potentially dangerous and unpredictable animals. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
So please do not try anything you are about to see yourselves. Got it? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Did you know that now, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
right now there are people all around the UK who are working | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
their socks off to help wounded wildlife and poorly pets. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
And we've managed to get VIP passes for willing helpers to get stuck | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
in at the busiest vets, wildlife sanctuaries and rescue centres. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
Rats! | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43 | |
It's tough and dirty work but somebody has got to do it. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
On today's show Georgia | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
and Tenisha organise a cliff top getaway for Janet the Gannet. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Zeeshan and Sercan get to the heart of a horse's troublesome ticker. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
Oh, look at that. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
And Dom has to handle the inside of a rattlesnake's rest room. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
Come on. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
Come on, come on, aren't you going to be late for work? | 0:01:07 | 0:01:12
Are you sure this is safe? | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
Yes, this is a magic door. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
It can transport you to wherever you need to go. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
How does it know where I want to go? | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
It can read your mind. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
I've just been. Shall we try again. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:31
Better. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Here at Secret World they have a team of dedicated staff who | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
make it their mission to take in poorly, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
unwanted and sick animals, nurse them back to health | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
and then eventually release them back to the wild. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
And today's dedicated helpers are Georgia and Tenisha. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
Georgia likes all things wild. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
But she's down on dreary doggies and mundane moggies. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
It's quite boring as well, it's like seeing dogs every single day | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
and like seeing cats every single day. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
I'd like to see a badger. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
I would like the experience to like maybe stroke one or hold one | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
or something. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
Tenisha is not a fan of flappy things. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
In fact, most pesky pets get right up her nose. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
I don't know why, but they like to do all their droppings | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
in our front garden. It's not very nice and believe me it smells. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:25
Go away. You are annoying. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
Just go! | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Unfortunately, it could be a bit of a stinky one today, because you are | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
heading down to one of the biggest wildlife rescue centres in the UK. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Georgia. Tenisha, welcome to Dick and Dom Go Wild. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
-You are all right. Pleased to be here? -Yeah. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
Fabulous. We have got two containers here. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
One's got my breakfast and the other one has got breakfast for an animal. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Whichever one you choose you have to feed that to the relevant party. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
This one. So if you take that one. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
See which one you have got. You've got my lunch. Only joking. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
That is most certainly meal worms for an animal. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
We will do all this later. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
You guys go and get your togs on and go and get all scrubbed up | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
because you are going to get messy. Go on. Go and get changed. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
Why so messy? Well this place takes in | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
4,000 needy wild animals every year. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
It's going to be a busy one. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
Sara. Good to be back at Secret World. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
Now Tenisha has got a big box of meal worms. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
What are they doing to do with them? | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
You are going to help me feed some very hungry little mouths | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
and that's feeding baby birds. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
-You think you can handle that? -Yeah. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
I know you are scared of all things flappy, which covers bats and birds. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
You should be OK. You are in very safe hands. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
-They are only little. -Off you go. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
Tenisha might not be big on birds, but just maybe these little | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
rescued orphans might help change all of that. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
-They are so small. -So cute. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
These tiny swallow chicks were found abandoned on the ground after | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
-falling from their nest. -This the biggest one. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
He's about three weeks. This is a little swallow. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
They can't be returned to their nests, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
but they are getting well looked after here. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
So they come here just for a few days | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
and as soon as he's flying we will let him go. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
-Before that they need plenty of food. -OK. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
Now you need to start with the ones that are opening their mouths | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
and just keep going until they stop. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
They will probably take quite a few. There we go. Lovely. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
I think they are really really cute. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
They are aren't they. They are quite cheeky. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
Do you want to give them a little bit of water as well. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
What we do to give them | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
water is gently pop a little paint brush into your bowl | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
and then exactly the same and just let them suck the water off there. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
A flying start girls. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
Your brush with the baby birds have given them | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
a real chance of reaching for the skies very soon. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
