My name's Steve Backshall. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
And this is Deadly Pole To Pole. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
Oh! | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11 | |
From the top of the world to the bottom. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
Whoa! | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15 | |
Deadly places, deadly adventures | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
and deadly animals. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
And you're coming with me, every step of the way! | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Argh! | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27 | |
I've developed a fascination bordering on obsession | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
with the true icon of Deadly - the great white shark. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
So what better than to dedicate a whole episode | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
of our Pole To Pole adventure to this perfect predator? | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
We've come to the ultimate shark-watching location - | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Guadalupe Island, off the coast of Mexico. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Over 4,000 miles from the North Pole, this is great white central. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
Heading out into the middle of the ocean, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
I will have an encounter with this lord of the sea like never before. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
I've been lucky enough | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
to bounce up against one in a tiny inflatable boat. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Wow! Next to me! Look at this! | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
To see one from the safety of a shark diving cage. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
Agh! | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22 | |
Even to see them leaping - | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
breaching out of the water in one of the world's most impressive attacks. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
No way! | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Just one big smack! | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
But this time, we're going one better, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
we're going to dive with a shark | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
out in the big blue, outside of the cage. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
This is quite simply the greatest shark encounter on the planet. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
That is no exaggeration. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
Great whites are the largest predatory shark on Earth. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
With over 300 serrated, sharp teeth, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
they can snag and slice through prey. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
Their exceptional sense of smell | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
means they can detect blood from miles away. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
And when they focus in, their streamlined, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
torpedo-shaped bodies and crescent-shaped tail | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
propel them through the water at terrific speed. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
This mission is certainly not for the faint-hearted. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
It's coming back towards us. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
So, with no time to lose we get loaded up, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
as this boat will be our home for the next five days. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
We've cast off from the Mexican mainland | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
and we're now heading straight out to sea, around about 240 miles, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
and the weather forecast is for high winds and high seas. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
We're going to be bouncing around all over the place. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
Our destination is Guadalupe Island, better known as Shark Island. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:02
An isolated, extinct volcano, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
it's one of the best places in the world to see the great white shark. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
It'll be a 24-hour journey through some very rough seas, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
but it will all be worth it. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
It was a rough night. I think we're all a little bit green now, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
but we've woken up to an absolute vision. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
This is Guadalupe Island. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
It's uninhabited, unimaginably wild | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
and surrounded by an infinite expanse of big blue Pacific Ocean. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
And, down there, are dozens of the most-feared predator on Earth. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
It's a very, very special place indeed. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Unfortunately, there's no time to enjoy the view. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
With just two days to complete our mission, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
we need to start drawing the sharks in, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
as stage one of this challenge | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
will be to get a sense of the sharks from the safety of a cage. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
We're going to use the great white sharks' supersenses as a tool | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
to attract them to come in close to us. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
They have an exquisite sense of smell | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
and they'll be attracted from miles away | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
by the scent of blood in the water. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:22
As soon as we see a shark in close, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
we're going to get down into the shark-diving cage | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
and try and get a sense with the particular animals. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Every shark has a different personality, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
so it will take time and patience to get to know the sharks | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
and find the perfect candidate for me to swim out of the cage with. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:41
After a few hours, our first shark appears, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
tempted in by the bait. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
Shark coming round. Shark coming up. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
And it's hungry. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
Whoa! It's completely taken the bait all in one go. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:05
That whole, huge tuna, which was the length of my leg, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
gone in a mouthful. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
Wow, things happen really quick round here. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
So with no time to lose, we get kitted up. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
Hopefully, this shark is going to stick around. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
I head down, with Johnny the cameraman, into the cage. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
Even though this is just stage one, my heart is already racing. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
Sitting, waiting - for perhaps the greatest predator on the planet | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
to appear from the deep - is a daunting experience. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
I'm starting to imagine things. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
I just keep thinking that I've seen something. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
But it's always just a shadow. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Then, out of nowhere, one appears. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
Oh, shark, shark, shark! | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
We have a shark! | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
Boy, do we have a shark! It's a monster! | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
