I'm Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:03
I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
But in this show I'm picking 25 of my favourites. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
I'm challenging my team of deadly artists to recreate a killer moment. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
You'll get to make some art yourself | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
and in the final show my team and I will choose | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
which animals will make it into my Deadly Art gallery. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
On today's Deadly Art | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
I meet a totally fierce feline. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
That was extraordinary! | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
My team of artists take on another deadly challenge. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
We can make a huge comic strip. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
And you can make your own art at home too. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
Today's deadly animal is a magical, mystical creature | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
renowned for being shy and elusive. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
It's one of the most perfectly adapted predators | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
of the northern hemisphere. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
They're beautiful, silent, quick and powerful. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
It's the lynx. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
Lynx are solitary animals, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
spending most of their time alone stalking their forest habitat. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
When it comes to the chase, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
they rely on stealth and ambush to catch prey as large as a reindeer. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
So it's time to meet the team who are ready and waiting in the studio | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
for today's Deadly Art mission. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
I'm Mike, a cartoon artist. There's nothing I like more | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
than turning my drawings into stencils and making them deadly. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
I'm Deevina. I'm a graphic artist | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
and I use a computer to create things like this. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
And in just a moment, you'll join me and the Deadly 60 crew in Norway | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
as we come face to face with this mysterious creature. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
But first, here's the killer moment I want my artists to recreate. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
Lynx are Europe's largest cats | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
with a startling ability to leap incredibly high | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
straight up into the air. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
So these are the three essential elements | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
I'd like my artists to recreate. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
The first is that powerful spring over two metres into the air. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
Their muscular frame and strong hind legs | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
enable them to catch passing birds by surprise. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Incredible ears. What makes the lynx different from other big cats | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
are these long, black ear tufts. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
These act like antennae, intensifying its hearing, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
so its able to hear a rabbit nibbling grass | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
up to 65 metres away. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Like all cats, the lynx has a beautiful fur coat, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
which can be incredibly thick if they need to keep warm in the snow. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
Mike and Deevina, over to you. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
Those markings are beautiful. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Yeah, that sandy fur has a really thick texture. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
We can't forget the essential elements - | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
we need to have our lynx leaping, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
-swiping at her prey. -Let's make it action-packed. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
We could make a comic strip. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
No, no! We could make a huge comic strip! Let's do it! | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
As a cartoon artist, Mike knows what he's talking about. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
All right, every comic strip has panels, so let's start with that. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
I'm going to draw a big box. Let's break it up into, say, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
three cells and we'll leave this for our action sequence at the end. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
-Let's add in some captions. -What about a forest scene? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
Let's get some green bold colours. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
This is really taking shape and, as we know, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
every comic has to tell a story. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
What about if the lynx stalked its prey, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
chased its prey and captured it for that killer moment? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Yeah, that's perfect. In this final sequence here, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
I was thinking I'd draw this big paw | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
and have this huge star burst coming out | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
as if it's just caught its prey. What do you think? | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
-Great! Let's get the materials. -OK. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
That'll be a killer comic strip. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
The lynx is a dazzling animal | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
that lives in both warm and cold countries | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
and I got the chance to meet one in snowy Norway. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
First up, I'll need a ladder. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
Lynx are awesome climbers. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
Their retractable claws work like crampons, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
taking them up almost vertical trees. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
A little bit of...meat, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
just up there. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
OK. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12 | |
The presence of food switches on their hunting instincts. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
She's thinking about it! | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
Go on, girl! | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
Ooh, there! Yes! | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
Whoa! | 0:04:30 | 0:04:31 | |
The last...swipe of the paw | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
was just so fast! | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
Magnificent. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
Join me later, when we'll see more of the lynx's leaping ability. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
How are Mike and Deevina getting on? | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
I've made this frame for our huge light box. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
Our comic strip is constructed with clear acrylic sheets | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
and we'll have layers of detail in stages | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
and at the end we'll shine a light right through it | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
to really bring it to life. | 0:04:58 | 0:04:59
We need to characters and action, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
but I'll start with the background layer. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
The lynx isn't only found in the snow. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
Our cat will be based in a vivid green forest. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
Now all we have to do is stick them down. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Mike has to be really precise placing that sticky vinyl. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
That's why he's the artist and not me. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
And to prove that, here he is with a Deadly Doodle for you to try. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
I'm going to show you how to draw a simple lynx head. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
It's always about basic shapes, but this time it's very simple. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
Let's start with a big hill in the middle of our paper. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:32
Two big triangles for the ears and a cup shape for the mouth. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
Add a triangle for the nose | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
and two big triangles for the eyes. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
That's your pencil sketch done. Told you it was simple. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Pick up our black marker and add the details. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
Start with the ear. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
I'm going to give it a bit more shape this time. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
Add in a tuft of hair at the top | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
and give it a flap. | 0:05:58 | 0:05:59
Same on the other side. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
Leaf shape for the ear, tuft of hair at the top | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
and a little flap. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
Ears done. We'll move on to the hair. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
Start with the top of his head, simple zigzag shapes. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
Lynx have jagged fur all around their face | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
so we'll add that in. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
Big zigzag lines this time. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