And later, the lightest of touches if needed when Georgia | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
and Tenisha help a blonde hedgehog. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
He feels nice. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
But first, Dick and his team nurse nags in Norfolk. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Here at Redwings they give the horses, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
donkeys and ponies plenty of much-needed care and attention. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
Their mission is to get as many of them re-homed as possible. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
If not, they will spend the rest of their lives here at the sanctuary. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
Today, I've got two helpers who will hopefully be chomping at the bit | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
and won't fall at the first fence. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Let's meet them. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Meet Sercan and Zeeshan who find animals a bit hit and miss. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
Sercan is an animal lover, mostly. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
Huge, hairy spiders freak him.. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
Really big spiders like tarantulas and... | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
I feel them crawling up my sleeve and I was like screaming. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
Zeeshan is not crazy about cats and kittens. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
But this lad loves easy-to-handle scaly things. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
If I was going to have an animal and it would be a fish, because | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
they are easy to look after and it doesn't actually scare anyone. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
-Right lads, giddy up. -we've got some animals to work with. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Ah, Sercan and Zeeshan the city boys. Welcome to the countryside. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
I bet living in the city you don't see many animals. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
You don't see any animals there. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
You once got kicked by a horse? | 0:05:55 | 0:05:56
Yes, I was in Turkey and I tried to stroke the horse, | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
but it kicked me on the back. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
-Did it hurt? -Yeah. -Are you OK with horses now? | 0:06:02 | 0:06:03
-Yeah. -That is a good thing, because today | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
you are at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
so we'll be meeting many of them. Right. Put these on and let's do it. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
The staff here look after more than 1,000 mistreated or homeless horses. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
Arriving here is often a life changing experience | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
and the team work hard to make lovely for them again. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
First up for our new team members | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
it's a busy round of check ups with vet nurse, Ray. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
-So who is this? -This is Snow White. -Why is she here? | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
Snow White was part of a big rescue that we done in January 2008. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
She came in as a part of that rescue with a hundred other horses. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
So we took in an awful lot in the one go. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
-What is wrong with her? -She's got a really, really poorly eye. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
We are going to get you guys | 0:06:47 | 0:06:48
-to help us treat her this morning if that's OK. -OK. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Sad Snow White and her pals were rescued from terrible conditions | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
all were underweight and unwell. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
Life's improving for the Shetland pony, | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
but she still needs a lot of medical care. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
OK, guys, so we are going to take her sunglasses off... | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
if you want to pull the visor off just so that it comes over her ears. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
Do you fancy just taking that off. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
-Brilliant. Brilliant work. Well done. -How did the horse get poorly eyes? | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
They can get it for all sorts of reasons, | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
but she's probably banged it on something really badly. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
It looks a little bit horrible doesn't it. It's all red and nasty. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
That's because she had what we call an ulcer | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
and it was a really really bad nasty ulcer. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
-Can you see this funny tube that we've got going on here. -Yeah. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
It actually pumps the medication straight into her eye all day long | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
so that her eye is getting better all the time. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
You fancy shining that light in the eye. If you come close to her, | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
get you to shine that light in the eye. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
Can you see how it makes it look a little lighter. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
Can you see how it looks a little bit dimply in the middle there. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
Yes, it's like a little lump. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:51
That's exactly right. That is where the ulcer actually was. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
That is the really sore bit. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
Now, looking at it this morning it looks like it's doing quite well. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
It's a little bit sore, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
but that's why we've got the medication going in to help it out. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
With the eye checked, the protective visor goes back on. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
There you go. Good girl. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
And with more TLC and a bit of luck, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
Snow White should make a complete recovery. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
And later, Sercan and Zeeshan | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
work to make Bobby look like a dazzler again. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
He's a very good boy in taking his medicines again isn't he? | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
He really likes them. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
Back at the rescue centre, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:29
Georgia and Tenisha are working hard with rescued animals. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
The next job I've got lined up for you is to clean out | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
some baby hedgehogs. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
Er, right, there could be a bit of an issue here. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
I don't really like hedgehogs, because you go up to them | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
and start smoothing them and you are trying to be friendly | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
and then out from nowhere comes like these spikes. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Five week old Blondie was brought in a week ago after being found | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
wandering in a garden in the daytime, a worrying sight | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
