bour. | 6:46:30 | 6:46:34
OK, I'm going home. Radzi, it's all yours. | 6:46:34 | 6:46:37
Less horseplay, Barney. It's time for some serious business. | 6:46:37 | 6:46:40
But first, take a look at this. | 6:46:40 | 6:46:42
'Have you ever had this problem? | 6:46:44 | 6:46:47
'Do you want to have a cleaner, tidier space to do your homework? | 6:46:47 | 6:46:51
'Then fear not! | 6:46:51 | 6:46:53
'We're going to show you how to make the tin face desk tidy | 6:46:53 | 6:46:57
'to solve all of your problems... | 6:46:57 | 6:46:59
'..and better still, it's made out of recycled materials!' | 6:47:00 | 6:47:04
Ha-ha! And to help us make that desk tidy, we have with us | 6:47:08 | 6:47:12
Thomas, Hayley, Owen and Kaylin! Give them a huge Blue Peter welcome! | 6:47:12 | 6:47:15
CHEERING Yes! | 6:47:15 | 6:47:17
Welcome to Blue Peter. | 6:47:17 | 6:47:19
Now, Hayley, I've seen a picture... that you guys made an eco-man. | 6:47:19 | 6:47:23
Can you tell us a little bit about that? | 6:47:23 | 6:47:25
Um, we outlined our caretaker on some card | 6:47:25 | 6:47:30
and he used some chicken wire and stapled it on. | 6:47:30 | 6:47:32
Here it is here. Look at that! | 6:47:32 | 6:47:35
Then we put some, um, recycle... | 6:47:35 | 6:47:37
Then we put recycle bins in every class | 6:47:37 | 6:47:39
and collected all the recycled waste and, um, | 6:47:39 | 6:47:42
put it in the recycle man until we filled him up. | 6:47:42 | 6:47:44
Well, it is fantastic and you guys are now proudly | 6:47:44 | 6:47:47
all wearing your green Blue Peter badges. I love that. | 6:47:47 | 6:47:49
What do we need in order to make this beautiful desk tidy? | 6:47:49 | 6:47:54
We use... | 6:47:54 | 6:47:56
We use a washed and used tin. | 6:47:56 | 6:47:59
So a washed and used tin, Thomas. Perfect. What about you, Hayley? | 6:47:59 | 6:48:02
-Some sticky back magnet tape. -Perfect. | 6:48:02 | 6:48:05
And for the decorations, Owen, what do we need? | 6:48:05 | 6:48:07
-Straw and buttons. -Perfect! And Kaylin? | 6:48:07 | 6:48:11
-Old stationery and ringpulls. -Absolutely. And just be a little | 6:48:11 | 6:48:14
bit careful with those ringpulls, cos sometimes, they can have sharp edges. | 6:48:14 | 6:48:18
All the details are on the website, which is... | 6:48:18 | 6:48:21
The perfect thing about it is you can use old bits and bobs lying around | 6:48:23 | 6:48:26
to help tidy up those old bits and bobs that are lying around. | 6:48:26 | 6:48:29
- Are we up for making this? - ALL: Yes. | 6:48:29 | 6:48:31
Let's get started, then! | 6:48:31 | 6:48:33
OK, the very first thing we do is take our clean used tin, | 6:48:33 | 6:48:36
as explained by Thomas, here. | 6:48:36 | 6:48:38
Now you can see just there there is a bit of a sharp edge. | 6:48:38 | 6:48:42
You might need to sand it down. | 6:48:42 | 6:48:43
Possibly ask an adult for help if you do so. | 6:48:43 | 6:48:45
Then we take our decoration. I'm going to go for a green button. | 6:48:45 | 6:48:50
Now, I'm going to measure this against our magnetic tape. | 6:48:50 | 6:48:54
Now this is slightly special magnetic tape. | 6:48:54 | 6:48:56
In fact, let me measure it first. | 6:48:56 | 6:48:59
Perfect, OK. So it's slightly special magnetic tape, because it is... | 6:48:59 | 6:49:03
It's got a plastic side which reveals a sticky side. | 6:49:03 | 6:49:08
Now, I was careful when I cut it, | 6:49:08 | 6:49:09
just to watch my fingers there as you peel that off. | 6:49:09 | 6:49:13
That is the sticky side right there. | 6:49:13 | 6:49:16
Now, this tape is actually found in craft shops, online, | 6:49:16 | 6:49:19
for a couple of pounds and it's well worth it. | 6:49:19 | 6:49:22
So this is really simple. You simply put your button there | 6:49:22 | 6:49:25
and it sticks to the tin due to the magnetic attraction. | 6:49:25 | 6:49:29
And I've got some prepared ones earlier. | 6:49:29 | 6:49:30
There's another button there. | 6:49:30 | 6:49:32
