Pffffff! | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
Wish I'd caught something. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
Oh, hello! I'm David. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
I was saying, I wish I'd caught something when I was fishing today. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
Wouldn't have minded what I caught. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
A welly boot would've been useful. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:25
It rains a lot this time of year and I've lost a welly, look at that. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
A bicycle might have been a bit big, but I could do with a new bicycle. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:35
The girl in tonight's story likes fishing, | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
and she likes wishing too. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
Let's find out what she wishes for. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
The story is by Stephen Mackey and it's called Miki. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
A long time ago and very far away, | 0:16:46 | 0:16:51
there was a place that was always cold and dark. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
Nothing grew in this icy world. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
"I wish we could find just a little tree", said Miki to Penguin. | 0:16:56 | 0:17:01
At once, a little tree sprang up in front of them, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
but the tree looked lonely and bare. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
Miki and Penguin took it home. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
"I wish we had some pretty lights", said Miki. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
A string of fairy lights suddenly appeared! | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
Miki draped them over the little tree. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
"If only we could make them twinkle", she said. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
The very next moment, a twinkle machine appeared. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
Penguin climbed aboard and pedalled faster and faster. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
The little lights began to glitter, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
throwing sparkly beams over the snow. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
But soon, Penguin's feet were tired and sore. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:40
The pretty lights faded. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
"We need someone stronger", he sighed. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
Miki and Penguin jumped. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Polar Bear appeared from nowhere. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
He was the strongest creature in the land, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
and beside him was a windmill. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
Polar Bear huffed and puffed and the little lights shone bright. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
But even the strongest creature can run out of breath. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:06
Soon, the friends were in darkness again. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
"I wish...", | 0:18:09 | 0:18:10
said Miki, as she fished for supper. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
"..I could catch a star. A star would shine forever." | 0:18:13 | 0:18:18
Suddenly, there was a big tug on her rod... | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
-SPLASH -..and Miki was gone. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
"Help", called Penguin. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
Polar Bear looked into the fishing hole. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
Miki was nowhere to be seen. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
But down in the deep blue ocean, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
Miki was safe in the magic of Midwinter Eve. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:37
A gentle giant was taking her on a journey. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
She gazed with awe at the strange, wonderful creatures. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:46
There were sea urchins, eels and... | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
jellyfish. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
"Oh, dear", cried Miki. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
But he only wanted to show them the way. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
He waved his tingly-tangly tentacles. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
"We're here", said the gentle giant. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
Miki dreamily floated down until she reached the ocean floor. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:08
Back on the ice, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:10
Polar Bear bravely decided to dive down to search for Miki. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
Down, down he went, | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
but there was no sign of his little friend. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
On the ocean floor, Miki had fallen asleep, | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
safely snuggled inside a sea flower. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
She was awoken by a gentle tickle. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
A tiny octopus danced in front of her. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
"Come with me", he said. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
Miki parted the petals. A wonderful sight met her eyes. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:41
In front of her were 100 twinkling stars. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
Back on the ice, | 0:19:47 | 0:19:49
Polar Bear popped back through the hole. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
"No sign of her", he sighed. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
"I wish I could dive down", said Penguin. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
At once, Penguin found himself dressed | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
in a little penguin diving suit. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
"Lower me down, Polar Bear", he cried. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
Down he went. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
All the time he looked about, calling out for his friend. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
But his voice was too small to hear. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
Penguin had never been so deep in the sea before. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
The watery world was full of strange and fearsome creatures. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:23
"Pull me up, Polar Bear", he cried. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
Polar Bear hauled him up, just in time. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
"No sign of her", said Penguin sadly. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
"But we must never give up". | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
At the bottom of the ocean, the magic was wearing thin. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
Miki knew it was time to go home. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
The tiny octopus took her to his mother. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:46
Polar Bear was getting ready to search again, when... | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
there was a rumble, a splinter...and a crack! | 0:20:49 | 0:20:54
CRACK | 0:20:54 | 0:20:55 | |
The little fishing hole was opening up, bigger... | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
and bigger. The ice started to move beneath their feet | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
and the ground heaved and...shattered! | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
And the biggest creature the friends had ever seen | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
shot out of the fishing hole. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
There, nestled safely in its long arms, was Miki - | 0:21:12 | 0:21:18
just in time. It was nearly midnight and the magic was running out. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:22
And in Miki's pocket was a sparkling star - | 0:21:22 | 0:21:27
a star that would shine forever. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
On Midwinter Eve When the icy wind blew | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
The moon weaved her magic And wishes came true | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
The little star shone For all it was worth | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
And spread Midwinter light All over the Earth. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:47
And that story was called Miki. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
Oh, oh... Oh! | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
Look... I've caught a shining star. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
A star that can shine all night long, | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
while you sleep and have lovely dreams of polar bears and penguins | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
and octopi. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
I'll see you soon for another story. Night-night. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
Now, what else could I catch? | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
Hmm, I wish, I wish I can catch the moon. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:16