because healthy hedgehogs are normally only up and about at night. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
So you can see he's really unusual and all his spines are very light. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
He's not what we call an Albino, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
because he's got proper normal black eyes. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
He's just like a normal hedgehog that's been born with blonde hair. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
Do you think he will be living in the wild again or... | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
With this little hedgehog we are probably going to actually | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
end up having to keep him, because it just makes him | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
much more vulnerable, because he's really obvious. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
Looks like Tenisha is softening her stance on spiny hogs. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
It feels nice. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
He's not prickly really is he. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
You feel how soft their tummy is. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:34
They haven't got spines on their tummy and it's all soft and furry. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
You must be making Blondie feel all relaxed, Tenisha, because hedgehogs | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
roll into a ball and become spiky when they feel threatened. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
Do they eat a lot? | 0:09:46 | 0:09:47
They eat a lot and they also poo a lot. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
The next thing we've got to do, we are going to clean out the poo | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
and give them some breakfast. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:56
Just when hedgehogs were starting to feel so appealing, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
there is hard graft to do. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:00
Might be a bit pongy, but our new hedgehog helpers get stuck in. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
-Stinks, doesn't it. -Yeah. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
Then they serve up a breaky of meaty cat food which hedgehogs love. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Nice new home. You should like this. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
That's one nice and full hedgehog in a spotless home. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Good work, girls. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:21
The poo was really disgusting. I would hate to clean that out. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
We had to really, because we want the hedgehogs to be living | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
in a happy clean environment. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:30
And later, Georgia and Tenisha help tattoo a rescued badger! | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
This is so cool, isn't it, Georgia? | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
Yeah. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:39 | |
Sercan and Zeeshan are proving they have an eye for helping | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
horses at a sanctuary in Norfolk. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
It's all go here and a new patient needs their attention now. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
This is Bobby. Can you see how different | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
Bobby looks to the last horse that we saw. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:54
You see how he has a really bald looking head? | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
He has no hair on him does he? | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
That is because Bobby had a really nasty reaction | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
to a medication that he had. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
19-year-old, Bobby came here 10 years ago | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
because he got panicky whenever anybody tried to ride him. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:12
Now what we're going to do is give Bobby some medicine | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
and that is going to help his skin | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
and it's going to stop him itching. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:18
-So you guys up for that? -Yeah. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:19
The antibiotics and steroids | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
are carefully hidden in amongst his nosh. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
If you hold your hands really closely together, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
that's perfect and we will do the same to you. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
And then what we are going to do, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
we are just going to hold it under Bobby's nose, so if you keep | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
your hands nice and flat and Bobby is just going to nibble on that. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
He's a very good boy at taking his medicines, isn't he? | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
He really likes them. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
What we will do is we will get you to do that as well. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
He really tickles. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
Yeah. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46 | |
How long to do you think it will take for Bobby's hair to grow back. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
It's going to take a little bit of time. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
Probably in sort of two or three weeks he's going to be | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
looking an awful lot more like a much more normal horse again | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
with his coat back a bit more. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:56
That's impressive work, lads. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
Not a sign of Sercan's horse hesitancy either. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
When I was younger, I got kicked by a horse. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
But now I feel I'm really confident with horses, | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
because they are really friendly and Bobby was a really nice horse. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:11
I've never seen a hairless horse. I've only seen a hairless cat. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
It was really funny when we had to feed Bobby | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
because it was like ticklish, because he was like munching away. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:23
And later, Sercan and Zeeshan get to the heart of horse Tracy's | 0:12:25 | 0:12:29
health issue. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
Lub-dub, lub-dub. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:35
But first, Dom is rattled by killer critters. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
It's raining cats and pigs out there. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
Forget the rain. This is the door of death. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
CRACK OF THUNDER | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
Behind there are one hundred beasties | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
that could blind, maim and kill you. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
And Dom's job today is to enter this room | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
and help clean up the home of one of these snakes. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
The Western Diamond Back Rattlesnake. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
A bite from this venomous critter would feel like hot needles | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
entering your skin | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
and the highly toxic venom could rot your flesh and even kill you. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
Hang on a minute. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