Now let's see if you can see what I'm going to be making here. | 6:49:32 | 6:49:35
There's a ring pull. Like I said, be careful when you take that off cans. | 6:49:35 | 6:49:38
We have a paperclip and another paperclip! | 6:49:38 | 6:49:43
It's a smiley face! | 6:49:43 | 6:49:44
OK, guys, what are you up to? Thomas, let's take a look at yours. | 6:49:44 | 6:49:47
-Um... -Can we have a look? | 6:49:47 | 6:49:49
Can you spin it around for me? | 6:49:49 | 6:49:51
-I'm making a smiley face. -Oh, there it is! | 6:49:51 | 6:49:54
That looks very sharp! I love the hair, by the way! Yes! | 6:49:54 | 6:49:57
-Hayley, what have you made? -Um... -Oh, what is that one? | 6:49:57 | 6:50:01
-A pig with pigtails. -A pig with...! | 6:50:01 | 6:50:04
-A pig with pigtails? -Yeah. -I love what you've done there, Hayley! Yes! | 6:50:04 | 6:50:08
And Owen, what about yourself? What have you made? | 6:50:08 | 6:50:11
-I've made... -(Show that camera there.) | 6:50:11 | 6:50:13
I've made a freaky looking monster with funky little sideburns. | 6:50:13 | 6:50:17
It is very freaky! Kaylin, what about yourself? | 6:50:17 | 6:50:19
I've made sparkly hair and a happy face. | 6:50:19 | 6:50:24
I really like the creativity here. And that's the beauty about this. | 6:50:24 | 6:50:27
You can be as creative as you want. It doesn't have to be a face, | 6:50:27 | 6:50:30
but here's a little idea. Take a look at this here. | 6:50:30 | 6:50:32
So we have smiley face, only you get too much homework | 6:50:32 | 6:50:35
and you're a bit grumpy, there's a grumpy face! | 6:50:35 | 6:50:38
Thank you so much for helping us out. | 6:50:38 | 6:50:39
-Fantastic job. Barney, what do you reckon? -I love it, Radzi! | 6:50:39 | 6:50:42
A classic example of a Blue Peter make - upcycling, it's dead easy, | 6:50:42 | 6:50:45
everybody can get involved and you can create your own smiley faces. | 6:50:45 | 6:50:48
Why not give it a go yourself? | 6:50:48 | 6:50:49
If you do, take a picture and send it to us. | 6:50:49 | 6:50:51
We love hearing from you. It might even make it | 6:50:51 | 6:50:53
into the Makes And Bakes gallery on our Blue Peter website. | 6:50:53 | 6:50:56
Earlier, we asked you to get in touch and say which film | 6:50:56 | 6:50:58
you would like to see at the end of the show. That time is now. | 6:50:58 | 6:51:00
The votes have been counted, so the votes are officially closed. | 6:51:00 | 6:51:04
I didn't do my own sound effect then, but that would've been cool. | 6:51:04 | 6:51:07
So, you had three films to choose from. | 6:51:07 | 6:51:09
When Lindsey and myself sang with Pentatonix. | 6:51:09 | 6:51:11
There was the film where I blew a building up. And, of course, | 6:51:11 | 6:51:14
the film where I got to train Ziggy the police dog. | 6:51:14 | 6:51:16
So, I can now reveal the winning film is... | 6:51:16 | 6:51:19
FANFARE PLAYS | 6:51:19 | 6:51:22
Cost a fortune that. The winning film is | 6:51:23 | 6:51:25
Ziggy the police dog and Barney training him. | 6:51:25 | 6:51:28
It's quite a comedy. Have a look. Enjoy. | 6:51:28 | 6:51:30
DOGS BARK | 6:51:32 | 6:51:33
'Police dogs are an important part of the police force, | 6:51:33 | 6:51:35
'from helping to catch criminals to finding illegal and dangerous items. | 6:51:35 | 6:51:39
'They work on the front line.' | 6:51:39 | 6:51:41
Good boy. This is Banjo. He's one of the many police dogs | 6:51:43 | 6:51:46
that are used by the Greater Manchester Police | 6:51:46 | 6:51:48
and I'm here to find out how they're used | 6:51:48 | 6:51:50
and, in true Blue Peter style, I've been given a very special challenge. | 6:51:50 | 6:51:54
He likes cameras, by the way. In just a week's time, I'm going | 6:51:54 | 6:51:57
to be working with the police at Manchester Airport. | 6:51:57 | 6:51:59
Now, this is very serious. This is real police work. | 6:51:59 | 6:52:02