Curving down, add that back to our mouth. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
Go back over our pencil lines. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
This time, add a big box on the inside. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Draw in those big, sharp teeth. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Two at the top and two smaller ones at the bottom. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
Just shade in the mouth a little bit. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
Now for the nose. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:41
Go back over your triangle | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
and just shade in the bottom half. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Two lines to connect your nose to your eye. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Now we can start on those menacing eyes. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Go back over your pencil line, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
but on the top, add in a big, thick black line. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
For the eye, add a simple curved line and give him that cat's eye. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Draw a few markings around his eyes. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
They kind of look like eyelashes. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
Add in some details | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
for his nose, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:19
two lines to emphasise the top of his mouth. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
You can't forget his huge whiskers. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
Big long lines here. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
And there you have | 0:07:31 | 0:07:32
your simple lynx doodle. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
Great lynx, Mike! | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
Now over to Deevina, who's finished her light box | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
and has placed the background image. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
We've added the next layer of our acrylic sheet and, as you can see, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
this forms great borders for our comic strip. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
These three panels tell the story of our lynx about to catch his prey, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
building up to that killer moment. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
But our story is missing the main character - our lynx. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
So for that we've got more vinyl sheeting. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
All that's left to do is to draw our lynx | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
in the three stages of our story. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06
Now we need to cut out the shapes and add in the detail. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
Now it's on to the next stage, | 0:08:18 | 0:08:19
All comic books have bold designs and so does our lynx. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
One of our essential elements is those distinctive markings. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
With the yellow lynx cut out and in position, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
Mike adds more vinyl shapes and colours to add shade and definition. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
Now back to snowy Norway where I get closer to our lynx. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
They are awesome! | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
One of the lynx's deadly abilities | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
is their capacity to spring straight up in the air from the ground, | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
potentially to catch a flying bird. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
And I'm going to try and show you that now. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
Unfortunately this one here has just got an elevated position, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
which is a little bit...freaky. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
I'm hoping she'll come down, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
but not towards me. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:05
OK, all right. I'm going up. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
OK. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19 | |
I'm hoping that's about the right height. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
That's probably just over two metres. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
OK. All three of them are watching. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Are we going to see it? | 0:09:35 | 0:09:36
Oh! | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38 | |
That was extraordinary! | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
From a complete standing start, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
two metres straight up into the air. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
The lynx - | 0:09:48 | 0:09:49
prowling, pouncing predator of the frozen north. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:55
Definitely deadly! | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
And here's a DIY you can definitely try at home. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
OK, I've got this piece of cardboard | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
and I've drawn the simple outline of my lynx's head. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
Now, using all different kinds of tape, | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
I'm going to make a beautiful lynx art piece. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
I'm going to start with some black electrical tape. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
I'm going to outline where the mouth goes. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
This DIY is based on the doodle Mike drew earlier. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
Fill it all in. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
A simple triangle shape for the nose | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
and the same again - two triangles for the eyes. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
OK, that's the main features finished | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
and now for all the fur. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:40
Some nice brown packaging tape will make it look all scruffy. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
I'm just taping it down within the outline that we did earlier. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:49
The idea here is to be as messy as possible. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
You want lots of wrinkles to give the texture in the fur. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
It doesn't matter which way you go or how you fill it in | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
as long as you get that nice layered texture. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
If you have to turn a corner, just pinch your tape and keep sticking. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
OK, that's all the undercoat finished. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
For the eyes, I'm using two bits of sponge that I've cut out. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
I'm going to tape them down. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
That black outline really works to make them look menacing. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
Now, we're going for the shading under the ears. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
Mike's using a dark brown insulating tape. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
For the deadly teeth, I'm using some masking tape. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
Take a nice long strip... | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
..and simply just roll it up. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
Keep rolling it around. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
There's one tooth done. Stick it in place. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
And now with some black electrical tape, we'll add in the cat's eye. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
Simple triangle in the middle... | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
..of our sponge. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:07
-And here's your deadly lynx DIY! -Great job! | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
Earlier, we saw Mike adding the details to the lynx comic strip. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
-Deevina's got the next addition. -I've printed out these captions. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:20
The big art is complete, | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
but have Mike and Deevina risen to the challenge? | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
We've captured the essential elements. The ears are unique. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
I'm loving the tufts at the end. I think it works really well. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
The lynx has a beautiful fur coat. The way we used those shades | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
has highlighted those magnificent markings. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
I'm loving the comic book vibe. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
Me too. And of course, the final element - our lynx leaping | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
after its prey, that all-important killer moment. Nice work! | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
High five! | 0:12:52 | 0:12:53
So, it's time for the big reveal. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
This is the killer moment I challenged my artists to recreate. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
So let's take a look at our finished art. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
Oh, that is beautiful! | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
The graphic art is truly striking, and it definitely includes | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
all my essential elements. I love these three comic strip pictures. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
It's a clever way of representing the three stages of hunting. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
Their ears are really distinctive with their pointed ends, | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
and I love the magnificent markings on the fur. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
Art just doesn't get any deadlier than this. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
That's a top Deadly rating from me. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:35
But will it make it into my Deadly gallery? Maybe. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
See you next time for more Deadly Art. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