How come I get to go in there and get killed to death? | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
You just stay here doing nowt. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:18
Nowt? I'm going to be holding the blooming thing. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
-That is cheating. -Only a bit. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
Dom needs to enter the room of death | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
and clean out the rattlesnake's enclosure. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
So, Mark, what are the creatures we've got in here? | 0:13:28 | 0:13:30
We've got cobras. They can kill you. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
We've got things like death stalker scorpions. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
So what kind of scorpions? | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
-Death Stalker scorpions. -Right. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
I would focus on the cleaning task | 0:13:41 | 0:13:42
and getting out of there as soon as you can, old mate. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
OK. Let's glove up and get on. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
Yes. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49 | |
I wonder what rattlesnake poo looks like. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:51
It's not like dog poo, is it? | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
Nope, no-one in there. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
There you go. How bizarre. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
It's snake poo actually, Dom | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
Looks like it's got fur in it or something. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
It's exactly what it is. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
Is it? Why, what does it eat? | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
It eats rodents such as mice. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
Nothing for me to do now. Maybe I'll have a sandwich. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:20
Not sandwiches! | 0:14:20 | 0:14:21
No, no, not in there! | 0:14:23 | 0:14:24
What? The snake is over there. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:32
At the rescue centre in Somerset, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
Georgia and Tenisha are taking a walk on the wild side. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
As animal care manager, Sara needs some help with another patient. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
-Wow. That is quite a strong smell. What is in the box? -I will show you. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:52
I've never seen a badger before. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
I've never seen a badger before. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
I would like to touch one and hold one. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
Well them, meet Lush, a very tough badger cub. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
She's been a little miracle. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:06
The four year old was found on a roadside two weeks ago, | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
disorientated and very ill. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
She was totally collapsed and she looked as if she was dead, really. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
Miraculously, last week she took her first steps and actually stood | 0:15:16 | 0:15:20
and she's now ready to actually go back to the wild. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
Before that, the team are going to put an identity tattoo on her. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
You on there and you on there. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
A permanent marking will make it easier to identify her | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
if ever she's in need of human help again in the future. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
First the team must give Lush an anaesthetic jab | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
so she can snooze through the delicate process. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
She's completely asleep now. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:49
You can have a really good look at her, because you'll probably never | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
ever get the opportunity to come near a badger again. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
You can have a look and see just how long her claws are. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
She uses those for digging | 0:15:57 | 0:15:59
to make great big places to live underground. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
What is the tattoo? | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
It's a series of different numbers. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
The first two numbers are the number of badger that has come | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
into the centre, so that's the 26th badger we've had so far this year. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:14
The second two numbers are the years and then a 'W' | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
at the end which means that she came from Secret World. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
What we do is, if you put a little blob of that jelly | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
and just rub it neatly over the top of the numbers it just keeps | 0:16:24 | 0:16:28
it nice and soft as it heals. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
This is so cool isn't it, Georgia? | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
Yeah. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35 | |
And our loyal badger lovers stay at Lush's side | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
until she comes round from her deep sleep. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
Are you going to wake up now? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:42
Are you going to stand up. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
She's going to feel a little bit woozy for a while. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
There we go. Lifting her head up now. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
Doing the tattoo in the room I thought was like really amazing | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
and really good and cool. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
I'm really proud of what I've done, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
because I know I've just helped an animal that's almost lost its life. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
And later, Georgia and Tenisha get ready to release Janet the gannet. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
What do you think, girls? Ready for release? | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
I think we'd best get her in the box before she gets really angry. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
Sercan and Zeeshan are helping horses | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
at a huge sanctuary in the UK. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
Vet Nicky is concerned for one of the poorly residents. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
This is Tracy. She's only five years old. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
She's got a bit of a heart problem and it's something we need to | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
investigate further, so we know whether or not we can rehome her. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:38
How big are horse's hearts? | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
In a horse of this size, her heart is going to be about this big. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
As big as your head. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:45
It's pretty pretty huge. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
That heart has to work really hard and has to be very efficient. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
If there is something wrong with it probably means she's not | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
suitable to go to a new home. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
A heart acts just like a pump | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
and Nicky suspects Tracy may have a bit of a blockage. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
Using a stethoscope, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:03