I've got to learn fast and know exactly what I'm doing. | 6:52:02 | 6:52:04
Constable Harwood and Banjo, reporting for duty. | 6:52:04 | 6:52:07
Eh? Oh, wrong arm. | 6:52:07 | 6:52:09
Sorry. | 6:52:09 | 6:52:10
'I'm here at Hough End in Charlton to meet officer Rob Carlin | 6:52:10 | 6:52:15
'and his dog Colin.' | 6:52:15 | 6:52:17
I was expecting to see a German shepherd, but he's a spaniel. | 6:52:17 | 6:52:20
He is, he's a springer spaniel. We don't just use German shepherds. | 6:52:20 | 6:52:23
We use, um, spaniels and Labradors and cocker spaniels, | 6:52:23 | 6:52:27
springer spaniels for searching. | 6:52:27 | 6:52:29
Any dog that's got a high play drive, that really wants to please you | 6:52:29 | 6:52:32
and do the job we can use, but with the spaniels and the labs, | 6:52:32 | 6:52:37
-their noses are very good. -When you say a high play drive, | 6:52:37 | 6:52:40
you mean it's kind of play and reward? So, even though | 6:52:40 | 6:52:42
-they're working dogs, they think it's a bit of fun? -They do. | 6:52:42 | 6:52:45
It's all play-based training, so, er, with the search dogs, | 6:52:45 | 6:52:47
they basically think they're looking for a tennis ball | 6:52:47 | 6:52:50
and the end result is they get a tennis ball. | 6:52:50 | 6:52:52
What do you use Colin for? What kind of dog is he? | 6:52:52 | 6:52:54
Colin's trained to find explosives. | 6:52:54 | 6:52:56
There are several different types of explosives. | 6:52:56 | 6:52:59
And Colin's trained to find those. | 6:52:59 | 6:53:01
'So, Rob and Colin are going to give me | 6:53:03 | 6:53:04
'a demonstration of what I need to learn. | 6:53:04 | 6:53:07
'Hidden in this function room | 6:53:08 | 6:53:09
'are a small amount of explosives for Colin to find.' | 6:53:09 | 6:53:12
You can see Colin's wearing a harness now. | 6:53:14 | 6:53:16
Um, this is a trigger for the dog, so that he knows he's searching. | 6:53:16 | 6:53:19
Stay. | 6:53:19 | 6:53:21 | |
-He's a good boy. -Sit. | 6:53:21 | 6:53:23
Go find. | 6:53:23 | 6:53:24
So I'm watching the dog now. | 6:53:27 | 6:53:28
You've got to keep your eye on the dog at all times, | 6:53:28 | 6:53:30
cos he might do something that I need to recognise, | 6:53:30 | 6:53:33
that he may have got into a scent pattern. | 6:53:33 | 6:53:35
How do you know he found something? What does Colin do to tell you that? | 6:53:37 | 6:53:40
He'll get to the source of the smell and he'll just stop. | 6:53:40 | 6:53:44
-This is safe now. We know this is OK. -OK. | 6:53:44 | 6:53:46
-This has been searched. -Yeah. -So we'll move down now. | 6:53:46 | 6:53:48
-He likes that area. -You can see now, he's getting very interested there. | 6:53:50 | 6:53:53
See, Colin has now stopped. He's now waiting for his tennis ball. | 6:53:53 | 6:53:56
-Good boy! -'That's Colin's reward. So let's see what he's found.' | 6:53:58 | 6:54:01
-Just behind the step there. -Yeah? -You can see there's a pot. -Oh, yeah. | 6:54:01 | 6:54:05
Pick that up. Just inside the pot there, you've got plastic explosives. | 6:54:05 | 6:54:11
'In the canister, the explosives are perfectly safe, | 6:54:11 | 6:54:13
'but in the wrong hands could be very dangerous.' | 6:54:13 | 6:54:16
Right, so he did the job? He found it. | 6:54:16 | 6:54:18
-I've now got to try and do that with my own dog? -Yes, that's right. | 6:54:18 | 6:54:22
-So, say hello to Ziggy. -Yeah. -Ziggy is my search dog. -He is. | 6:54:22 | 6:54:25
This is Ziggy, he's a new dog, he's only seven months old now. | 6:54:25 | 6:54:28
So he has done a little bit, but not a great deal. | 6:54:28 | 6:54:31
So we're both in training? | 6:54:31 | 6:54:32
-That's right, so it's over to you now. -It's me and you, Ziggy. | 6:54:32 | 6:54:35
-See if you can, er, find it. -OK. | 6:54:35 | 6:54:37
Find. | 6:54:37 | 6:54:39 | |
-Ziggy! -BARNEY CLAPS | 6:54:40 | 6:54:43
This way. Ziggy? | 6:54:43 | 6:54:45
Here, boy! | 6:54:45 | 6:54:47
Ziggy! | 6:54:47 | 6:54:48