-Where did he come from?! -I know! | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
It's just incredible that in water this clear, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:27
where you can see for what seems like an infinity, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:31
a shark can just appear out of nowhere. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
And this animal must weigh over a tonne, | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
probably four metres in length. It's huge. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
But, somehow, they still manage to surprise you. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
The reason for that is its camouflage. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
It's what's called "countershading". | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
The shark is white below and greyish-blue above. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:59
So whatever angle you look at it from, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
it blends perfectly into its background. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
You don't see this stealth attacker approaching | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
until it's too late. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:08
Ooh! | 0:07:10 | 0:07:11 | |
He put on a burst of speed there. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
I'm just trying to suss out what this animal's all about. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
I think he might be a little bit feisty to get out of the cage with. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
But I do have another plan for this animal. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
I'm going to see if we can measure its bite | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
using the Deadly bite-meter. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
I've never tried a bite test gauge with a great white before, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
but I have done it with a lemon shark | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
and it swam away with my gauge. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:40
Oh, no, no, no, no, no! He's got my pole! | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
So I've learned my lesson. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
This time, I'm tying it on with some rope. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Oh, and he's coming straight in for it! He's coming in for it already! | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
Got very, very close on his first pass. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:03
Unfortunately, the bait seems to be more to the shark's taste | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
than our gauge. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
Pretty close, pretty close! | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
And so much explosive power, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:21
coming out for a few tries with that tail. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
I tell you what, with this shark, I am very, very glad | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
that I've got the safety of these bars between me and him. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
But, again, the shark is only interested in the bait and the cage. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:39
Good grief! | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
I guess it just looks a bit weird. It doesn't look like food. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
I think we'll call the bite-test gauge a noble failure. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
Well, that was a great start, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
but the main one that's hanging around right now, | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
I think, is perhaps a bit too aggressive. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
I wouldn't feel comfortable swimming out into the water with him, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
so I think we are just going to need a little patience | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
and, while we're waiting, the perfect way to spend our time | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
will be to go and see what brings great whites to Guadalupe. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
I want to go and see their prey. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
So the crew and I head right up to the cliff edge | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
as, when you're the prey of a big apex predator, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
you never want to be far from safety. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
There's an animal that occurs here | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
that lives in the world of the great white | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
every single day of its life. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
It's a true survivor - the Guadalupe fur seal. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
This is a really dangerous place for fur seals to make a living. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
I mean these incredible volcanic cliffs | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
just drop straight down into the sea | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
and then go down to real depths very, very quickly. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
It means that the only place they can truly be safe | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
is right up close to the shore. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
I've dived in dozens of seal colonies around the world | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
and, usually, sitting this close to the shore, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
you'd be surrounded by seals. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
They'd be dancing around in the water around you. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
But not here. The animals keep very, very close to the edge | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
and that is for a very good reason. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
One, two, three, go! | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
I'll need to get to the bottom quickly, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
so I'm safe from becoming prey myself | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
and can enjoy this magical environment. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
Wow! What an extraordinary place! | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
This is right at the edge of the world | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
of the Guadalupe fur seal and the world of the great white. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:42
There is so much life here. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
It's like being in the world's greatest-ever aquarium. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
Oh, look at this! | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
In no time at all, I'm surrounded by fur seals. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
There are two very distinct groups of seals. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
There are the true seals | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
and the fur seals and sea lions, the eared seals. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
You can see these have external ear openings | 0:11:18 | 0:11:24
and long, broad flippers at the front of the body | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
that they use for propulsion. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
Very inquisitive, this one. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
Look at her, what a beauty! | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
Hello. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
I think she could see her reflection in my mask. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
How good is this?! Absolutely amazing! | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
They make everything underwater seem so effortless, don't they? | 0:12:19 | 0:12:23
I would give anything to be able to swim like that underwater. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
But no matter how hard I try, I just don't seem to have the same grace. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
These fur seals might just look like they're having fun, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
but, for them, life is all about one thing - | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
surviving great whites. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
I mean, once you're in the water, they hang at the surface | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
with their heads and those big eyes looking down, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
always on the lookout for a shark. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