our vets in training need to help check Tracy's ticker. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
Sercan has a listen first. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:08
lub dub, lub dub, lub dub. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:10
So am I right in thinking, | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
some of those gaps sounded a bit too long didn't they. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:24
Now Zeeshan steps in to give a second opinion. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
Did you notice some longer gaps in there? | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
-Yeah. -It might be a good idea to go and do some further tests. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:36
Today's tests will help Nicky decide on horse Tracy's future. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:41
If her heart condition is serious, she will live out | 0:18:41 | 0:18:43
the rest of her life here under the close supervision of the team. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
Zeeshan has got his hands on a hi-tech scanner | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
that uses ultrasound. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
This cool kit will help us see inside Tracy. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:54
If you press onto the horse, that's lovely. She won't mind. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:58
As firm as you can. Oh, look at that. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
Do we think the heart looks like it's stopping for quite | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
a long time doesn't it. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
Do you think Tracy can be rehomed? | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
I think what we've seen today is that her heart does stop for | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
quite long periods of time and that would worry me I think with a rider | 0:19:16 | 0:19:21
sitting on her back just in case Tracy did feel faint at any time. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:25
I think she gets early retirement | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
and she will probably quite enjoy it too. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
So no new home for Tracy. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
She is going to enjoy five star treatment | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
here for the rest of her life. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
It's really a shame for her, because she won't get rehomed. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
But I think she's got a nice home here. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
Tracy time to put your hoofs up and relax | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
and enjoy your early retirement. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
And later, Sercan and Zeeshan square up to Ben the foal with | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
the fierce thirst. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
-Wouldn't like to have a drinking contest with him, would you? -No. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:04
And there he is, | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
a tiny little seahorse floating around not doing much at all. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
He's definitely not doing much at all. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
-Quite boring aren't they seahorses? -Boring? Seahorses are some of the | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
ocean's most beautiful creatures. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:17
Beautiful. Have you seen the gut on that. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
That's a pot bellied seahorse. That's just the way they look. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
Just the way they look. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
Right. The thing is, sorry Mr Seahorse but he looks pregnant. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
It's weird you should say that, because in the mysterious | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
world of the seahorses, it's actually the male that gives birth. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
Are you telling me a fellow has a baby? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
Yes. He can give birth to over seven hundred at one time. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
No wonder it's belly looks so big. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:41
It might not be pregnant, because that's just how they look. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
Do they eat a lot? | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
Oh yes, they do. They are greedy little fellow seahorses. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
But that is not the reason their tummies look so big. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
Don't tell me, it's just how they look! | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
He's getting it now. I've brought you a little present. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Have you? | 0:20:56 | 0:20:57
It's a saddle. Are you getting on? | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
Course I am. Hat. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
SPLASH! | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
Back at the horse sanctuary Sercan | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
and Zeeshan are working with horses of courses. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
Up for their help next is young foal, Ben. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
He came to the sanctuary after his mum died | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
when he was just one day old. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
The little lad has been missing out on mum's natural milk. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
Ray needs our boys to feed him instead. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
Give it a good shake so it's nice and level. That's perfect. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
What kind of powder is this? | 0:21:30 | 0:21:31
This is a milk replacement powder. This is about as close as we can get | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
to what he would have been getting from his mum. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
You want try and make it so that there is no lumps in there at all. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
It looks pretty good, doesn't it. I think that's us all ready. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
-Shall we go and feed Ben, boys? -Yeah. -Brilliant. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Lads, you shouldn't have. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
Milk, I like a nice bit of milk of an afternoon. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
No, no. This is milk for the horse. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
What? | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58 | |
Not bad, actually. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
Right, let's find a hungry foal to feed | 0:22:00 | 0:22:01
or maybe the hungry foal can find us. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
Ben has clocked the milk. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
He is gently coming over and so now it's really | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
important that we are really really quiet while he comes over boys. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
If you guys have your milk out in front of you, hopefully he's | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
going to come and have a little look at the milk in a second. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
A bit of a stand off at first. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
Here he comes. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:23
Just hold the milk out and be nice and quiet. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
Watch how quick he drinks it. Remember, no noises. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
See how quick he drinks that. Really fast, isn't he? | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
He's really fast isn't he? | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
I wouldn't like to have a drinking contest with him, would you? | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