Ziggy? 'Er, I don't think he's listening!' | 6:54:48 | 6:54:51
-Give him the command to find again. -Like that? | 6:54:53 | 6:54:56
He's very excited about something here, isn't he? | 6:54:57 | 6:55:00
-He is, yes, so leave him with it now. -OK. | 6:55:00 | 6:55:02
There you go. That's the dog's indication. | 6:55:02 | 6:55:04
He's gone into the sit, so we reward Ziggy a bit more quickly, | 6:55:04 | 6:55:07
-because he's a young dog. -OK. -Brilliant, well done. -Good boy! | 6:55:07 | 6:55:09
-That was brilliant. -That's it, well done. -First timer as well! | 6:55:09 | 6:55:12
You know, you got better and better as the search went on, | 6:55:12 | 6:55:15
because, initially, you were perhaps too close to the dog. | 6:55:15 | 6:55:17
-OK. -And at one point, he was behind you. -Did we find anything? | 6:55:17 | 6:55:20
I mean, Ziggy's knows that he's found something. | 6:55:20 | 6:55:23
-'It's more plastic explosives.' -So he did really well. | 6:55:23 | 6:55:26
-There you have it. -And so did you. -Thank you very much. | 6:55:26 | 6:55:28
-That was brilliant! -No problem, well done. -Do I get a tennis ball now? | 6:55:28 | 6:55:32
BARKING | 6:55:32 | 6:55:34
'Today is the day for my challenge at Manchester Airport. | 6:55:34 | 6:55:37
'It's time for Ziggy and I | 6:55:37 | 6:55:39
'to work as a team in a special training exercise.' | 6:55:39 | 6:55:42
The front pocket is the most important | 6:55:43 | 6:55:46
part of any police officer who works with a dog's uniform, | 6:55:46 | 6:55:49
and you'll see it says there on the side - | 6:55:49 | 6:55:51
"scoop the poop", so be prepared. | 6:55:51 | 6:55:55
'But now, things are about to get serious. | 6:55:55 | 6:55:57
'Rob has hidden a small amount of explosive somewhere | 6:55:57 | 6:56:00
'in the busy airport and it's down to me and Ziggy to find them.' | 6:56:00 | 6:56:04
Search! | 6:56:04 | 6:56:05
'We're off to an enthusiastic start.' Ziggy! Ziggy! | 6:56:07 | 6:56:10
'But still no sign.' Yeah. | 6:56:13 | 6:56:15
'At least Ziggy's listening to me. | 6:56:15 | 6:56:18
'And, as he comes to a stop, | 6:56:18 | 6:56:20
'it looks like Ziggy has discovered something.' | 6:56:20 | 6:56:23
If that... If that's not a definite point, I don't know what is. | 6:56:23 | 6:56:26
Good boy! | 6:56:26 | 6:56:27
Well done! Yes! | 6:56:27 | 6:56:29
So, let's just have a quick look. | 6:56:29 | 6:56:32
-Wow! -I think we can officially say you've passed the test. | 6:56:32 | 6:56:35
Such a great experience to actually be here with Ziggy, | 6:56:37 | 6:56:39
for him to show me the ropes in the airport and it's really quite weird, | 6:56:39 | 6:56:43
though, how dogs are sort of led by their sense of smell. | 6:56:43 | 6:56:45
I'm actually the same with sausages. If anybody gets... | 6:56:45 | 6:56:48
HE SNIFFS | 6:56:48 | 6:56:50
I ate all of them as well. It was such good fun. | 6:56:51 | 6:56:53
Thank you to Rob and Colin for showing me | 6:56:53 | 6:56:55
and the star of the show is Ziggy. | 6:56:55 | 6:56:56
And you for getting in touch and voting for your favourite. | 6:56:56 | 6:56:59
You've not just voted for your favourite show, | 6:56:59 | 6:57:01
but sending e-mails about what you'd do if you were in charge. | 6:57:01 | 6:57:03
Sunstone Chirpy Princess says, "I'd be in charge of the weather, | 6:57:03 | 6:57:07
"so it could be sunny everyday." That's a nice one. | 6:57:07 | 6:57:09
Emerald Terrible Gadget has made a comment | 6:57:09 | 6:57:11
which is possibly my favourite of all time. | 6:57:11 | 6:57:13
It says, "I'd make Radzi King and Barney be his servant." | 6:57:13 | 6:57:16
-Yes! -Yeah, that's pretty much true anyway. | 6:57:16 | 6:57:18
Ruby Giggly Millipede - "I'd be in charge of CBBC | 6:57:18 | 6:57:21
"and put on back-to-back episodes of Blue Peter and The Next Step | 6:57:21 | 6:57:24
"on all day." Beautiful choices. Thanks for getting in touch. | 6:57:24 | 6:57:26
