'On Deadly 60 I've had loads of incredible animal encounters. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:08
'Here's just one of my many favourites. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
'This is Deadly 60...Bites! | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
'This is Gomantong Cave in Borneo, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
'with some totally vast caverns.' | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Wow! | 0:00:23 | 0:00:24 | |
What a place! | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
The air is just thick with swifts. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
This has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Up in the roof of the cave | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
with the bats and the birds circling around you, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
it's kind of like paradise. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
But all those birds and two million bats create an awful lot of poo. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:55
And that falls down here, on the cave floor. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
So, if up there's heaven, then down is a kind of hell. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
But there are some deadly creatures that absolutely love it. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
It smells incredibly strong. And in fact anyone that | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
works in this cave for too long has to wear protective clothing, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
which explains why my crew | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
are all dressed like weird Oompa-loompas. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
'The crew have been working down here much longer than me. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
'That's why they're wearing the suits and I'm not.' | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
And this big hill | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
that I'm walking up here isn't actually a hill at all. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
See, all those creatures up there | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
obviously have to go to the toilet sometime. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
And over hundreds of years, it's built up into this gigantic | 0:01:41 | 0:01:46
pile of what's called guano. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
'Yup, if you haven't already guessed it, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
'I'm standing on the world's largest pile of poo. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
'And it stinks!' | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
If you look over the other side, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
you can see the ground seems to be moving. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
It's almost like there's thousands of little jewels. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
The reason the floor appears to be moving | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
is that it's absolutely covered with cockroaches. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
I have never seen anything so disgusting in my entire life. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:22
Every single square inch of ground is covered in these creatures. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
Now cockroaches are absolutely amazing animals. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
They are some of the world's greatest survivors. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
Cockroaches, it's said, can live for over a week without their heads. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
They really are some of the greatest developed insects in the world. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
But at the same time they're also absolutely hideous. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
Here in this cave | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
all of this wonderful dung is perfect food for them. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
And something else here | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
is even better food for cockroaches. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
Occasionally some of the bats and birds don't make it. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
And they fall down to the cave floor and become food for the cockroaches. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
These here are actually flesh-eating bugs. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
This possibly is one of the nastiest places on the planet. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
But there's another creature here | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
which actually eats these cockroaches for breakfast. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
And it's them that we're here to find. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
'But to find this cockroach killer, | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
'I'm going to have to descend even further into the darkness | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
'of the cave system below. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
'This place is definitely not for the faint-hearted. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
'And it looks like my next critter has already had its breakfast.' | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
Of all of the horrors that live | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
in this absolutely nightmarish place, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
down here is perhaps the most frightening. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
And it's the animal that I'm suggesting for the Deadly 60. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
Oh, crumbs! I have to say I absolutely hate them. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
There you go. Ah! Ha! Ha! | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
That one just ran over my hand. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
-OK, right. I'm going to be more gutsy this time. -Careful. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
There's one other side of that rock. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
This is scutigera or the long-legged centipede. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
I think there's another one on the other side of the rock as well, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
so I'm being very careful about how I handle this. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
It is quite venomous. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
One of the guys living in the area was bitten | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
by one of these centipedes not so long ago | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
and spent a week in hospital | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
so I'm taking care not to get bitten. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
They actually have like most centipedes... | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Ah! It just ran over my arm. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Sounds obvious, but one of the main challenges of living in a cave, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
is the dark and the fact that you can't actually see anything. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
Scutigera still manages to be an incredible hunter | 0:05:20 | 0:05:25
by using its long legs. Ah! | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
You can see as it moves, it'll just stop | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
and tap some of those legs over the rock's surface. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
What it's doing is using each and every one of those feet | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
to feel everything about the surface it's moving on. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
Building up a real mental picture of its environment, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
and if there's anything there that it might be able to eat. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
'It can grow as long as my forearm, has a mightily venomous bite, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:09
'and with those long legs, there's nothing down here | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
'that can escape it.' | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
And nothing that's more guaranteed to give you nightmares. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
So scutigera is going on the Deadly 60. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
And I'm going somewhere else. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
A truly terrifying cave predator. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
Venomous, creepily quick and one of the most frightening creatures | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
I've seen on the Deadly 60. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
