0:00:390:00:40

Hello, I'm Maddie, and today I'm getting ready for a birthday party.

0:00:440:00:48

Have you been to a birthday party? They're really fun, aren't they?

0:00:480:00:52

Birthdays can be celebrated in lots of different ways.

0:00:520:00:55

You might play fun birthday games or sing birthday songs or

0:00:550:01:00

eat special food.

0:01:000:01:02

But, there's something else that you might find at a birthday party.

0:01:020:01:06

Can you guess what it is?

0:01:060:01:07

That's right, it's a cake.

0:01:070:01:10

One of my favourites is called Victoria sponge.

0:01:100:01:14

I love all of the jam and cream inside it.

0:01:140:01:17

And these bits are called sponge.

0:01:170:01:20

Sponge is made from lots of different ingredients,

0:01:200:01:23

like milk, flour, butter,

0:01:230:01:25

eggs and sugar.

0:01:250:01:28

But do you know how sponge becomes thick, lovely and bouncy,

0:01:280:01:32

just like this?

0:01:320:01:34

How does a cake work?

0:01:340:01:37

Let's find out.

0:01:370:01:38

To show you how a cake works,

0:01:430:01:45

I'm going to bake a cake for the party.

0:01:450:01:48

Now, I need to mix all of our ingredients together in a big bowl.

0:01:480:01:54

In goes the sugar with the flour,

0:01:540:01:57

and then the butter.

0:01:570:01:59

And now, for the fun bit -

0:01:590:02:01

cracking the eggs.

0:02:010:02:02

And the milk.

0:02:040:02:05

Oh, and we mustn't forget this.

0:02:070:02:10

This is called baking powder

0:02:100:02:12

and it's a special ingredient that will make sure our cake rises

0:02:120:02:16

in the oven.

0:02:160:02:19

Now, we need to mix all our ingredients together.

0:02:190:02:24

And for that, we need an electric whisk.

0:02:240:02:27

Watch this.

0:02:270:02:28

WHIRRING

0:02:280:02:29

Because it works really quickly,

0:02:300:02:32

it's going to put lots of air bubbles into the mix.

0:02:320:02:36

WHIRRING

0:02:370:02:38

Listen to the sound of the electric whisk.

0:02:380:02:41

WHIRRING GETS LOUDER

0:02:410:02:43

It's like an aeroplane taking off.

0:02:430:02:46

OK, have a look in my bowl now.

0:02:510:02:53

Can you see that all of the different ingredients have

0:02:530:02:57

been mixed together into a smooth, runny mixture?

0:02:570:03:00

I'm just pouring our mixture into two cake moulds,

0:03:050:03:08

ready to go into a hot oven.

0:03:080:03:10

The oven is hot.

0:03:130:03:15

You should never go near a hot oven yourself -

0:03:150:03:18

always ask a grown-up to do it.

0:03:180:03:20

When cake mix goes into a hot oven,

0:03:240:03:27

it starts to bake.

0:03:270:03:29

It will rise and get bigger and bigger and turn into

0:03:290:03:32

a tasty sponge, but to find out how, we need to get a closer look.

0:03:320:03:36

When the ingredients are mixed together, they start to change.

0:03:380:03:42

This is called a chemical reaction.

0:03:420:03:45

First, the baking powder and the milk start to react together,

0:03:450:03:49

making bubbles of air.

0:03:490:03:51

The air bubbles are surrounded by a layer of fat

0:03:510:03:54

from the butter, which traps them inside the mixture.

0:03:540:03:58

Then, when the mixture goes into the oven, the hot air inside

0:03:580:04:02

makes the egg white surround each bubble and go hard.

0:04:020:04:06

This protects the bubbles so that they don't burst.

0:04:060:04:10

As the mixture heats up more,

0:04:100:04:12

the trapped air bubbles start to get bigger.

0:04:120:04:16

As they grow, the flour in the mixture around them starts to

0:04:160:04:19

stretch. It stretches and stretches until it can't stretch any more.

0:04:190:04:25

And by then, the cake is ready.

0:04:250:04:27

It's really clever, isn't it?

0:04:280:04:30

My cake takes 20 minutes to bake, so I'm going to use my special

0:04:300:04:34

camera to do something called a time-lapse.

0:04:340:04:38

This means we can film something that takes a long time,

0:04:380:04:41

but when we watch it back we can see it happening really quickly.

