CBeebies Bedtime Story. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
Hello, I'm Lisa. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
I've just got a present from a very good friend | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
and I can't wait to open it. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
I love receiving presents, don't you? | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
Tonight's bedtime story is all about one of the best presents ever. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:23
Would you like to hear it? | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Wonderful. This story is called The Best Gift Of All, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:30
by Jonathan Emmett and Vanessa Cabban. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
"Hop-diggity-drat," | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
said Mole, poking his head out of the ground one morning. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:41
"It's raining again." | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Mole did not like going out in the rain. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
"The only place to be in this weather is underground," he decided. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:51
But it had been raining ALL week | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
and Mole was missing his friends, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
especially Rabbit. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Mole hadn't seen her for days | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
and he was beginning to worry about her. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
"Dear Rabbit," sighed Mole. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
"It would be SO nice to see her." | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
And, then, Mole had a wonderful idea. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
"I don't need to go out in the rain to see Rabbit," Mole told himself. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
"I can visit her by tunnel." | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
And he began to dig. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Squirrel had been collecting nuts beneath the shelter of the trees | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
and was about to bury them. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Squirrel dropped the nuts into a hole and then jumped back | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
in surprise as, "Ouch, ouch, ouch!" | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
cried a voice from below. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
Squirrel peered down the hole | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
and was astonished to see Mole peering back up at her. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
"Mole," said Squirrel. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
"What are you doing at the bottom of my hole?" | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
"Squirrel!" laughed Mole. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
"What are you doing at the top of my tunnel?" | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Mole explained that he was going to see Rabbit. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
"What a smashing idea," said Squirrel. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
"Can I come too?" | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Hedgehog had found a heap of dry leaves and had just | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
settled down for a nap when he felt something scrape his backside. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
"What the weevil?" cried Hedgehog, jumping up again. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
"Sorry, Hedgehog," said Mole, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
appearing out of the ground. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
"I came up to find a way around these roots." | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
"We're off to see Rabbit," cried Squirrel, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
popping her head out of the tunnel. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
"We haven't seen her for days," said Mole. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
"What a splendid idea," said Hedgehog. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
"Can I come too?" | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
It was dark in the tunnel | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and neither Squirrel nor Hedgehog was used to being underground. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
All they could do was follow Mole. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
"How can you tell where we are?" asked Squirrel. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
"Are you sure we're going the right way?" asked Hedgehog. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
"Don't worry," Mole assured them, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
"if there's one thing I'm good at, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
"it's digging tunnels." | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Rabbit lay in her burrow feeling miserable. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
She had a terrible cold | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
and was staying inside until the weather got better. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
But it had been raining all week | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
and she was missing her friends, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
especially Mole. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
She was worried they might have forgotten her. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
"It's so lonely, stuck here on my own," she thought. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
"It would be lovely if someone dropped in to see me." | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
Just then, there was a scrabbling sound | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
and a lump of earth fell from the burrow ceiling. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
And before Rabbit could take a closer look, there was | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
a shower of soil and Mole, Hedgehog | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
and Squirrel dropped one after the other onto the burrow floor. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
"Mole! Squirrel! Hedgehog!" | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
smiled Rabbit. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
"I was just thinking how much I missed you." | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
When Mole, Squirrel and Hedgehog realised that Rabbit was poorly, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
they couldn't stop fussing over her. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Squirrel went back down the tunnel | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
and brought Rabbit some of her nuts to eat, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
and Hedgehog fetched some of his dry leaves to make a fresh bed. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
And it wasn't long before Rabbit was feeling better and chatting happily. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:32
Only Mole looked unhappy. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
"What's wrong, Mole?" Rabbit asked. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
"Everyone has brought something to make you feel better," | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
explained Mole, "except me, and I've missed you most." | 0:04:42 | 0:04:48
"Oh, Mole," said Squirrel. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
"You shouldn't feel bad. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
"After all, it was your idea to visit Rabbit." | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
"And we would never have got here," agreed Hedgehog, | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
"without your tunnel." | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
"And you did bring me something, or someone," said Rabbit. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:11
Mole grinned when he realised what Rabbit meant. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
"I brought you your friends," he said. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
"Yes," said Rabbit, | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
"you brought me my friends | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
"and that's the best gift of all." | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
That story was called The Best Gift Of All. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Did you enjoy it? | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
It's getting late so I'm going to open my present in the morning, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
but I really hope my gift is as good as Rabbit's. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:41
Now, it's time for me to snuggle down and dream of moles, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
squirrels and other furry friends. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Why don't you do the same? | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
Night-night. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51 |
