On Deadly 60 I've had loads of incredible animal encounters. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:08
Here's just one of my many favourites. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
This is Deadly 60 Bites. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
This time on Deadly 60... | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
we're here, in Brazil in South America. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
And this is the Amazon Rainforest, the largest jungle in the world. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
So what are we doing on a boat? Well, round here, this time of year, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
an awful lot of that forest is underwater. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
This will be our base for the next week. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
From it, the team and I will explore an area called the flooded forest. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:45
And it's exactly that - a gigantic jungle that | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
for half the year is under millions of tons of water | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
with just the tops of the trees showing. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Everything that lives here has adapted to the water. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
For the local people, boats are used for everything | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
from doing the school run to picking up the shopping. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
The wildlife is very distinctive with amazing birds, mammals, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
reptiles, bugs and the odd fish or two. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:15
Quite a lot of them...are deadly. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
It's only our first night on our Amazon riverboat, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
and something strange has been spotted | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
circling around in the waters. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
So I head down to investigate. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
It was something infinitely more scary than a piranha. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
Oh, my goodness. Look at that! | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
Oh, that is grotesque! | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
The strange ghostly shapes were a kind of catfish | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
called giant candiru. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
Normal candiru are about the size of my little finger, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
so these ones are relative monsters. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
Oh, look at that! It's got right into the belly cavity. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
That is one single bite. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
It just looks like he's bored a hole | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
straight into the gut of that fish. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
-That is horrible. -That is absolutely horrid. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
-You going to go swimming now? -Eh, no. No. Or possibly never again. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:36
This calls for a Deadly 60 experiment. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
OK. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41 | |
I'm going to time how long it takes them to devour this piece of steak. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
Just imagine if you fell into the water. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
How long would it take before the candiru started attacking you? | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
They are possibly the most grotesque, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
the most frightening fish I think I've ever seen. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
And no sooner have I put this bit of meat into the water, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
then all of a sudden it's... Ow! | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Ha-ha! Suddenly surrounded by seething, white, grotesque catfish. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:14
Look at... They're shredding it! They are absolutely shredding it. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
They just get a grip with those teeth and then spin their body | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
round and round and round and bore into it, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
like some insane living drill bit. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Dudu reckons that they'll actually do this to a living animal | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
swimming these waters at night. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
That is grim. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Argh! | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48 | |
Can I take piranhas off the Deadly 60 and put candiru on instead? | 0:03:48 | 0:03:53
-Yeah. -I wasn't planning on it, | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
but I have to say that's one of the scariest fish I've ever seen. | 0:03:55 | 0:04:00
Oh, ho-ho! | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Look at that. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
From steak to nothing... in 48 seconds. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:15
I'm certainly not going swimming in there. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
They are evil. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:20
One of the most gruesome animals on the list, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
they drill a hole through their prey | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
and can strip fish or meat right down to the bone | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
in a matter of minutes. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
They're absolutely horrifying. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
They're the giant candiru. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