0:04:410:04:45

Right, the camera is in place,

0:04:450:04:47

so we've got to wait 20 minutes until the cake is ready.

0:04:470:04:52

You can see how the cake mixture is very flat to start and now watch...

0:04:520:04:58

Look how the cake is growing.

0:04:580:05:00

TIMER ALARM RINGS

0:05:030:05:05

I think it's ready.

0:05:060:05:08

Perfect!

0:05:100:05:11

Sponge number one.

0:05:130:05:14

And sponge number two.

0:05:180:05:20

The sponges have got so much bigger and they smell fantastic.

0:05:200:05:27

Look.

0:05:270:05:28

They've risen by about this much.

0:05:280:05:30

That's three centimetres.

0:05:300:05:33

Now, I just need to add the finishing touches to our cake.

0:05:330:05:36

I loved seeing how cake works.

0:05:380:05:40

What was your favourite bit?

0:05:400:05:43

Do you remember the special ingredient that made the cake rise

0:05:430:05:47

when it reacted to the milk?

0:05:470:05:49

It's baking powder.

0:05:490:05:50

Did you hear the sound of the electric whisk?

0:05:510:05:54

WHIRRING

0:05:560:05:57

And did you see the way the cake rose in the oven?

0:05:590:06:02

So, now you know how a cake works.

0:06:100:06:13

And you know all about the special chemical reaction that

0:06:130:06:17

happens inside the cake, and how the air bubbles make the cake rise.

0:06:170:06:21

And, if we cut into the cake, you'll see that the air bubbles

0:06:210:06:24

are still there, and that's what makes the sponge nice and fluffy.

0:06:240:06:28

Can you see all of the little air bubbles?

0:06:300:06:33

This cake looks like it's going to be yummy.

0:06:330:06:37

I love having parties at my house,

0:06:370:06:39

but you can have parties in lots of different places.

0:06:390:06:42

In the garden, in a park, a swimming pool.

0:06:420:06:45

I can think of another place you might have a party.

0:06:450:06:49

Do you know what it is?

0:06:490:06:51

It's a soft play centre.

0:06:510:06:53

Brilliant!

0:06:530:06:54

I like crawling through the rollers and running through the tubes.

0:06:560:07:00

And...

0:07:000:07:02

playing in the ball pool!

0:07:020:07:03

But, do you know how all of these things in

0:07:030:07:06

a soft play centre are made?

0:07:060:07:09

Let's find out!

0:07:110:07:12

To find out, I've come here, to a soft play factory.

0:07:180:07:22

They make lots of soft play items here.

0:07:250:07:27

They come in different shapes and sizes, lots of different

0:07:270:07:31

bright colours and, of course, they're all soft - even the floor.

0:07:310:07:35

Let's see how they make the floor.

0:07:360:07:39

Like all the soft play items made here,

0:07:400:07:42

the floor pads start off with this.

0:07:420:07:45

It's a material called PVC.

0:07:450:07:47

It's really shiny, isn't it?

0:07:470:07:49

This is Sarah and she's going to cut out all the pieces we need

0:07:500:07:54

to make a floor pad.

0:07:540:07:55

She starts by drawing a big square on the PVC.

0:07:570:08:01

This will be the top of the floor pad.

0:08:010:08:04

The square is then cut out.

0:08:040:08:06

Listen to the sound of the scissors.

0:08:060:08:09

SCRAPING

0:08:100:08:11

Next, Sarah cuts out the bottom of the floor pad

0:08:130:08:16

and then the sides.

0:08:160:08:18

Once all the pieces have been cut out, they need to be sewn together.

0:08:230:08:27

And that happens here.

0:08:290:08:31

Maria is going to use a sewing machine to

0:08:320:08:34

sew all the pieces together.

0:08:340:08:37

Maria is sewing the floor pad inside out.

0:08:400:08:44

She does this so that when it's turned the right way out,

0:08:440:08:47

all of the stitches are hidden and it looks lovely and neat.

0:08:470:08:51

The zip, here, is where the filling is going to go inside.

0:08:530:08:57

It's a bit like a bigger version of a cushion cover on a sofa.

0:08:570:09:02

To make the floor pad soft and squishy,

0:09:020:09:04

the skin is filled with a material called foam.

0:09:040:09:09

There are a lot of different types of foam,

0:09:090:09:11

but this is the foam that they use for a floor pad.

0:09:110:09:15

Can you see that, when I squeeze it, it's soft and squishy?