Down in one, son. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
Our boys are doing a top job keeping Ben calm. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
If you tip it ever so slightly. Perfect. Well done. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
He can get all the last little bits. Is that yummy mate? | 0:22:52 | 0:22:56
Now he's got milky chops. Milky chops on my hand. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
How often do you have to feed, Ben. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
At the moment, Ben is getting four feeds through the day | 0:23:01 | 0:23:06
and through the night he gets another five. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
He's getting nine feeds a day at the moment. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
He likes your red boiler suit! | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
Ben is not bashful. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
He even poses for a close up before heading off to play | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
out with his surrogate mum. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
Well done, buddy boy! | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
-So who is this one here? -This is actually called, Fergie. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
This is a horse that we put with Ben and is Ben's adoptive mum. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
She is the one who is sort of looking after Ben and | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
teaching him how to be a young horse and teaching him all his manners. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
Good luck in the future, Ben. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
Let's hope you find yourself a new home with people who will | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
care for you just like our top lads have here today. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:45
That's it, chaps. Do you feel more confident around horses now? | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
-Yes. -What was your best bit Zeeshan? | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
My best bit was the heart scan. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
Sercan? | 0:23:52 | 0:23:53
My favourite bit today was when we fed Bobby. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
Good old, Bobby. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
I must say, lads, cracking work and you have done my proud. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
At the wildlife rescue centre, Georgia | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
and Tenisha have one final furiously flappy job to finish. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
Have a look behind you. This is your next customer. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
-Is it a sparrow, a robin or a gannet? -A gannet. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
Ten points, well done. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:22
Janet the Gannet was found | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
grounded in a garden far away from her seaside home. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
We had some fairly stormy high windy weather a few days before, | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
so we think he's just been blown inland and then can't get back out. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
Janet was dangerously under weight, | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
but has spent the last two weeks here filling her face with fish. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
Now it's time for her to taste freedom once again. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
Let me get this right. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:44
We are going to take this bird to a cliff and throw it into the air. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
Pretty much that, yes. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:50
Now remember this, our team aren't big on birds. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
But this is the task that could completely win them over, | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
because they have been asked to help get Janet home. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
These are sensational seabirds. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
Gannets dive at lightening speeds of over 60 miles per hour | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
to pluck out fish which they neck in one gulp. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
They are feisty and stabby. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
So how come it's me who has to grapple with a gannet? | 0:25:12 | 0:25:16
Are you going to scream like a girl. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:17
I'm not going to scream like a girl! OK. All right, Janet. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
-So what do you think, girls? Ready for release? -Yeah. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
I think we best get her in the box before she gets really angry. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
Ready, one, two, three. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
So here we are at the top of a cliff with a bird in a box about to | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
release a gannet back to its habitat. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
Now, what is the likelihood that the bird is not going to fly? | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
We are hoping that there isn't and it is going to fly. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
We've got really nice wind. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:56
The conditions are right | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
and you can see that he's desperate to get out of that box. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00
Janet the Gannet is ready to go. Let's do it. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
The big moment. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
Reach for the sky, Janet! | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
You ready, girls? | 0:26:11 | 0:26:12
One, two, three! | 0:26:12 | 0:26:15
Cheers, Janet. I've just told everyone you are a fantastic flyer. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
Come on. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:25
-Yeah! -That's more like it. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
Watching the gannet be released | 0:26:38 | 0:26:43
was really, really amazing. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
It made me feel really happy and excited. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
A bit of a floppy start wasn't it? Going straight up and straight down. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
But I've got my theory. I reckon you fed that bird so much mackerel | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
and it had such a fat gut and couldn't get up off the floor. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Probably, but at least we got the bird up | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
and that's what we set out to do. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:00
So Janet is back home and the girl's work is done. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
I've enjoyed everything. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
But I have to say, | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
feeding and holding the chicks were really really good. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
Round my way there isn't much wildlife at all. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
What I've done today has made me realise that I really like wildlife. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
And that is what Go Wild is all about. Love it. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
RATTLING | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
Did you just hear a rattlesnake? | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
I think I did. Keep moving. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:31
RATTLING | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
There it is again. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
It's stalking us. Let's get out of here. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
I think I need a poo. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:40
I'll call for help. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:42
Hello? | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