They're incredibly fast, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
agile, manoeuvrable creatures. But they have to be. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
As to escape a great white, you need to be quick. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
But fur seals are predators in their own right. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
All over the world, they use these same skills to hunt prey. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
With their speed, agility and lion-like teeth, | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
they can catch food in all kinds of shapes and sizes with ease. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
And in Guadalupe, they have an added challenge for when they're hunting. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
Unlike many seals or sea lions, they hunt at night, | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
because the great whites are much less active then, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
for things like squid and lantern fish. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:19
They're quite sneaky. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
This one keeps trying to creep up behind me and bite my fins! | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
This animal has had to face so many challenges | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
in its life here in Guadalupe - | 0:14:36 | 0:14:41
from the great white sharks it shares the seas with, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
to having to hunt in waters | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
where everything can see them coming, they're so clear. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
But they are such sublime predators, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
they still manage to succeed. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
Oh, they are stunning! | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
They're beautiful, they're playful, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
they're balletic, | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
but they're also deadly. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
With strong jaws to catch fish food, | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
agile, fast and furious. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:27
Sneaking up on their prey unnoticed. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
They might be cute, | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
but they are also deadly. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
'(Deadly.)' | 0:15:37 | 0:15:39
Well, I would say there are few more beautiful dives | 0:15:45 | 0:15:50
in the whole world than that. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
But I reckon we've had our fair share of beauty now. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:56
Now it's time for the beast. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
But the sharks had disappeared for the day. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
So we'll have to wait until tomorrow | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
to leave the cage behind and attempt the ultimate Deadly challenge - | 0:16:06 | 0:16:10
to free dive with a great white. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
Before I head to bed, though, | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
I get the team together for a final briefing | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
as, tomorrow, safety will be paramount. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
If I go to swim out the cage, | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
then the first thing I do is get the OK from you, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
because you're much more experienced with this than I am. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
So you look at the shark, you suss it out, | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
you figure out it's OK and then | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
-you're going to be watching my back... -Yes. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
..and then I look down for that splash. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
And your last look should be looking down. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
Always look down first and then swim out. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
And, I guess, try and come alongside the shark | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
-as it comes up to the bait? -Yes. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
But not in front of it. You don't want to be in front of the shark | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
-and getting in-between it and the food. -Yes. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
Once the shark locks up on the bait, they don't change their minds. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
They'll go for the bait. Even if we are close by, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
they never change their minds, they just lock on the bait. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
Um, and, you know, obviously, | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
we don't want to even think about things going wrong, | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
but what is our kind of escape plan, if anything does happen? | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
Oh, bottom line is something bad happens, | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
we've got to get you out of the water. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
Because we're so far out from any type of civilisation, trauma centre, | 0:17:18 | 0:17:22
dive chamber. We've got to start evacuating you immediately. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
Any bite from any of these sharks, | 0:17:27 | 0:17:28
whether it be a juvenile or a large female or whatever, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
is going to be a catastrophic event. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
If someone gets bit, it's going to be catastrophic. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
'This could be a sleepless night for all of us.' | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
So, today's the day. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
A lot of people might ask why I would even consider | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
going outside of the cage with a great white shark | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
and, for me, it's very simple. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:55
I've spent a lot of my life trying to convince people | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
that sharks are not the misunderstood, | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
man-eating monsters that a lot of people think they are, | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
and this is kind of the best way of proving that. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
These animals have so much to fear from us | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
and we have next to nothing to fear from them. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
Across the world, sharks are being destroyed at an alarming rate. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
For every person killed by a shark, | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
around 10 million sharks are killed by man. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
From habitat loss to overfishing, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
to the demand for shark-fin soup, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
sharks are being decimated. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
By swimming with the greatest shark of them all, the great white, | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
hopefully people can see | 0:18:39 | 0:18:40
that sharks are not the monsters they seem to be. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
But at the moment, we're playing a waiting game. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
So much of wildlife-watching is just about patience | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
and waiting and this is no different, really. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
We are just staring off into the inky blue, | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
hoping to see that distinctive silhouette of a shark | 0:18:59 | 0:19:01
popping up to the surface. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
But at the moment, it's just not happening | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
and we're running out of time. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
So that we're ready when they do appear, | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
we start kitting up. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:15
The important thing is that diving with whites, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
your heart always skips a beat. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
