CBeebies bedtime story.

0:22:020:22:05

So, I need to make sure that I close the curtains, turn off the lights...

0:22:070:22:12

Oh, hello. I'm Mackenzie.

0:22:130:22:15

I'm just making a list of things to remember before I go to bed.

0:22:150:22:19

Owl, Mouse and Rabbit, in tonight's bedtime story,

0:22:190:22:23

have a list that they put together at their very important meeting,

0:22:230:22:28

so I thought I should have one too.

0:22:280:22:30

The story is by Claire Freedman and Russell Julian

0:22:300:22:33

and is called Tappity-Tap! What Was That?

0:22:330:22:36

Deep in the woods, Owl, Mouse and Rabbit

0:22:370:22:40

were having a very important meeting.

0:22:400:22:43

"This is a very important meeting," said Owl,

0:22:430:22:46

"we need to do something about the monster of the woods."

0:22:460:22:50

"I'm scared!" cried Rabbit.

0:22:500:22:52

"No-one's safe while it's around!" squeaked Mouse,

0:22:520:22:54

"I've heard he's big and horribly hairy."

0:22:540:22:58

"And very scary," trembled Rabbit.

0:22:580:23:01

"Don't panic!" said Owl, handing round notes he'd written.

0:23:010:23:05

"I'm sure we've nothing to worry about,

0:23:050:23:08

"but just in case I have a plan."

0:23:080:23:10

"What to do if the monster of the woods

0:23:100:23:12

"comes calling on a dark, stormy night. Number one, lock the door.

0:23:120:23:17

"Number two, pull the curtains shut.

0:23:170:23:20

"Number three, pretend you're not at home.

0:23:200:23:23

"Remember," said Owl, "the monster probably won't call at all."

0:23:230:23:28

"He will if it's dark and stormy," shivered Rabbit.

0:23:280:23:31

"And if he's hungry," added Mouse.

0:23:310:23:33

"Don't worry," said Owl, "if we follow my plan we'll be safe."

0:23:330:23:37

That night it was dark and it was stormy.

0:23:370:23:42

Owl woke up with a start.

0:23:420:23:44

CRASH! BANG! CRASH!

0:23:440:23:46

"It's only the thunder," he thought.

0:23:460:23:48

HOWL! HOWL! HOWL!

0:23:480:23:52

"It's only the wind," he told himself.

0:23:520:23:54

TAPPITY-TAP!

0:23:540:23:56

What was that?

0:23:570:23:59

Quick as he could Owl locked the door,

0:23:590:24:02

pulled the curtains shut and pretended he was not at home.

0:24:020:24:06

"Let me in," called Rabbit,

0:24:060:24:08

"I thought I heard the monster and I'm drenched!"

0:24:080:24:11

"Come in," said Owl, "it's only a nasty, noisy storm."

0:24:110:24:15

Rabbit scurried inside.

0:24:150:24:17

TAPPITY-TAP!

0:24:170:24:18

What was that?

0:24:190:24:21

"Quick," cried Owl, "the plan!"

0:24:210:24:23

They locked the door, shut the curtain and pretended to be out.

0:24:230:24:27

"Let me in," called Mouse, "I thought I heard the monster, I'm freezing."

0:24:270:24:32

"Come in, Mouse," said Owl, "it's only a noisy, nasty storm."

0:24:320:24:37

Mouse curled up by the fire, Owl made some nice, hot cocoa.

0:24:370:24:41

"See," he said, "we're all safe now."

0:24:410:24:45

TAPPITY-TAP-TAP!

0:24:450:24:46

What was that?

0:24:460:24:47

Rabbit dropped his mug in fright.

0:24:470:24:50

"Is that the Mouse knocking on the front door?" he whispered.

0:24:500:24:54

"I'm already here, silly," Mouse squeaked.

0:24:540:24:57

"Is it Owl, then?" Rabbit gulped.

0:24:570:24:59

"I'm here too," Owl cried.

0:24:590:25:01

They looked at each other.

0:25:010:25:03

"Oh no," they whispered together, "it must be...

0:25:030:25:07

"THE MONSTER OF THE WOODS!"

0:25:070:25:08

"Stay calm," shouted Owl, "remember my plan."

0:25:080:25:12

So they locked the door,

0:25:120:25:13

pulled the curtain shut and pretended they were not at home.

0:25:130:25:18

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

0:25:180:25:20

The banging got louder and louder.

0:25:200:25:23

Sniffle, snuffle, squeak.

0:25:230:25:26

"That doesn't sound like a monster," frowned Rabbit, forgetting to hide.

0:25:260:25:31

"Sounds like crying," said Mouse, nervously opening the curtains.

0:25:310:25:35

"Whoever it is sounds frightened," agreed Owl, "maybe they need help."

0:25:350:25:40

He peeped through the peep-hole. Slowly Owl unlocked the door.

0:25:400:25:45

THUNDER

0:25:450:25:47

A tiny, bedraggled, furry...thing stood on the doorstep.

0:25:470:25:51

"Who are you?" Everyone gasped.

0:25:510:25:54

"I'm the monster of the woods."

0:25:540:25:56

"You?" said Mouse, "You're not very big."

0:25:560:25:59

"Bigger than you," it said.

0:25:590:26:01

"You're not horribly hairy either," added Rabbit.

0:26:010:26:05

"It flattened in the rain," it replied.

0:26:050:26:07

"And you're not scary," said Owl.

0:26:070:26:10

"It's true," the monster sighed,

0:26:100:26:12

"I don't know why everyone's frightened of me."

0:26:120:26:15

CRASH! BANG! The monster leapt into the Owl's arms.

0:26:150:26:19

"I hate thunder," he whimpered.

0:26:190:26:21

"There, there," Owl patted him kindly, "we're all safe now."

0:26:210:26:26

It was the next very important meeting. Owl handed round notes.

0:26:260:26:31

"Before we begin," Owl beamed, "let's welcome the monster of the woods."

0:26:310:26:36

The monster giggled, "But my friends call me Snuggles."

0:26:360:26:40

And everyone agreed, Snuggles was the perfect name. The end.

0:26:400:26:45

And that story was called Tappity-Tap! What Was That?

0:26:450:26:49

Hmm, I'll need to make sure I invite Snuggles

0:26:490:26:52

to our next very important meeting too.

0:26:520:26:55

I'll just pop him onto my list

0:26:550:26:57

and while I do it's time for you to go to bed,

0:26:570:26:59

and I'll see you soon for another story. Night, night.

0:26:590:27:03

Now, is there anyone else I need to invite?