0:09:150:09:19

Let's use my special microscope camera to get

0:09:190:09:22

a closer look at the foam.

0:09:220:09:24

Whoa, look at that!

0:09:270:09:29

That is incredible!

0:09:300:09:32

Can you see that there are lots and lots of tiny gaps?

0:09:330:09:37

Well, those gaps are actually bubbles of air

0:09:370:09:40

and it's the air that makes the foam soft and squishy,

0:09:400:09:44

so it's safe to play and jump around on.

0:09:440:09:46

Before the foam can be put in the cover,

0:09:500:09:52

Colin turns it the right way round.

0:09:520:09:55

Look, now all the seams are hidden inside and the edges

0:09:550:09:58

look really neat.

0:09:580:10:01

Now the foam can go inside the cover.

0:10:010:10:05

The foam has to reach every little corner,

0:10:050:10:07

but Colin makes it look easy.

0:10:070:10:09

Brilliant!

0:10:110:10:12

All zipped up, and here we have one finished floor pad.

0:10:120:10:16

But, a soft play centre needs more than just floor pads.

0:10:170:10:21

This is a parrot you can sit and rock on, like this.

0:10:210:10:24

It's really fun, isn't it?

0:10:240:10:26

Shall we see how the parrot's made?

0:10:260:10:28

Let's find out.

0:10:280:10:29

The rocking parrot is made with the same PVC material - the only

0:10:290:10:33

difference is that, this time, Sarah is going to use a template.

0:10:330:10:37

This is a template.

0:10:370:10:39

Can you see it's the same shape as the rocking parrot?

0:10:390:10:43

The template is placed onto the material and Sarah draws

0:10:440:10:48

around it with a pencil.

0:10:480:10:49

She then uses a tool called a scalpel

0:10:510:10:54

to carefully cut out the shape.

0:10:540:10:56

So, to make the parrot,

0:10:580:11:00

there are two side pieces like this one and the top part, where you sit.

0:11:000:11:04

But, the rocking parrot also needs some smaller pieces like...

0:11:040:11:09

the eyes and...

0:11:090:11:11

..a beak and...

0:11:120:11:14

..the wings.

0:11:150:11:16

But the wings look a little plain, don't they?

0:11:160:11:19

Tony is doing something called airbrushing,

0:11:250:11:28

to finish off the wings.

0:11:280:11:30

The airbrush sucks up paint through tube into the nozzle.

0:11:300:11:34

Then, air is blown through the nozzle to put paint

0:11:340:11:37

out the end in a fine mist.

0:11:370:11:39

Tony now glues the smaller pieces onto the parrot's body.

0:11:410:11:45

It's really starting to look like a parrot now.

0:11:470:11:51

And then all the pieces are sewn together.

0:11:510:11:53

Now, the parrot is ready for the next stage.

0:11:550:11:57

Thank you.

0:12:000:12:01

Colin's turning the parrot cover the right way out.

0:12:030:12:07

Do you remember what we need next?

0:12:070:12:09

That's right, it's the foam.

0:12:090:12:11

But, which bit of foam should we use for the rocking parrot? Hmm?

0:12:120:12:16

This one. It's nice and squishy.

0:12:180:12:20

All Colin has to do now is put the foam inside the cover.

0:12:240:12:27

It's a bit of a squeeze.

0:12:290:12:31

And there we go.

0:12:410:12:43

One finished parrot.

0:12:430:12:45

It looks great, doesn't it? Ready for someone to play on.

0:12:450:12:49

What was your favourite bit about seeing how soft play items are made?

0:12:510:12:55

Do you remember the name of the material used to stuff

0:12:550:12:59

the floor pad and parrot?

0:12:590:13:01

That's right, it's called foam.

0:13:010:13:03

Did you hear the sound of the scissors as they cut

0:13:040:13:07

the PVC material?

0:13:070:13:09

SCRAPING

0:13:090:13:10

And did you see all the air bubbles when we looked at the foam

0:13:120:13:15

with my special camera?

0:13:150:13:17

And so, the next time you come to a soft play area like this...

0:13:230:13:27

Whee!

0:13:270:13:28

..you'll know how it's made.

0:13:280:13:30

And now you know how cakes work,

0:13:310:13:33

so you can tell all your friends and family about the chemical reaction

0:13:330:13:38

that happens inside the cake to make it rise.

0:13:380:13:40

Woohoo!

0:13:410:13:43

See you next time!