It doesn't matter how many times you do it. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
The enormity of what I'm about to do is starting to become very real. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:39
Shark, shark! | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
This shark is definitely a player, this is perfect, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
this is one who will hang around if we play it right. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
It's really tricky, you've got to force yourself to go through | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
all of your checks, your air, | 0:19:56 | 0:19:57
with the microphone, with the mask, with your fins - | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
with all of the things that you have to have working | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
just to do a normal scuba dive. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:04
But all the time in the back of your mind, | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
is the fact that you're about to swim out in the open ocean | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
with one of the most epic predators on the planet. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
Somehow, you have to put that to the back of your mind | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
and focus on the important jobs. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:17
And I can't let nerves get the better of me, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
as animals can sense fear. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
I can't wait any longer. The shark is there. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
Are we ready? | 0:20:30 | 0:20:31
It's time to swim out into his world. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
This shark is known to the team, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
so we're confident we can open the cage door. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
But before I head out into the deep blue, | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
we need to be absolutely sure this shark is on its best behaviour. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
It's an eerie sight, seeing a great white swim past you like this. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:06
with the door of the cage open. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
It's a male shark, but it's a mature male and of a good size. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:20
This is an animal that isn't going to have anything to prove. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
And the conditions are perfect. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:28
So I think it's time to head out through the open cage door. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
My heart is racing. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
Leaving the cage, I suddenly feel very small. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
They are so completely transfixing, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
almost hypnotising. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:10
But once you see one shark, you can't take your eyes off it. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:15
But the fact is, it's not the shark you can see | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
that you have to be worried about, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
it's the shark that you don't see. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
So I'm very glad I have lots of eyes in the water. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
But even then, they can appear out of nowhere. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
One's behind you, Jose! One's behind you! | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
Sharks aren't the mindless killers people believe them to be, | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
but they're still predators. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
Even an exploratory bite from a great white, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
where they mean no harm, could be fatal. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
Coming back towards us, Johnny, straight at us. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
It's incredible - | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
the power they can create with a couple of whips of that tail. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:14
So dramatic. And he's coming back round for the bait again. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
This is very similar to the way that white sharks here in Guadalupe | 0:23:18 | 0:23:23
have to go for fur seals. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
There's too much visibility here. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
They have to rely on sneak attacks, | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
bumping into their prey, | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
taking a bite then releasing, swimming away | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
and letting it bleed to death. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
And their camouflage is so impressive | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
that sharks simply appear. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:46
Look! Look at that coming straight towards us. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
Different shark, completely different shark. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
It's obviously been in battles with other males - | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
it's lost an enormous chunk of flesh from its back. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
It's a newcomer. We haven't seen this one before, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
so I'm going to watch it very carefully | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
before I think about swimming alongside it. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
In fact, I'm going to go back in the cage. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
But the new shark doesn't stay long before our other male is back. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
I have enough air left for one last swim with this incredible predator. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:36
This is quite simply wonderful. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
This shark is so at ease, gliding alongside me through the water. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:05
Beautiful, just beautiful. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
I'm not suggesting it's deadly | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
because of its danger to people - far from it. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:31
But in terms of its mastery of the ocean, | 0:25:31 | 0:25:36
this creature is unparalleled. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
That is one of the great wildlife encounters. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:56
Unbelievable! | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
To share the open water with a great white shark - | 0:26:00 | 0:26:04
probably the most feared creature on the planet. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
Extraordinary. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:10
I will never, ever forget this moment. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
What an experience. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
The great white is one of those animals | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
that just seems to be perfect. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:31
Everything about it - its streamlining, | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
its simple camouflage, its teeth, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
all of those supersenses. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:38
It's perfection. It just cannot be improved upon. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:42
And if you were a tuna or a seal, | 0:26:42 | 0:26:46
it would probably be the very last thing you'd ever see. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
To human beings, it does have the power | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
to make us feel incredibly fragile and small. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
To everything else in the sea, it is deadly. | 0:26:55 | 0:27:00
Perfectly camouflaged, | 0:27:02 | 0:27:03
with one of the most feared mouths on the planet... | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
..and with a streamlined, torpedo body... | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
..it's perfection | 0:27:14 | 0:27:15
and definitely... | 0:27:15 | 0:27:17
'(Deadly.)' | 0:27:17 | 0:27:19
Join me next time for more Deadly Pole To Pole. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
It's coming back towards us, Johnny. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:29
'(Deadly.)' | 0:27:48 | 0:27:49 |
